The original Max series “Full Circle” debuts on July 13. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the new drama investigates a kidnapping gone wrong in New York, revealing the secrets and lies of multiple characters. Or as the trailer warns: “Everything is connected.” The six-episode limited series stars Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, and Dennis Quaid.
Watch the “Full Circle” trailer:
The four-part documentary “Last Call: When A Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York” is set in the early 1990s as the AIDS crisis worsens. The media’s distorted coverage of the gay victims, coupled with the homophobic biases of the criminal justice system, undermine the investigation. The docuseries — which premieres on Max on July 9 — illustrates how the LGBTQ+ community fought to solve the murders and demand attention for those murdered.

Arranged marriage is a tried-and-true trope in Bollywood romcoms, which typically champion love and social progress over tradition, even if they’ve hardly moved the needle for decades despite the genre’s immense popularity. Though set in London and revolving around arranged marriage in the South Asian diaspora, it’s easy to make assumptions about Toronto Film Festival premiere “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” based on genre conventions and cliché.
But this is most definitely not what Bollywood romcom enthusiasts might expect. For starters, the story concerns overseas Pakistanis and not Indians. The film also doesn’t outright frame arranged marriage as something outdated and stifling. If anything, it encourages viewers to not rush to judgment.
Moreover, its protagonist is actually a white woman. Zoe (Lily James), is a socially conscious documentary filmmaker from an ethnically diverse part of London. Her mother, Cath (Emma Thompson), while fully embracing the multiculturalism around her,...

If you’ve seen the British satire “Toast of London,” chances are that voiceover engineer Clem Fandango’s name still rings in your ears. Now Shazad Latif, the man behind Fandango, Ash Tyler on “Star Trek: Discovery” and Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde on “Penny Dreadful,” has nabbed his first romantic lead in “What’s Love Got to Do With It?”
The Shekhar Kapur-helmed acquisition title, which has a Gala world premiere Sept. 10 in Toronto, “has slightly more depth than a normal rom-com because it tackles arranged marriage,” Latif said. Lily James plays his character’s childhood friend, and complications ensue when she decides to make a documentary about the nuptials.
“Lily is one of my closest friends,” Latif said. “She’s like a sister to me.” They met when she did a play with his old roommate, and co-starred in the 2021 BBC miniseries “The Pursuit of Love.” “I read [“What’s Love”] a while back,...

Exclusive: Hayley Mills, still fondly remembered for Disney classics Pollyanna and The Parent Trap, is checking into The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel to take it on the road in the UK and then to London’s West End.
Strictly speaking, it’s a play based on the book (Deborah Moggach’s These Foolish Things) that spawned successful movie The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in 2011 and it’s 2015 sequel The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Both pictures, starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Bill Nighy, did immensely well at the box office.
The screenplays for the films, directed by John Madden, were written by Ol Parker. However for the stage, Moggach has adapted her own tome about seven British retirees who depart the Home Counties of England to see out the sunset of their years at what they’re led to believe is a luxurious hotel in Bangalore, India.

There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.
Hulu’s major original releases in May come in the middle of the month. Candy premieres on May 9 and stars Jessica Biel as your friendly neighborhood axe murderer. If that sounds a bit outlandish, bear in mind that this limited series is based on the real life story of Candy Montgomery and her victim, the tragically named Betty Gore. On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.

Ooo, so what’s this “new era” coming for the denizens of Downton Abbey, 1920s-Yorkshire’s nicest feudal hangover? I never truly thought it would be the guillotines my reading of the prequel had inspired in my imagination, though a girl’s gotta dream. But it would not be anachronistic to hope for the Great Depression hitting the Earl of Grantham’s interests hard. Or perhaps soak-the-rich taxation has finally come for Downton, forcing them to open the house to *gasp* paying visitors?
Alas, that last is the closest to comeuppance that will descend upon the sprawling Crawley family and their impossibly happy-with-their-station servants. In the mildest sort of meta one could hope for from this franchise, the moving pictures have come to Downton Abbey! Film director Jack Barber and stars Guy Dexter and Myrna Dalgleish are making a glamorous romantic drama and they need a grand house for the shoot.

