Welcome to another look back at the biggest hits of 2023. Today, we’ll look through the documentaries and docu-series that picked up the most points in the Netflix top 10s throughout the year.
This list is compiled with data from FlixPatrol, which tracks the daily top 10s in over 90 countries globally. Their data provides a daily snapshot of what’s trending in the TV and movie list by providing points to each title that features. Although we love their data, it’s neither perfect nor an exact measurement of viewership. Netflix does provide its own data on this front, but it doesn’t allow us to paint a big picture of what was watched most in 2023 as it stands.
Because documentaries feature in the movie lists and docu-series feature in the TV list, we’ll split them separately. We’ll have a look at the documentaries and docu-series to do best globally first,...

As we wrap up our year-end coverage, IndieWire looks back at the people, projects, and ideas that defined 2023 — and what’s coming next.
As golden ages go, this one was more of a blip.
Five years ago, the box office celebrated nonfiction films: $22 million for “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?,” $14 million for “Rbg,” $17.5 million for “Free Solo.” Critical favorites and Oscar nominees included films from exciting American first-time directors, including RaMell Ross’s lyrical breakthrough about life in rural Alabama, “Hale County This Morning, This Evening” and Bing Liu’s moving personal exposé of domestic abuse in northern Illinois, “Minding the Gap.”
2023 lacked documentary touchstones. A few faith-based documentaries succeeded by preaching to the choir, but the most successful (non-concert) documentary released in theaters this year was the Yogi Berra baseball portrait “It Ain’t Over”. You also could include Magnolia Pictures’ “Joan Baez: I Am A Noise” or — if you...

Netflix further prized open the lid to its black box of data on Tuesday, with the streamer publishing a list of viewing figures for nearly 2,000 titles in its library.
The ratings dump covers the first half of 2023 and is measured as “hours viewed,” which departs from Netflix’s publication of “views,” the metric that it began using this year to rank its Top 10 lists.
Hours viewed puts shorter content at a significant disadvantage, while longer series (usually dramas) stand to benefit, but the figures do still offer a rare insight into Netflix subscriber behavior.
U.S. films and series unsurprisingly dominate Netflix’s list, with political conspiracy thriller The Night Agent topping the pile with 812M hours viewed. Little wonder Netflix renewed the series so swiftly.
The Brits were heavily represented, even if the first half of 2023 appeared a little light on new UK originals, with the likes of Sex Education,...

Self-control can be hard, and the early days of streaming left some viewers with habits that are now too ingrained to break. Samba TV’s “State of Viewership” report for the first half of 2023 is shedding light on the viewing habits of streaming customers in the United States, and the numbers contained good news for services like Netflix and Prime Video.
30-Day Free Trial $8.99 / month amazon.com
The report shows that 72% of U.S. streaming customers identify themselves as “binge-watchers.” These viewers tend to make quick work of a series they’ve chosen to binge as well; 47% of households that watched the top bingeable premieres released in the first half of 2023 finished the available episodes within five days of their release.
Netflix is the master of the binge-release model. Eight of its binge-released series in 1H of 2023 saw more than half of audiences who finished the show within 31 days of starting...

It’s slightly ironic that Tinder has chosen London’s creative neighborhood of Shoreditch as a key target for its first global ad campaign, splashing some major spend on scores of bold, brightly colored billboards asserting that it all “starts with a swipe.” Although the area’s demographic — hectic, switched-on 20- and 30-somethings forever glued to their phones and laptops — would seem the perfect audience, it’s unlikely that many realize that just around the corner from the hoardings sits the company responsible for making the dating app’s most notorious swiper globally famous.

The Nielsen streaming charts had a first for the week of March 6-12: Seven different platforms made an appearance in the various top 10 lists.
Paramount+’s Star Trek: Picard made its first ever appearance in the rankings, finishing ninth among original series with 310 million minutes of viewing as it reached the midpoint of its third season. Picard is the second Paramount+ original series to make the rankings, following 1923 two weeks earlier. (NCIS, which streams on both Paramount+ and Netflix, led the acquired series chart.)
Ted Lasso also put Apple TV+ back in the rankings with the premiere of its third season, racking up 539 million minutes of watch time. Netflix, Disney+ and HBO Max had multiple titles in the top 10s. Peacock had two entries in the top 10 movies (including a shared one with Netflix for Turbo), and Hulu’s movie Boston Strangler also made the film chart.

On April 15, 2013, two homemade pressure cooker bombs detonated near the finish line of the Boston Marathon route, killing three people and injuring hundreds of others. The brazen act of terrorism would lead to an intense four-day manhunt throughout eastern Massachusetts that would ultimately lead to the capture of one of the perpetrators and the death of the other.
The story of the Boston Marathon Bombing, as it would come to be known, is characterized by both the gritty resilience of the city that endured it and the unprecedented tactics that law enforcement would undertake to bring those involved to justice. With its new three-episode docuseries American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing, Netflix has now attempted to bring the definitive version of this historic event to its stream.

Chris Rock’s live stand-up special on Netflix didn’t break through in the streamer’s global rankings, but it definitely caught on with U.S. viewers.
In the nine days after its March 4 release, Chris Rock: Selective Outrage racked up almost 1.22 billion minutes of viewing, including 798 million for the week of March 6-12. The 1.22 billion minutes equate to about 20.3 million full runs of the hourlong special.
For just the March 6-12 frame, Nielsen’s tally of 798 million minutes for Selective Outrage works out to 13.3 million hours — about three fourths of the 17.79 million hours worldwide the special recorded in Netflix’s internal measurements. (Nielsen and Netflix use different methodologies to compute their watch-time stats, but it’s safe to say the bulk of the special’s viewing came from the United States.) “You” has reclaimed its position at the top of Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings. The Netflix series starring Penn Badgley was watched for 1.4 billion minutes throughout the March 6-12 window, during which second part of Season 4 was available for four days.
“Outer Banks,” last week’s top title, came in at No. 2 with 1.2 billion minutes watched during the first full week of availability of Season 3. At No. 3 was “MH370: The Plane That Disappeared,” Netflix’s three-episode limited documentary series about Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. It was watched for 1.2 billion in its first five days of availability.
Fourth place went to “The Last of Us.” The HBO series was watched for 1.1 billion minutes from March 6-12, which included a majority of the viewership of Episode 7, which debuted hours before Nielsen’s window began, and a small portion of viewership for Episode 8, which debuted hour before the window closed.
“Luther: The Fallen Sun” debuted at No.

