Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt rekindle a passionate past romance in Netflix‘s new rom-com Mother of the Bride, out now. After their sudden and confusing breakup right after college, these former flames cross paths when their kids (with different partners) wind up getting married to each other. When Lana and Will meet up again in Thailand for Emma (Miranda Cosgrove) and Rj’s (Sean Teale) wedding, decades have passed. They’re now in their 50s, but they can’t shake that undeniable connection between them. Shields is thankful that movies like Mother of the Bride exist for women her age. “I’ve been fighting for this new movement,” the 58-year-old told TV Insider. “That was one of the sort of most important things when Christina Rogers at Netflix said, ‘You know, I want to tell these stories.’ And I said, ‘Good luck because you’re going to get resistance.

Romantic films lately have come up with permutations and combinations of love stories about men and women and how they meet. It is usually these plot points that make any one film in this genre different from the others. The rest of the story remains the same, and just like that, such films get traction only for the romance part. The rest is just forgettable. The brand-new Netflix original Mother of the Bride, which was released on May 9th, 2024, is yet another addition to this genre. Just last week, Netflix Middle East released Honeymoonish, a Kuwaiti film about a newlywed couple trying to get along with each other after their shotgun wedding.
Mother of the Bride, as the title suggests, is the story of Dr. Lana Winslow, one of the reputed researchers, who is worried about her only daughter Emily Winslow getting married to a man the mother has not even met.

If you’ve already treated yourself to a viewing of Netflix’s Mother of the Bride, you know darn well which scene we’ve come here to discuss.
If you haven’t, allow us to paint you a picture: Lana (Brooke Shields) has traveled all the way to Thailand for her daughter’s wedding, only to discover that her new son-in-law’s father (Benjamin Bratt) is the man who broke her heart many years ago. If that isn’t awkward enough, Lana accidentally walks in on her ex naked — save for a strategically placed straw.

Chad Michael Murray cemented himself as an early 2000s dreamboat with roles in A Cinderella Story, One Tree Hill, Freaky Friday and more. Now, as a father of three, the actor says his kids are one of his biggest considerations when choosing new roles.
The Mother of the Bride star sat down with Numéro Netherlands ahead of the release of the Netflix movie and discussed his decades-long career, future projects and how he always puts his family first.
“I would say, a lot of material, especially over the past five to eight years since my son was born, I choose because I think one of the last things you really want is for your kids to be berated in school for what their parents are doing,” Murray told the publication. “I don’t want my kids going to school, being freshmen in high school, and Dad’s butt posted all over their locker.

In a world inundated with romantic comedies that often march lockstep in formula and execution, Netflix’s latest offering, “Mother of the Bride,” does little to break the mold. Starring Brooke Shields as a revolutionary genetics scientist, the film navigates through the well-trodden territory of successful but inexplicably single women finding love in unexpected places.
The Plot
“Mother of the Bride” introduces us to Lana, played by Shields, whose world-changing scientific achievements apparently leave her little time for romance. The narrative takes a turn when Lana’s daughter announces her impending wedding in Thailand, leading Lana on a trip that reunites her with a college flame. What ensues is a dance of flirtation between two characters in their forties, set against the backdrop of a picturesque Thai wedding.
Film Overview
For those ambivalent or indifferent to the charms of romantic comedies, “Mother of the Bride” will likely not inspire a change of heart.

More background fluff from the streamer, this time from Mean Girls director Mark Waters with a splashy Thailand location
Despite experience mostly insisting caution, certain markers still allow one to naively daydream that a new Netflix comedy might be worth more than a background half-watch while ironing. A big name, an experienced writer, a genuine studio-trained director, some substantive source material, anything to allow us to glide on the brief hope that we’re not in hammy, Hallmark-adjacent territory.
This thinking sometimes works – 2019’s Let It Snow was based on a solid YA novel, 2021’s Moxie had Amy Poehler in front of and behind the camera, this year’s Players benefited from the considerable charm of star Gina Rodriguez – but it too often makes precious little difference. For Mother’s Day in the US, the streamer has Mother of the Bride, a breezy comedy that arrives from director Mark Waters,...

Mother of the Bride unwittingly tells you everything you need to know about it right at the opening logos: the expected Netflix logo and one for the Motion Picture Corporation of America, a company I’ve never heard of that apparently specializes in low-budget comedies, such as Dumb and Dumber, the A Christmas Prince and The Princess Switch franchises, and Irish Wish earlier this year.
Even without knowing their filmography, I would still say this logo tells you everything about the film before it starts because “Motion Picture Corporation of America” sounds like the most generic name for a movie studio ever and Mother of the Bride is unfortunately about as generic a romantic comedy as you can get, aside from a handful of key details that honestly make it worse.

‘Mother of the Bride’ Review: Brooke Shields Says I Do to Netflix’s Aggressively Inoffensive Rom-Com
After “Ticket to Paradise” and “Shotgun Wedding” showed us the different ways in which calamity ensues when planning weddings abroad, Netflix releases “Mother of the Bride,” which combines the essential elements of both those recent romantic comedies into one passable package. The far-off setting emphasizes the lavish and luxe, though the narrative is cheaply woven and fairly threadbare. While “Mean Girls” director Mark Waters’ latest fails to add anything unique to the conversation, it does scrounge up a modest amount of heart when it comes to its saccharine sweet message of never giving up on happily ever after.
Mere seconds after her extravagant proposal, Emma (Miranda Cosgrove) begins fretting to her fiancé Rj (Sean Teale) about how to frame their engagement to her judgmental widowed mom Dr. Lana Winslow (Brooke Shields), who doesn’t even know her only child has a steady beau. Cue zany, plucky score. Mom’s been busy saving the world,...