Exclusive: Deadline has the first pair of exclusive tracks from Thomas Newman’s score for Operation Mincemeat, which is set for digital release via Lakeshore Records tomorrow, as Warner Bros. releases the film in the UK and Ireland.
Operation Mincemeat tells the extraordinary story of two intelligence officers that changed the course of World War II, saving tens of thousands of lives and breaking Hitler’s deadly grip on Europe by recruiting the skills of the most unlikely of secret agents: a dead man.
For the drama, Newman looked to craft a striking orchestral score, which evoked intensely dramatic action, while befitting more nuanced moments. The film was directed by John Madden, with whom Newman had previously collaborated on titles including The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and The Debt. “John Madden is the perfect collaborator. Whip-smart, full of humor and a savvy listener,” says the composer.

The story picks up in 1927, a few years after the series’ end,...

‘Palm Beach.’
Rachel Ward’s Palm Beach, a comedy-drama about a group of lifelong friends reuniting to celebrate a special birthday, will open the Sydney Film Festival at the State Theatre on Wednesday June 5.
Scripted by Ward and Joanna Murray-Smith, the film stars Bryan Brown, Sam Neill, Greta Scacchi, Richard E Grant, Jacqueline McKenzie, Claire van der Boom, Aaron Jeffrey, Heather Mitchell, Matilda Brown and new faces Frances Berry and Charlie Vickers.
The good times roll at a Palm Beach house with loads of laughter, lavish meals, wine and music until tensions mount and new and old resentments surface over three days. Brown, Neill and Grant play former members of a one hit wonder band called Pacific Sideburns.
The inspiration stemmed from a Christmas in Wales which Brown and his wife Rachel spent with three other couples five years ago. It was a funny and warm occasion but when they...

Richard Gere has an incredible IMDb filmography, filled with award-winning roles. However, outside of some festival films, the actor hasn’t really had a major part in a big film since 2015’s “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” and let’s be real, that’s not something to rave about. That being said, Gere is taking his talents to the small screen, to star in the upcoming BBC drama series “MotherFatherSon.”

The series marks the actors first foray into TV since the mid-’70s when he had a one-off role in “Kojack.” But this time, Gere is front and center in “MotherFatherSon,” playing a media mogul that goes to the UK to visit his estranged wife and his son.

And the critical darling of the summer is … “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again”? This sequel comes 10 years after the original “Mamma Mia!” film, which itself was adapted from the 1999 jukebox musical that brought the songs of Abba to the Broadway stage. No, it’s not a movie we’re likely to be talking about in the year-end awards conversation — except perhaps the Golden Globes, which adore musicals. But it does seem to have caught critics off-guard by actually improving on the original.
The 2008 “Mamma Mia!” was a huge hit, grossing $144 million domestically and a whopping $609 million worldwide against a mere $52 million budget. And it earned Golden Globe noms for Best Film Comedy/Musical and Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress (Meryl Streep). But it didn’t win over critics: it scored 51 on MetaCritic and had a rotten Tomatometer score of 54%.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Charming based-on-fact British costume dramedy gently snarks about power and propriety but cuts a lot deeper when it comes to bigotry and bootlicking. I’m “biast” (pro): love Judi Dench, mostly love Stephen Frears’s films
I’m “biast” (con): we’re still telling stories about this dead queen?
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
The ribbing writes itself: Hey, they finally made the sequel to 1997’s Mrs. Brown! You know, the movie in which Judi Dench as Queen Victoria develops a close platonic friendship — or maybe even a romance — with royal groundskeeper John Brown in the early years of her widowhood, in the 1860s. It was a scandal! And now here’s Victoria & Abdul, which opens 20 years later and stars Judi Dench (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel...

