Under the hood an average action movie, adding crypto currency, terrorism and whizz kids in an attempt to attract audience relating to such contemporary elements
JvH4814 March 2024
Saw this at the Rotterdam film festival (IFFR) 2024. After the screening I scored 4 out of 5 for the audience award. In hindsight, should have been 3 because of the generous running time of nearly two and a half hours, unnecessary to get the story lines across and overly stressing our patience.

Other minus points are (a) over-reliance on crypto currency as a novel plot element, a frivolous attempt to attract new audience, plus (b) introducing whizz kids who seem to be able to do the impossible whatever device or system is put in front of them. As an ex-IT-er, I consider the latter next to impossible, especially in the finale where cables from network switches and routers are pulled in a particular order, to prevent a virus from spreading, for the layman (m/f) possibly spectacular but very unrealistic.

Peeling this off, we get a standard action movie under the hood: ample car chases, heavy weaponry, explosives, many innocent bystanders and even some less innocent victims. Bringing in crypto currency and terrorism do not save the story from being traditional. Yet, some new elements make this movie stand out:

1. Firstly, the cause the terrorist group is fighting for, is defendable and just. A pity that their means are despicable. Their back stories are sad but not sufficient to justify all the bloodshed. In hindsight, their benevolent motives are foreshadowed by the fact (later on we understand them better) that the armored car that is attacked in one of the first scenes, is left open for anyone passing by to pick from. A nice "Robin Hood" touch.

2. Secondly, the two whizz kids who are pulled in, add extra plot material and act as a third group besides the anti-terrorist agency and the terrorists. Does it make the plot convoluted enough to fill nearly 150 minutes running time?? The traditional distinction between good and bad guys is not as clear cut as usual, which is not a complaint but rather a positive element.

3. Thirdly, the effectiveness of the chain of command in the agency leaves much to desire. Even worse, it works counter productively in the long run. Relieving someone of duty due to a defendable mistake, may seem to demonstrate a firm grip on the operation, but it is a waste of human potential and can only create disgruntled employees who eventually may work against the agency's mission.

All in all, the action parts make it watchable for people "in" for this kind of movie, while others (like me) can only endure the explosions, the gun fire, the car chases, the bloodshed, and so on. Still, this movie has some other nice parts that make it better than the average shootout.

High Expectations, High Disappointment

Warning: Spoilers
"13 Bom di Jakarta" successfully crafts a tense and engaging cinematic experience, captivating audiences with outstanding action sequences that maintain momentum from start to finish. The film showcases a stellar cast, featuring top-tier actors whose performances significantly enhance the overall quality of the production.

However, my initial skepticism arose from the film's complex themes, encompassing cryptocurrency, terrorism, and hacking. While these themes initially raised concerns due to technical complexities widely discussed on the internet, the narrative skillfully pivots towards the action, easing some of these initial reservations.

Despite the film's strengths, characters like William and Oscar appear replaceable, lacking clear motivations for their actions. It feels as though the script propels them forward, rather than a genuine character-driven purpose. The villains, while displaying impressive actions and an intriguing backstory, fall short in establishing meaningful connections between their deeds, motives, and ultimate character goals.

A notable factor impacting my viewing experience was my dissatisfaction with the film's title, "13 Bom di Jakarta." It seemed more akin to a cryptocurrency advertisement than a meaningful representation of the film. This sentiment doesn't stem from the number of explosions (which is only three), but rather the perceived inconsequentiality of the bombs in the broader context of the story and the antagonist's actions. Additionally, the extensive promotional campaign, emphasizing practical effects, left me questioning whether the promotion served more as a gimmick than an accurate representation of the film's narrative (at least, that's how it felt to me).

Despite these shortcomings, there are enjoyable aspects to be found in the film, leading to an overall score of 6/10.

Read this even tho im a bit biased.

Warning: Spoilers
It is remarkable how Film industry in indonesia has evolved. Im not going to spoil much but read with ur own risk.

