Exclusive: UTA has signed McMillion$ filmmakers Brian Lazarte and James Lee Hernandez as well as their company Fun Meter Productions for worldwide representation in all areas.
Lazarte and Hernandez’s critically acclaimed six-part docuseries McMillion$ bowed in February. Remezcla and Concā Vodka hosted a series of intimate events in Silver Lake to launch the first vodka Panamericano made combining ingredients from both the U.S. and Mexico as a prelude to Nalip’s Media Summit. Over the course of six days, they brought together some of L.A.’s most innovative Latino creatives in art, food, film, music, and more to celebrate the rich blend of cultures, passions, and experiences that give L.A. its carácter.
DJ Panamami provided special Latino music for dancing and listening. Concā Vodka provided food and specialty cocktails in a private home on Wednesday June 24 to honor Ambulante USA.
For over ten years in Mexico, Ambulante has provided bold documentary storytellers a platform to reach diverse audiences. Ambulante California is still a growing organization, and as Christina Davila gears up for the second edition of the festival in the U.S, this delightful reception kicked off their individual giving campaign, celebrated existing partners and began to develop new partnerships for the future. But most of all Remezcla and Concā Vodka hosted the event to celebrate documentary cinema and the upcoming Ambulante documentary festival tour September 19 - October 4, to take place in different public spaces all over the Greater La area. Including Pershing Square.
The director of Ambulante California, Christine Davila, unveiled part of the program which includes a doc from Guadalajara which so inspired me. She spoke about the particularities of the docs which are in fact universal in meaning. The official lineup will come soon and we'll have it for you as soon as Ambulante makes the announcement. Last year's program included films like "Alive Inside," "Living Stars," "Las Marthas," and "Bronx Obama."
On the other hand New York-based entertainment and culture outlet, Remezcla, was very well represented by Vanessa Erazo - its film section editor. Erazo briefly talked about Remezcla's new partnership with Conca, and screened a video blog documenting Costa Rican filmmaker Paz Fabrega, as she arrived to the World Premiere of her film "Viaje" at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. Fabrega's film is the first Costa Rican feature to screen at the renowned festival.
It was a beautiful night at a private residence in Silverlake. Among the many writers, directors, producers and actors was the new film programmer for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, who also programs shorts and world cinema for Sundance, Dilcia Barrera, and Benjamin-Shalom Rodriguez of 3pas Studios - Eugenio Derbez’ and Ben Odell’s new production company. The talk was varied and interesting and the feeling was positive that this new generation of talent is ready to assume its role in the independent and Hollywood filmmaking community.

In addition to the annual festival, the non-profit works year round to present community screenings in collaboration with other non-profits and civic organizations. The aim is to build an extensive network of partners to launch Ambulante film tours across the U.S.
(For its inaugural edition, the 2014 Ambulante California Documentary Film Festival partnered with over 40 community partners to organize 15 screening events in 13 different public venues across the Metropolitan Los Angeles Area from September 21 to October 4.)

The release of Marvel's "Daredevil" series on Netflix has not only been the most watched TV series launch on the service, it has also earned the honor of being its highest rated.
Business Insider reports that "Daredevil" has become the highest rated quality series available on Netflix with a 4.6/5 star rating. To put that in perspective, that puts it just ahead of the previous three shows tied for first place - "Breaking Bad," "House of Cards," and "Sherlock" which each scored a 4.5.
In fact, the only other program to have scored such a rating on the service is "Alive Inside," a documentary about Alzheimer's.

My look at 2014 continues as I review the best documentaries of 2014. Documentaries can serve a multitude of purposes. You will have your change the world docs that pick a certain cause and attempt to spread the word so people will rise up and do something. You have those that are just about a particular story that is just too incredible to believe. You also have those experimental docs that are all about playing with the perimeters with film and experience. My list covers those categories and much more. It shows documentaries can really be used to do just about anything.