Quietly, Richard Gere is consistently making rather good movies, telling interesting stories and taking on nuanced, intriguing roles. From The Benefactor to Arbitrage (let’s just forget The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for now) – he’s tackling intimate character studies, and his latest, Joseph Cedar’s Norman, is no different.
Gere plays the eponymous protagonist, a professional chancer and over-enthused fixer – only problem is, nobody will actually let him get close enough to fix anything. Until he meets Eshel (Lior Ashkenazi), an Israeli politician spending some time in New York, touched by Norman’s offer to buy him a pair of shoes. Three years pass, and Eshel is now an influential world leader, as the Prime Minister of his native country, and when he returns to the States to meet the President, Norman shows up at a function – and they remember each other well. The beloved Bill Nighy is set to wow again after his latest stint in Their Finest as he takes the lead in 1880’s London on the search for a mythological beast who is believed to be a serial killer in the forthcoming The Limehouse Golem. London, 1940. If it were only about the numbers, the top specialized movies of 2016 would be a simple story: “Hell Or High Water” earned the most at $27 million, but “La La Land” will wind up making a magnitude more. Both are released by Lionsgate. The end.
However, if 2016 taught us anything it’s that the landscape for specialized releases is incredibly complex. Is Lionsgate a specialty distributor or minimajor? Should we only look at those films that were independently made? (Then we can fight over what that means.) Is it only for films that opened in limited release, then expanded slowly? Should we only consider theatrical releases? Do all documentaries qualify? What about subtitled films?
The top-grossing documentary was “Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party,” released by the faith-and-family label Quality Flix; it took in $13 million, more than triple Michael Moore’s “Where to Invade Next.” The short...

The year 2016 is going to be in history as the most interesting and contentious year for politics.
Miss Sloane has the perfect timing for release as the world starts to unwind from this turbulent year.
In this superb performance by Jessica Chastain, she plays a lobbyist who uses her intellect and wits to outmaneuver her political foes in the Capitol. This political thriller pits her against the gun lobby and her old firm as she assists an organization to push through new legislation.
The film also stars Alison Pill, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, John Lithgow, Michael Stuhlbarg and Mark Strong.
Lrm had a sit-down interview early last month with director John Madden for this film. We discussed politics, the intriguing storyline with twists and turns, Chastain and more politics.
Miss Sloane opens nationwide this Friday in theaters.

The companies are developing four European-based films starting with Ol Parker’s take on the story of London concert promoter and con artist Roy Tempest.
The slate includes Fallen Idol, a remake of the 1948 Carol Reed / Graham Greene crime noir, and airship disaster story Hindenburg.
The three are being developed in association with long-term Parkes+MacDonald Productions partner ImageNation Abu Dhabi. Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald will produce each title, with Parkes+MacDonald president of production Evan Hayes serving as executive producer.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel writer Parker (pictured) is adapting Great Pretender from Tempest’s autobiography. Intellectual Property Group’s Joel Gotler is on board as an executive producer.
The story takes place in the early 1960s when Tempest faked a UK tour of America’s biggest soul acts like The Temptations to The Ronettes using ordinary people masquerading as the singers.

MaryAnn’s quick take…
Relentlessly dull. A tour of a strange world and “characters” little more than their “peculiar” abilities isn’t enough to whip up fantastical excitement. I’m “biast” (pro): I was a peculiar child, and I remain a peculiar adult; love the cast
I’m “biast” (con): mostly disappointed by Tim Burton lately
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
So it’s Harry Potter Lite. Very lite. No, wait: It’s X-Men Babies. In the land of Groundhog Day, or maybe in a Doctor Who-ish timey-wimey chronic hysteresis. Where they’re haunted by Slenderman. Later, there is a Bill & Ted reference. Remember the days when Tim Burton made movies that took your breath away with their originality? Where has that Tim Burton gone?
Okay, so lots of things are derivative. That’s not necessarily a dealbreaker.

