We’ve done it again – not made it into the shortlist of Best Foreign Film For the Oscars. Year after year, we keep missing out on getting anywhere close to actually winning it. The film’s team is feeling far from defeated. Director Amit Masurkar and actors Anjali Patil and Pankaj Tripathi were happy that their film got a chance to travel so much and touch the hearts of viewers across the world.

Few things are more sublime than finding back-to-back features that hit some specific thematic sweet spot. Drive-in theaters may not be the popular viewing spot they once were, but with the overwhelming accessibility we now have, one can program their own personal double bill. Today, we’ve run through the gamut of 2017 films to select the finest pairings and tried to sway from the most obvious (i.e. a combination of Dunkirk, Darkest Hour and The Finest Hour). Check out list the below, and we’d love to hear your own picks, which can be left in the comments.

Year after year, the Golden Globes are always filled with surprises — more than most award shows, even. On the TV side, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s preference for new series and small member body makes for nominations some call exciting, others mind-boggling. This year was a bit more predictable — by Golden Globes standards — but still packed its fair share of twists and turns. From recent winners getting boxed out (Tracee Ellis Ross, “Blackish”) to new faces working their way in (Katherine Langford, “13 Reasons Why”), there’s quite a lot to dig into — so let’s get started on the snubs and surprises:

Cahiers du cinéma’s Top 10 Films of 2017 Includes ‘Twin Peaks: The Return,’ ‘Split,’ and ‘Good Time’
Established in the 1950s by André Bazin, Joseph-Marie Lo Duca, and Jacques Doniol-Valcroze, France’s Cahiers du cinéma has long been a bastion for quality film criticism. Year after year their rundown of the top films usually ignites a response, and we doubt 2017 will be any different — mostly notably when it comes to their top “film,” and perhaps a few other inclusions.
They’ve released their latest list, which includes a few films that won’t get a U.S. release until 2018 (Jeannette, The Day After, Lover for a Day). Also among the selections are some of this year’s finest films, Get Out and Good Time, as well as David Lynch’s 18-hour Twin Peaks: The Return, which also made Sight & Sound’s poll. Since they got a release in France this year, Certain Women, Jackie, and Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk also made the cut.

One his first day he met with Ranbir Kapoor at the Mumbai Soccer Challenge and announced something very special. Four budding young footballers from Mumbai are set to head to London to train with Queens Park Rangers.
Sadiq was attending the ninth annual finals day of the Mumbai Soccer Challenge and watched a challenge match to win the inaugural Mayor of London Cup. He confirmed that, for the first time in the scheme’s nine-year history, two girls as well as two boys will be heading to London.

The tell-all “autobiography” Ecstasy and Me: My Life As A Woman was exactly what Hedy Lamarr’s agent wanted to make quick money. But it wasn’t her life. Whether her ghostwriter’s words were true or not, the story dealt with everything she hoped wouldn’t define her legacy. Sadly she never had the chance to set the record straight with a follow-up of her own creation despite ambitions for one. The former Hollywood starlet became a recluse, barely seen in public and hardly in a position to be listened to or believed. And yet there were rumors — clear-cut facts actually — that Lamarr did much more than act, dance, and sell war bonds. The truth had her being the inventor of a patent with an estimated market value of $30 billion. Hedy Lamarr was a trendsetting genius and no one knew.

Many predicted that the comic book movie genre is coming to an end soon, yet we probably haven’t even begun to see the best of them. Year after year tops the previous with better story lines, better effects, better acting, better costumes, better everything. That includes better directing too. The success of these superhero films relies greatly on the main seat in the house, the director’s seat. There are plenty of fish in that sea, but only a handful few should even try. What goes into styling Beyoncé for the Met Gala? Apparently, it can all take less than 24 hours. The pregnant singer will probably be a no-show this year, but as the first Monday in May rapidly approaches, we'd be remiss not to acknowledge the most epic moments from the biggest night in fashion's past. Bey, of course, owns many of them—remember her pale-pink latex ensemble from 2016? Then there was that high ponytail and naked dress combo for the China: Through the Looking Glass theme. Year after year, she impresses (in mostly Givenchy). And year after year, you'll see stylist Ty Hunter trailing behind her, fluffing and fixing her train on the famously steep, red steps of the Metropolitan Museum of...

The nominations for the 2017 Golden Globes were announced Monday morning, and with it came the standard realization of all the stars, shows and movies that were snubbed. While the film section had its fair share of snubs—Taraji P. Henson, Tom Hanks and Finding Dory—to name a few, it appeared that there were far more snubs in TV. Upon realizing that Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, the men of This Is Us and Tatiana Maslany nabbed zero nominations, fans' hearts immediately broke. But why is it that so many TV shows didn't get nominations? Year after year TV shows and actors get snubbed, but there's more to it than meets the eye. For starters, one obvious reason is that there are far more...

This new Netflix doc uses gaudy special effects to convey the impact of Lotje Sodderland’s stroke, but her story would have been engaging enough on its own
Certain subjects are hard to keep down in the world of documentary. Year after year they resurface, regardless of whether the world really needs another film about the porn industry, mixed martial arts or Kurt Cobain. Most persistent of all is the Inspirational Recovery Story, in which we follow a buoyant character as they rebuild their life in the wake of a tragic incident, often with the aid of music or some kind of alternative therapy. Premiering yesterday as a highly promoted Netflix Original, My Beautiful Broken Brain is the latest entry in that familiar canon, and its overall structure closely follows the formula established by its predecessors, even as its best moments push beyond the genre’s conventions.

