As summer approaches (for the Northern Hemisphere at least), Netflix is set to premiere a fresh season of one of its biggest hits.
Brigerton season 3 is set to arrive on May 16 and will debut a “new crop of debutantes” into the regency drama fray. Other original series of note this month include Indian drama Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar (May 1), the Jeff Daniels-starring A Man in Full (May 2), and intriguing Korean title The 8 Show (May 17). Of course, Netflix is also rolling out a suite of true crime docs and docuseries as well. Chief among those options is Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal on May 15.
It’s the movie side of things where Netflix is feeling particularly lively though. May 3 sees the arrival of Jerry Seinfeld Pop Tart comedy Unfrosted. That will be followed by rom-com Mother of the Bride (May 9) and the Jennifer Lopez-starring Atlas (May 24).

The two-minute trailer for Paramount+’s 11 Minutes documentary series opens with Country music fans enjoying the 2017 Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas before their joy was erased by a mass shooter. Using interviews with concertgoers, cellphone footage, and other videos, 11 Minutes recalls the horrific mass shooting and its aftermath.
The four-part docuseries was directed by Emmy and Peabody-winning director Jeff Zimbalist and features the very first in-depth interview with Jason Aldean. The Country music star was actually on stage when the shooting began.
“When I turned around, my bass player was just looking at me like a deer in the headlights. And my security guy was on stage at that point, telling me to get down, waving me off the stage,” recalled Aldean.
Aldean admits to feeling survivor’s guilt. “It’s hard not to feel a little guilty. I mean, those people were there to support us,...

“Bigger than the game” is a phrase that gets tossed around quite often during major sporting events. The World Cup is certainly no exception, as national soccer teams, regardless of who they’re playing, have come to symbolize more than just a group of athletes. Through their resiliency in competition and the pride they instill in fandoms, sports teams are almost never just a collection of jerseys.
“Nossa Chape,” the newest documentary from “The Two Escobars” filmmakers Jeff and Michael Zimbalist, recognizes this fact almost immediately. About Chapecoense, the team born from a western Brazilian city that grew to national and international prominence, the film wastes no time showing how both team and community are intertwined. It also doesn’t take long for “Nossa Chape” to detail the tragic aftermath of a plane crash that killed 71 players and club staff in a late November 2016. Rather than treat this cataclysmic event as a prolonged,...

‘Give Us This Day’ Filmmakers Talk The Overlooked High Crime In East St. Louis In New Docu – Tribeca
Lying just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Mo is East St. Louis, Illinois, which has for some years held the tragic distinction as the city with the highest homicide rate per capita in the United States. The shroud which has mostly kept East St. Louis off the mass media spotlight despite its unwanted title is lifted in directors Jeff and Michael Zimbalist’s new At&T Audience Network documentary, Give Us This Day, which had an early sneak in New York just days after completing a final edit as part of AwardsLine’s screening series.
Give Us This Day tracks a year in the lives of three police officers and three residents living in East St. Louis, the city with the highest homicide rate in the United States. This documentary explores the humanity in each of these six lives as they intersect, develop and transform.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What’s the best documentary series you’ve seen on TV? Opening this up to past series, current ones, and those that you may have seen screeners for that are coming up soon.
Liz Shannon Miller (@lizlet), IndieWire
While we debate whether or not it technically counts as a TV show (certainly that Oscar it won would suggest otherwise), “O.J.: Made in America” was without question a seminal work, and one which owed a lot to its episodic structure while proving to be an addictive binge. Documentaries aren’t exactly my favorite genre, but “Made in America” was as gripping as any scripted series — and we have definitive proof of this,...

It’s no surprise that Pablo Escobar’s decades-long rise from petty street crime to the “The King of Cocaine” has inspired more than a dozen iterations on screen. Beyond the varied TV documentaries, his persona has loomed large in cinema and the small screen ever since his inspiration for Paul Shenar’s Sosa character in 1983’s “Scarface”; Cliff Curtis’ brief but effective turn in “Blow”; last year’s “Escobar: Paradise Lost” starring Benicio del Toro; and the fantastic documentary “The Two Escobars.” The list of upcoming and recent failed attempts at telling Escobar’s story is nearly as long (Oliver Stone and Joe Carnahan each tried, unsuccessfully, to mount a film), and while the kingpin is clearly attractive to Hollywood and beyond, one constant remains — he’s yet to be the lead character in his own story. And it’s an unfortunate fact that continues with “Narcos,” the latest...

Jeff and Michael Zimbalist's "The Two Escobars" was one of the best films from the first round of Espn's "30 for 30" documentary series, not to mention a hit on the fest circuit, playing Tribeca, Cannes and the Los Angeles Film Festival. The doc explored how the lives and deaths of Columbian soccer player Andrés Escobar and drug lord Pablo Escobar were intertwined. The brothers are currently working on "Pele," a biopic of the Brazilian soccer legend that they co-wrote and directed, but they've also maintained their relationship with Espn, co-directing the first "30 for 30" short "Arnold's Blueprint," as well as "Youngstown Boys," which it was announced today will be the next feature-length film in the series to air. "Youngstown Boys," slated to premiere Saturday, December 14th at 9pm after the Heisman Trophy Presentation, is a look at the class and power dynamics in college sports as told through the stories of...

Exclusive:When Imagine Entertainment partners Brian Grazer and Ron Howard re-upped in their 26th year at Universal in early 2012, like all studio term producers they watched the deal get smaller. They also went from exclusive to first look and while that might have humbled less energetic founders who’d made 50 films for the same studio, Grazer and Howard took it as license to tap into new avenues of distribution and funding to be more productive than ever. Consider that while Howard tinkers with the finished Formula One drama Rush and casts the Warner Bros adaptation of the Nathaniel Philbrick novel In The Heart Of The Sea with Chris Hemsworth, Grazer is on the Croisette, beating the drum for a Pele biopic to be directed by The Two Escobars helmer Jeff Zimbalist and his brother Michael. Michael and Jeff Zimbalist are set to direct a biopic based on the life of soccer icon Pele for Imagine Entertainment and Seine Pictures.
The story follows his rise to glory from impoverished youth in Brazil to a soccer prodigy who led soccer-mad Brazil to its first-ever World Cup title in 1958. His teams ultimately won three World Cup titles.
The Zimbalist's helmed "Favela Rising" and the acclaimed Espn doco "The Two Escobars" about the collision of Colombia’s national team and notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar.
Brian Grazer, Ivan Orlic, Kim Roth and Dany Wolf are producing, with shooting slated to begin in August.