This past April, Jessica Chastain co-starred in the fantasy action adventure film “The Huntsmen: Winter’s War” and made a guest appearance on the HBO animated series “Animals,” but by the end of the year, she will take center stage in the new political thriller “Miss Sloane.” The film follows Sloane (Chastain), a political lobbyist on the brink of burnout who tries to push gun control measures in America. Its supporting cast features a murderer’s row of character actors: Mark Strong (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“Beyond The Lights”), Michael Stuhlbarg (“A Serious Man”), Alison Pill (“Snowpiercer”), Jake Lacy (“Carol”), John Lithgow (“Interstellar”), and Sam Waterston (“Law & Order”).

The actor gives a strong performance as a desperate social climber in this fractured drama that works best as a flawed character study
Quietly and usually without much of an audience, Richard Gere is having a bit of a moment. Unlike his similarly aged peers Liam Neeson and Bruce Willis, he’s rejected the senior stuntman route and instead made the decision to embrace his older self, taking on roles that are reliant on his age, often uncomfortably so. In Time Out of Mind, he played a homeless man struggling to reconnect with his estranged daughter, in The Benefactor he was an unhinged philanthropist making amends for his tortured past and, well, he even joined the cast of The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Critics be damned, but Warner Bros.’ latest D.C. Comics offering, “Suicide Squad,” will again prevail at the box office this weekend, against three new wide releases: “Sausage Party” (Sony), “Pete’s Dragon” (Buena Vista) and “Florence Foster Jenkins” (Paramount). However, it’s unclear whether “Sausage” or “Dragon” will come in second place.
Also up for debate is how much, if any, improvement we’ll see from the same weekend in 2015, when “Straight Outta Compton” dominated a Top Ten that totaled $130 million. Assuming “Suicide” doesn’t replicate the 69% second weekend collapse of “Batman v Superman” (that would place it around $40 million), and the new openings do expected business, $140 million or more is likely.
While holding the top spot for two weekends is always a nice bragging right, the real fate of “Suicide” lies in determining the profit it can eke out against a production and marketing budget of more than $300 million.

New Original Programming:
“Meet the Donors” (8/1)
“Dios, Inc.” - Season 1 Finale (8/5)
“Hitchcock/Truffaut” (8/8)
“Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the La Rams” (8/10)
“El Negocio” - Season 3 Premiere (8/12)
IndieWire Pick: “The Night Of” (Series Finale) (8/28)
HBO’s well-received limited series “The Night Of” will wrap up its eight-part whodunnit in late August. Steve Zaillian’s gritty drama, which examines a man’s fate after he wakes up charged with the murder of a relative stranger, debuted to rave reviews from critics and audiences. IndieWire’s Ben Travers writes, “By actively engaging on personal and political levels, Zaillian sucks the viewer into a nightmare scenario wholly dependent on two verdicts: first, whether or not Naz is found guilty, but also if he really did it.” Here’s hoping the series can maintain its slow burn thrills all the way to the end.

Pottermore.com has released the first images from the Harry Potter update Harry Potter And The Cursed Child with Jamie Parker as Harry, Poppy Miller as his wife, Ginny, and Sam Clemmett as Harry’s troubled son Albus.
The previews of both Parts 1 and 2 of the West End play written by Jack Thorne are coming next week, but these portraits give a right peek at the characters, and their resemblance to the actors who played them in the Harry Potter film series is uncanny. J.K. Rowling herself said about Parker: “He simply is Harry now. There’s a kind of relief in watching him, he gets it so right.” High praise from the person who knows both Harry and his universe better than anyone!

Celia Imrie (The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) has been cast opposite Pamela Adlon on FX's comedy series Better Things. From Louis C.K. and his longtime friend and collaborator Adlon, Better Things is a semi-autobiographical vehicle for Adlon similar to the way Louie is for C.K. It centers on Sam (Adlon), a working actor with no filter trying to earn a living, navigate her daughters' lives, have fun with a friend or two and also — just maybe — squeeze in some private…...