About Viento Callejero
Los Angeles based Urban style Cumbia trio that formed in 2013. The group is composed of three talented musicians, Gloria Estrada on guitar, Federico Zuniga on bass, and Gabriel Villa on drums. Together they bring a fresh approach to urban tropical music stripping it down to feature its rawest elements. With Cumbia making a resurgence, artists have been re-mixing and re-interpreting the Classic Cumbias in dance halls all over the world. Viento Callejero represents the newest incarnation of the movement in Los Angeles, breaking down the rhythmic and melodic pulse of Cumbia Colombiana, Son Montuno, Merengue, Reggae, Dance Hall, Funk, and Rock to create a fresh sound with a new twist that is infectious to the listeners ears, hips, and feet.

The re-launched Hollywood Film Festival (Hff), now under the auspices of Slamdance co-founder Jon Fitzgerald’s philanthropic CineCause, will run from October 16-19.
CineCause acquired Hff earlier this year after Fitzgerald served as executive director in 2013.
According to a press release the goal of the event going forward will be to showcase socially-conscious films and grow into a leading festival “without the help of typical glitz and glamour”, celebrating creative artists, activists and industry leaders who support causes around the world.
“The word Hollywood is synonymous with celebrity and glamour,” said Fitzgerald. “But Hollywood is filled with people who care about global problems and who recognise the power of celebrity, cinema and storytelling and how this power can help create change.”
“Many of Hollywood’s celebrities back important causes and several will participate in our festival this year. Sharon Stone produced My Name Is Water. Emma Thompson executive produced and narrates Sold [pictured], which stars Gillian Anderson and David Arquette...

If this was a typical Sunday morning, I’d report that The One I Love, the latest quirky quasi-comedy exec-produced by the Duplass Brothers, had a solid but not scintillating debut weekend at the specialty box office. But this has not been a typical Sunday morning. When I opened my email from RADiUS-twc, I found not only their theatrical box office results for The One I Love but also the film’s VOD numbers. Wow!
The combined numbers arrived with no fanfare, just honest transparency. RADiUS deserves kudos for being a trailblazer here, and I at least want to make sure this moment is duly noted, and with enthusiasm. The company has given me non-theatrical metrics before, but to give it alongside theatrical is a first, and something unique that I hope quickly becomes common.

Who wouldn’t want to go to Italy in the summer for good food and entertaining conversation with a clever traveling companion? Quite a few people did just that, at least vicariously, via IFC Films‘ The Trip To Italy. The light-hearted sequel to The Trip easily had the weekend’s highest bow among specialty films, grossing $71,577 and averaging a tasty $23,859 in three theaters.
“The Trip to Italy opened with one of the highest per-screen (average)s of the summer, playing to sold-out shows this weekend in New York and Los Angeles,” IFC said in a statement. “The Michael Winterbottom-directed sequel has received wonderful reviews and strong word of mouth.” As with The Trip, which also starred Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon on a food and talk travelogue across U.K. countryside, the road ahead looks wide open for the Italian Trip. The original opened in June 2011 with a $12,984 PTA in 6 theaters,...

Thanks to the increase in access to small scale non-fiction films through the barrage of streaming services viewers now have access to – Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime, Mubi, Vudu, etc – people are watching more documentaries than ever before. You can literally turn on any web ready device of your choosing and be watching any number of top quality docs within a number of seconds. It’s nothing short of incredible. But, with ease of access comes an over saturation of content used to fill in the curatorial gaps. For every Marwencol, Senna, Gimme Shelter or The Act of Killing, there are heaps of ordures cinéma clogging up precious bandwidth. And let’s not forget, cinemas themselves are enjoying a renewed trust in the non-fiction form, exhibiting over 100 documentaries on the silver screen last year and banking over $50 Million at the box office in the process, not including the hundreds of...

