Annecy, the world’s leading animation film festival, unveiled its official program on Wednesday, with a line-up that includes features from some 20 countries across Europe, Asia and the Americas and a range of styles, from the big-budget 3D computer animated feature Into the Mortal World from Chinese director Zhong Ding; to the hand-drawn title Balentes by Italian filmmaker Giovanni Columbu, and the digital cut out animation of Mexican filmmaker Aria Covamonas: The Great History of Western Philosophy.
Covamonas’ debut premiered at the Rotterdam festival, and Annecy’s 2025 lineup features a best-of selection of recent fests, including Berlinale highlights Lesbian Space Princess and Tales from the Magic Garden, and several features premiering in Cannes next month, including The Magnificent Life of Marcel Pagnol from The Triplets of Belleville director Sylvain Chomet; Dandelion’s Odyssey from Japanese director Momoko Seto; and Death Does Not Exist from Canadian filmmaker Felix Dufour-Laperrière.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, it seemed as if Pixar could do no wrong. The animation studio, in league with Disney, pushed forward the idea of all-computer-animated feature films back in 1995 with the release of "Toy Story," gaining a lot of critical attention for its clever writing and penchant for heart-rending sentimentality. It wouldn't be until the release of "Cars 2" in 2011 that critics would begin to cool to the studio. And even still, "Cars 2" was a $559 million hit.
In the 2010s, Pixar began to skew further and further away from original ideas and lean heavier into sequels or prequels to its earlier hits. Indeed, of the 10 Pixar features released in that decade, six were part of an established franchise. Some of these films were excellent, but the studio nevertheless seemed a few years beyond its creative peak.

Disney is at it again, milking another beloved movie for a sequel no one was really asking for. On March 20, 2025, Pixar officially announced Coco 2, slated for a 2029 theatrical release. The announcement, made via Pixar’s X account (@Pixar), immediately set off a firestorm of reactions—ranging from excitement to outright skepticism. While the original Coco (2017) was a critical and commercial smash, earning over $800 million worldwide and an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, its heartfelt story felt complete. So why revisit the Rivera family after all this time—especially when Grandma Coco is, well, dead?
Disney’s Sequel Obsession Continues
This announcement comes amid a larger pattern of Disney churning out sequels for films that arguably don’t need them. Inside Out 2 is set for release in 2024, Zootopia 2 in 2025, Frozen 3 in 2026, and Toy Story 5 is on the way. Meanwhile, Bob Iger continues to insist Disney is “focused...

Pixar’s “Coco” is coming back for another song.
Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that a sequel to Pixar’s 2017 Oscar-winning feature “Coco” would be coming soon during Thursday’s annual meeting of shareholders webcast. The company then announced “Coco 2” will debut in theaters in 2029, with original director Lee Unkrich returning to direct, alongside original co-director Adrian Molina.
Since “Coco” was released into theaters on Nov. 22, 2017, its importance to the company has only grown. The movie, directed by Lee Unkrich, has inspired everything from an elaborate live show at the Disney Parks to a dinner theater experience on the recent Disney Treasure cruise ship. It has also become a key part of Disney’s Halloween offerings, with multiple airings on linear Disney channels during the holiday and major placement on Disney+.
And the emphasis on “Coco” is only expanding.

Warner Bros has just made some razor-sharp release-date changes ahead of CinemaCon, ones that could potentially keep the Burbank, CA lot more toward the black this year than in the red.
In a year when there were four $100 million-plus auteur-driven movies — one of which, Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17, recently misfired — Warners Bros distribution has taken the pressure off the studios’ schedule in that regard, and even placed a potential tentpole into the year: Zach Cregger’s anticipated genre movie Weapons on August 8.
Cregger’s next movie after Barbarian was previously scheduled for MLK weekend 2026, on January 16. What kept Warners from moving the pic starring Josh Brolin, Julia Garner and Alden Ehrenreich was that the theatrical release was tied to Imax screens — can’t give up those auditoriums. In fact, what made all of the release-date changes feasible for Warners was that each was tied to Imax bookings. As...

