Insane gore..
devilbabynoangel30 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I just finished watching this movie because it sounded interesting.. boy was I wrong.

The first hr of the movie is semi-interesting; when the "killer" comes into play that's when it gets gory and a bit dull.

He more or less claims to be a number 1 fan but is merely a psychotic killer hoping for lots of views on youtube.

Gore to be expected in this film include but not in any particular order: aborting a baby with scissors, castrating someone with a knife, being shot with a shotgun, eating glass and swallowing it, getting an eye extracted with a wine bottle opener and much more. If none of this grossed you out or bored you to death then feel free to watch.

I don't usually have a problem with gore but this was completely unjustified and very tedious. it was more messed up than A Serbian Film to say the least.

sickest movie ever
abortamir12 April 2021
Although I'm used to saw and hostel movie but the gore here blew my mind not particular in a good way, first time I felt disgusted too. I'm rating it a 7 not because I support that kind of violence but because I know in real world, some psycho are doing this to innocent people. It's just bring awareness.

Went in with high expectations, BUT it was more of just a sick flick. Definitely not a horror movie. Just sick. Things i have never seen on the screen, and maybe for a reason. It didnt scare me at all like a horror movie should. It just grossed me out. Still, i gave it a 4 cuz i didnt want to stop watching, i think ? Not sure, but i think it was so dumb that i was hoping it might get better. NOPE!

The director asked everyone to rate this piece of junk a 10 at a festival I was at
nowheretohidejackson12 August 2019
The director asked everyone to rate this piece of junk a 10 at a festival I was at, a bunch of years back. The nerve of this director, goes to no end. She was rude, and arrogant to everyone at the film festival too. Any review on here that is high are from friends or dummies who did what she asked and gave the movie great reviews. This is a terrible waste of anybodies time. Just an awful movie.

Tripe. Awful. Dreadful production values. Avoid.
abetarrush18 October 2015
Oh, where to start... I'm shocked there's so many positive reviews, which leads me to believe they're all fake. The director did ask people to score it a 10 at all of the festival screenings... There's nothing good about the film at all. The plot is not at all original. It's basically a cheap copy of Among Friends, which is a far superior film. The dialogue is dire, the 'acting' is woeful, and it looks like it was shot on a webcam, sound and all. Seriously terrible. Reviews are saying people left the screens over the gore, but in my case many left because they were bored. Cameron has a decent insight into the current film industry and where it's going, but she also thinks she is a savior for the genre, which couldn't be further from the truth.

From a sick and very twisted mind
ant36au24 November 2018
No matter how bad a movie is I always make it a habit to finish it,in this case I wish I had never started it,the warped and twisted acts perpetrated in this movie can only come from a warped and twisted mind and it makes me wonder about the the thinking of those reviewers who rave about how much fun it is.Make no mistake, this is NOT horror,it is a slasher, there is a big difference,it is a cruel and particularly nasty type of slasher that would have me locking up the writer in a padded cell for eternity if I had the power, what really surprised me though is that the director is a female and agreed to direct a movie that has the female actors carry out the acts they did.Give this one a very big miss if you have any humanity in you.

This movie was the exact opposite of what it intended to be
devinsdadk8 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I love horror movies, even the crappy ones. At the very least it's fun to see how filmmakers with limited budgets find creative ways to present a story. Even when a horror movie is absolutely horrible, you can at least get a laugh or two. Truth or dare fails on just about every level.

This movie is supposed to shock with its graphic violence and gore. The problem is after a while, it just gets boring. The ante is supposed to be upped with every turn. Starting from a guy sleeping with underage girls, to the crescendo of abortion via scissors. By the third or fourth gory act, I was half watching and half playing games on my phone.

It's a sad day in filmmaking when blood and guts makes me yawn. I torture porn is your cup of tea, I suppose this one might be worth the time it takes to watch it. After an hour or so I was saying to myself "yeah ok. Stab this, shoot that, cut this. Next!". It becomes super dull and you're totally desensitized with 20 minutes left. I'd say if you're an average fan of horror, just skip it

Brutal, Shocking and damn right offensive...
jonpauldickinson29 August 2014
Jessica Cameron's TRUTH OR DARE comes with it an incredible reputation after receiving critical praise at the various festivals that it has played at. It has won many awards including Best of Fest Award at Shockfest Film Festival where Cameron picked up the prize for Best Director and Best Actress. So before I watched the film I was asking myself if the hype justified?