To be fair. I enjoyed this movie because of how great indonesian production has come. The CGI was very good. It is noticeable but it is better than what we got before.

In my opinion the fails in our film is mostly in Set Design and Sound. Many of my country movie felt really.. homemade. Im not mocking my own country, but thats just how i feel. Which i didnt felt while watching this movie. The set design was impressive. The environment felt ALIVE. Like i can go to there and do things. Great job for the crew and director.

For sound design... i dont know what to tell you but, for me this has been a big issue. The dialogue audio felt... numb?? Idk the words. Sorry. But i can show a comparison. If you have a time go watch something from western, and compare the dialogue audio with ours. Ours felt like its recorded. Which it is. But its supposed to be not. Its not that im hating our industry. It is good. Its nice. I can hear and understand it. But if it can get better. Why not?

In terms of fight scene. I love the choreography. Its perfect. But the camera is just too close to the character.

One thing i like about this movie so much that it doesnt shy away from taking a wide shots. I loved it.

I cant say much about the plot. But if anyone read this. Pls give it a try. Its a solid movie.

I did say im biased, its bcuz we need to support our industry to grow. If thers an issue. Say it, politely. And find the answers together. Thats is the only way anything can grow.

But if im not biased. Its a solid 7. A fun ride i promise.

Left a bad taste in my mouth

Warning: Spoilers
Various plot holes, cringey (as expected), more of a cryptocurrency advertisement than a well thought of film. Brownie points for the car chase scene (pretty impressive for indo film standard). Came in expecting 13 bombs (when rlly there were only 3, did they wanna save up on visual effect budget or what)

Plot hole : if the whole point is to send malware into the superhuman computer, what tf are bombs for.. ? Couldnt they have done that from the beginning since Gita had access to it this whole time?? Am i missing something??

So PAINFULLY.. unnecessarily...long 2.5 hour movie. So many unnecessary scenes that could've just been cut (e.g : long close ups with intense background music that did not add any dramatic effect whatsover, reminds me of why i disliked sinetrons) and did not provide any value to the plot

AND AS IF THAT WASNT ENOUGH, by the end of the movie (before the end credits), they had to do a recap of what just happened (closeup shots of the deceased, the crime scene and all as if we missed what was already a very long draggy fighting scene)...like pls put me out of my misery alr.

Side note : LOVE the antagonist tho, the only acting that truly deserved an applause.

Yes to Trailer, No to Movie
hz_4 May 2024
This is my dissapointment about this movie. First, this movie didn't have good introduction at all... And the motivation of the characters are not that strong.

For a 2 hours long, this movie couldn't make a great character development, and I think its because in here there are too many unimportant character, I'm even confused till the end who exactly the main protagonist was...

Sorry, but Angga Dwimas missed the opportunity to make this as good as his previous movie (Stealing Raden Saleh). In this movie Angga is seems to be bound with cryptocurrency message.

If you watch the trailer, you will see how exiting it was in that 2 minutes... But the whole movie? Its the opposite of watching the trailer. I skip many unnecessary dialogues and some moment in here...

Very long and mostly dull
FireStation466 May 2024
The premise of the bad guys is a stretch. The length of the movie is equally a stretch. After a while it looses its interest but if you get ½ in you stay in the hopes it gets better. Maybe streaming this on fast forward would have helped. The good guys in the movie are annoying and distract from this every getting to be worthwhile. If you like shoot the up's and body count you may like this movie. The premises of the bad guys is a major stretch. After suffering through 2 ½ hours you will need to get up and stretch. This is not one movie you will want to see for a second time. Next time, I will read the reviews as there can not be that many that like this. I am being kind with a 5/10 rating.

After 15 minutes of watching this movie, me and my husband decided to stop it and change with other movie. The plot, the acting, the dialogue, like everything in the movie is boring 🤦‍♀️. Make it more natural please. Please 🙏🙏.