Weddings are always social minefields. But when your daughter is marrying your ex’s son? How do you assign that seating chart?
Brooke Shields is about to find out in Mother of the Bride, a new rom-com directed by Mark Waters from a script by Robin Bernheim, who penned the Princess Switch trilogy. Castle for Christmas star Shields will appear alongside an all-star ensemble of wedding attendants in the nuptial slapstick comedy, and we’ve got all the hot wedding gossip you could possibly ask for.
“It was a nice film because it was like an actual destination wedding where you really have nobody to hang out with but the other people in the wedding,” director Waters says of the production, which filmed in Thailand. “We were all living in the same hotels and going to the same restaurant, so everyone naturally became friends.”

So far in 2024, Netflix hasn't had much luck when it comes to romantic comedies. The Irish Wish, starring Lindsay Lohan, which was one of the most anticipated premieres of the genre, ended up being a disappointment for many viewers.
Now it can be expected that people will approach Netflix’s rom coms with a pinch of salt, but perhaps Mother of the Bride will be enough to convince audiences to lower their guard again. At the very least, the film is already doing a great job by covering the basis of several generations through its casting choices.
Is Mother of the Bride Worth Watching?
The romantic comedy starring The Blue Lagoon lead Brooke Shields and the Nickelodeon household name known to all 00's kids, Miranda Cosgrove, will tell the story of a magical wedding ruined by circumstances that make it almost impossible. The film falls into the same realm as Mamma Mia,...

Summer doesn’t officially begin until June 20, 2024, but for the entertainment industry, the summer season starts in early May. Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton entering into a unique arrangement, J.Lo fighting evil artificial intelligence, the roasting of an NFL legend, a retelling of the invention of the Pop Tart, Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt at war and John Mulaney’s six-night live comedy event from Los Angeles are some of the big titles hitting Netflix in May.
Debuting on May 3 is Jerry Seinfeld’s directorial debut, Unfrosted. The comedy legend works both sides of the camera for this humorous feature take on the birth of the Pop Tart. The movie is set in 1963 as breakfast cereal giants Kellogg’s and Post compete to become the first company to create a morning pastry. Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan and Amy Schumer also star, with Hugh Grant more than likely to steal the whole film with a turn as Tony the Tiger.

As summer approaches (for the Northern Hemisphere at least), Netflix is set to premiere a fresh season of one of its biggest hits.
Brigerton season 3 is set to arrive on May 16 and will debut a “new crop of debutantes” into the regency drama fray. Other original series of note this month include Indian drama Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar (May 1), the Jeff Daniels-starring A Man in Full (May 2), and intriguing Korean title The 8 Show (May 17). Of course, Netflix is also rolling out a suite of true crime docs and docuseries as well. Chief among those options is Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal on May 15.
It’s the movie side of things where Netflix is feeling particularly lively though. May 3 sees the arrival of Jerry Seinfeld Pop Tart comedy Unfrosted. That will be followed by rom-com Mother of the Bride (May 9) and the Jennifer Lopez-starring Atlas (May 24).

Miranda Cosgrove is recalling an interaction she had with a young iCarly fan that didn’t necessarily go as expected.
During an appearance on Wednesday’s episode of Live With Kelly and Mark, host Kelly Ripa noted how the 30-year-old actress and singer had “not changed very much” since her debut acting role in 2003’s School of Rock at age 9.
“I do sometimes [get recognized],” Cosgrove said in response. “It’s funny because there was a moment when a lot of young kids didn’t really know who I was because [iCarly] hadn’t been on for a while. Then, Netflix got the show and they started playing the old seasons.”
The Mother of the Bride actress went on to recall an encounter she had with a young fan during a recent Target shopping trip.
“There’s a little boy just kind of looking at me in the toy aisle. He kept looking up at me.

It’s season finale time for networks, but Netflix, naturally, still has plenty of brand new TV and shows coming in May.
Jeff Daniels makes his TV return in the David E. Kelley series “A Man in Full.” That six-episode series is based on the bestselling book of the same name by Tom Wolfe. It’s already been a busy 2024 for Netflix. Out is long time film chief Scott Stuber; in are live sports (sort of), a huge Sundance splash, and 18 Oscar nominations, the most of any individual studio. What does the next 11 months have in store? Answer: a hell of a lot.
Netflix on February 1 released a teaser video for its biggest properties arriving in 2024, including more than 50 new movies and 90 new and returning series. The highlight is “Squid Game 2,” the follow-up season to the South Korean dystopian smash hit that became Netflix’s biggest show of all time.
At the end of Netflix’s mega-tease, we see Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and his new bright-red hair walking through an airport when a mysterious voice on his phone tells him, “You’re going to regret the choice you made.”
“I’m going to find you, no matter what it takes,” he says in return.

Brooke Shields came pretty close to starring in Stephen Frears’ 1988 period drama “Dangerous Liaisons” alongside John Malkovich, Glenn Close, Michelle Pfeiffer and Keanu Reeves. “They told me it came down to me and someone else,” Shields tells me. “They said the other person was this girl not many people knew about. It was Uma Thurman. At that time and that age, it felt so personal, but I’ve learned over time not to take it personally because ‘no’ outweighs ‘yes’ extensively in this business.”
Released by Warner Bros., “Dangerous Liaisons” went on to be nominated for seven Oscars, eventually taking home the awards for adapted screenplay, costume design and production design. Christopher Hampton adapted the screenplay from his 1985 play “Les Liaisons dangereuses.” The $14 million film grossed $34.7 million at the box office.
Shields says she and Thurman have become close friends in the decades since the movie was made.