Truth or Dare follows six colleague students who go under the name of the Truth or Daredevils on YouTube. After their video featuring a game of Russian roulette goes viral after one of their team is seemingly killed, it is announced on a talk show that it was a hoax. As the group talk about their next video a disgruntled fan in the audience tries to interact with the team but is quickly shunned away only to appear later at the groups shoot taking control and forcing the team to play their very last game of Truth or Dare.

Despite its micro budget what we have here is a thriller that works well and one that goes to some incredibly dark places. Brutal, shocking and damn right offensive, Jessica Cameron's Truth or Dare pushes the boundaries of acceptability. Its direct mean-spirited approach reminded me of James Cullen Bressick's Hate Crime which is also one of the most disturbing films i've ever seen. Featuring some truly twisted dares and it has enough gore to make Hostel look like a Saturday morning TV show.

As Director Cameron spares nothing and no one as she crafts a thriller that accelerates in ferocity leaving her audience speechless. As for performances Jessica herself steps in to play one of the leads and is joined by Ryan Kiser, Heather Dorff and Devanny Pinn. The entire cast do a great job to sell the reality of the film without going over the top or feeling forced.

Overall, I liked Truth or Dare and despite its budgetary restrictions, I think Cameron did a great job as director. So if the secrets shared during the FIlm4 Frightfest Q&A after the film turn out to be true then it won't be long before Truth or Dare 2 goes into production.

Idiotic
Lambysalamby21 May 2015
What shocks me the most about this film is the universally positive reviews for it on IMDb! The user rating is closer to the truth. This was diabolical. If this is a shocking movie to people they must be quite sheltered from what movies they have seen.

First of all, all these characters were painful to watch, perhaps that's kind of the point but god I didn't wanna see them live, not one of them was likable.

Secondly some of the decisions these characters made are mind boggling, like I actually couldn't believe!

Overall opinion: BAD!

Recommendation: Watch a French film called Inside. Now that will bloody well shock you!

Intense, non-stop horror--not for the faint of heart!
DarkAnnie26 May 2014
I was lucky enough to see an early screening of this movie. I went in with certain expectations, suggested by the movie title, and by other "up the ante" type horror films. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the production and acting at the start of the movie. Then things took an intense twist. Okay, I was expecting that. What I wasn't expecting was the utterly shocking nature of the second half of the film. Mind you, I don't shock easily. I've seen just about everything. Twice. But this was horrifying in every sense of he word. It's not torture porn, it's more emotionally charged than that. And it has a twisty, interesting plot to go along with it. I found this movie to be refreshing and original. Plus, I love the fact that the writer and director is a woman. Anybody who says that women can't compete on the horror field need to take a good look at this movie. (And "American Mary." And a lot of other great films by women.) Anyway, highly recommended, if you have nerves of steel and a strong stomach.

Internet fame goes horribly awry in "Truth or Dare"
vrodgers-2696014 February 2017
These are exciting times in the world of scary movies in that women are making their mark in the genre as writers, producers and directors of horror films. Among them is Jessica Cameron, who co-wrote, with Jonathan Scott Higgins, and directed "Truth or Dare" and took it on a successful worldwide tour of festivals in which the movie garnered 19 awards.

It is an understatement to call "Truth or Dare" a cautionary tale, presenting a terrifying story of the dark, vicious underbelly of fame delivered at the hands of social media. Those who covet thy busy cyber traffic may have to deal with not only the relatively sane fans, but the downright demented ones as well.

Six college students -- three couples actually -- have hit the jackpot with their "Truth or Dare" video streams that offer a violent twist. They especially draw attention when one of them, Tony (Brandon Van Vliet) may have been fatally shot by fellow Truth or Daredevil Jennifer (Cameron). The group subsequently appears on a talk show and brings out Tony to show he really was not killed.

In the audience at the talk show is a self-professed No. 1 fan of the "Truth or Dare" videos, Derik (Kiser, who also stars as Charles Manson in "House of Manson"). When he makes a scene in trying to be recruited into the group, he is banished from the building.

Later, the group reconvenes at a secluded home purchased by John (Jesse Wilson), who has set up a studio in which to video the next episodes of their show. Aside from John, Jennifer and Tony, the group includes John's girlfriend Courtney (Devanny Pinn, so unnerving as Susan Atkins in "House of Manson"), Tony's girlfriend Michelle (Heather Dorff) and Jennifer's boyfriend Ray (Shelby Stehlin).

