Movie superheroes are intrinsically tied to comic books. The language, the shape of the narrative arcs and the visuals are nearly always either inspired by or reacting against the genre as established in four colours. Even supposedly grounded and gritty takes like M Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable use Bruce Willis’s poncho to signify a cape, with every shot framed to look like a comic book panel.
The most faithful screen realization of that imagery is usually the lavish CGI cinema spectacle, with TV all too often seen as its poor relation. The truth is, TV superheroism is now a genre all of its own, with its own tropes, rules and language that have for the most part left the comics far behind.

Before Luke Mitchell made a home on Chicago Med this season, the ubiquitous Australian actor appeared on many, many TV shows, including Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Blindspot, The Code, Legacies and Big Sky.
But it’s Mitchell’s breakout Stateside role on The CW’s The Tomorrow People, where he played the superpowered group’s leader John Young, that stands out for the actor. When asked which of his past characters he would like to revisit, Mitchell is quick to single out the short-lived series, which aired during the 2013-14 TV season.

If you are a TV fanatic, you've likely watched your fair share of CW shows. So, you already know that if you've seen an actor in one CW series, you've likely seen them again in another. This means you're probably already familiar with Melissa Roxburgh but don't even realize it.
Starting out in installments of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies, the actress transitioned into broadcast television the following year.
To her credit, Melissa Roxburgh has become somewhat of a sci-fi siren of the small screen, often appearing in roles on shows with fantastical elements like time travel or supernatural monsters.
In recent years, she's gained notoriety, having developed a relationship with Netflix the same way she did with the CW. However, beyond being a serial series guest star, Roxburgh has had a handful of significant film roles that have shown she is a powerhouse of talent in her own right.

The 21st century is when everything changes.
British science fiction has been a lot of things. It was both cheesier and campier than its American counterpart, and yet also darker, grittier, and less afraid to tackle grown-up themes and bleaker outcomes. It had been a joke, and critically acclaimed, and it had all but died off except for some under-the-radar contenders.
And then something major happened: Doctor Who came back. It was always going to happen eventually – just look how many times The Tomorrow People has been remade. But Doctor Who didn’t just come back, it came back and became the biggest show in the country, on purpose.
Suddenly, the people in charge thought that maybe TV shows about ideas, and technology, and realities ahead of and besides our own could draw an audience, only this time they were taking it seriously and spending actual money on it. And...

Mitchell will play a new staff member at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center in the new season of Chicago Med, TVLine reports. Dr. Mitch Ripley is an ER physician with a past connection to Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt), the hospital’s head of psychiatry. He comes from a troubled background, which led him to cross paths with Dr. Charles when he was growing up.
The addition of Mitchell to the Chicago Med cast comes after several high-profile exits in season 8, including the departures of Brian Tee, who played Dr. Ethan Choi, and Nick Gehlfuss, who played Dr. Will Halstead. Both had been with the show since its first season.

Here is a wrap-up of all the news you need to know from Wednesday, November 29, 2023.
After saying goodbye to countless cast members over the last few years, Luke Mitchell is joining the cast of Chicago Med.
We previously reported that Dr. Charles would be getting a blast from the past, and thanks to Deadline's exclusive, we can reveal it will be in the form of Mitchell's Dr. Mitch Ripley.
Don't get too attached to that name because the outlet states that there's a possibility the name could change.
Okay then.
As of now, Mitchell is on board in a recurring capacity, but there is the option to expand him to series regularly.
That, we guess, will be based on the reaction to the arc being cooked up involving the actor.
Chicago Med Season 9: Everything We Know
Mitchell is one of the best actors out there, so we really hope this works out for him.

Chicago Med has tapped Blindspot vet Luke Mitchell to join its hospital staff, our sister site Deadline reports.
As TVLine exclusively reported, Mitchell’s character, currently named Dr. Mitch Ripley, is an early thirtysomething male Emergency Department doctor who has a past connection to Dr. Charles (played by Oliver Platt). The new character — who is set to recur on the NBC drama, with the potential for a series-regular upgrade in Season 10 — comes from a troubled background, which led him to cross paths with Dr. Charles when he was growing up.

