"Borderlands" is one of the most popular video game franchises of the 2000s. Now, it's becoming a movie, with Lionsgate hoping to turn it into a franchise for the big screen. Directed by Eli Roth, this video game adaptation has been in the works for a long, long time, but it's finally hitting theaters this summer. That being the case, the studio brought some new footage from the film to this year's CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and I was on hand to see what Roth cooked up.
One thing the movie has going for it is a stellar A-list cast led by Cate Blanchett ("Thor: Ragnarok") as Lilith. The ensemble also includes Jack Black ("The Super Mario Bros. Movie"), Kevin Hart ("Lift"), Jamie Lee Curtis ("Halloween"), Ariana Greenblatt ("Barbie"), Florian Munteanu ("Creed II"), and Edgar Ramirez ("Yes Day"). With James Gunn hard at work on “Superman” and stars like Dave Bautista expressing their desire to move on, it’s safe to say that the iteration of “Guardians of the Galaxy” that Marvel fans enjoyed for the past decade won’t be returning. But Zoe Saldaña hopes the comic book characters find their way back onto the big screen in some capacity.
In a recent appearance on The Discourse podcast (via The Playlist), the actress reiterated that she has no interest in returning as Gamora. But she added that she hopes another actress gets a chance to take on the role.
“I mean, so far, I think that she is for me,” Saldaña said when asked whether she’s done playing the superhero. “But I don’t think Gamora has gone for good.”

Today was the Disney annual shareholder meeting. One of the more odd claims that Disney CEO Bob Iger made involved a question regarding Universal Orlando’s upcoming Epic Universe theme park.
Epic Universe will open in 2025, and Disney has not made many announcements for Walt Disney World outside of rethemes, stage shows, and odd upcoming attractions like Smellephants on Parade.
During the meeting, a question was posed to Iger about the upcoming competition.
With Epic Universe opening up in Orlando in 2025, why hasn’t Disney prepared anything or placed more than just a handful of attractions in the pipeline to be ready for this in 2025 at Walt Disney World?
Iger responded by claiming that Disney had known about Epic Universe for years, and that its expansions, going back seven years, were in response to it.
Iger said, “Thank you very much for your question but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Marvel may be going through a rough patch lately, but the big film brand still had a few successes in the last year. One of those was the completion of James Gunn‘s trilogy of Space A-holes, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The Guardians were a big part of the MCU’s second phase. It was considered a big risk for the company since they were not a popular name and deemed too unconventional when compared to the other superhero films. Nevertheless, the first movie raised $773.3 million at the box office and made stars of Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista and James Gunn. Fast forward to phase five, Gunn has the Guardians go their separate ways, then proceeds to take his new position as the co-chief of the Dcu.
As sad as it was to see the group end their run in Vol. 3 (albeit with no casualties but still sad), Zoe Saldaña,...

There are tons of exported characters in the world of Invincible, given how the show pokes fun at the conventions of the superhero genre. While having a faux Justice League (that gets axed in the first episode of the show), other superhero archetypes have also found their way into the show, such as Shrinking Rae.

Given how similar the character is to The Atom and Ant-Man, and given the nature of the show, Shrinking Rae was bound to take a creative approach with her powers, and also employ a particular meme that has been making the rounds on the internet. However, the show proved it wrong too, in one of the most devastating and brutal scenes of the show, something right of The Boys.

The third installment of the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ was released on May 5th, 2023, after ‘Quantumania’ was deemed a commercial and critical failure, the movie was a much-needed success for the studio.
Gunn initially shared ideas for a third and final film in November 2014, then confirmed his return as writer and director in April 2017. However, Disney fired him from the project in July 2018 due to controversial Twitter (now X) posts. Gunn was reinstated by October of the same year. His return was made public in March 2019, and production resumed after his work on DC’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ and ‘Peacemaker’ series was over. Despite the movie being a success, Gunn never planned on staying with the MCU as at that point he was already named co-chairman and co-ceo of DC Studios and was about to start work on a new and rebooted Dcu, replacing Dceu.