Just as the Truth or Daredevils begin to work on their next show, who should crash in on them but their No. 1 fan, Derik. Armed and certainly dangerous, Derik gets the upper hand and demands that they continue their "Truth or Dare" game, but under his rules.

With one member of the group already "out of the game" (in other words, no longer breathing), the group has no choice but to concede to Derik's decrees.

Unfortunately, in Derik's opinion, the show lacks structure and realism and he believes this cheats the fans. So he is here to fix things.

In the first round of the game, the five remaining Truth or Daredevils opt for truth rather than dares. But this turns ugly.

As in other horror movies in which viewers have to dispense with disbelief and accept that killers like Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger never die despite all the weapons and artillery used on them, "Truth or Dare" at this point forces the viewer to believe that Derik has managed to dig up deep secrets the Truth or Daredevils have been keeping from each other (even their lovers).

Of course, some of these secrets are pretty bad and it leads to, well, discord among the group members. So naturally in the ensuing rounds they opt for dares rather than truths.

And that's when it gets really brutal.

You can develop a grudging admiration for Derik's madness. This guy is focused on his mission. As he says, "Truth or Dare" "belongs to the fans" and it is the obligation of the Truth or Daredevils to give them a bloody good show. And Derik's sick creativity helps achieve this goal. Each round gets more brutal. And even if these people survive the dares they are irreparably damaged.

Of the group, Jennifer and Michelle are the gutsiest. Indeed, when Jennifer completes a dare without batting an eye, it seems she might be momentarily getting into the gory spirit of the proceedings. Later Jennifer and Michelle are the only ones to actually attempt to physically derail Derik's efforts.

"Truth or Dare" comes with a warning. This is uncompromising violence and not for the casual horror fans who enjoy films that that make them jump or feel uneasy. This movie does flat out dare you to watch, and even the most hardcore fans of this genre will find themselves of accelerated heart rates, possibly sweating and shaking, at the conclusion of the film. But then dare yourself NOT to watch it again. You might lose that dare.

Just Don't!
tryniti9877 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Completely garbage! How many times are you going to ask about sex? It started out pretty good, then just went downhill after the first ten minutes. The acting was really bad for most of the film, a few scenes were believable. Quality for a film made only 5 years ago, was horrible. Usually when the director stars in their own film, it's going to be a bad movie, and this was the exact outcome. If you are squeemish I highly suggest you stay away from this movie.

Sick movie
jcroak-1817421 April 2020
This was a very sick movie. The movie started out good, but it really freaked with your mind later on. The Bad guy came up with some very sick things on the dares. It was disgusting. The actors did fine, but the best actor was the bad guy, he sold it. He really sold the psycho great. I hated him so much that I wanted to slit his throat. The last half of the movie was just too disgusting, I had to turn it off. take my warning, it is too sick for words.

Warning: Spoilers
This movie was gory but that's not the issue. I should've stopped watching the second the girl was treated like a monster for being trans. When the girl's intestines were ripped out, I had to stop watching. The only good thing about the movie is the pedophile died. I honestly suggest you watch something else other than this sick, twisted movie.

Makers of this garbage need to play T&D with one another so they stop trying to be in the movie biz
grayey118 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Made for one reason - gore effect. Nothing else.

Six people all have a hidden dark secret - one sleeps with his sister, one was born the opposite sex, one has terminal cancer, one is pedophile, etc, etc Oh, and the main character happens to have figured out all this while nobody else knows.

Come on, please. Anyone involved in the making of this movie should be ashamed of themselves. I'm sure their careers are going well in film-making.

By the way, these aren't spoilers cause the movie sucks worse than most anything I've seen. There are reasons movies like this are free on Tubi.

A nasty, fun, low-budget indie horror movie
dr_catsu26 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Review of 'Truth or Dare' (2014) Indie horror can be a difficult sell. There are those of us who cut our teeth in the genre when it was still essentially a homebrew industry, when huge amounts of money were made by movies produced by innovative kids with nothing more than a camera and inspiration. In recent years major studios have acknowledged the financial viability of horror movies and given us a raft of films that, whilst commercially successful, were watered-down imitations of the works we love. The colour palette changed to a sickly green-brown and violence became graphic for graphic's sake; shock value by gore and grue rather than by quality storytelling and atmosphere. Occasionally, an indie movie gets the mainstream recognition it deserves and gives its stars their break, a la the Soskas and 'American Mary'; more frequently one is marketed well and gains a mainstream audience who then find it to be derivative and boring tosh and the whole indie movement is pushed back into financial hibernation once again. It is into this market that Small Town Girl Productions releases Jessica Cameron's directorial debut 'Truth or Dare'. Whilst it's not in the same league as 'American Mary', and not much is in my opinion, it shows real promise from a fledgling talent.