Warner Bros. enacted some significant housekeeping around its film release schedule on Wednesday, including a new date for the highly anticipated Paul Thomas Anderson film starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
Now officially titled “One Battle After Another,” the Anderson project is shrouded in mystery but said to be an American crime thriller. Previously dated for Aug. 8, the film will now open nationwide on Sept. 26.
Insiders familiar with the movie said the minor push comes as the studio helps outfit U.S. movie theaters with VistaVision projection systems to accommodate their director’s vision. A move out of August to late September also squeaks “One Battle” out of the summer box office season and places it closer to the awards corridor, Anderson’s natural habitat.. DiCaprio will costar with Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro, Regina Hall and Teyana Taylor.

While it is safe to say that the film industry has survived to 2025, one of the greatest casualties of the Hollywood strikes of 2023 has been the entertainment industry’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. The continued push into Hollywood consolidation inevitably leads to debt, which leads to developmental programs and jobs being cut. Warner Bros. Discovery and the Paramount/Skybound merger are only the most recent examples of this.
But one could argue there is also a growing sentiment that media CEOs are simply no longer interested or invested in putting more effort into diversity. Consider it a backlash to the backlashes of 2016 and 2020, the very ones that focused on pushing Hollywood to empower more filmmakers who are women and/or people of color. While the most recent USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative study does not quite show a decline in inclusion, it does reveal that the progress in finding, elevating,...

Pixar has thrilled with new and inventive feature films for the better part of 30 years, but the recently-announced Hoppers might be their most imaginative product yet. Putting a clever spin on the classic body swap concept, Hoppers will follow young Mabel (Piper Curda) who switches brains with a beaver as she tries to protect the local environment. Many details about the thoughtful new animated film were revealed at Disney's D23 fan expo in August 2024, and it proves that the sequel-obsessed studio still has a few new ideas up their sleeves.
Though details remain elusive, it is a good sign that Pixar might be turning a corner into a new creative direction. Most of the upcoming Pixar movies are sequels like Toy Story 5 and The Incredibles 3, and it appeared as if the studio that was known for pushing boundaries was getting complacent. However, what is known about Hoppers suggests that...

Some of the creatives who helped shape the transgender storyline for the Pixar series Win or Lose are mourning its loss after The Hollywood Reporter broke the news last week that the character at its center will now be portrayed as cisgender.

They have been in the business of making great profits. Even as far back as two years ago when I was at Pixar, we had a meeting with [then-ceo] Bob Chapek, and they were clear with us that they see animation as a conservative medium.”

While 2025 already has some huge blockbusters lined up, many of the biggest ongoing franchises will be taking the year off and returning in 2026 or later. There are many exciting sequels set for 2025, like Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning and Avatar: Fire and Ash. Other big franchises are set to return with reboots, like James Gunn's Superman. Despite the arrival of these enticing cinematic events, fans of certain franchises face extended waits.
The Hollywood strikes of 2023 held up the development of big franchises across the board, and the movie industry is still feeling the effects. Inside Out 2 director Kelsey Mann suggests Pixar has more original films in development than it seems, despite the studios latest surge of sequels. The various upcoming releases and confirmed titles Pixar has in development include Toy Story 5 and Incredibles 3. The line-up has led many to question whether Pixar will sacrifice original works to further rely on their well-established franchises, particularly as they come on the heels of Inside Out 2's blockbuster success.
In a recent interview with Empire, Mann, who has also contributed to various Pixar movies over the years, addressed these concerns, suggesting Pixars production pipeline may be more diverse than expected. He hints that there are many original projects currently in the works outside the public's view. Read Manns full response here:

Pixar's Inside Out 2 broke multiple records upon its theatrical release, and it's doing so again on Disney Plus, which is a massive win for the iconic company after the last four years. Since Toy Story hit theaters in 1995, Pixar has established itself as the gold standard for animation not only in quality of production, but in quality of narrative. Pixar's original movies are capable of inciting both laughter and tears, which is why they're successful. Inside Out 2 captured everything that made Pixar great, and in doing so restored the company to its throne atop the animation world.

