Queen Elizabeth may be one of the world’s wealthiest women, but she loves saving a pound or two.
Over the years, the monarch’s thrifty ways have become somewhat notorious, amid tales of her insistence on repairing things rather than replacing them, warming the palace with a tiny space heater and dining on cereal for breakfast.
It makes sense: Before she was the Queen, Princess Elizabeth grew up during the Great Depression with World War II as the backdrop of her teenage years. Like many of her generation, she was tremendously shaped by the tumultuous period. Even from within the palace walls,...

Recuperating from a heavy cold, Queen Elizabeth has not been seen in public since the annual diplomatic reception at Buckingham Palace on Dec. 8. She then hosted the royal family at a special pre-Christmas parties at the palace, and her helicopter was spotted leaving for Sandringham on Dec. 22, one day after canceling her annual train trip to her winter retreat.
But with her missing the New Year’s Day church service with the rest of the royal family, when can we expect to see her again? She usually stays at Sandringham until a few days after Accession Day on February 6 – the...

Prince Philip, who turns 95 on Friday, said the secret behind his long-lasting marriage to the Queen is the fact that he makes her laugh, according to royal biographer Gyles Brandreth. Brandreth, who was given "privileged access" to the Queen and Philip for his 2004 book, Portrait of a Marriage, shared some key moments of his conversations with the royals with the Radio Times, including praise for the prince for being the "power behind the throne." "If we regard the Queen's record-breaking reign as a success - and I think most of us do -...

The new documentary on Queen Elizabeth II, Our Queen at 90, aired in the UK on Sunday night and proved to be very enlightening indeed. Not only did it reveal Prince George's adorable nickname for his great-grandmother and the surprising gift Kate Middleton once gave the queen for Christmas, but also the fact that one of the royal family's favorite activities is teasing Kate for being . . . wait for it . . . too friendly. "She has been very generous and not, sort of, been forceful at all in any of her views," Kate said about her grandmother-in-law. "I feel she's been there as a gentle guidance really for me. Everyone teases me in the family that I spend far too long chatting so I think I have still got to learn a little bit more and pick up a few more tips." If that doesn't confirm your love for the down-to-earth princess, nothing will.

When it comes to buying gifts for your in-laws, picking out the perfect present can be tricky, and nobody knows that better than Kate Middleton. When the Duchess of Cambridge was faced with the task of finding something special for Queen Elizabeth II on her first Christmas after marrying Prince William in 2011, she chose something surprisingly simple. "I was worried what to give the queen as her Christmas present," Kate said in an interview for ITV's Our Queen at Ninety documentary. "I was thinking, 'Gosh, what should I give her?' I thought back to what would I give my own grandparents and I thought, 'I'll make her something,' which could have gone horribly wrong. But, I decided to make my granny's recipe of chutney." Kate, who is no stranger to receiving gifts herself, could not have made a better choice. "I was slightly worried about it, but I...

When Queen Elizabeth II boarded a train Monday to return to London following her extended stay at her Sandringham estate, she made a very bold style choice: she wore black. The 89-year-old monarch caught the train back to Kings Cross, London, while wearing a bejeweled dark gray coat with a black fur collar, black gloves and (of course) a black Launer handbag. She topped off the look with a beige and gray silk scarf tied around her head - one of her favorite casual looks. So, why is it a big deal that the Queen wore black? She normally avoids wearing dark colors,...

The BBC's remake of The Lady Vanishes distanced itself rather too well from Hitchcock's classic film
The Lady Vanishes (BBC1) | iPlayer
It's Kevin (BBC2) | iPlayer
Our Queen (ITV1) | ITV Player
Who can say why the BBC suddenly decided to remake The Lady Vanishes, though it must have seemed a fair bet that only film buffs – and perhaps not the ones in the habit of dropping by for Call the Midwife at this time on a Sunday night – would remember more than the opening credits of the original 1938 Hitchcock adaptation (scrolling jerkily over a railway hobbyist's layout of a station and hotel nestling in the snow-capped Balkans, which must have looked almost real at the time). In the event they avoided plot familiarity by cunningly going back to the forgotten 1936 novel (The Wheel Spins) by Ethel White, thus dispensing with Hitchcock's gunfight at the end, his comic characters and egregiously providential turns of fortune.