“The Night Agent” might not be pulling “Wednesday” numbers, but the new thriller series had a very strong first week on Netflix.
The Shawn Ryan-created thriller topped Netflix’s Global Top 10 English TV series list in its first week of availability, with 168.71 million hours viewed. That’s the most for Week 1 of a new Netflix series, English-language or otherwise, since “Wednesday.” And we’re only counting four days of viewing, as “The Night Agent” debuted on a Thursday; Sunday night is Netflix’s weekly cutoff.
Beyond new debuts, “The Night Agent’s” start was the single best week for a show since Season 2 of “Ginny & Georgia” premiered to 180 hours viewed. Last week marked the third-biggest week for the debut of a Netflix show since the streamer started publicizing the Top 10 lists.

It has been nearly a decade since the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. Despite multiple investigations, search efforts, and theories, there are more questions surrounding the tragic event than answers. The flight, commonly referred to as MH370, has been the subject of podcasts, influenced fictional series ("Manifest"), and inspired several documentaries, like Netflix's "MH370: The Plane That Disappeared," which released on Netflix on March 8.
"MH370: The Plane That Disappeared" examines the mysterious disappearance of the flight, highlights evidence that points to a number of mistakes made during the initial investigation, and dives into a handful of theories that attempt to make sense of the tragedy. Here is the true story of the puzzling missing MH370 airplane.

MH370: The Plane That Disappeared is a documentary series directed by Louise Malkinson.
239 missing persons, a mysterious cargo, theories about espionage, hijacking… one of the greatest mysteries in aviation history.
About the documentary series
MH370 is a mystery within a mystery: a plane that took off and quite simply disappeared without a trace. What happened to the Malaysian Airlines plane?
Right on March 7 – now almost ten years ago – a flight between Kuala Lumpur and Beijing that still remains, to this day, an unsolved mystery.
As for the documentary series… an exceptionally well-documented piece of work, which tries to cover all the angles and offer us theories about the disappearance of the flight, testimonies, cover all the aspects surrounding its disappearance, tell the stories of its crew members, and all the media coverage that surrounded the event.
Three episodes to immerse ourselves in one of the great journalistic mysteries of the modern era.

We will likely never know what really happened to Malaysian Airlines Flight 370. The Boeing 777 plane that captivated the world by disappearing first took off from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 12:42 a.m. local time on Saturday, March 8, 2014. The flight, known as MH370 under the Malaysian Airlines code, was supposed to arrive at the Beijing Capital International Airport around 6:30 a.m. but disappeared from radar at 1:21 a.m.
What followed was one of the most extensive search operations in history. The Malaysian government immediately launched a flawed investigation on the ground. The Australian government, which has superior naval investigative resources, led the search from the sea. Eventually, private companies and several other nations would also enter the fray with the singular purpose of finding any trace that MH370 left behind.
Unfortunately, it was all for naught. Aside from having a rough idea where the plane crashed in...

Planes go up. Planes go down. What planes don’t do is just vanish off the face of the Earth.” These are the words of aviation journalist Jeff Wise, who features in Netflix’s chilling new docuseries, MH370: The Plane that Disappeared. But on 8 March 2014, that’s precisely what happened. A Malaysia Airlines flight with 227 passengers and 12 crew on board departed its home capital of Kuala Lumpur and never landed at its planned destination of Beijing. What occurred after the aircraft last communicated with air traffic control 38 minutes after take-off has been the subject of innumerable theories in the years since – some plausible, some risible – many of which are explored in this three-parter. “It’s important that people still talk about MH370 and don’t just forget about it,” director Louise Malkinson tells me over Zoom. “It’s a mystery that hasn’t been solved and I think it’s...

February is over, and March is here at last! The days are getting longer, and though it may not seem like it quite yet, warmer weather and greener lawns are finally nearly here. Heck, the MLB season is now just a few weeks away, with Opening Day set for March 30.
But for many across the United States, this dream of spring is just that. To those with snow still in the short-term forecast, talk of warmth and good weather is but a mockery, a tease to torment the mind while the cold flakes fly. If you’re stuck inside and desperate for a distraction, we’ve got a list of new shows and movies coming to streaming this week that will help you preserve your sanity for at least a little longer.

March is a time for madness, whether it comes from basketball, Mercury retrograde, or a person’s home streaming habits. Netflix joins in on the chaos by updating its library with all three “Hangover” movies, a whole lot of workout content, “Magic Mike Xxl,” and much, much more.
On March 9, the streamer will premiere Part 2 of “You” Season 2, starring Penn Badgley, Charlotte Ritchie, and Ed Speleers. The five remaining episodes find Joe (Badgley) trapped in a volatile dance with London mayoral candidate and serial killer Rhys (Speleers), trying to prevent more murders but also not go down for the many he’s committed in the process. The trailer shows Joe and Kate (Ritchie) growing closer, more brushes with Kate’s wealthy socialite friends, and the return of Victoria Pedretti as Joe’s wife Love — or maybe the ghost of his wife, and of sins past.
