June 4, 2024 – Academy Award winner Sir Ben Kingsley, beloved James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan and Star Wars universe luminary Mark Hamill form the ultimate vocal rogues’ gallery in Mofac Animation’s upcoming The King of Kings, an animated family film inspired by a little-known short story by Charles Dickens depicting the life and times of Jesus Christ.
Kingsley voices High Priest Caiaphas, who presided over the Sanhedrin trial of Jesus. Hamill takes on the role of King Herod, who, according to the Gospel of Matthew, ordered the Massacre of the Innocents in an attempt to kill Jesus as an infant. And Brosnan gives animated life to Pontius Pilate, who ultimately ordered the crucifixion of Jesus. The triumvirate of villainous voices further enhances the A-list cast behind the faith-based animated film, which also includes Academy Award & Emmy Award winners Kenneth Branagh (Belfast) and Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Golden Globe...

Exclusive: Ilfenesh Hadera (Godfather of Harlem) has been tapped to star opposite Denzel Washington in Apple and A24’s High and Low, an English-language reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller, from filmmaker Spike Lee.
She comes to the project following collaborations with Lee on his acclaimed Netflix series She’s Gotta Have It, based on his classic 1986 film, as well as his movies Chi-Raq and Oldboy.
Loosely based on the 1959 novel King’s Ransom, written by Evan Hunter under the pen name Ed McBain, the original High and Low watches as a shoe company executive becomes a victim of extortion when his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped by mistake and held for ransom. It’s unclear how closely Lee’s film will hew to the original storyline, and there’s no word yet as to the role Hadera will play.

David Simon is developing a new series at HBO, Variety has learned exclusively.
Simon is attached to write and executive produce the drama project, currently titled “The System.” Lily Thorne and Larissa MacFarquhar will also write and co-executive produce, with Kiese Laymon also attached to write.
The project is based on a series of New Yorker articles written by MacFarquhar. The official description states that the show “will examine the foster care and child protective service systems from the viewpoint of family court judges and lawyers, as well as social workers, caretakers, mothers, and the children themselves, and will probe the risks and benefits of removing children from families of origin.”
Should the project move forward, it would be Simon’s ninth HBO series. He is perhaps best known for his work on the critically-acclaimed series “The Wire,” which aired for five seasons at the premium cabler. He most recently...

Marvel’s Moon Knight followed Oscar Isaac in the first season as he played a man suffering from dissociative identity disorder (Did) who not only has multiple personalities or ‘alters’, but also serves as a vessel for the Egyptian god Khonshu. Since Isaac’s Marc Spector / Moon Knight was first introduced in the MCU almost two years ago, many fans have been wondering if Jeremy Slater’s miniseries will ever see the release of a second season.
In October 2022, the Show Me a Hero actor, 44, revealed that he had begun talks with Marvel Studios about reprising his role as Moon Knight, either in a sequel series or in a different project. Isaac was concerned about creating a “worth telling” and “interesting” backstory for his character.

Meanwhile, recent rumors suggest that Kit Harington’s Black Knight, also known as Dane Whitman, may return in the potential second season.

FX’s “Fargo” is facing some tough competition at the Golden Globes this year in the form of Netflix’s “Beef.” Noah Hawley‘s anthology limited series follows a different cast and storyline every season with the latest installment, the fifth season, featuring the likes of Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. This story follows a kidnapping gone wrong that leads to implications for many.
This season has fared well, garnering three Golden Globe nominations: Best Limited Series/TV Movie, Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor for Hamm, and Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress for Temple. These two acting bids add to the Golden Globes history of “Fargo,” which has often done well in snagging nominations for its cast. Here’s the breakdown.
The first season saw Billy Bob Thornton win Best Limited Series/TV Movie in 2015 while co-star Martin Freeman was also nominated in the same category.

