Review: Since her breakout role in Mad Men as Peggy Olsen, Elisabeth Moss has turned in stellar performance after performance. Still, her latest project, The Veil, puts her into a role that we would commonly expect to see from male actors in action-heavy projects. The Veil is another example of why we are in the golden age of brilliant female characters on screen. These strong, smart, and cunning female characters own the screen and set them ablaze. It just so happens that many can be found on FX. A network that celebrates edgy and innovative storytelling, with great female roles at the series center.
Often, these roles subvert female stereotypes. You have Anna Sawai’s brilliant performance in Shōgun, one of the greatest roles in television history, who gives a thoughtful, sumptuous, and cunning performance. Then, last year, in A Murder at the End of the World, Emma Corrin brought to life one of the most complex characters on television in recent memory.

Netflix has a lot of content on its virtual shelves, but it’s missing something so huge that it’s almost shocking.
They have no original medical drama for their subscribers.
Pulse will change all that.
Netflix announced today that Carlton Cuse and Zoe Robyn will team up for the new show, which already has its first star attached.
The Lincoln Lawyer Season 3: Everything We Know
Justina Machado is the first person to join the cast as a series regular.
This isn’t Netflix’s first foray into the procedural space, although their procedurals tend to have season-long arcs.
The Lincoln Lawyer, The Diplomat, and The Night Agent all have touches of procedural dramas in them, even if they don’t focus on episodes of the week.
Whether Pulse falls more in line with what we know as procedural content or not remains to be seen.

Daisy Ridley has a lot going on these days, but she made a point to carve out some time to support The Marsh King’s Daughter, a film that was a promotional casualty of the now-resolved SAG-AFTRA strike. The English actor has plenty of reasons to be proud of her work in Neil Burger’s thriller, as she’s tasked with playing the psychologically complex and physical role of Helena. As a child, the character lived off the grid with her mother (Caren Pistorius) and father (Ben Mendelsohn) until she was abruptly and dramatically whisked away to lead a more civilized life.
Ridley shares the role with Brooklynn Prince, who plays young Helena in flashbacks. The two actors happened to have a viral moment in 2017, as Prince met Ridley backstage at Good Morning America. Ridley then surprised Prince once more during a The Florida Project Q&a with THR’s Scott Feinberg.

Tom Hardy's first major film gag was playing one of the many faceless soldiers in Ridley Scott's overwrought war thriller "Black Hawk Down" in 2001. The actor was only about 24 at the time and had just come off of the acclaimed HBO WWII miniseries "Band of Brothers." His second feature was also a war drama called "Deserter," a low-profile project that was released in 2002. Casting directors seemed to like the way Hardy looked in uniform.
Also in 2002, however, Hardy was offered a higher-profile role -- and a very challenging one -- when he was cast as Shinzon in Stuard Baird's "Star Trek: Nemesis." Shinzon was a clone of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) who had been raised in a Reman mining colony, and who would rise up against his Roluman oppressors and attempt to take control of the Romulan Star Empire. Shinzon was essentially a younger, more aggressive version of Picard,...

The two stars do their best with a psychologically limited two-hander that takes place in a taxi from JFK airport to Manhattan
One would be forgiven for thinking that the one-location two-hander Daddio was born from the many restrictions introduced by the advent of Covid, a safe and easy way to make something, anything in the pandemic’s darkest days. It might have made it all a little easier to like, or at least admire, if that were the case but the film, set in a cab ride from JFK airport to Manhattan, has been in the offing for far longer. Originally conceived as a stage play, it transformed into a Black List script in 2017 attracting the attention of Daisy Ridley before morphing once again into a low-key, low-interest fall festival premiere, shot at the end of last year, ushered to the screen by its star and producer, Dakota Johnson.