Zoe Saldaña doesn’t think Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise is gone for good. The actress said this week it would be a “huge loss” for the MCU to say goodbye to its ragtag group of intergalactic heroes.
“I would think it would be a huge loss for Marvel if they didn’t find a way to bring back the Guardians of the Galaxy,” Saldaña said in an appearance on The Playlist. “It’s just such a fan-favorite group of misfits, you know? And then at the helm, they had a voice like James Gunn’s writing — which is just so marvelous for and very specific for this genre.”
Saldaña played Gamora in Marvel’s three Guardians films. Alongside her, Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), Groot (Vin Diesel) and Rocket the Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) made up the original Guardians. The group, including Gamora, also appeared in several other MCU installments,...

Gunn has moved on to DC, and some of Saldaña’s co-stars like Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer) have vowed that “Vol. 3” was their last “Guardians” movie.
“I mean, so far, I think that she is [gone for good] for me, but I don’t think Gamora has gone for good,” Saldaña answered, suggesting she is not interested in playing Gamora again at this time but certainly the character still exists within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its sprawling multiverse.

“It just doesn’t work”: Sylvester Stallone Trolls Himself, Revealed Why He Can Never Play Terminator
Having suffered paralysis in his lip, chin, and part of his tongue due to birth complications, which resulted in his speech becoming slurred, Sylvester Stallone was frequently picked on at schools. But Stallone did eventually overcome the odds and found his footing in Hollywood, starting with 1976’s Rocky, the Expendables star’s distinct accent becoming as iconic as the actor himself.
However, despite rising to stardom, the Rocky star playfully admitted that he could never play one major character following his slurred speech, which made his biggest rival an icon in the 80s.

Invincible’s showrunner and producer Simon Racioppa spoke about the challenges of getting audiences behind Omni-Man's redemption arc in Season 2 after everything he did in Season 1.
The former superhero has a lot going against him. The series started with Nolan Grayson murdering nearly the entire Guardians of the Globe team. By the end of the finale, Omni-Man had wiped out millions of innocents in several destructive acts of violence after being outed.
Needless to say, he is not the type of character one routes for.

After a healthy run of comedy and genre work, Karen Gillan felt it was time for a dramatic change.
Shortly before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s whirlwind press tour, Gillan returned to Australia where she shot Thor: Love and Thunder a couple years earlier, and joined the cast of Adam Cooper’s Sleeping Dogs, led by Russell Crowe. The twisty psychological crime drama follows Crowe’s retired homicide detective Roy Freeman, as his recovery from an experimental Alzheimer’s procedure prompts him to re-approach a murder case from a decade earlier. The films in the running for the 2024 Best Visual Effects Oscar are “The Creator,” “Godzilla Minus One,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” and “Napoleon.” Our odds currently indicate that “Godzilla Minus One” (10/3) is the frontrunner, followed in order by “The Creator” (18/5), the new “Guardians” entry (9/2), “Napoleon” (9/2), and the latest “Mission: Impossible” chapter (9/2).

Casting superhero characters is important, but at the same time, it's not important. During the '80s and '90s, audiences felt a certain thrill knowing that certain outsize movie stars would be playing Batman villains. Indeed, Jack Nicholson received top billing on Tim Burton's "Batman," and audiences were more keen to see an actor of such stature hamming it up as a murderous gangster clown. The same could be said of Danny DeVito as the Penguin, Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman, Jim Carrey as the Riddler, or Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze. Casting, in those cases, was more important than the character.
In the era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, however, that changed. The characters became more important than the casting. Audiences were drawn to MCU movies because they wanted to see Captain America, not because they were dying to see Chris Evans' interpretation of Captain America. Any number...

It's long been said that Marvel Studios has a villain problem. In many of the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the villains are typically bland, lack personality, and have incredibly simple motivations; they are usually spurred by revenge or an implacable lust for power. In the original Marvel Comics from which the MCU villains are all derived, readers are typically given months, years, even decades to understand a power-mad tyrant. As one-off movie villains, however, the characters are given short shrift, becoming mere monsters-of-the-week whom we may very likely never see again. Sometimes a talented actor or actress will be able to bring some pizzazz to a poorly written villain, but the fact remains that the villains remain poorly written.