Like most low-budget horror, 'Truth or Dare' works within the parameters of a simple premise; an internet stunt show called 'Truth or Dare' posts videos pertaining to show cast members playing the eponymous game resulting in orchestrated faux-violence. The show gains notoriety by blurring the lines between reality and fiction, and when the group meet up at an isolated house to film their latest segment they are joined by Derik, a crazed fan who believes that true success can only be achieved by playing the game for real.

The first thing to say about 'Truth or Dare' is that the plot is very thin in places; the opening act hits the beats you expect and characters respond according to type. As things progress, there are a number of revelations opening up some seriously interesting territory that are never really explored or additionally referenced. In fact it is easy to see the entire thing simply as an excuse for unpleasant people being made to do unpleasant things to each other by someone more unpleasant. The majority of the big reveals come via a single character who knows everyone's darkest, oldest secrets through means that are never explained beyond the 'I-am-your-biggest-fan' cliché. Still this is a low-budget indie horror and, as fans, we look past trite or wafer thin plotting to judge our chosen niche on its own merits. Despite my reservations about the convenient nature of the plot twists, I really enjoyed 'Truth or Dare'.

The most striking thing is just how gory it is. There are some really gruesome deaths, both practically and emotionally, as the film progresses and the cast are forced to more extreme lengths to survive. Hardened as I am to genre flicks, there were a couple of scenes that were genuinely hard to watch; in much the same way that 'The Human Centipede' came out of a drunken conversation Tom Six had with his friends about how to punish sex offenders, I wonder if a similar discussion didn't give rise to some of the violence conceived of by Jessica Cameron and writing partner Jonathan Higgins. I admit to finding the opening half or so a little predictable but beyond that it seems like they were trying to constantly outdo themselves, both in terms of the graphic nature of the violence and of the cruelty on show. Cameron makes use of some excellent make-up effects, creative sound design, and quick edits to you leave with the impression that you have seen more than you actually have; a combination that serves to effectively disguise budgetary constraints.

For an indie feature the actors are also excellent. Whilst the plot hints at some real emotional depth and conflict to these characters, it never really materialises and the cast do well with what they have. Cameron herself takes top billing as Jennifer and her performance is perfectly fine if unconvincing by comparison; the real stars of the show are Heather Dorff as Michelle and Devanny Pinn as Courtney who generate some real sympathy once the suffering starts. The male cast are also solid although their roles feel more truncated than their female counterparts, especially the excellent Brandon Van Vliet as Tony who is surprisingly likable given what his character is forced to admit. Special mention must also go to Ryan Kiser as superfan Derik; crazy is difficult to play and, whilst there were times when his performance was a little too manic for my taste, he does a great job of creating a wide-eyed, gleeful antagonist.

'Truth or Dare' is a really fun movie; it's gruesome, has some very unusual deaths, and great special effects. Yes, the opening scenes are predictable and yes, the plot is very thin, but the sheer extent of different ideas thrown at the screen should be applauded. I suspect that this is exactly the film that Jessica Cameron set out to make too – a nasty, fun, low-budget indie horror movie – and her direction shows a good eye and real promise. As of writing 'Truth or Dare' is yet to secure a UK distribution deal and, sadly, may prove difficult to see on these shores. This is a shame as there is a sizeable market for this kind of film and I feel that it would do well; it won't win awards for its script but in terms of the amount of on screen carnage, in terms of shock value, and in terms of showing us the first beats of an interesting new director, 'Truth or Dare' comes highly recommended.

Terrible on every level
andrewburns-0544224 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Me and my partner love watching bad horror movies for a laugh and this seemed like it would fit the bill. We were wrong.

After the first half hour the terrible editing and inexplicable jump cuts stopped being funny and started being genuinely annoying. The acting is more painful than the overdone gore and the edgy 'truths' are even worse. Someone committed statutory rape, a brother and sister have an incestuous relationship, someone else turns out to be trans. Nothing carries any weight and everything comes off as a very transparent attempt at being shocking.

Don't waste any time on this movie.

Truth: I love this movie. Dare: I dare you to watch it.
rlsanchez528 September 2013
I had a chance to see the world premiere earlier this month at The Arizona Underground Film Festival and boy am I glad I did. Of the twenty movies at the festival, I by far enjoyed this film the best. It really is a treat for horror fans.