Filmmaker Michael Rossato-Bennett’s “Alive Inside” is a documentary won the Sundance Audience Award for Best Documentary earlier this year. While largely focusing on individuals with Alzheimer's and dementia, the doc also touches upon the universal healing power of music while examining the state of healthcare in America. The documentary “contains a tiny revolution within its message, and will likely end up being one of the most important documentaries of the year,” Playlist contributor Nikola Grozdanovic wrote earlier this week and that’s some damn fine praise. Landmark Theaters is supporting the doc’s initiative to increase iPod donations and awareness for Music & Memory, a program designed by Dan Cohen (featured in the film), to enhance quality of life for those suffering with Alzheimer’s, by providing long-term care residents with personal music designed to soothe agitation, uplift spirits and even eliminate the need for some medications. We’ve got an exclusive.

Elderhood. Is that even a thing? You grow from the innocence of childhood through the experiences of adulthood and then...you just get old. Nobody likes to talk about that. Kids dream about growing up so they can do all the adult things they see adults do, and adults wish they can turn back the clock and be kids again. Have you ever heard anyone say, “Man, I cannot wait to get old. I’m going to have the sweetest walker ever.” From Grandpa Simpson to reactions after an 82-year-old Clint Eastwood talked to an empty chair, American culture has always greeted old age as comic relief from a distance. But as one of the most insightful interviewees says in “Alive Inside,” “American Culture is wrong.” Director Michael Rossato-Bennett and the movie's main subject, Dan Cohen, have given a voice to millions of people, hidden and forgotten in those corners...

The film opened on Friday, July 18, 2014 at the Landmark Sunshine Theater in New York City, and on 80 screens throughout the United States.
Producer, Regina Scully, refers to “Alive Inside” as “the little film that could.”
The film demonstrates how music connects, heals, and restores lives.
“Alive Inside” starts out with the founder of Music and Memory, and Social Worker, Dan Cohen, interviewing a 90 year old woman sitting in a wheelchair explaining how she can’t remember anything anymore.
Dementia is a loss of brain function that affects memory, thinking, language, judgment, and behavior. People with dementia may have problems with short-term memory, keeping track of a purse or wallet, paying bills, planning and preparing meals, remembering appointments or wandering out of their neighborhood.
As people age, it is not uncommon for them to loose their independence, loose their dignity, and may even be dealing with loss of loved ones as well.
Over the course of three years, Dan visited many Nursing Homes in the NYC area including, Cobble Hill, Patterson Extended Care Nassau University, Li State Veterans Home, and North Shore University Hospital-lij, and placed headphones connected to nano-sized iPods downloaded with songs from their past, on those diagnosed with diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Multiple Sclerosis and Schizophrenia. As we all know music takes you back in time. When you listen to a song from a certain time in your life, you reflect back on where you were, who you were associating with, and the memories that you shared. When the elders listened to songs that they were familiar with, songs that they had grown up with, and maybe even their favorite song of all time, the results were outstanding.
Their faces lit up, they started dancing and singing along, and even became emotional. It was as if a new person was awakened. The music had meaning, and connected them to memories from the past and who they are as human beings. They were able to leave the daily routine and their illnesses behind and go into a world that they were familiar with on their own terms. By getting to know the person first, and helping people find that song, the nursing home population was able to sing and live again.
“Music and Memory” has grown from 56 nursing homes to 650 locations and has a core belief that as the population ages, they will need to do so healthily.
“It takes me back to my school days.”
“I like Cab Calloway.”
“It reminds me of riding a bike, which is how I used to earn my living.”
“Music and Memory” is a non-profit, and the nano and headphones cost approximately $50.00 each. Old iPods or financial donations are appreciated.