Loyalty and quality of work mean nothing to corporations when weighed against maintaining their profit and power, and HBO proved this true once again by suspending their deal with "The Wire" creator David Simon. The news broke via Simon himself, who shared it on Twitter and noted (with video evidence) that when he received the news, he was doing the "write thing" — walking a picket line with his fellow Writers Guild of America (WGA) members.
In case you doubted whether these two events were connected, Simon clarified in a subsequent tweet that the suspension was a "Strike response and not unexpected." Simon is outspoken about his beliefs and (liberal) politics, so his supporting the strike with such fervor is no surprise.

eOne and Crime Story Media have partnered with LAist 89.3, Los Angeles’ number one NPR station and podcast company Acast to present the original podcast series, Night Raid. Night Raid tells the story of a chaotic 2014 Swat raid on a home in San Gabriel that resulted in the death of Pomona Police Officer Shaun Diamond and the incarceration of David Martinez.
While the critical moments in the operation occurred in a matter of seconds, the story spans decades - from a contentious relationship between the Atf and a motorcycle club in the the 70’s to two explosive murder trials in 2019 and 2022.
Each week, the series unpacks aspects of that story using interviews, testimony reenactments, and jailhouse and police recordings.

Dominique Fishback is making gains in the Emmy race for Best Movie/Limited Actress for her performance as an obsessed fan in the Amazon limited series “Swarm.” She recently moved into our top six based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users. Do you think she’ll make the cut for the first time after a few years of near-misses in the awards derby?
Fishback has TV and film credits going back a decade, but it was a couple of HBO projects that raised her profile: the limited series “Show Me a Hero” in 2015 and the drama “The Deuce” from 2017 to 2019. Then came her 2021 performance in “Judas and the Black Messiah” as Deborah Johnson, a Black Panthers activist and the girlfriend of assassinated Panthers leader Fred Hampton. On a bright sunny morning in Los Angeles via a Zoom video call, Dominique Fishback was sporting a Romeo and Juliet-inspired sweatshirt (“I’m a romanticist at heart,” she says) and a 100-watt smile to match the light coming into her room.
Fishback’s warm demeanor matches most of the characters she’s played previously; more recently she had a BAFTA-nominated role in Judas and the Black Messiah and scene-stealing parts in HBO’s The Deuce and Show Me a Hero. But Swarm is her big departure. In the Amazon limited series from co-creators Donald Glover and Janine Nabers, Fishback delivers a frightening performance as an unassuming and introverted bloody serial killer.
Fishback giggles and nods her head at the mention of the dichotomy. She’s nothing like the character she portrays in Swarm, but it’s easily one of the roles she’s most proud of in her career.

Between Show Me a Hero, The Deuce, Judas and the Black Messiah and The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, Dominique Fishback could have an Oscar nomination and a small pile of Emmy nods on her resumé. She does not.
But Fishback’s stretch as one of entertainment’s most reliable and overlooked actresses should reach a turning point with Amazon’s Swarm, an indescribable new seven-parter from Janine Nabers and, in his first show since Atlanta, Donald Glover. Holding down nearly every second of the horror-comedy/road-trip hybrid, Fishback is scintillating, giving a performance that had me rewatching laugh-out-loud or heartbreaking beats — and probably demands a full series rewatch to see how each piece of new or expectation-flipping information informs each acting decision.
It’s a performance of deliriously bizarre choices anchoring a show of deliriously bizarre choices, and I wish I could be as confidently effusive about Swarm as I am about its star.

June 2 marks 20 years since HBO’s legendary crime drama The Wire first aired. And while it’s now thought of as an all-time classic, that wasn’t always evident to audiences early on. To honor its 20 years as a TV staple, let’s talk about how the program evolved and why it remains such an influential work today.
These are the 20 reasons the show is relevant in 2022.
1. Policing As a Broken Institution
The show was one of the first post-9/11 properties to depict police as imperfect individuals rather than flawless heroes, and law enforcement as a thoroughly flawed institution. The motivations of the police officers in The Wire are often immoral and the discussion of how to fix policing in America is one that we are still having two decades later.
2. Its Attention to Dialect

Rizzoli and Isles haven't solved a new case on TV in nearly six years.
While Tess Gerritsen continues to write new novels on the beloved duo, we've been left with a significant gap in our lives as their lives go on without us bearing witness on-screen.
The iconic duo of Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander were TV staples for over 100 episodes, but what are they (and the rest of the cast) doing now?
In Memorium: Lee Thompson Young -- Detective Barry Frost
Lee Thompson Young, who played Detective Frost (one of Jane Rizzoli's closest co-workers), tragically passed away in 2013 before the filming of Season Five.
Detective Frost's death got handled beautifully by the writers, from his death in Rizzoli and Isles Season 5 Episode 1 to Jane seeing a vision of him in Rizzoli and Isles Season 5 Episode 18.
The episodes throughout Season Five left us crying, laughing, and missing Lee Thompson Young's presence on our screens.

