"You can't close this off to other people..." MGM+ has revealed a very long official trailer for a sci-fi thriller series called Earth Abides, yet another new streaming science fiction show to watch. It's ready to debut and will be streaming on the Prime Video MGM+ channel starting in December. Based on the classic book by George R. Stewart. "The award-winning Earth Abides is one of the most influential science fiction novels of all time, a mix of dystopian horror and a literary exploration of loneliness. It remains a fresh, provocative – and all too relevant – story of apocalyptic pandemic, societal collapse, rebirth." After months of isolation, Isherwood "Ish" Williams, learns that most of the world has died off due to a mysterious illness. Yet despite his instincts to further isolate, Ish leads the charge to develop a new civilization. Alexander Ludwig stars as Ish, along with Jessica Frances Dukes, Aaron Tveit,...

In the new footage for Ironheart (which releases Tuesday, June 24 on Disney+), we see Dominique Thorne’s genius inventor Riri Williams as she aims to “build something undeniable.” The clip offers another look at her high-tech outfit (5/5, if you ask us), as she flips a massive truck and zooms past traffic à la Iron Man. But will she have to do some “questionable things” in order to achieve greatness?

There has been plenty of fat to chew on this week at MIPCOM in Cannes. The television industry is clearing a path forwards after a very difficult few years, and that route became clearer during the four-day confab. Below, we identify some of the key takeaways from the Croisette.
Squeezed Middle In Scripted
Channing Dungey
Conversations about the future of TV drama almost a year after the U.S. strikes ended dominated chatter at this year’s MIPCOM. What was being communicated to us was an extension of the ‘squeezed middle’ chat that dominated conversation in Edinburgh a few weeks ago. That confab’s chatter was focused on non-scripted, but these proclamations were concentrated on drama. Effectively, buyers are still looking for the odd splashy tentpole, maybe a buzzy limited series here and there, but are mainly beefing up catalogs with cheaper, higher-volume, bankable and returnable fare.

“Netflix is very practical,” EP/Showrunner Mike O’Malley told EW, which first broke the news about the premiere date. “If a lot of people watch the show, then there’s a real chance that we can make more. Heels has nailed its landing after Starz canceled the series in 2023. Netflix and Lionsgate Worldwide Television Distribution Group have agreed to a licensing agreement for the two seasons of critically-acclaimed drama from Mike O’Malley.
Deadline has learned there is an option for a third season, but that all depends on the availability of stars Stephen Amell, who booked the lead role in the Suits spinoff, and Alexander Ludwig, who’s toplining Earth Abides for MGM+. A spokesman for Lionsgate declined to comment.
Heels revolves around the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small-town pro wrestling. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals (Amell and Ludwig) war over their late father’s legacy. Heels might be headed back to the ring.
The drama, which was unceremoniously canceled along with a couple more series as Starz cleaned house in September, has been licensed to Netflix by Lionsgate Worldwide Television Distribution. With the acquisition, Netflix will have non-exclusive rights to the two-season, 16-episode library of the wrestling drama starring Stephen Amell (Arrow) and Alexander Ludwig (Vikings).
Sources also note that while Netflix has not renewed the series, the streamer could wind up doing so should Heels perform well on the platform. Those same sources also caution that a third season, even in success, could still be a logistical challenge. Amell — a die-hard wrestling fan who often would perform his own stunts on Heels — signed on in February as the lead in NBC’s highly anticipated spinoff of Suits. The offshoot of the former USA Network original is one of but five pilots in the works at NBC.