While Marvel and Lucasfilm had their day at Disney’s recent D23 Expo, there’s an argument to be made that Pixar had some of the biggest flexes at the trade show. The animation studio revealed a new “Incredibles 3” sequel was in the works, revealed their mystery 2023 film as something called “Hoppers” and some new details about “Toy Story 5,” unveiled the inaugural trailer for their first TV series, “Win Or Lose,” and revealed the title for this new “Inside Out” series spin-off called, “Dream Factory.”
Coming off the hit of “Inside Out 2,” which grossed $1.6 billion worldwide and is currently the highest-grossing film of 2024, the highest-earning animation film of all time, and the tenth-highest-grossing movie of all time, Pixar and Docter are already thinking about an “Inside Out 3,” which is expected given the box office bonanza it yielded.

Disney CEO Bob Iger is currently on his second time around as head of the House of Mouse, but he doesn't want to stay there for too much longer. With his current contract running until 2026, Iger is not only focused on the success of the company, but finding the correct successor to take over when he retires again.
Iger previously worked for the company from 2005 to 2020 as the CEO before retiring and appointing former parks chief Bob Chapek as the new CEO in 2021. Chapek's leadership lasted little more than a year, with Iger returning to his position as CEO in late 2022. Reported by The Wrap, in a conversation with newly crowned Disney Legend, Kelly Ripa, he spoke about how he is "obsessed" with finding a successor, noting that this is one of the key parts of his decision to return to his former role. When casting a love interest for Alex Levy on “The Morning Show,” it was Jennifer Aniston who recommended Jon Hamm for the part of tech billionaire boyfriend Paul Marks.
Fans of the Apple TV+ drama (and/or basic privacy laws) know how well that worked out for the two characters at the end of Season 3, but Hamm may still reprise the role. Speaking with IndieWire, the Emmy-winning “Mad Men” actor — who is nominated twice this year for “The Morning Show” and “Fargo” — confirmed that. He voiced his interest in leading a feature rom-com with Aniston, a fellow nominee.
“I have no idea what it would look like,” Hamm said. “I think it would just have to be funny and fun and it would let us do what we both do very well, which is be charming and funny and compelling. I certainly wouldn’t say no to that.”

Sci-fi is becoming a major focus for Pixar, with 3 out of 4 upcoming movies falling into this genre. Toy Story 5 is not sci-fi, but it does continue a beloved franchise. Pixar's mixed results with sci-fi, like the disappointment of Lightyear, means its upcoming projects may not live up to the hype.
I'm a big fan of many Pixar projects, but the fact that most of the studio's upcoming movies all sit within my favorite category is a huge bonus that enhances my excitement ahead of their release. I'll admit that not every Pixar movie has hit home for me, but I've found most to be a thoroughly enjoyable watch. Away from Pixar, my viewing habits fall very heavily within a specific genre, which is why I'm so thrilled that Pixar's immediate future is aligning even more with my tastes.

At this year’s D23, Disney’s “ultimate fan event” held near Disneyland every two years, the company that leads Hollywood in creating world-class entertainment from beloved characters and time-tested stories wasn’t on its usual solid footing.
While the presentations featuring Disney luminaries from Pixar’s Pete Docter to Avatar’s James Cameron were impressive, there was also a keen sensation of déjà-vu. It was like eating at the Cheesecake Factory – there’s a giant, phonebook-sized menu, but everything still ends up tasting the same.
D23 was chock-full of announcements that signaled a doubling down on tested IP (intellectual property). At the convention, everything old was new again… and again… and again.
The presentation suggested that Disney is clearly on the back foot and retreating to what it knows best. This year, “Inside Out 2” broke what some considered a slump for Pixar, earning $1.59 billion; so did “Deadpool & Wolverine” for Marvel Studios,...