"Tell me what you want!" "Don't ever stop driving." An official trailer is out for an indie crime thriller from Australia titled Mercy Road, the latest film made by director John Curran. Not to be confused with Jim Cummings' Thunder Road. This recently premiered at the Melbourne Film Festival and already opened in Australia this month, with a US release coming up soon. In Curran's thriller Mercy Road – an unrelentingly tense psychological thriller – Luke Bracey plays a flawed everyday man who commits an impulsive and vicious crime. In this ultimate journey to redemption, he soon learns just how far he is willing to go to save his child. The cast includes Huw Higginson, Susie Porter, Alex Malone, Martha Kate Morgan, and Toby Jones. Early reviews are positive, saying "Bracey plays a dad on a mission to save his daughter in this strangely surreal film set mostly in a truck.

No wonder the writers are on strike.
Being forced to try to bring freshness to the same tired ideas over and over to get some studio work must be frustrating. I would be picketing Lionsgate (which is behind this movie) just because it’s really not easy making this kind of thing original. The latest ripoff — and it literally is because it comes from the 2015 Spanish film El Desconocido, which itself has been remade more than once in the past few years — is the Liam Neeson-starring Retribution. A better title might be Generic Neeson #9. I even looked up the title on IMDb just to make sure this was a new Neeson movie.
This is not to say that Regurgitation, er, I mean Retribution isn’t effectively made. Its director, the talented Nimród Antal (Control), does what he can to make Christopher Salmanpour’s (basically a TV procedural writer) by-the-numbers...

Pop quiz, hot shot! There's a bomb in Liam Neeson's car! What do you do?!
What if someone remade "Speed" and removed all the stuff that made that movie so exciting? The result might be "Retribution," Nimród Antal's monotonous thriller that finds Liam Neeson doing his usual Liam Neeson thing yet again. Neeson, who went from professorial roles to an unlikely action star, can play this sort of part in his sleep at this point, and he certainly seems sleepy here, growling unconvincing dialogue as he speeds around in a car wired to explode. Yes, just like "Speed," a mad bomber has planted a device in a vehicle, and if a certain set of rules aren't followed, that bomb will explode.
Neeson is Matt Turner, a financier living in Germany with his frustrated wife (Embeth Davidtz), his angry teen son (Jack Champion), and his loud daughter (Lilly Aspell). We...

In “Retribution,” which could be the title of almost any Liam Neeson film of the past 15 years, the 71-year-old star is still a lean, looming oak tree of a man, but for maybe the first time he’s up against a force that outpowers his sullen machismo. It’s called trying to be a daddy in the 21st century.
Neeson’s Matt Turner is a high-powered banker/financier who lives with his wife and two kids in a palatial modernist glass house in Berlin. Neeson has often played devoted fathers — that was the whole premise of “Taken,” which kicked off the Neeson-as-seething-roughneck-of-vengeance genre back in 2008.
But in “Retribution,” Matt gets no respect from his tween daughter, Emily (Lilly Aspell), or his arrogant teenage son, Zach (Jack Champion). The reason, as the movie presents it, is that the culture around him has leeched his authority away. He can’t “lay down...

It is a rare thing when just the studio attached to a movie can get butts in seats, but that is just what Independent Film Company A24 has done since they were formed in 2012. From humble beginnings with the Roman Coppola directed A Glimpse Inside The Mind of Charles Swan III to break out hits like Ex Machine and The Witch. More recently the studio became the first one to ever sweep the top six awards at this past years Oscars when their films Everything Everywhere All At Once and The Whale took home Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director and Best Picture. As their latest film Talk To Me continues to put up impressive numbers at the box office, we wanted to know: What A24 releases has been your favorite? We compiled a pretty comprehensive list, but if you don’t see your favorite listed,...