Dominique Fishback holds her own opposite Samuel L. Jackson in Apple TV+’s “The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey,” and she says that was inspired by the strength of the character. “I wasn’t really nervous because Robyn is not nervous of Ptolemy,” she tells Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast. “She’s not intimidated by him. So therefore, I’m not gonna do that because I’m representing this character.”
On this edition of the Variety Awards Circuit podcast, Fishback talks about “The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey,” and working with Jackson, as well as her take on the character, playing teenage roles even as she enters her 30s, her interest in astrology and how she’s enjoying her success. Later in this episode, “Mr. Mayor” star Bobby Moynihan on the joys of his ensemble comedy, which sadly was just canceled on Thursday as this episode made it to air.

“Moon Knight” has taken off with critics and superhero fans around the globe, raking in enormous numbers for Disney+ and Marvel Studios. As a result, the two studios are gearing up for a hardy Emmys campaign with the show in the limited series categories, especially following the success of “WandaVision,” which co-led the tally for all series with 23 nominations (winning three) last year. However, a tweet shared from Marvel Studios’ official Twitter account could throw a potential wrench in their campaign.
Created by Jeremy Slater, the entire promotional tour for “Moon Knight” had the two major studios referring to the show as a “limited series,” with the presumption this would be a standalone television outing for the Marvel Comics character. However, on Monday, Marvel’s official Twitter page shared the trailer for today’s final episode, referring to it as “the epic series finale,” but the tweet was taken down...

Scripted limited-run dramas inspired by recent, buzzy true-crime tales have recently oversaturated the market. And yet for as many as there are, notably few have drawn from what is arguably America’s most consequential (and most intractable) criminal justice phenomenon. The problem of dysfunctional policing and its disproportionate impact on communities of color has been largely ignored by scripted television, save for occasional arcs on the fictional police dramas whose rose-tinted views of police work have contributed to that very issue. (The quality of such well-intentioned episodes generally ranges between “Not totally humiliating” and “May induce cringe spasms.”)
The recent exception is “When They See Us,” Ava DuVernay’s gut-wrenching retelling of the Central Park Five case, which remains a potent example of how myopic and flawed police investigations can ruin lives. That show drew its power from how relevant the issues it explored remain three decades since the real-life incident that inspired it.

It’s disappointing to report that, contrary to its IMDb page, Treat Williams does not appear in all six episodes of “We Own This City,” George Pelecanos and David Simon’s new HBO miniseries, adapted from the book by Justin Fenton. But the good news is that when he finally does turn up in the penultimate episode, the show has generated such weight that his appearance has the proper power; for an epic saga of police corruption, nothing could feel more like the Pope giving his blessing than a cameo by the star of “Prince of the City.”

The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey's Dominique Fishback Breaks Down Her Mission to Honor Black Teen Girls
Dominique Fishback has played a lot of surly teens on the big and small screen, which is why she almost turned down the chance to work alongside Samuel L. Jackson on The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey.
Then she read the script and realized there was room to make her character Robyn different from all her other portrayals such as Darlene, a sex worker on The Deuce or Billie, an inner city kid in Show Me a Hero, both on HBO. And as viewers of the Apple TV+ limited series (which drops new installments every Friday) can attest, Fishback shines...

