- A fearless woman fights social injustice; creating a sanctuary for abused women and battling a crooked politician.
- Rajjo has created an ashram (sanctuary) for girls and women. The youngest students are taught to read. The adults are given a chance for employment--grinding spices, weaving beautiful pink saris, and--when necessary--picking up weapons to fight social injustice. Rajjo and her rose-hued gang members are asked to back Sumitra Bagrecha, a politician whose grand promises inspire hope in Rajjo. But when Sumitra reveals her callous, greedy nature, the Gulaab Gang become her worst enemy.—L. Hamre
- Hardened by the atrocities of her stepmother and social injustice at a very young age, Rajjo (Madhuri Dixit) opens up a pink ashram named Gulaab Gang, an all-women gang which focuses on fighting social injustice against women, poverty, and issues like rape, dowry, and education for girls. Whenever an issue cannot be resolved by talking it out, Rajjo and her gang go out with their axes, sickles and batons to beat the men and bring them to their senses. Rajjo's real struggle begins when a corrupt, manipulative, and greedy female politician, Sumitra Devi (Juhi Chawla) comes into the picture. Sumitra has no qualms about using people, including Rajjo and her gang, to fulfill her political aspirations. Rajjo has never faced an enemy as venomous and two-faced as Sumitra. Will Rajjo be able to combat Sumitra, or will Sumitra succeed in fulfilling her political ambitions by crushing Rajjo and her gang?
- The Gulaab Gang members are activists and vigilantes in Bundelkhand Uttar and Madhya Pradesh. They wear pink Sarees and take up issues like domestic violence, the dowry system, sexual assault, electricity matters, and education. Their fierce leader, Rajjo (Madhuri Dixit), locks horns with a conniving and shrewd politician, Sumitra Bagrecha (Juhi Chawla), who uses people for her local benefit. Rajjo wanted to study as a child, but her mother was against it. She beat and tortured Rajjo to turn her away from education, but Rajjo withstood every torture with courage.
Rajjo runs a Gulaab Gang in the village of Madhopur. The gang supports a sanctuary, where she teaches little girls their alphabet, and grown-up girls how to wield a Lathi. Her gang is made up of women who wear bright pink. Rajjo's closest friends in the gang are a tomboy Mahi (Divya Jagdale), a woman abandoned by her husband Kajri (Tannishtha Chatterjee), and a kohl-eyed woman Sandhya (Priyanka Bose). These ladies go about standing up for the meek and the downtrodden, and clash against villainous husbands, cops and politicians.
The local Collector has demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 to provide electricity connection to a local village. His goon brutally beats up a villager who had complained to the police against the collector. The gang encircles the Collector's office and cut off all exists and water supply to the office till electricity is connected to the village. The gang also confronts Kajri's abusive husband Sarju (Ankit Anil Sharma) who demands Rs 50,000 to take Kajri back. Majhi breaks Sarju's elbow when he tries to be violent.
Rajjo decides to take part in the local elections against a manipulative and conniving politician, Sumitra Devi (Juhi Chawla). Sumitra is the head of the local dominant political party and is the CM of the state.
The two ladies first collide when a local MLA's son sexually assaults a girl from Rajjo's village while the MLA Pawan was in the village requesting Rajjo's support during the local election. Rajjo had agreed to support Pawan as he promised to open a school for girls in the village. Post the sexual assault, the local MLA threatens the father and Rajjo not to complain to Sumitra, as he is trying to get his son married to Sumitra's daughter. Rajjo takes her complaint to Sumitra, but she insults Rajjo by offering a partly compensation of Rs 50,000. Rajjo responds by abducting Pawan's son & cutting off his ears and penis. Sumitra sees firsthand that Rajjo is a bigger people leader in the area as compared to Pawan or even herself.
Next Rajjo challenges Pawan's income sources by stealing back the PDS grain that Pawan's goons stole from government shops. Pawan complains to Sumitra, but Sumitra responds by insulting Pawan and extending her local MLA support to Rajjo. Sumitra reckons that if she assimilates Rajjo in her political structure, her support base will only increase, and she will benefit politically from this association. Sumitra tells Rajjo that she will fulfill all the aspirations of her people, if Rajjo can fulfill Sumitra's aspirations. But Rajjo rejects Sumitra's offer and decides to contest elections on her own. Rajjo runs a grass roots campaign, where as Sumitra is campaigning on the basis on her marketing power and the power of cash.
Sumitra does her best to make sure Rajjo is incapacitated during election campaigns by having most of her gang members killed by the henchmen. Rajjo holds her forces back as she believes that now she is fighting a much bigger battle. Mahi is especially disillusioned with Rajjo's approach and calls her a sellout. Mahi is poisoned and killed by her lover Anu (Varoon Varma), who sells himself out to Sumitra. ' Sumitra sends a squad after Rajjo when she goes to the city to ask for donations. But Rajjo sees them coming and fights them off.
And then Sumitra wins the election by stuffing the ballot boxes with her proxy votes and booth capturing. Towards the end, Rajjo decides to take revenge against Sumitra, when Sumitra threatens to derail Rajjo's lifelong mission of opening a girl school in her village. An international NGO offers Rajjo Rs 10 Lakhs to construct a proper school in the village. Sumitra tells Rajjo that she will only sanction land for the school and guarantee the safety of the children in the mid-day meal program, if the school is named after her.
During Holi celebrations, Sumitra conspires to finish off the Gulaab Gang. Rajjo gets intelligence about Sumitra's plans and prepares her own defenses. Sumitra's loyalists are killed in a brutal battle with the Gulaab gang. Sumitra picks up the machine gun herself. Rajjo retaliates by chopping off Sumitra Devi's hand as the latter tries to shoot the gang with a machine gun.
At the end, Sumitra is arrested and is sentenced to life in prison and Rajjo is also arrested for her violent retribution. However, Rajjo eventually realizes her dream of establishing a school for unprivileged girls.