So many of our favorite celebrity couples have come and gone over the years, but there's one famous pairing who are still going strong: Robbie Amell and Italia Ricci. The longtime couple have been together for 16 years. Although they initially met on the set of 2005's "Cheaper by the Dozen 2," they didn't begin dating until they both starred in 2007's "American Pie Presents: Beta House." Nine years later, Amell and Ricci officially tied the knot in 2016, and they expanded their family in 2019.
While neither Amell nor Ricci talk about their relationship much in interviews, they do give fans a peek into their personal lives by sharing photos of their biggest milestones as a couple on Instagram. The social media platform is also where Amell and Ricci update fans on their latest acting projects. You may know Amell from TV series like "The Tomorrow People," "The Flash," and "Upload." Tales from Middleton High is, as you may have already guessed, an anthology film centred around a high school. Five tales of what writer/director Zach Lorkiewicz refers to as “pop horror” related by Principal Clemens who is introduced in a spoof of PBS’ “Masterpiece Theater”.
The first segment “Pep” chronicles the battle between the Pom Poms and the Cheerleaders to win the 85th Annual Pep Rally Dance Off. The Poms have never won before but this year Penelope has something up her sleeve. Running just about ten minutes, “Pep” is mostly sendups of high school life building to a bloody final gag. Funny rather than scary it gets Tales from Middleton High off to a good start.

If you’ve ever been aboard an international flight, you know just how crowded those things can get. So naturally, the “Manifest” cast is pretty huge. First released on NBC and now streaming on Netflix, the record-breaking show follows the passengers of a plane that disappears mid-flight and lands five years later without explanation, or anyone on board noticing something was wrong.
But once they land, the Flight 828 passengers find their lives forever changed — and forever connected — through a series of visions dubbed “Callings,” which drive the 828ers to solve crimes, uncover mysteries and continually reunite thanks to the influences of a force they never fully understand.
“Manifest” just returned with the first half of a super-sized 20-episode fourth and final season, and as the series starts to pay off the promise that “it’s all connected,” many of the 828 passengers make their return, along with some new faces — or in Cal’s case,...

Cruelty, destruction and perfect hair are all in a day’s work for Luke Mitchell, who’s currently playing one of the biggest, baddest Big Bads that Mystic Falls has ever seen.

Becoming a producer Sarah Schechter love baseball again. Today the powerhouse behind a record-breaking 17 current television series, Schechter found her way in the business making movies.
“When I first started working in film, what became so nice about watching sports was you didn’t know what was going to happen,” she says. “When you’re reading so many scripts, you start to feel like you know what’s going to happen in each one. Then you work on projects where you read the script over and over again, and you don’t have surprises. So I kind of fell back in love with baseball, particularly, because it was like, “Oh, I don’t know what’s gonna happen here. There’s no script to read. You’re going to have to wait till the end.’”

All eight seasons of Arrow are currently available on Netflix, but as is the case with the rest of The CW shows, Oliver Queen will have to leave the streaming service eventually.
Late last year, the shortened eighth and final season gave the Green Arrow an ending worthy of the character that kickstarted the multiverse of superheroes. Granted, we didn’t have a main villain to unify the arc, and most of the time, Oliver was facing fate itself, in a race to preserve the world from the threat of the Anti-Monitor and prepare for the “Crisis” event. But still, the ten episodes paid homage to the series in a lot of ways and almost made the emotional farewell to the green-hooded hero of Star City bearable. Almost.

Luke Mitchell with Jessica McNamee.
Luke Mitchell shot Andrew Traucki’s Black Water: Abyss, a survival thriller about five people who are attacked by killer crocodiles, in a purpose-built pool near Brisbane, but it was no picnic.
“The fear factor was real. There were tricky conditions as we were immersed in rising water in the dark with only our headlamps and torches for illumination,” the actor tells If after returning to his home in Los Angeles.
Mitchell readily accepted the role for several reasons. He wanted to “get my hands dirty” after playing Captain John Abraham in The Code, a military legal drama which screens on CBS All Access in the Us and here on 10 All Access.
It was his first ever genre film, it enabled him to come back to his native Queensland, and it was his first chance to work with Jessica McNamee.

“There’s a quote that, ‘You cannot be what you cannot see,’ and we think there’s a lot of truth in that,” says Peter Ash Lee, the New York-based editor behind the Asian-American arts and culture magazine Burdock. “Growing up, we didn’t see many reflections of ourselves in media, and when we did, they were often portrayals lacking any depth.”
The feelings of being “unseen” and a desire for multi-dimensional Asian-American experiences were what inspired Lee and his sister, Hannah, to create Burdock, which launched in April at New York’s Apex for Youth Gala.
“We’ve often been painted with a monolithic brush, but the Asian community contains so many multitudes and no two stories are identical — there are thousands of unique experiences and stories to tell,” Lee says.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question: Inspired by the return of “Deadwood,” what’s another show that deserves a movie follow-up /wrap-up?
Joyce Eng (@joyceeng61), GoldDerby
I’m going to be that person and say nothing deserves a follow-up. Sure, some shows “deserve” one, like “Deadwood,” but nothing really does. Things end and that’s Ok! Even if it’s a frustrating non-ending or cliffhanger because you got canceled. There are too many things continuing and being rebooted and revived that don’t need to be. And yes, I know there’s a huge difference between ending on your own terms and getting abruptly axed with no closure, but I’d rather just be content with what I already got than hope a two-hour movie 10 years later lives up to my expectations. Because let’s be real,...

