As we wrap up our year-end coverage, IndieWire looks back at the people, projects, and ideas that defined 2023 — and what’s coming next.
As golden ages go, this one was more of a blip.
Five years ago, the box office celebrated nonfiction films: $22 million for “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?,” $14 million for “Rbg,” $17.5 million for “Free Solo.” Critical favorites and Oscar nominees included films from exciting American first-time directors, including RaMell Ross’s lyrical breakthrough about life in rural Alabama, “Hale County This Morning, This Evening” and Bing Liu’s moving personal exposé of domestic abuse in northern Illinois, “Minding the Gap.”
2023 lacked documentary touchstones. A few faith-based documentaries succeeded by preaching to the choir, but the most successful (non-concert) documentary released in theaters this year was the Yogi Berra baseball portrait “It Ain’t Over”. You also could include Magnolia Pictures’ “Joan Baez: I Am A Noise” or — if you...

Can you say, “Netflix effect”?
Nielsen reports the series of the summer Suits finally began to cool off around mid August, but it’s still clocking a significant audience since it launched on Netflix on June 17. During the week of Aug. 14-20, Suits dropped below 3B viewing minutes for the first time since the June 19 interval.
Make no mistake, the series still clocked 2.8B viewing minutes across Netflix and Peacock, blowing every other program out of the water. But one can only imagine this means that viewing for the series will continue to trend down as more people wrap up their time with the happenings at Pearson Hardman (or Darby or Specter).
In a similar vein, HBO’s strategy to license some of its content to Netflix appears to be working. The sports dramedy Ballers dropped on Tuesday of this measurement period and, in its first week across both services,...

Netflix’s Painkiller ticked up a spot this week to top Nielsen’s latest U.S. ranking of streaming originals.
For the week of Aug. 14, Painkiller racked up 1.1 billion minutes viewed across its six episodes, knocking The Lincoln Lawyer down to second (with 768 million minutes viewed/20 episodes). Netflix’s Depp vs. Heard hit the chart at No. 3 with 704 million minutes/three episodes, followed by Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building (590 million minutes/23 available episodes) and Prime Video’s really, really resilient The Summer I Turned Pretty (403 million minutes/15 episodes).

even weeks in a row with more than 3 billion viewing minutes, “Suits” has finally dropped below that marker, but it was still the most-streamed title between Aug. 14 and Aug. 20 by a mile. Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings for Aug. 14-20 put the 2011-2019 USA drama at 2.8 billion minutes watched.
Since its Netflix debut on June 17, “Suits” has had a monstrous, record-breaking run on the chart. It became the most-watched acquired title (as opposed to streaming originals) in Nielsen history during the June 26-July 2 window, and broke its own record for each of the three following weeks. In the July 24-30 window, it beat “Wednesday” to achieve the second-highest six-week viewership total ever, coming second only to “Stranger Things” after its Season 4 debut — then between Aug. 7 and Aug. 18, it beat “Stranger Things” to become the first show ever to cross 3 billion minutes watched for seven consecutive weeks.

Netflix originals regularly take the top spots in the Wrap Report, as they did for the week of Aug. 14-20 once again. But the streamer’s sixth entry in the week’s chart of the most-viewed streaming programs that’s particularly notable: Season 1 of “Suits,” which originally aired on USA 12 years ago, is once again among the top 10 streaming programs.

Chris Hemsworth is taking over another spot on Netflix’s most popular films list.
After 66 days, Extraction 2 has cracked the list at No. 10, knocking Spenser Confidential off and falling in line right under its predecessor, Extraction. This makes it the first film franchise to chart two films on the most popular list simultaneously, and it’s the third Agbo film on the list overall.
So far, Extraction 2 has racked up 129.3M views, and it still has about 25 days of viewing left in its premiere measurement window. The first installment sits at 135.7M views for its entire 91-day window, which means there’s a strong possibility that the sequel could end up outranking the original when all is said and done.
Similarly to The Mother last week, Extraction 2 hasn’t been on the weekly Top 10 in a few weeks, but these lengthier premiere windows make it possible for...