Chadwick Boseman Once Revealed That He Initially Auditioned For Gotg Role & Not Black Panther! (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Chadwick Boseman was a talented actor who left us too soon, but his legacy, especially in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will always be remembered by the fans. He won hearts as Prince T’Challa, aka Black Panther, but if things had gone differently at Marvel Studios, he would have ended up in one of the Guardians of the Galaxy characters’ roles.
We saw Chadwick as Black Panther for the first time in Captain America: Civil War in 2016. He got his solo film in 2018, which was both commercially and critically successful. The film even won three Oscars. He was all set to return in the 2022 sequel but unfortunately passed away in 2020. He played a vital role in Avengers: Infinity War, but his character got blipped by Thanos’ snap at the end, and he returned...

In "Avengers: Endgame," it was revealed that the Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) had conceived of a way to stay a green-skinned muscle monster at all times while maintaining his ability to think and reason. Prior to this breakthrough, Bruce Banner only turned into the Hulk when he was angry, becoming an unreasoning brute keen only on destroying everything in front of him. Sadly, this development for the Hulk meant that audiences would not be able to see Ruffalo, a very good actor, in person any longer. In "Endgame" and in the TV series "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law," Ruffalo was realized only through motion-capture CGI. It's very good CGI, but it's not Ruffalo's real face. The last time we saw Ruffalo was during a brief spiritual out-of-body experience in "Endgame," and even then, he was a translucent ghost.

The casting directors for the Marvel Cinematic Universe have the Midas touch. Every role that they cast is golden!
Chris Pratt as Star-Lord is no exception. He perfectly embodies the fun but complex hero in several films across the franchise.
However, he faced stiff competition from a talented batch of actors to earn a chance to join the Avengers.
In a franchise that already had several (expertly cast) actors named Chris on the team, he was introduced as the plucky and smart-mouthed Star-Lord (aka Peter Quill) in 2014′s Guardians of the Galaxy.
Since then, he’s stepped out with the team of heroes multiple times, most recently in 2023′s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
While he is now synonymous with the part, we did some digging and rounded up 15 other actors who auditioned for the opportunity. Interestingly, there are even rumors about who were the second and third choices.

The screenplay to the 2014 mega-hit "Guardians of the Galaxy," the 10th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was credited to director James Gunn and longtime Hollywood screenwriter Nicole Perlman. Perlman also has story credits on the films "Captain Marvel" and "Pokémon Detective Pikachu," and has previously been attached to a sequel to the 1986 Jim Henson film "Labyrinth," as well as film adaptations of the 1980s toy properties "Visionaries" and "M.A.S.K."
Perlman, according to an old article on the Marvel website, was recruited into the Marvel writing room way back in 2009 and was offered the opportunity to write a spec script for a "lesser" Marvel property as a test of her style and working capabilities. She selected "Guardians of the Galaxy," a Marvel title that had been rebooted by authors Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning the year before. Perlman said to her interviewer that this was a common...

It has been an odd year for Disney at the box office. The studio has had more misfires than it has had successes — and even some of those successes were pretty muted. "Elemental" is perhaps the prime example as Pixar's latest seemed straight-up doomed on arrival before having a miraculous turnaround, leading it to a $496 million worldwide take against a $200 million budget. Most of the studio's other big-budget films haven't been quite as lucky. To illustrate that point, James Cameron's "Avatar: The Way of Water" actually remains one of the studio's highest-grossing movies of 2023 despite the fact that it was released in 2022.
"The Way of Water" hit theaters on December 16, 2022, capping off a 13-year journey for the sequel. It made a ridiculous amount of money before the calendar rolled over to 2023 and ultimately wound up as the third biggest movie of all time with $2.32 billion to its name,...