The plot is quite simple and works for the type of film it is. The story follows a group looking for internet fame who favor "Truth or Dare" videos that involve violence for views. When filming their newest video chaos ensues as a crazed fan takes hold of the game. From there it is a prolonged torture film.

Amazingly, the film never feels dull or loses its steam. If anything, it only gains more momentum as the film moves along. There are several comedic moments throughout the film but the film quickly changes tone during the second half and things get a lot more serious. I definitely noticed a change of vibe amongst my fellow audience members. As the silence of "Am I a horrible person for watching this?" grew, I couldn't help but smile because I was among friends. Another thing I love about this film is it also does great with suspense. You can not at all tell what the outcome will be. For being low-budget film there are some really well done special effects that will excite horror enthusiast.

During the second half several people walked out because of the gore factor. Which in my book only means the film is doing the right job. One person also seemed to have fainted as a loud thud was heard and several people rushed to help the gentleman up.I don't like comparing movies, and I'm not here, but Human Centipede 2 had less of a reaction then this when I saw its opening in town. So I applaud.

This is a little gem that has a lot of potential in the horror world. And if you love it, its our duty as fans to make that happen. I end with saying that everyone should see this great film as soon as possible.

Within budget and constraints - well done
jdollak27 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
There are lots of negative reviews here, and I understand them, but I think they're being much harder than they should be. This isn't trying to be some sort of psychological horror or anything like that.

This is a low-budget movie. It's not fancy at all. It uses mostly one location, plus a few extra shots. (I'm pretty sure that the TV show set early on is the same location as most of the movie.) Effects work is all non-cgi. Buckets of gore are cheap.

The story itself is pretty simple. A fan of a youtube shock channel decides to hold his idols captive and force them to play a lethal game of Truth or Dare. Obviously, the dares are pretty gory.

The writing isn't noteworthy, but it does things well. First, with a series of truths, our captives reveal generally bad things about themselves (with two exceptions, very obvious ones). This makes it a bit more acceptable when bad things happen to them. The script ramps things up appropriately, tension building at a reasonable rate.

To its credit, the movie does have a message. Not a complex one, and not one with real depth or nuance to it, but it's more than just a pile of gore.

Ultimately, this is the way that low-budget horror should be done. It works within constraints and budget, focuses on delivering what it needs to, and avoids reaching beyond limits.

The most messed up movie I've ever seen
princess-fairy201020 February 2022
I don't know who the hell came up with the plot for this movie but they should never be allowed to make another. I'm not kidding when I say I threw up watching this. It shouldn't have been allowed to be made. The people who made this must have a sick mind and it's honestly concerning. I almost want this movie to end up on the banned list because the content in it is just unacceptable. I usually like bad "horror" movies (if you can even call it horror) but this is one movie I will never ever want to see again. Unfortunately it's not gonna leave my head for a while.

A Bloody Good Time
jacob-burman11 January 2014
In a day and age where horror films have been about the paranormal, demons, vampires, time traveling, and other creatures of the night, Truth or Dare bring a breath of fresh life into the game. Jessica Cameron and Jonathan Scott Higgins wrote one of the most disturbing, sickest, and down right disgusting films from their deranged minds...and I LOVED every minute of it. Every f'd up idea you could think of, you will probably end up seeing in this film. Bravo to Jessica and Jonathan for having the balls to deliver such a film.

As for the acting, the cast was amazing. This was my first time seeing Ryan Kiser on film and he blew me away. He played his part down to a perfect T and I hope he continues to get more roles. Devanny Pinn is always a treat and continues to shine in this film. Brandon Van Vliet brings the comedy relief. And Jessica Cameron is a sweetheart that steals the scenes. My only thought is I wish they dove a bit deeper into the characters as I would love to know more about Heather Dorff's character.

All in all, if you love a horror film that has shock value, torture, and brings nonstop suspense for 90 minutes, this is the film for you. If you don't like blood, pain, and disturbing subject matter, this film is not for you. As for me, I'll be waiting for the sequel.

This is one sick movie
sheliawells82520 April 2021
I like my horror movies, but this was not a horror movie. That guy Derik was mentally ill. This is the most disgusting movie except for the movie Centipede. Stephen King knows how to make good movies (horror). This movie is dumb and I hated the ending. I will not watch anymore movies by Jessica Cameron. This movie gets 2 stars.
