SPOILER: Bai left the forest farm and headed to division headquarter. He promised that he would report Ye's status to the superiors. Later, Ye was called by her superiors. She was accused for reading forbidden book and writing a letter that delivered anti-revolutionary ideas. She claimed that Bai was the person who lent her the book. Surprisingly, the official found Bai as the witness to accuse Ye for stealing the book. In order to draw the line with Ye, Bai even threw the book at Ye. Also, the letter was indeed written in Ye's handwriting which gave her no further space to explain. She was later jailed in a room with no heat, which made her frozen. Suddenly, Cheng Lihua who was the military representative found Ye. She offered Ye a way out, but with one condition, which was to accuse her father as anti-revolutionary even after his death. Ye's mother and sister had signed the paper already, but Ye turned it down at last.
