AnalysisFrom north Indian characters celebrating Holi to directors adding Holi festivities in songs for the visual appeal, Tamil film songs have included the festival of colours over the last few decades, writes the author.Rajinikanth in a still from Pa Ranjith's KaalaThe iconic ‘Rang barse bheege chunarwali rang barse’ song from the Amitabh Bachchan starrer Silsila is usually on top of any playlist during Holi celebrations. Then there’s the ‘Holi ke din’ song from Sholay, which also rings loud on “Holi-Day”. And one cannot forget Gabbar Singh’s legendary “Holi kab hai?” line from the same film. Holi has been an integral part of Bollywood pop culture and vice versa. After a couple of years of muted celebrations due to Covid-19, Holi is back with verve and vengeance this year. In the south of India though, Holi is not a big festival. It is not a holiday even.

KollywoodNayanthara is among the handful of reigning women stars in south Indian film industries, and Kollywood in particular, who enjoy the same level of idolatry as high-grossing male stars.Saradha UAmazon Prime VIdeoA striking scene from Netrikann (2021) that depicts the film’s lead Nayanthara delivering a strong punchline against victim-shaming and sexism was perhaps the first of its kind in Tamil cinema. “Why do you care whether she is opting for an abortion, dressed ‘inappropriately’, if she is nude, or whether she is a good or bad person? Regardless of what she does, it’s her life. Just because you think she is wrong, do you get to do whatever you want?” questions Nayanthara, who is fondly known as Lady Superstar. In a light-hearted sequence from Soodhu Kavvum (2013), protagonist Pagalavan (Bobby Simha), shown as an ardent fan of actor Nayanthara, gets in trouble for installing a statue for her. What...

The New York Film Festival unveiled the main slate for its 58th edition on Thursday.
This year’s selections showcases titles from 19 different countries and spotlights both emerging and veteran talent. A number of documentaries will debut at the festival, including Gianfranco Rosi’s “Notturno,” an immersive look at war-torn countries Iraq, Kurdistan, Syria and Lebanon; Frederick Wiseman’s “City Hall,” exploring the scenes of Boston’s local government; and Garrett Bradley’s “Time,” an intimate portrait of mass incarceration in America.
The festival is lacking participation from many major studios, such as Warner Bros. and Netflix, partly due to the fact that coronavirus has upended awards season. Last year’s edition included screenings of such major Oscar contenders as “Marriage Story” and “The Irishman,” and nothing on this year’s slate seems to be equally buzzy.

After unveiling a few of the works that would be at the fest, the Toronto International Film Festival has today releases their full lineup for 2020. Obviously, this comes in the wake of Covid-19 and the coronavirus pandemic changing what film festivals will be like this year. Toronto had already detailed that their festival will be a hybrid of limited in person screenings and virtual ones, but now we have a better idea of what will be playing. At first glance, the fest does seem to have less in the way of overt Oscar bait than usual, but that might be deceiving. After all, the Academy Awards will be picking through a different crop than planned, to begin with, so perhaps TIFF will still debut some major players? Joining the previously announced flicks like Francis Lee’s Ammonite (as well as Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland), Toronto has added movies like Regina King...

Arguably, the 72nd edition of Cannes was one of the most historic editions in history for Asian cinema. After winning the Palme d’Or, Parasite and Bong Joon-ho quickly became a household names around the world. Even though we won’t quite get the drama of an in-person film festival this year (thanks to Covid-19), the 73rd edition of Cannes still released its full roster of would-be premieres. We’ve listed here the Asian films that did make 2020’s Official Selection.
Some overview: Asian films make up around 24% of the 55 films selected, most of which hail from East and Central Asia. Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch,” Pete Docter’s “Soul” and two films from Steve McQueen, “Lovers Rock” and “Mangrove” (both from his anthology series “Small Axe”), are among the films that would have gone to this year’s Cannes Film Festival if it had taken place, Cannes organizers announced at a press conference in Paris on Wednesday.
While the prestigious festival itself will not happen, those films and 52 others in the 2020 Official Selection will bear the Cannes 2020 label, a way the festival plans to highlight films that would have been chosen to screen in Cannes this year and have committed to trying for theatrical releases by the end of the year.
Other filmmakers who will be represented on the virtual Croisette include Thomas Vinterberg (“Another Round”), Francois Ozon (“Summer of ’85”), Naomi Kawase (“True Mothers”) Im Sang-soo (“Heaven”) and Viggo Mortensen, whose Sundance premiere “Falling” is also on the Cannes list.

Film: "Arrambam"; Cast: Ajith Kumar, Nayanthara, Arya, Rana Daggubati, Tapsee Pannu, Mahesh Manjrekar, Atul Kulkarni, Suman Ranganathan and Kishore; Director: Vishnuvardhan; Rating: ** - a one-man aspirational film.
Remember how the "Die Hard" series in the fourth and fifth instalment was all about Bruce Willis performing age-defying stunts and entertaining fans of the franchise; likewise Tamil film "Arrambam" is all about Ajith Kumar.
Glorifying actors, already being worshipped as gods, Tamil cinema continues to make films that are aspirational but.

The Selfish Giant (15)
(Clio Barnard, 2013, UK) Conner Chapman, Shaun Thomas, Sean Gilder. 91 mins
In the tradition of Kes, or Fish Tank, this offers a child's-eye view of poverty that's too strong for real-life kids of the same age. Despite the fairytale origins, miracles are in short supply in this Bradford suburb, where two drop-out mates scavenge for opportunities. But the balance between harsh realism and mythical lyricism is beautifully struck, and the two leads really are miraculous.
Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa (15)
(Jeff Tremaine, 2013, Us) Johnny Knoxville, Jackson Nicoll. 92 mins
Old-suited Knoxville and his "grandson" take to the road for Borat-style pranks.

Chennai, Aug 7: Director Vishnuvardhan, who has teamed up with Ajith Kumar for the second time in upcoming Tamil thriller "Arrambam", says the actor insisted on doing his own stunts irrespective of the risk-factor involved.
"He is so committed that he didn't let me appoint a body-double for him in the action scenes. He said he could do it on his own even after he injured his leg in one of the car chase sequences. He insists on doing the most risky stunts on his own," Vishnuvardhan told Ians.
This is not the first time that Ajith has performed his own stunts. In "Billa 2", he performed dare-devilry in a flying helicopter.