Inside, directed by Vasilis Katsoupis, features an intriguing performance by Willem Dafoe. Dafoe, one of my favorite actors, is always brilliant even if the film falters, and that’s exactly the case here. Inside has no real plot, and even though I will watch Dafoe doing even the most mundane things, the film pushes the limit. Films like Locke, Buried, and Trapped are some notable examples that have only one actor predominantly driving the show in one location, but Inside feels just a bit too dry to be called engaging. The intent of the film is to get you into the mind of the character played by Willem Dafoe, and it hopes that some deep meaning will emerge through the metaphor of art that humans leave behind after they themselves leave the world. Whether or not it does is purely subjective, but the film left me wanting.
The story is quite simple.

Netflix’s original thriller series, Kohrra, has released its official trailer, setting high expectations for the series to be an enthralling narrative set against the serene backdrop of Punjab’s countryside. The talented team behind the critically acclaimed series Pataal Lok, including Sudip Sharma, Gunjit Chopra, and Diggi Sisodia, have reunited to present their storytelling magic once more, ensuring that audiences can expect nothing short of a bone-chilling and captivating experience.
One of the key elements of the series that adds to the excitement is the stellar cast of talented performers. Barun Sobti, Suvinder Vicky, Manish Chaudhari, and many other exceptional actors have been carefully chosen and we’re sure they’re going to have an incredible chemistry. As evidenced in the trailer, we can already say the characters played by Barun Sobti and Suvinder Vicky are going to bring depth and complexity to their characters, engaging the audience in the unfolding mystery.

The honest answer for why Hello Sunshine had such a prolific TV season is the pandemic.
“The timing has a lot to do with Covid because there was this moment where everything was quiet, but we were still working, so we were driving all these different things forward,” said Lauren Levy Neustadter, President of Film & TV of the media company co-founded by actress and mogul Reese Witherspoon. “When it was safe to go back and shoot, we had all of these shows that started production, and they all came together in a very similar window.”

Numbers have begun pouring in for this first weekend of June and it appears we have another Super Mario Bros. Movie situation brewing. If you recall all the way back in April, Super Mario Bros was tracking to do roughly $87 million for the weekend, yet by Sunday that number had ballooned to a record breaking $146.3 million (while also securing the worldwide record for an animated opening.) I don’t think we are going to see an explosion like that with Spider-Man but original tracking had Across The Spider-Verse at around $80 million, in our predictions from Thursday we saw the writing on the wall and put our guesstimate at around the $110 million mark. The film managed an impressive $17.35 million in Thursday previews, making it the second best preview numbers ever for an animated title just behind The Incredible’s 2’s take of $18.5 million. That film would ultimately open at $182.6 million, but...

The decision to re-title “The Interpreter” to “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant” is an odd one, at least on the surface. For 25 years, the filmmaker’s forte has been whiz-bang action-crime movies like “Snatch,” “RocknRolla,” and the recently released “Operation Fortune,” in which his (usually English) characters rattle off banter like actors in an improv warm-up game.
“The Covenant,” on the other hand, is arguably the director’s first foray into purely dramatic territory, the kind that has thus far occupied the margins of his work. It’s an Afghanistan war film about duty and guilt, focused on a U.S. soldier’s debt to his Afghan interpreter. The premise is hardly “Ritchie-esque” upon first glance, with a straightforward intensity that conceals no surprise tonal oscillations. However, it remains firmly within Ritchie’s stylistic wheelhouse — his command of the swiftly moving camera, and its focus on violent masculine subjects,...

A remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo may be on the way at Paramount Pictures, with Robert Downey Jr. at its center and Steven Knight writing its script.
Vertigo was originally produced by Paramount back in 1958, and according to Deadline, Hitchcock’s estate favored the studio for handling the new production. The original film starred James Stewart as John “Scottie” Ferguson, a former police detective who has developed a fear of heights and vertigo. After leaving the force, Ferguson is hired by an acquaintance to follow his wife and investigate her strange behavior. It was the first movie to use the dolly zoom, an effect that distorts perspective, mimicking Ferguson’s disorientation.
In the upcoming iteration, Downey will take on Stewart’s starring role, as well as produce alongside his wife, Susan Downey, and John Davis and John Fox. It’s not the only period remake Downey’s been involved...