Luke Mitchell is an actor whose versatility sparks a different impression for each type of viewer. His fellow Aussies may recognize him from playing heartthrobs on the teen series “H20: Just Add Water” and the long-running “Home and Away” soap. Others may have caught him in regular roles on sci-fi or superhero series like “The Tomorrow People” and “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” and as a murderous villain in NBC’s “Blindspot.” But Mitchell’s most prominent role to date is the lead in CBS’ new procedural, “The Code,” as Captain John “Abe” Abraham. The drama, which premiered April 9 and is now airing on Mondays, follows six lawyers in the Marine Corps in and out of the courtroom. Mitchell sat down with Variety to talk about doing an American accent, his body of work, and his Australian roots.

Legends of Tomorrow may have ended its season earlier than much of its DC TV brethren, but it remains in the hearts and minds of devoted viewers everywhere. To be honest, this could end up being my favorite evening of television.

Chicago – Anyone who has ever held a big secret knows that the weight of it is usually worse than the secret itself. The only thing worse than that is when the secret you’re holding back is your true self. “Love, Simon” explores the all-too-familiar, high school coming of age story, but with the added complication of coming to terms with your sexuality and identity.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The importance of this film is undeniable, especially when it comes to mainstream representation. Director Greg Berlanti understands this and shows all due respect to the tough topic. With all of Berlanti’s work on teen-based television shows (“Dawson’s Creek”, “No Ordinary Family”, “The Tomorrow People”, etc), he clearly understands how to highlight the emotional complexity, while keeping the character relatable and grounded. “Love, Simon” isn’t lacking in flair either, with a colorful dance sequence and more red herrings than a fishing trip.

We finally know who will play all three leading witches on the Charmed reboot!
According to Deadline, Madeleine Mantock has been cast as the third and final sister on The CW pilot.
She will take on the role of Macy, who is a practical, ambitious, and intelligent geneticist who is shocked to the core when she learns that the supernatural world exists.
The potential series has been in the works at the young-skewing network for over a year now. It was delayed from last year's pilot slate because The CW felt there was more work to be done on it.

The network describes the reboot as follows: “This fierce, funny, feminist reboot of the original series centers on three sisters in a college town who discover they are witches."
"Between vanquishing supernatural demons, tearing down the patriarchy, and maintaining familial bonds, a witch’s work is never done.

Get ready to invoke the power of three: The CW’s Charmed reboot has cast its last supernatural sibling.
Madeleine Mantock (The Tomorrow People) will play Macy in the potential series, TVLine has learned. The character is an über-smart geneticist who’s very down-to-earth, driven… and completely gobsmacked when she learns that the supernatural world actually exists.
The original version of the witchy drama aired on The WB from 1998 to 2006 and starred Shannen Doherty, Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs and (toward the end) Rose McGowan. The update will follow a trio of sisters who live in a college town and...

Rupert Graves and Ellie Kendrick play humanoid space-farers whose mission is interrupted by the sounds of Beethoven
Director and co-writer Daniel Fitzsimmons makes his interesting feature debut with a smart lo-fi sci-fi. It’s a claustrophobic chamber piece, occasionally opened out into weird interplanetary dreamscapes.
Fitzsimmons is making his production budget count, and he’s getting the most from his two actors: Ellie Kendrick and Rupert Graves, giving intelligent and committed performances. There are derivative touches here, taken from any and every post-Kubrick sci-fi you’ve ever seen, but the influences are capably absorbed and it reminded me very agreeably of the 70s TV show The Tomorrow People.

Bosch, the acclaimed Amazon crime series, has received a renewal for season 5, just as the release date for season 4 finally arrives...
Amazon has a feeling that it can’t let go... when it comes to the retro-noir contemporary crime procedural series, Bosch, which stars Titus Welliver as the titular troubled Lapd detective. That’s because the retail monolith’s streaming platform has renewed the series for season 5! Additionally, Amazon has provided the long-awaited announcement revealing the (unlucky) date on which season 4 premieres on Prime: Friday, April 13th.
The preemptively ordered Bosch season 5 will arrive as a partial restoration of the show’s status quo, since April’s season 4 will be the manifestation of a major sea change behind the scenes that saw showrunner/executive producer Eric Overmyer exit the series to migrate over to fellow Amazon peak TV offering The Man In The High Castle. However, Overmyer...