Aging is a problem. Not necessarily the fact of getting old, which does represent its challenges, but more the fact that number of seniors in the general population is going up, while the number of people under the age of 65 is going down. Population by age used to look like a pyramid, with the large base at the bottom made up of young people. But that pyramid now looks more like a column, evenly spread out all the way through. In a short time, about 30-35 years, that pyramid will be inverted, bringing with it a whole host of issues. It would seem then that now is a good time to start thinking about elder care in new ways, and one researcher in Alive Inside thinks he’s tapped into something special to help combat not just old age ailments like dementia and Alzheimer’s, but to enhance quality of life for seniors everywhere.

Practically guaranteed to elicit tears within its first five minutes, Alive Inside — a documentary about activist Dan Cohen's attempts to get nursing homes to use music as a part of their care regimen for those afflicted with dementia, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's diseases — is nonetheless more than just a tearjerker.
Opening with clips of an unwell elderly woman and man becoming rejuvenated, physically and mentally, after listening to the favorite songs of their youth, director Michael Rossato-Bennett's moving film argues music's therapeutic value on slowly deteriorating minds.

The winners of the 14th Annual deadCENTER Film Festival in Oklahoma City were announced on Saturday, with "Hellion" topping as the Grand Jury Narrative Feature category and Michael Rossato-Bennett's "Alive Inside" winning in the Grand Jury Documentary Feature category. "Hellion," directed by Kat Candler and starring Aaron Paul, Juilette Lewis and Josh Wiggins, is a portrait of a family on the brink of dissolution, set against the haunting backdrop of the refineries of southeast Texas. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and has received relatively mixed reviews: The Playlist's Rodrigo Perez, in his review, wrote that though "heartbreaking and moving in its final moments, 'Hellion' just can’t quite convince or coalesce its ideas of struggle, pain and fury in a meaningful or new way." "Alive Inside" similarly premiered at Sundance and is a heartwarming story about how music therapy can ease the suffering.

This year's Sundance Audience Award winner, Michael Rossato-Bennett's feature "Alive Inside," now has a trailer. The film follows social worker Dan Cohen's effort to use music, rather than traditional medication, to combat the deteriorating effects of aging. Watch below to hear him defiantly declare "American culture is wrong: there is life beyond adulthood," accompanied by the voice of neurologist and author Oliver Sacks and scenes of the subjects with loved ones. The film appears to be at once a tear jerker and sentimental uplifter, with excerpts from nostalgic home movies as well as images of the hospitalized elderly reinvigorated by the sounds of music, which seemingly returns to them their lost memories. Indiewire's mixed B- review of "Alive Inside," called the film "often tonally divergent, but still provides an affecting look at a growing therapeutic cause." Distributed by Bond/260, "Alive Inside" will open in New York theaters on July 18th.

For the last five years, we've been posting Indie Trailer Sunday features on FirstShowing, highlighting great indie trailers on the day when no one reads the internet (anymore). I started this feature way back in 2009 as a way of posting some extra trailers over the weekend, on Sunday, when there was no other news, everything was pretty quiet, and there was nothing else worth posting except for an excellent trailer for an independent film most people likely haven't heard of yet. I've carried on that tradition with new posts most Sundays (not always, but I try my best). I still feel like the films never get enough time in the spotlight and are always forgotten by Monday, so here's an extra reminder. Click any poster below for the trailer/teaser. Here's the list of my favorite 22 films from Indie Trailer Sunday, starting with two of the most recent picks: Michael Rossato-Bennett...

"Have you ever had music just hit you in a place where it immediately brought you to tears? Music has that power." This looks wonderful. Winner of the Documentary Audience Award at Sundance 2014 earlier this year, Alive Inside is a doc by Michael Rossato-Bennett about the power that music has to "awaken memories and emotions that have been asleep for years". It focuses on the elderly and how patients with dementia have been able to open their minds again through music, proposing that music has the power to heal by touching our hearts and souls. This does look like a very moving and inspiring documentary, and I definitely do want to see it. Check out the official trailer below for what's being called a "life-changing film". Of the five documentaries nominated for Academy Awards this year, four played Sundance Film Festival 2013. Festival Director John Cooper credited this to the heightened aesthetic excellence in the films at the festival as well as that "the world is accepting non-fiction in really interesting ways." During a discussion of the business and profits of independent films, Cooper stated that "at Sundance, we have to think a little differently. We think of impact. When you look at something like Invisible War is changing policy, when you look at Blackfish -- awareness is actually changing how things are done in our world. It's as important as how much money they (the films) make -- and actually way more important to us."