A dubious brand strategy and underperforming films like Wish and The Marvels have led the once-golden studio into disarray
For its 100th anniversary this year, Disney received a bucket of ice-cold water to the face. It may sound momentary, but somehow it’s the gift that has been giving all year, from the box office nosedive of Marvel’s Ant-Man sequel, to lower-than-expected international numbers for an expensive Little Mermaid remake, to series-low grosses on Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones sequel. This continued all the way to November, when The Marvels outright flopped and Disney’s 100th-birthday cartoon Wish opened to an underwhelming number. It marks the first year since 2014, pandemic era not included, that the company failed to produce a billion-dollar hit.
Financially speaking, the only bright spots were Elemental and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, both of which held up following surprisingly soft opening weekends. And while Guardians scored good reviews,...

The superhero realm is buzzing with the latest news about “Superman: Legacy.” There’s a strong hint that Michael Rooker might join the cast. Famous for his roles in James Gunn’s films, Rooker’s presence in the movie seems almost a given.
Director James Gunn, renowned for his work on “Guardians of the Galaxy,” is steering this new Superman story. He has a history of including Rooker in his projects. Remember Rooker’s Yondu from “Guardians”? He made a cameo in Vol. 3, despite his character’s earlier demise. Their friendship is deep. Gunn once admitted he nearly skipped directing “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” because it didn’t include Rooker.
Now, onto Rooker’s possible role in “Superman: Legacy.” While some fans speculated he might play Pa Kent, insider Jeff Sneider suggests otherwise. Rooker could be General Sam Lane, Lois Lane’s father. If true, this leaves us...

The interconnection between power and responsibility in the superhero world has been sanctified since the day the first caped crusader decided to fight against injustice, but in the world of Invincible, the connection is shown in a rather cynical, non-conformist approach, which leads to questions being raised regarding the necessity of such superpowered individuals and whether their presence is truly for the betterment of humankind. After kicking off the second season with a glimpse into their own version of the multiverse, Invincible dials down the pace to delineate the aspect of accountability for superheroes and the lack of it as well, which leaves severe repercussions that even time cannot mend.
In the previous episode, Mark’s continuous pleading about letting him operate as a superhero once again finally convinced Cecil, and he agreed to let him operate for Gda. In the previous season, Mark assisted a team of astronauts on a Mars mission,...

This article contains spoilers for Invincible season 2 episode 2.
Adapted from a comic that ran for 144 serialized issues, Prime Video’s Invincible has a lot of plot to get through if it wants to hit its seven-to-eight season target.
That means that any given episode of the show features abundant background material with supporting characters in addition to the usual Mark Grayson a.k.a. Invincible (Steven Yeun) hijinx. The latest example of a seemingly unimportant character getting prominent billing comes in season 2 episode 2 “In About Six Hours I Lose My Virginity to a Fish.” While Mark prepares to fulfill the unfortunate promise of the episode’s title, the plot occasionally drifts over to focus on a very strange astronaut named Rus Livingston (voiced by Sonic the Hedgehog himself: Ben Schwartz).
But who exactly is Rus Livingston? Where did he come from? And how did he come to be the superhero “The Shapesmith.

Our individual past, differing background, and experience shapes our lives in major ways. But we aren’t defined only by those aspects, it’s the choices and motives that assess one’s true estimate. Maybe this holds true for superpowered human/Viltrumite hybrids as well, even though the titular character of Amazon Prime’s hit animated superhero series Invincible feels otherwise after how things ended in the last season of the series. Yes, the much-anticipated, instant hit Image Comics’ animated series adaptation has returned with its second season and has started off with a brilliant first episode that carries on the aftereffects of the last season through a peek at the Invincible universe’s iteration of the multiverse.