Lucasfilm has had difficulty getting a new Star Wars movie off the ground, but perhaps Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight will have better luck. War thriller “Unspoken,” based on multiple true stories from invaded Ukraine, will be presented at Series Mania’s Forum Co-Pro Pitching Sessions in March.
Produced by Match & Spark (Poland), Toy Cinema and 2Brave Productions (Ukraine), the six-episode series – taking place during the very first days of full-scale war – is created by Filip Syczyński, who is co-writing with Zhanna Ozirna.
“This war has affected everyone in the world in a profound way. For me, it immediately posed the question: ‘What would I do to save my family? How far would I go?’,” wonders Syczyński.
His protagonist Evgeniy, on his way from Poland to the heart of darkness in Ukraine, has only one thing on his mind: Saving his wife and kids from the danger of Russian invasion. His time and tools are limited, however, and the only connection he has with his family is through his phone.

Every new Taylor Sheridan drama promises to be more star-studded than the last. The screenwriter and creator-showrunner of the "Yellowstone" universe (and a handful of other Paramount+ shows) has previously enticed stars like Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, Sylvester Stallone, Jeremy Renner, and country stars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill to the small screen with juicy roles. Now, we can add Morgan Freeman to the list of acclaimed actors heading to streaming thanks to a Sheridan show. "Peaky Blinders" creator Steven Knight has lined up his next TV series with "Rogue Heroes," a World War II drama with attitude about the founding of the Special Air Service (Sas). The series is coming your way this fall on Epix and BBC One, and now the first trailer for it is here.
Knight is also known for his other collaborations with Tom Hardy — the one-man movie, "Locke," and the one-season show, "Taboo." He's been moving toward the war, anyway, in the upcoming "Peaky Blinders" movie, but while you wait for that, you can get to know a new cast of characters in what looks like a British outpost in the Egyptian desert, as judged by the pyramids in the background. For "Rogue Heroes" (which will go by the title "Sas: Rogue Heroes" in the UK), Knight has enlisted director Tom Shankland and a cast that includes Connor Swindells ("Sex...

If you found yourself wide awake in the wee small hours with personal demons rattling in your brain, and you picked up the phone to share them with a patient, neutral stranger, Tessa Thompson’s measured, calming voice is more or less exactly what you’d hope to hear on the other end of the line. As Beth, a night-shift volunteer for a crisis helpline, the actor’s naturally gentle, benevolent presence is the chief asset of Steve Buscemi’s minor-key chamber drama “The Listener” — not that she has a host of elements to compete with in what amounts, on screen at least, to a one-woman show.
Thompson’s unforced credibility isn’t shared, however, by a flat, superficial script that treats an assortment of mental health ailments as quirky conversation fuel. Each anguished call that Beth takes, over the course of one long, dark night of assorted souls, is...

It was just shy of 20 years ago when a big-voiced girl from Tennessee auditioned for a fledgling singing competition that had quickly taken on a life of its own. Before she knew it, Kimberley Locke was a frontrunner for American Idol’s second season, standing on a stage in Hollywood and belting her heart out before upwards of 30 million people each week.
The months-long competition and subsequent attention were at once a thrill and a blur, and Locke — who finished third — was one of the earliest Idol contestants to parlay...

Home to films like “Lady Bird,” “Eighth Grade” and “Mid90s,” A24 is synonymous with a certain brand of indie, auteur-driven coming-of-age story. The company’s latest is “Funny Pages,” the debut feature film from writer-director Owen Kline (who you might recognize as Frank from “The Squid and the Whale”). Set in the suburbs of New Jersey, “Funny Pages” follows Robert (Daniel Zolghadri), a talented high schooler determined to make his way as a cartoonist. When his beloved teacher suddenly passes away, he rebels against his upper-middle class upbringing and abandons future plans to attend art school.
Robert’s decision to drop out of school, rent sketchy (i.e. illegal) lodgings in a boiler room and take a low-paying assistant job bring him into the path of Wallace (Matthew Maher), a former employee at one of the comic magazines Robert idolizes. With the singular goal of getting Wallace to mentor him,...

