It's so startling. "David Lynch" would be proud.

What's not incorrect while watching this. The Way the tension rises, from strange to insanity. A perfect culmination that begs to be examined.

...let's all agree to never be creative again.
Pjtaylor-96-1380443 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
'Don't Hug Me I'm Scared (2011)' is nightmare fuel with a catchy tune. What starts out as a seemingly innocent kid's show soon descends into a barrage of uncanny imagery, shocking gore and subtly unsettling sentiments (such as "green is not a creative colour" and "let's all agree to never be creative again".) The piece is executed really well. Its colourful aesthetic and catchy song feel incredibly authentic, and the flick carefully hides its truly dark underbelly behind this seemingly sincere veneer of innocence. At its heart, it's a dark satire of children's programming. To me, this first film is about (beware mild spoilers for its theming) the way in which children's education - both television and the school system - doesn't really encourage creativity, instead providing a really closed-minded definition of it or steering people away from it altogether. This is represented by the fact that the singing notebook constantly undermines the creative efforts of Yellow Guy, Red Guy and Duck (see the aforementioned "green is not a creative colour"). The fact that the short becomes a horrific nightmare and ends on the sentiment of "never be creative again" is also emblematic of its biting social commentary. In the end, this is a well-executed and highly interesting short film. Its horror is initially blindsiding and it'll probably stick with you for as long as the piece's ear-worm of a song. It's great. 9/10.

1: A good start to a mostly great series
itwperiod20 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is good for a start.

The song is considerably bland compared to all of the others, had a (sort of) moderated amount of gore. It was creative and has a lot of cool scenes, especially like the computer animation we see more of in episode 4.

Unfortunately there is no humor in it :/

Really great spoof on children's programming
bob the moo15 December 2013
Three non-threatening puppets sit around a table while a singing notebook encourages them to be creative. This is the simple idea here and it is laid out to be a very convincing children's television show as the notebook sings about imagination and creativity in a very generic way. This song is catchy but also has some really great lines and moments – "green is not a creative color" being my favorite because it made me laugh and also reminds us that generally trying to "teach" creativity will just need to reinforce bounds rather than encourage freedom.

The notebook gets what it wants as the three characters start to explore whatever comes to their imaginations, leading to some disturbing images and situations which very quickly take the cheerful little short out of the world of kids TV and into the dark world that lies inside. It is very cleverly done because it is funny, spot on as a satire and really well made. I see that the film has 12 million views on YouTube and, although I had never heard of it, I am not surprised that it struck a chord.

Warning: Spoilers
This short is gripping and is the first to a very good YouTube series and even though it's disguised as a children's thing it is actually very disturbing and shouldn't be viewed by people under the age of 14 for they might not be able to handle it

Childhood Trauma
ploofn17 April 2019
This traumatized me as a kid. In my eyes it's about the blissful innocence of youth and how that changes when you get older. Here it's expressed through blood and gore and creepy dancing, when the real life parallel would be being exposed and jaded to the horrid reality of life as you get older. War, sexual abuse, pornography, crime, all that stuff. To me it's about how sudden and crazy growing up really is and how you brain becomes screwed up as you age. When you're a kid being creative sounds wonderful, and it's mostly portrayed here as a wonderful thing until the end. They reveal the dark side that Sesame Street would never show you and that's continued throughout all 6 episodes. Creativity is usually great, but people like Osama Bin Laden or Ted Bundy had to be creative to pull off what they did. You can get creative with a gun and a bunch of weapons. It's incredibly well done in every respect.

Amazing

Warning: Spoilers
This animation is incredible. It is scary, intense and made to look like a children's program but takes a very dark twist. I recommend that people under 15 should be accompanied by an adult (18 or over) because it has very scary and intense scenes that could cause major fear. Age rating should be 15.

Warning: Spoilers
Honestly it's brilliant the way it criticises new children content that's blinded by the money and fame with roy being the 'puppet master' behind everything. DHMIS tells a genius story that's so frightening funny and sad. The characters are so iconic and down right amazing. They have such great designes and the puppet work can be compered to 'child's play' in its skills. I will explain a bit of the story. The characters are red guy yellow guy and duck. They all live in this world of a children's show that's been corrupted by Roy, yellow guys father. He has turned every day to June 19th fathers day. He is punishing his child for letting his mind wander as yellow guy caught roy watching pixely women on a beach. My favourite episode was episode 5. It was a masterpiece with how well it was created. You could tell by the start something was off. Duck was terrified by the big meat man and the spinach. But he went along with it. And oh my god when 12 year old me saw duck beating eaten alive I knew this was trauma but it was worth it. This show needs to locked up in a museum and cherished for years it's so creative and the TV show was awesome aswell bravo Becky Sloan, Joe Pelling, and Baker Terry.

Just Cringe!

Warning: Spoilers
This looks like a weird ripoff from the Muppets. It is just hard to explain. When one of the characters was putting gold glitter on a heart I just freaked out and wondered if this meant anything. I'm ready to watch the next one! It is weird and but it isn't that bad!

Twisted version of Sesame Street
Josephpr199015 July 2023
I remember watching this British comedy horror web series for the first time in July 2013 and I was twenty-three years old in that year. I thought I never saw any web series like that before in my entire life. It's kinda very dark, bizarre and disturbing but it's also very funny and entertaining. I absolutely love the series. It appears to be a dark version of an American children's television programme Sesame Street.

It's definitely not for kids as it seems to be way too frightening for kids as we know.

Anyway Red Guy is my favourite character in the series and my favourite teachers in the series are Tony, Colin and Sketchbook as well.

Very weird
Horst_In_Translation27 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
"Don't Hug Me I'm Scared" is a British award-winning 3-minute cartoon by Joseph Pelling and Becky Sloan. It is usually never a good sign if the filmmakers appears as voice actors themselves, but I guess here they did a fine job. Early on, I wasn't yet sure if this film is a parody or really takes itself seriously, but the longer it goes the more obvious it becomes that it is all just a spoof. So it's nothing your children (or you) really need to see. There are a couple sequels here, but this first one here lacked the creativity to really make me interested in these. The song was kinda catchy though and probably the highlight from the whole thing. The rest of the watch was definitely pretty awkward, but neither funny nor entertaining I have to say. Not recommended.

bizarre
Kirpianuscus24 December 2018
First episode from a provocative serie, it is far to be a comfortable animation. It reminds "Sesame Street" and this is the first piece of its eccentricity. It is an eulogy of creativity but its tools are far for children. It propose the happiness as rule but, in same measure, a bizarre cake. Sure, it is an Youtube experiment. Nice. And bizarre.