Depp v. Heard, Netflix‘s latest docuseries about the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial falls victim to a common documentarian fallacy. It mistakes editorial balance for truth.
In an interview with Variety, Depp v. Heard director Emma Cooper describes her approach to the series thusly: “My intention, right from the start, was to make a cogent and interesting reflection of what happened without using interviews or experts.”
The director then goes on to report that she’s encouraged by the split reaction she’s received from both Depp and Heard supporters, saying: “You know, it’s a balanced level of hate. I pride myself that it tends to be very 50/50.”
Cooper can be forgiven for interpreting divisiveness as success. We live in divisive times, after all, and nowhere was that more apparent than in the case of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.

In episode 3 of the Netflix docu-series Depp V Heard, the trial concluded with the jury’s decision. Given the evidence gathered by Depp and the inconsistency in Amber’s statements, people easily predicted the trial’s result. However, the documentary series maintained a neutral stance and revealed significant legal loopholes that mirrored the trial’s conflicting aspects. Even as the trial ended, the public remained perplexed about the truth, struggling to decide whom to trust.
However, the audacity that Amber and Depp both displayed by openly portraying their conflicting and vulnerable accounts to the media deserved applause. Unlike many celebrities who avoid such bold steps and opt for out-of-court settlements to avoid airing their dirty laundry in front of fans, this renowned rivalry between Depp and Heard lets each of them uncover the other’s flaws and present them to the world.

In the first episode of Depp V Heard, they showcased the famous 2022 trial clips from Johnny Depp’s defamation case against his ex-wife. A lot of damaging information about Amber Heard’s life was brought to light through the evidence presented by Depp in court. This led to a significant decline in her public image and subjected her to mockery and harassment by both the general public and social media content creators, making her life extremely difficult.
The Netflix docu-series, Depp V Heard, not only made the trial accessible to viewers but also made the bold decision to bring attention to the distressing issue of an individual’s personal life becoming a target for harassment. Additionally, Depp V Heard highlighted the ongoing struggle between public perception and trust. In the case of Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard, you could argue that nobody won.
The high-profile and highly-public defamation case between the formerly wed Hollywood couple took place in the spring of 2022, but what set it apart from any analogous predecessor was a secret third party: the internet, watching the case broadcast on court TV for six weeks. Netflix’s “Depp v. Heard” places both parties’ testimony side-by-side for the first time, but it also rehashes social media’s relentless participation and analysis, which turned the case more unpleasant by the day.
“Depp v. Heard” is most easily classified as true crime or documentary, but it doesn’t actually offer new information. There are docuseries and investigations, productions that ultimately bring a lesser-known story to light or add additional interviews and context — and then there are recaps. While “Depp v. Filmmaker Emma Cooper had to turn her notifications off.
The director of Netflix’s “Depp v. Heard” knew that by diving back into the trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, her latest project would attract a lot of commentary online. After all, the six-week defamation case between one of the most famous celebrities on the planet and his rising star ex-wife was televised live with viewers around the world consuming explosive testimony, including from both actors who accused each other of domestic violence. In the end, the jury voted in Depp’s favor with Heard ordered to pay him $10 million in damages, and ultimately settling their long-running legal battle for $1 million.
Given the high-profile and polarizing nature of her doc’s subject matter, Cooper was not entirely surprised that Team Johnny and Team Amber commenters took issue with the mere existence of the docuseries.

Publications aggregating social media reactions from preview screenings of upcoming movies is a fairly recent phenomenon. It offers little by way of depth and at least one veteran screenwriter has figured out a way to get his clearly absurdist fake reactions included in many of these roundups. But I can still understand why it’s fun to get the temperature in the room before formal reviews and analyses drop.
You would never, however, attempt to run an aggregation of those same initial social media responses four or five weeks after the movie had actually been released. Readers would see the headline and go, “Hmmm… Surely we have more voices and data points than that now? Surely there’s a deeper and more nuanced conversation that we’re ready to have?”