For all his success on both sides of the Atlantic, Tom Hardy is one of Britain's most enigmatic actors. He has the star power to headline major Hollywood motion pictures, but largely refuses to become pigeon-holed, just as likely to lend his charisma to a children's bedtime story as he is a guy inhabited by a vicious alien symbiote. His best roles tend to be brooding outsiders, and he has notably hidden that handsome face behind a mask in some of his most high-profile films. He also likes tinkering with accents, with very mixed results. From wonky Welsh in "Locke" to a wandering Baltimore brogue in "The Revenant," Hardy seems to go for the vibe of a dialect rather than note-perfect elocution.
The masked man and the accent thing combined most famously in "The Dark Knight Rises," where Hardy bulked out the shoulders of hulking supervillain Bane. Not only did...

One of my favorite (and certainly the most unnerving) movies that screened at this year's Overlook Film Festival, Scott Derrickson's The Black Phone (co-written by C. Robert Cargill and based on the short story of the same name by Joe Hill) is heading home to Digital on August 12th, followed by a Blu-ray and DVD release on August 16th via Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

Circle of Confusion, the talent management and production company behind “The Walking Dead,” has joined production and finance outfit Carte Blanche and Roadmap Writers’ genre screenwriting competition.
Josh Dove at Circle is handling their side of the partnership alongside Kyle Stroud and Frank Ponce at Carte Blanche and Joey Tuccio and Dorian Connelley at Roadmap Writers.
Carte Blanche will be greenlighting and fully financing at least one genre film. The script will have no more than five characters and five locations, and will focus on a contained, character-driven story. “Timecrimes,” “Buried,” “Monsters,” “Locke,” “Another Earth” and “Oxygen” serve as artistic inspiration.
The competition’s jury consists of producer Liz Cardenas (“7 Days”), Carolina Groppa, who is the executive in charge of production at Issa Rae’s ColorCreative, Giselle Johnson of Sony Pictures’ Screen Gems and Pixar alumnus Colin Levy, who is currently developing sci-fi series “Skywatch” for Peacock. And just like that, winter has come again. HBO Max’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by the return of the king. Or more accurately: the return of the queen … of the Seven Kingdoms.
Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Aug. 21, just over three years after Game of Thrones concluded in controversial fashion with “The Iron Throne.” This new series is a prequel, depicting the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons from George R.R. Martin’s lore. When dragon fights dragon, the realm will be torn asunder. But the viewer will certainly delight in all the Targaryen action.

An impressive slate of A24 films are coming to HBO Max next month, including Oscar-winners like 2015’s “Room” and Alex Garland’s directorial debut “Ex Machina.”
A total of 28 A24 films will arrive on the streamer on Aug. 1, timed to the studio’s tenth anniversary and marking the largest collection of A24 films made available to stream on the platform. Much of the lineup consists of films released prior to 2016, when A24 was still a distribution house and not yet the full-fledged studio it is today.
Some buzzy titles such as “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “Eighth Grade,” “Mid90s” and dozens more are not on this list because of prior deals the studio set up with other streamers. Most A24 films can be found on Apple TV+ and Showtime, who set up deals to serve as the home for a number of their digital releases in 2018 and 2019, respectively. But as those deals near a close,...

HBO Max is already the home of A24 series, including “Euphoria,” but now the streamer is adding several of the distributor’s feature films as well, a rep from Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed to TheWrap on Tuesday.
The list of films that will be added on August 1 includes 2015’s “Room,” which netted Brie Larson a Best Actress Oscar, Alex Garland’s 2014 sci-fi stunner “Ex Machina,” “Amy,” Asif Kapadia’s Oscar-winning documentary about the late Amy Winehouse, and the Tom Hardy film “Locke.”

