In this second of a three-part special extra series based in the 'Quality Control Laboratory' at 'Morris Lubricants', Guy Martin and Adrian Hill take a closer look at the 'High-Temperature High-Shear (HTHS) Viscometer' to understand why it is such an essential and integral piece of equipment in the testing of engine oils. This test measures oil film thickness by simulating it's performance where tight mechanical tolerances exist, such as between journal and bearing faces. Oil film thickness is important as its value indicates the lubricants' ability to contribute to fuel efficiency. Improved fuel efficiency helps to reduce overall engine emissions, including CO2.