1.) Saala Khadoos
Anyone on social media that follows Madhavan would be witness to the actor and his transformation. The actor has posted many pictures of his life but none received quite the surprise response as pictures of him as he was preparing for this film. Someone regarded as capable but not quite a mainstream actor, Madhavan films have always met with intrigue when he is the protagonist. Saala Khadoos brings out the angry young man that Madhavan has rarely shown in Hindi cinema. After back-to-back wins with Tanu Weds Manu,...

The Last Days of Disco, Metropolitan, and Barcelona were amongst the best of 90s independent cinema, if one had the stomach for incessant dissections of ego, academia, and capitalism. With more talking than action, director/writer Whit Stillman brought us complex comedies of manners that had to be intently listened to in order to distill satisfaction. Selfish and...

I’m not sure what your holiday traditions are, but in my family, it’s not Christmas until you’ve watched at least one movie that makes you realize your family is not that bad, because it could always be worse. I joking, of course, but let’s say “hypothetically” that I’m not.
For me, ever since I first saw National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation at an age probably too early to be watching the film, I’ve had a special place in my heart for Clark Griswold. A man with a good heart and no sense to navigate in the world. Year after year, I watch that film like a big eyed, innocent child all over again, and when Clark finally loses his shit in front of everyone, chugging back the adult egg nog, inside I’m saying “Amen, brother!”
What the Hell am I babbling on about,...

Established in the 1950’s by André Bazin, Joseph-Marie Lo Duca, and Jacques Doniol-Valcroze, France’s Cahiers du cinéma has long been a bastion for quality film criticism. Year after year their rundown of the top films usually ignites a response, and we doubt 2015 will be any different.
They’ve now released their list for this year, which includes a few films that won’t get a U.S. release until next year (the chart-topping Mia Madre, Cemetery of Splendour, In the Shadow of Women, and Journey to the Shore). Also among the list is Lisandro Alonso‘s stellar Jauja, Miguel Gomes‘ epic Arabian Nights, and George Miller‘s blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road.
Following Sight & Sound’s top 20 of 2015, check out the full list below (thanks to Jordan Cronk), and see reviews where available.

Most years, awards watchers can take it for granted that however confused the awards landscape may appear in late August, things will be much clearer by mid September. Year after year, the one-two-three punch of the Venice International Film Festival, the Telluride Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival introduce the majority of the films that will end up competing for the Academy Awards and other film honors. Last year’s winner, “Birdman,” premiered in Venice and also played Telluride; it was the first winner in a decade not to appear in Toronto, but it too did the festival dance.

Is it a really a wonder that sequels get such a bad rap these days when there are so many terrible ones? Year after year (and this has been going on for a while now), Hollywood dedicates an insanely large portion of its efforts to rendering follow-ups to motion pictures that really don’t need to exist. Why? Because it’s a whole lot easier to repackage something that audiences already like, than to try something – you know – original.
And film-goers complain, of course, because complaining and moaning and throwing insults around is what film-goers do best, even though film-goers are the ones to blame. Ye: they’re the ones that go back, after all; the ones who – despite their reservations and morals and beliefs that sequels are fundamentally wrong – pay to see the follow-ups because… well, just in case. You have to see for yourself, after all.

One of the most frequently asked questions about the Grammys is, “What is the difference between Record of the Year and Song of the Year?” Year after year, the question continues to pop up, and for good reason. Looking over the nominees in both categories from the last 20 years, the categories are alarmingly similar in their results. This begs the question: do the Grammy voters even understand, or at least pay attention to, the difference in these categories? -Break- Record of the Year is given to the artist, producer and engineer for a recorded single while Song of the Year goes to the songwriter for the written composition. But do Grammy voters distinguish what it is they like about a hit song: the lyrics, the melody, the vocal, the production? After all, the winners of both races have lined up more often than not over the last two decades. If...

Read More: Attention, Female Filmmakers: The Film Fatales Are Here to Help You The Director List, the web site dedicated to news about women film and TV directors and their projects, has just launched its new web site which features an online database with a list of 850 female directors of movies, TV shows, music videos and commercials. Searchable by medium, genre and home base, this database allows for film and TV executives to find female directors for their projects. "Year after year the statistics on the number of women directors being hired for film and TV projects remains depressingly low. Our hope is that this database will lead to more women directors being added to director lists around town and more women being considered for jobs, and hired!" said Destri Martino, founder of The Director List, in a press release. The web site will strive to shed light on the...

In our writers' favourite films series, Rosie Swash explains why she is bowled over by the Coen brothers' surreal masterpiece
• Big-up your version of The Big Lebowski by posting your review – or go large in the comments
• Dudeism, the faith that abides in The Big Lebowski
Before we get into this, I should say that my other favourite film is Casablanca. Romance, sacrifice, heroism, war; Casablanca has it all. But does it have the Dude engaging in a plan to confront an adolescent car thief while watching his landlord perform an interpretative dance while dressed as a tree? No, it does not.
Like a teenager who discovers Che Guevara T-shirts, there is nothing original or particularly inspired about liking The Big Lebowski. So predictable, you'll say. Dear God, it's not even the best film by the Coen brothers, have you not seen Barton Fink? Year after year, I watch films that make me cry,...