Olivia Colman no doubt is a period piece “Favourite.”
The Oscar winner, who took home an Academy Award for portraying an emotionally stunted queen in “The Favourite,” transforms into the iconic spinster Miss Havisham for the upcoming FX and BBC adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations.”
The limited series is currently filming in the UK and stars Colman as Havisham, an elderly woman once jilted at the altar who is revengefully wearing her wedding dress and veil until she dies. Havisham lives with her adoptive daughter Estella (Shalom Brune-Franklin). Fionn Whitehead plays the lead character, orphan Pip.
The six-episode series is written and executive produced by Steven Knight and additionally stars Ashley Thomas, Johnny Harris, Hayley Squires, Owen McDonnell, Trystan Gravelle, Rudi Dharmalingam, and Matt Berry.
The coming-of-age story “Great Expectations” was first published by author Dickens in a series of weekly chapters beginning in December 1860, before culminating in the classic novel.

TV academy voters are faced with a daunting task when they fill out their 2022 Emmy Awards nominations ballot in that they have to consider 171 shows for Best Drama Series. This is up by 38 from last year. As has been the case since 2017, members do not have to winnow their choices down to a set amount and are instead being told to “vote for as many achievements in this category that you have seen and feel are worthy of a nomination.”
Last year’s champ, “The Crown,” will not return to seek another victory, as no new episodes of the Netflix series have aired since its fourth season finale in November 2020. Of its seven 2021 rivals, three – “The Boys,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and “The Mandalorian” – also did not return in time to meet the eligibility window of June 1, 2021 to May 31, 2022. Another two – “Lovecraft Country” and “Pose” – ended their runs in October 2020 and June 2021, respectively.

Taboo is a curio. The eight-episode first season aired on BBC One and FX in early 2017, and was immediately followed by talk of further seasons. Written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, the premise had been conceived by actor-producer Tom Hardy and his writer father. It was the story of 19th century antihero James Delaney, a man who scandalised Regency London by going up against the East India Company, the Crown, and societal norms until finally escaping England with a ragtag crew of ‘pilgrims’. Things were left on an ellipsis, not a full stop. And then… nothing.
Steven Knight, who’d worked with Hardy on Locke and Peaky Blinders, confirmed in 2019 that the season two scripts were almost written, but production was then stalled by a combination of the Venom movies and Covid-19. In November 2021, Hardy told Esquire that he was still weighing up the best options for a second season,...

Moe Dunford shines in Stephen Fingleton’s well-constructed Belfast-set drug-deal drama that, though not perfect, has craftsmanship and brio in abundance
First-time screenwriter Ben Conway has put together an interesting Belfast crime thriller, which pans out in a single, unbroken 97-minute take in real time, about a drug dealer doing one last catastrophic deal. Stephen Fingleton, who made an impression with his own 2015 debut The Survivalist, directs it with some elan.
Most of the film is a single, locked-off shot of a guy at the wheel of his car, talking tensely to people via a hands-free mobile while his life terrifyingly unravels. This owes quite a bit to Steven Knight’s lo-fi 2014 classic Locke, starring Tom Hardy doing very much the same thing. Moe Dunford (from Paddy Breathnach’s homelessness drama Rosie) plays Budge: a tough drug dealer looking for the traditional final big score to get him out of...

It was less than three years ago that Todd Phillips’ mid-budget but mega-successful “Joker” threateningly pointed toward a future in which superhero movies of all sizes would become so endemic to modern cinema that they no longer had to be superhero movies at all. With Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” — — that future has arrived with shuddering force, for better or worse. Mostly better.
This isn’t “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” posturing as a 1970s conspiracy thriller or “Logan” half-committing to its Western heart, nor is it a simple throwback to Christopher Nolan’s Bush-era take on the Dark Knight, which grounded Bruce Wayne in a tactile Gotham while still broadly adhering to the storylines and spectacles expected of its genre. No, the better part of this Batman belongs to another genre altogether, as Reeves stubbornly eschews the usual razzmatazz in favor of a hard-boiled murder-mystery in which The World’s...

