Absolute Thriller! ♦ 83%
nairtejas7 July 2013
The makers have taken a very simple story on a current affair and done wonders to it. The simplistic approach which creates spine-chilling thrills is the reason i rate it a good 8.3/10.

Lal is good, Vinay Fort is better but Sajitha Madathil is best. She is the best performer in the movie with the right demeanor for a prostitute. I can only imagine the improvisation she carried out. Supporting cast is good enough. Sreenivasan is wasted, moreover his performance doesn't impress.

The screenplay is very slow in the beginning, but a time comes when things start moving so fast, your full concentration is required. Mostly the times when characters think what would happen next - those are splendid. Music isn't that great because it doesn't have any. Cinematography is good, casting is very good and overall a very fine thriller.

BOTTOM LINE: Must watch! Highly recommended!

Can be watched with a typical Indian family? YES

Profanity: Mild | Nudity: No | Sex: Implied | Vulgarity: Mild | Smoking/Alcohol: Strong | Violence/Gore: Mild | Drugs: No

Excellent

Its a well made movie, I really like the way they filled the sense of tension, without much effort. A master piece. All the actors in film have done their part, especially the driver was excellent in his role. When i went to watch, I didn't had much expectations, but once the movie started I was been drawn into it. kudos to director. I really hope the team is planning few more movies like this which stays close to real life. And i hope they will use a better cam to shoot it next time. I'm not surprised the actress got second best actress award at state film, she did that challenging role wonderfully well. The well paced movie never bores you except for one scene at the end between the father and daughter. I hope everyone will watch and let us know what you think.

The false morality of Malayalis
PimpinAinttEasy25 July 2013
SHUTTER is a Malayalam thriller that attacks the false morality of a middle class Kozhikodan Muslim male who wouldn't even let his daughter talk on the mobile with her friends. I recommend this film, it is one of the better Malayalam movies of recent times along with EE ADUTHA KAALATHU. Not only does it expose the hypocrisy of middle class Malayalis, but it portrays Kerala's infamous drinking culture with great hilarity.

LAL (not Mohanlal) has been lucky enough to work in a number of leading roles in the last 5 years starting with SALT N PEPPER. I guess the indifference of superstars like Mammoty and Mohanlal towards independent filmmakers has made them turn to actors like LAL. SREENIVASAN is perfectly cast as a cynical filmmaker. The rest of the cast is at least above average.

The film does suffer from some major problems like - the sub-plot with Srinivasan as the cynical filmmaker is more interesting than the main plot. Secondly, the screenplay could have been tighter. After a point, it just goes on and on with Vinay Fort bumbling around without any resolution. The scenes between Lal and Sajitha Madathil inside the closed shop is just not interesting enough.

But even then, this is a very interesting film. I look forward to more from director John Paul (who plays a guest role in this movie).

Warning: Spoilers
Shutter (2012) Is A Must Watch Suspense Thriller.

Movie Is Slow enough for a movie in Malayalam which is just made to get an award.

Lead Male Roles which is Rasheed acted by Lal and Namyail Suran acted by Vinay Fort was just awesome.

Lead Female Role which is Thankam acted by Sajitha Madathil was also good enough for an award.

Riya Saira's role Nila and Sreenivasan's Manoharan had a great importance in the climax and the forward movement of the story.

SPOILER! This movie says the story about an rickshaw driver Suran, his friend Rasheed and their gang who goes to the bar to get alcohol and finds a lady standing in the bus stop. Rasheed says to Suran to ask the lady whether she was a call girl and come spent one night with Rasheed for money. Meanwhile, hours before Manoharan a film director gets in the Rikshaw driven by Suran. He forgets to take his bag from the vehicle. The lady named Thankam agrees to do so and spends a night in a small studio made for trade. Suran who went out to get food for them locks the building and left. At the hotel he meets sreenivasan and offers his bag back. They uses alcohol and drive the vehicle they gets caught by the cops. The story is a thriller showing the life of Thankam and Rasheed inside the building, Manoharan trying to get his bag back, and Suran trying to get Rasheed out of the building without getting attention by the people.

Wonderful Piece of Art
skyisourlimit24 March 2024
The story begins with such clean image of our society, specially the view of male towards female in the middle class conservative society. The acting of each and every character was absolutely natural. While watching the movie I was feeling goosebumps, even though it wasn't any sort of crime thriller or serial killer kind of movie, it really holds a strong sense of suspense till the end. So, maybe it can be considered as a suspense thriller movie, but it really has a strong thrill in it for sure.

But the movie ends with a really wonderful moral message.

The whole movie is well directed and the story as well as the acting grabs the whole attention till the end.

A psychological test you don't know the result
Insane_Man30 September 2020
I was about to stop it watching when I found too much boring and non-sense dialogues. Yet I gave it a try because it seemed to me that something is happening without anyone's knowledge. Thus the consequence make the movie full of tension and psychological pressure. While you watch this movie keep in mind the first half will be boring but on't ignore a moment, a scene. Just watch patiently.

Rasheed (Lal) deliver a great performance of a father who is locked in a closed shop with a sex woman, whom he liked while he was drunk. It was his most bad luck the shop become closed by one of his known auto driver, which was done in a consequence made by the situation.

The ending handled very well. Such an almost perfect script. Almost perfect casting. Almost everyone did very well, especially Lal.

I have seen only a few Malayalam movies. 'Shutter' shines them all. Such a simple story yet so intriguing. Perfectly crafted. Malayalam people know about cinema. Kudos to everyone involved. I can only wish this kind of cinema reaches more people. This country has some real talent in it.
