In an extremely unusual move for major Hollywood studios, it was decided by Cinergi Pictures and The Walt Disney Company to scrap the production altogether after approximately two years of pre-production and 20 days of filming. None of the filmed footage surfaced since then, only amateur behind-the-scenes shots by locals.
Dennis Dugan was brought in as a replacement director for Lee Grant on a red eye flight, as a personal favor to Bruce Willis with whom they worked on Moonlighting (1985). However, he was only on set for a total of one day, before the production was halted and eventually scrapped.
Bruce Willis was believed to be directly responsible for production's dissolution: as a star and a producer he regularly clashed with cast and crew which lead to firing of producer Joseph Feury, director Lee Grant (Feury's wife), cinematographer William A. Fraker and costume designer Carol Oditz. Previously hair stylist Bunny Parker also left to work on The Horse Whisperer (1998).
In order to compensate for film's dissolution Bruce Willis took a three-picture contract with The Walt Disney Company. The three resulting pictures were Armageddon (1998), The Sixth Sense (1999) and The Kid (2000).