Last Friday, during the Disney Entertainment panel, Disney gave more information of the upcoming “Frozen III” film and announced Pixar’s new “Hoppers” film. Now we have an idea of when they will be released and it’s not anytime soon.
Of the two films, “Hoppers” is releasing first with a release date of March 6, 2026. Still quite a long time off.
“Frozen III” is shooting for a Thanksgiving weekend with a November 24, 2027. So it won’t be released for more than three years.
For the upcoming “Frozen” film we already know that there will be two parts so a “Frozen 4” will also be coming at some point in time.
“Hoppers” will be about a girl named Mabel who “transfers her consciousness into a robot beaver. She befriends a (real) royal Beaver named King George and helps him and his friends fend off a real estate developer.”
Yeah. So we will see how that goes.

Hot off of the recording-breaking run of Inside Out 2, Pixar has revealed some behind-the-scenes changes for their next film, Elio. Elio follows an eleven-year-old boy who is mistaken by aliens as Earth's ambassador. The film's teaser debuted back in June 2023 ahead of Elemental's theatrical run when it was still planned to be Pixar's next release. In October 2023, the movie was delayed to March 2025. Now, some details about changes behind the scenes on the movie have been revealed.
Speaking with The Wrap, Pixar chief creative officer Pete Doctor revealed some of the behind-the-scenes changes for Elio. Following D23, Disney has officially set release dates for the highly anticipated Frozen III as well as the latest Pixar film, Hoppers. While 2024 is barely over and 2025 is just on the horizon, Disney is staking claim to release dates for two films over two years in advance. Disney is letting family audiences know to mark their calendars for Frozen III, as the third entry in the multi-billion dollar animated franchise is coming to theaters in 2027.
Per Deadline, Disney has set Frozen III for release on November 24, 2027, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Frozen and Frozen II opened close to the Thanksgiving holiday and went on to gross $1 billion at the worldwide box office, so this is a smart move for Disney. Meanwhile, the studio has set Pixar's latest original film, Hoppers, for a March 6, 2026 release date. Announced at D23, Hoppers is about a young girl who can "hop" her consciousness into a robotic animal.

“Frozen 3” will glide into theaters in time for Thanksgiving… of 2027.
Disney has added the third Arendelle-set animated adventure to the film release calendar on Nov. 24, 2027. Both of the first two “Frozen” movies were also released around Turkey Day, on their way to becoming back-to-back $1 billion blockbusters.
The studio also planted a new Pixar movie, “Hoppers,” on the schedule for March 6, 2026. Jon Hamm and Bobby Moynihan will lead the voice cast of “Hoppers,” a body-swap comedy about a young girl who uses technology to understand the inner thoughts of animals.
The original “Frozen” became a massive sensation in 2013, generating nearly $1.3 billion worldwide and winning a slew of awards, including two Oscars. The 2019 sequel was even more commercially successful with $1.45 billion and, until recently, stood as the highest-grossing animated film in history. Coming out of D23, it’s not shocking to hear that Frozen 3 is getting the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Nov. 24, 2027 release date. That’s the traditional time when Frozen and Disney animated movies ‘let it go’ so to speak; har har har. On Friday night at Disney’s presentation, it was indicated that the threequel would open in 2027.
The first Frozen opened limited in one theater for five days in 2013 before blasting out wide on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Frozen 2 opened on the Friday before Thanksgiving in 2019. Together the two movies racked up $2.7 billion.
In addition, Pixar’s new movie about a human brain inside of a beaver, Hoppers, is opening on March 6, 2026. Warner Bros. has their animated version of The Cat in the Hat there. Well, someone’s gonna want to move there. Hoppers features the voices of Jon Hamm and Bobby Moynihan. The title was announced on...