This review of “The Desperate Hour” (formerly known as “Lakewood”) was first published on Sept. 12, 2021 after the film’s premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.
A mom’s morning jog becomes a gimmick running in place in “The Desperate Hour,” a crisis scenario striving for issue-driven importance that should have paid more attention to its dull suspense mechanics, slapdash style, and implausibility.
The estimable Naomi Watts is always in fighting shape for the deep feelings of a peril picture, as her all-in turns in “Funny Games,” “The Impossible” and “The Wolf Hour” attest — hell, throw in “King Kong” too — but as Amy Carr, a widow in the woods and desperate to get to a son in danger, it’s the actress who’s stuck and unable to escape the confines of a cheap trap that only gets more tedious as it goes along.
Her captors are filmmakers who should know...

In the first episode of 90s-set ITV drama Quiz, a group of men are devising a game show. Provisionally titled Cash Mountain, it involves players doubling their money with each correct answer on their way to the summit. Concerned that the concept’s too old-fashioned, a Birmingham accent comically suggests, “We could set it on an actual mountain. Like, a little one? Wales?”
Cash Mountain didn’t go down the Welsh Outward Bound route but stuck to its questions-and-cash simplicity to become global smash hit Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? That Brummie voice belonged to Steve Knight (played in Quiz by Keir Charles). He was one of the three creators credited with devising the quiz show that was later struck by the “Coughing Major” cheating scandal so brilliantly dramatised in James Graham’s play and TV adaptation.
In the nineties, Knight and his writing partner Mike Whitehill worked at TV production company Celador.

It’s 5 p.m. and the day tumbles white with clouds. A car sneaks out of a parking lot and into traffic. The man at the wheel is alone. He turns off the radio and makes two phone calls: one to his old mother—”Hello Mutti, it’s Buschi”—and one to his wife. We listen to him chat as the outskirts of Melbourne flash by in a long caravan of office buildings and highway bridges. We sit behind him, in the car; all we see of his face is a slanted reflection in the rearview mirror. His name is Andrew (Andrew Rakowski), a lawyer pushing 60. For the past 13 years this has been his commute; for the next three hours The Plains keeps us in the backseat of his Hyundai as he drives home from work. This, in a nutshell, is all there is to David Easteal’s feature debut.

While it might not be as well-known as some of its U.S. counterparts—and one suspects this will change when the whole series is bingeable on Netflix soon— the BBC’s “Peaky Blinders” is immensely popular across the pond and globally. A British period crime drama television series created by writer/director Steven Knight, the series follows the exploits of the Peaky Blinders crime gang in the direct aftermath of the First World War.

‘The Harder They Fall’ Tops Nielsen U.S. Streaming Chart As Netflix Has Strong Overall Movie Showing
Netflix had a good week at the virtual box office from November 1 to 7, taking the overall streaming crown with marquee feature film The Harder They Fall.
Nielsen said the film racked up almost 1.2 billion minutes of streaming views. That was well ahead of any other series or film, as two-time champ You faded to the No. 2 spot at 994 million minutes of viewing and other shows also lost steam.
Two other original films performed well for Netflix. Army of Thieves, a prequel to Zack Snyder’s zombie action outing Army of the Dead, collected 456 million viewing minutes. Love Hard, a dating comedy starring Nina Dobrev, scooped up 455 million. Along with Harder, they helped Netflix take the top three spots on Nielsen’s movie-centric chart.
Nielsen measures only viewing via a TV set, leaving aside mobile, delivering numbers from Disney+, Hulu, Apple TV+, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video after a month’s delay.