HBO’s Ballers, the docuseries Depp v. Heard, the Adam Sandler-produced You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah and interactive rom-com Choose Love are among the new projects debuting on Netflix in August.
After adding all five seasons of Insecure last month, in the first time an HBO original series was available on Netflix in the U.S., Netflix is adding yet another HBO title on Aug. 15: the Dwayne Johnson-fronted Ballers.
The streamer is also set to add HBO series Band of Brothers, The Pacific and Six Feet Under at a future date, due to a co-exclusive deal with Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max.

August has arrived, and with it, the last full month of summer-worthy shows and flicks, at least for 2023. From all the summer sensations to food weather, carnival fun and, of course, the lack of school, the streamer’s film slate will update with some appropriate flicks like “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2,” “Eat Pray Love,” “Despicable Me” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” respectively.
If you’re one of those who senses the change in the air as soon as the salty summer heat gives way to crisp fall fog, “Heartstopper” Season 2, complete with its cartoon drawings of leaves, waits for you starting August 3. “The Lincoln Lawyer: Season 2 Part 2” concludes the two-part followup to the legal drama starring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. “Heart of Stone,” a big tentpole film starring Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan, promises action-lovers a good time.
For those who didn’t get enough of the Depp v.

There are a number of world events deconstructed and endlessly debated by people online on almost a daily basis. Media circuses in the vein of the notorious O.J. Simpson trial seem to happen more frequently, albeit usually less intense. However, with the many issues plaguing our world, it takes a special case to garner an outrageous explosion of online reactions. Last year’s defamation trial between A-list movie star Johnny Depp and his ex-wife, Amber Heard, became that case.
Netflix has just released the trailer for Depp v. Heard. The documentary is split up into three parts and doesn’t look to be a play-by-play of the trial itself, but more of the impact it had on the world as the public would hang on every moment from every outlet — from streaming to television to social media.
The synopsis from Netflix’s Tudum site reads,

"Where does it end??" Indeed, the right question to ask. Netflix has unveiled their trailer for a documentary series called simply Depp v. Heard about the infamous Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard defamation trial from 2022. Everyone was expecting Netflix to create a doc about this event, they always have to create some "content" around popular events, always chasing that popularity, and here it is already - as fast as ever. Directed by Emma Cooper (of The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes), Depp v Heard is a three-part series examining the infamous defamation case that captured the world’s attention and became the world's first trial by TikTok. Showing both testimonies side-by-side for the first time, this series explores this global media event, questioning the nature of truth and the role it plays in our modern society. I don't think being this obsessed with celebrities and their personal lives is healthy at all.

It was the court case that caught the attention of the entertainment world.

Netflix is revisiting Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's 2022 trial in a new docuseries. On July 26, the streamer released the first trailer for the documentary, titled "Depp v. Heard," which will look not just at the events of the trial, but also at the way the story played out online as cameras in the courtroom captured every moment. As Depp and Heard's case was heard in court, millions of onlookers tried to decode every moment online.
In the defamation trial, which took place in the spring of 2022, Depp sued Heard for libel because of a 2018 Washington Post op-ed she wrote, in which she called herself "a public figure representing domestic abuse." Depp, who was married to Heard from 2015 to 2016, asked for $50 million in the suit. Heard then countersued with a $100 million claim, alleging that Depp had damaged her career. Ultimately, the jury found Heard liable for three counts of defamation toward Depp,...

For one-half of a hot minute on Sunday evening, the Paramount+ website listed the next episode of Joe Pickett as a “series finale.”
And though that wording was corrected, to “Season Finale,” in two shakes of a lamb’s tail — after TVLine reached out to network reps laaaate Sunday to get the 411 — I hear tell that some sad fans are still fixin’ for Episode 10 to be the show’s very last.