Well, another Sundance has come and gone. This year's big dramatic winner was "Whiplash," starring Miles Teller as a drumming student, while "Rich Hill" and "Alive Inside: A Story of Music & Memory" took home the documentary prizes. Other buzzed-about films included "Song One," "Laggies," "The Calvary" and "Camp X-Ray." But the real question is: Will any of this year's acclaimed films crossover into the mainstream in the tradition of films like "Reservoir Dogs," "Clerks," "The Blair Witch Project," "Beasts of the Southern Wild," and "Fruitvale Station"? As for the rest of this week's list... January 30, 2014 1. Sundance Film Festival (Last week: No. 2)...

Sundance 2014 is officially in the books, and while there wasn’t any kind of big $10 million distribution deal, films like Boyhood, Whiplash, and Frank had receptions warmer than the bizarre Utah weather over the past 10 days, guaranteeing we’ll be talking about them through the rest of the year.

In 52 Tuesdays, Tilda Cobham-Hervey plays 16-year-old Billie, who struggles with the revelation that her mother (Del Herbert-Jane) plans to change gender. After shooting a bunch of short films and music videos, cinematographer Shachar Langlev debuted his first feature-length film,"Alive Inside: A Story of Music & Memory" at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. The documentary, directed by Michael Rossato-Bennett (also a first timer), looks at a powerful effect music has on Alzheimer's patients. Langlev spoke to Indiewire about her experience working on the film. Which camera and lens did you use? It took us four years to finish the film and our cameras changed and improved as the technology developed. We started with the Panasonic HVX200, with Letus 35mm adaptor, and then the Panasonic AF100. We then switched to the Cannon 7D, and later the Cannon T2I. We finished the film with the superb Cannon C300. We used a ton of Ef Cannon lenses, ranging from the 16-35mm f/2.8, to the 24-70mm f/2.8 and the 75-300mm f/4-...

Rather than showing the progression of youth to old age, Michael Rossato-Bennett’s debut feature "Alive Inside: A Story of Music & Memory" benefits greatly from taking the reverse path -- making the old age of its subjects not a destination, but a starting point for rediscovering the past. By charting the efforts of Dan Cohen and the advances shown in those he's helping to treat, Rossato-Bennett delivers a film that is often tonally divergent, but still provides an affecting look at a growing therapeutic cause. Cohen, founder and executive director of Music & Memory, is the film's entry point into the lives of several Alzheimer’s and dementia victims. He presents a simple hypothesis: Music is a largely untapped resource for assisting patients facing memory loss. Shown in practice at facilities like the Cobble Hill Health Center in Brooklyn, the combination of a pair of headphones and an iPod Shuffle...

Exclusive: Andrew Herwitz has swooped on world sales rights to Michael Rossato-Bennett’s film on the eve of its world premiere in the Us Documentary strand.
Rossato-Bennett produced Alive Inside with Alex McDougald and the film explores the work of an organisation called Music & Memory with people suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Executive producers are The Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation, Projector Media, Eric J Bertrand, Limore Shur and Ben Spivak.
“This film took me on an unexpected journey of discovery,” said Herwitz. “The film is extraordinarily powerful and is an issue of universal significance. “Whereas 15 years ago, most of my contemporaries were pondering kindergarten options for their toddlers, now most are discussing their parents’ health, wellbeing and care.
“This film provides hope for the literally millions of families around the world who have a loved one who suffers from any kind of senile dementia. It is totally uplifting and impossible to watch without crying and laughing...
