A transformational journey (literally and figuratively)
stuckeren30 October 2023
Saw this at the Philadelphia Film festival. The director and main subject of the film were in attendance and provided a Q and A session at the end. Very beautifully shot and human film, telling the story of a shady operation that promises to change the colors of people's eyes through surgery. Sometimes feels like a documentary, sometimes feels like a narrative film. The film follows a person's journey of transformation that begins when he finds out about the eye color changing surgery on social media from his home in Miami, to being offered free surgery by a company in India with the condition they use his image and testimonial in promotional materials, to travelling to India to get the surgery, to it's less than ideal aftermath. The film was shot with empathy for those seeking and receiving the surgery, and demonstrates how plastic surgery companies prey on and manipulate people's insecurities to make money. Recommended.