Anyone who’s spent any significant time reading comic books will tell you no story—or even a character’s life—ends. They just take time outs. So it apparently goes for comic book movies too following the latest bombshell report from Variety, which seems to confirm a major rethink is in progress at Marvel Studios. And this would include undoing the “ending” of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
As per the trade, in a moment of unusual commercial volatility for Marvel Studios following the anemic response to several recent films, including Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantamania just last February, as well as steeply declining interest in Marvel’s Disney+ TV output, the studio is in the beginning of a course correction that is putting all options on the table. Debbie Grayson (Sandra Oh) is tormented by a cabinet door that won’t shut. It suffered a shoddy repair job following the calamity that upended Debbie’s life one month ago, when her husband, Nolan (J.K. Simmons), the extraterrestrial superhero known as Omni-Man, revealed his mission to colonize Earth for his homeland of Viltrum. Nolan leveled the city of Chicago, killing thousands of people and nearly murdering their son, Mark (Steven Yeun), before flying off into the atmosphere. Debbie’s frequent trips to the kitchen for glasses of wine culminate in clashes with the door, which remains slightly ajar—a stubborn symbol of the anger and grief that she hasn’t figured out how to compartmentalize.

Matthew Vaughn is no stranger to the superhero genre being the director of Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class and has a suggestion for Marvel Studios and DC as “superhero fatigue” continues to be a topic of conversation.
“I think at least DC is under; I think James Gunn and [Peter Safran] they’ve got a good chance of popping, and hopefully, [Kevin] Feige will go back to less is more and make less films and concentrate on making them great,” Vaughn said in an interview with Screen Rant.
Vaughn also feels that superhero movies rely too much on CGI saying that it has “f***ed up everything as well because you feel like you’re watching a video game.”
“You’re not with the characters. Apart from Guardians, I still think Groot and the racoon are f***ing pieces of genius, that I feel so much for them. So I’ll be intrigued,...

Keith Giffen, known both as a comic book writer and artist whose characters have appeared in live-action franchises from Marvel and DC Comics, has died. He was 70 years old and had worked in comics since 1976.
Giffen was known for having a hand in the creation of characters including Lobo, Guardians of the Galaxy furry teammate Rocket Raccoon and the modern Jaime Reyes version of Blue Beetle. He also wrote acclaimed runs of “Justice League” and the “Legion of Super-Heroes,” as well as creating the cult fourth-wall-breaking character Ambush Bug (a decade earlier than Deadpool).
He died Sunday of a stroke, according to media reports (first reported by Bleeding Cool), but the news of his death wasn’t made public until Wednesday evening.

Today, servers for 2020’s Marvel’s Avengers were officially shut down. While this decision will likely not surprise those who have followed the game since its troubled launch, it is a surprise in the grand scheme of things when you consider how high expectations for that title once were. Unfortunately, that game’s official shutdown is also the latest in a line of relative failures for Marvel’s highest-profile games.
Several other recent Marvel games have been shut down since their releases. Marvel’s Midnight Suns and Guardians of the Galaxy both reportedly failed to meet sales expectations. When some of this information was recently pointed out by Twitter user Neb, Marvel reporting account CanWeGetSomeToast suggested that Marvel is aware of these failings and is eyeing the progress of upcoming projects like EA’s Black Panther and Iron Man games to see if they should internalize future Marvel gaming projects.

While this didn’t come as too big of a shock with audiences realizing that this movie would be the last time these Guardians teamed up, emotions would run high thanks to the impact they had on the MCU for almost a decade.

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe charged down the home stretch of the Infinity Saga with "Avengers: Endgame," audiences were primed for three hours worth of falling action. The first part of this long-awaited finale (which kicked off ten years earlier with 2008's "Iron Man") concluded with Thanos activating the Infinity Gauntlet, which wiped out half of all life in the universe. We watched in shock as Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Star-Lord, Scarlet Witch, Black Panther and others disintegrated into nothingness. Thanos had seemingly won the war. So this second part had to get all of the key players back in the game and stage the climactic battle that would end in triumph for our heroes.

Before Chris Pratt and James Gunn managed to sneak an F-bomb past Kevin Feige and the censors in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," Marvel directors had to be a little more subtle about their profanity. Pratt's delivery of the line in the third "Guardians" movie marked the first time the F-word had made it into a Marvel movie, signaling a truly seismic shift in cinematic history that will no doubt one day be mentioned in the same breath as the advent of technicolor or indeed the invention of film itself.
But Star-Lord snapping at Nebula is arguably not the most offensive thing to have happened in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — and no, we're not talking about the CGI in "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania." No, the most dubious line yet delivered came all the way back in 2012.