Oscar Isaac has been one of the hottest actors of the past decade, starring in a number of acclaimed films and box office smashes. But it is only now that the actor is getting recognition from the Screen Actors Guild, for his soul-bearing performance in the HBO limited series “Scenes from a Marriage.” Isaac’s delicate work opposite Jessica Chastain landed him a nomination in Best TV Movie/Mini Actor at this year’s SAG Awards, where he stands a chance of winning on his first try.
Isaac is joined by two other first-timers in TV Movie/Mini Actor, both from HBO miniseries of their own — Murray Bartlett (“The White Lotus”) and Evan Peters (“Mare of Easttown”). The other two nominees have a decent SAG history including Ewan McGregor (“Halston”), who scores his first individual recognition after three ensemble bids for “Little Voice” (1998), “Moulin Rouge!” (2001), and “August: Osage County” (2013). Oscar Isaac knows a thing or two about big franchises. While the actor is known for his acclaimed character roles, he also found mainstream success as Poe Dameron in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy and played the titular villain in “X-Men: Apocalypse.” Given his serious box office chops, some were surprised when it was announced that Isaac would be joining Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe in a television role rather than a film one.
Isaac recently wrapped “Moon Knight,” a Disney+ series that finds him playing the mercenary superhero who receives the powers of an Egyptian god alongside Ethan Hawke and May Calamawy. The six-episode limited series is set to debut at the end of next month. But if you ask Oscar Isaac the actor has zero objections to the character living on Disney+. The HBO limited series “Scenes from a Marriage” features one of Oscar Isaac‘s finest performances to date. As Jonathan, a philosophy professor dealing with the disintegration of his marriage, the actor gets the opportunity to run the gamut of emotions, particularly keying into his character’s vulnerability. It is a role that is practically tailor-made for Isaac, blending his signature charm with a sensitivity we don’t always see in male actors. And it might just be the role that finally nets him an overdue nomination at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

When Jess Paine and Ramon Watkins were announced as the inaugural recipients of the In Dreams Fellowship at the beginning of last year, their aspirations of cracking the US market were given a significant boost.

David Simon, creator of acclaimed HBO series such as “The Wire,” “Show Me a Hero,” and “The Deuce,” revealed on social media this week he is writing a new HBO project “based on events in Texas,” but he will not shoot the project in the state because of its abortion ban law. Simon is one of the first high-profile showrunners to refuse to film in Texas.
“As an employer, this is beyond politics,” Simon wrote on Twitter. “I’m turning in scripts next month on an HBO non-fiction miniseries based on events in Texas, but I can’t and won’t ask female cast/crew to forgo civil liberties to film there. What else looks like Dallas/Ft. Worth?”
The Dallas Film & Creative Industries Office, formerly known as the Dallas Film Commission, pushed back against Simon with a post that read: “Laws of a state are not reflective of its entire population.

Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain grapple with the complexities of love in HBO’s limited series “Scenes From a Marriage,” which released its first trailer. The highly anticipated remake will debut on HBO on September 12.
The original 1973 miniseries was written and directed by legendary Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman. “Scenes From a Marriage” traced the story of a wealthy married couple across a decade, from the relationship’s demise to its reconciliation and beyond. The series was based on Bergman’s own relationship with muse and partner Liv Ullmann, who toplined the original with Erland Josephson, to whom he was married to from 1965 to 1970. In 1974, the original was condensed from its six parts to a three-hour movie for an American release.
The modern-day iteration of the series is co-created, written and directed by Hagai Levi, the co-creator and writer behind the Golden Globe-winning series “The Affair,” which also explored a tumultuous marriage.

Just about the only irony to be found in Paul Weitz’s earnest and tender “Fatherhood” is that its story, about a single father’s extraordinary efforts to overcome his immaturity and selfishness to raise an infant after his wife’s death, plays so effortlessly on screen.
“Fatherhood” may offer pleasing platitudes and uncomplicated life lessons about trying hard, being present, and the healing power of love, but at least the film eschews cloying contrivances on its journey to big smiles and feel-good hugs.
Father-to-be Matt (Kevin Hart) is a well-intentioned and affable man whose tenuous grasp on responsibility doesn’t quite extend far enough to build the crib in time for the birth of his daughter, Maddy. When Matt’s wife, Liz, unexpectedly dies of a pulmonary embolism barely a day after giving birth, Matt has to quickly and simultaneously navigate the exhausting paths of grieving husband and single parent.

American Gigolo is moving full steam ahead at Showtime.
Today, the premium cabler announced a series order for a 10-episode reboot, which is written and directed by Emmy nominee David Hollander (Ray Donovan).
Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the original film, will executive produce with Jonathan Littman and KristieAnne Reed.
Bernthal also serves as a producer. The project is a production of Paramount Television Studios.
American Gigolo is a present-day reimagining of the iconic 1980 film.
Bernthal will play Julian Kaye, who is introduced 18 years after being arrested for murder and struggling to find his footing in the modern-day Los Angeles sex industry.
This happens while seeking the truth about the set-up that sent him to prison all those years ago and also hoping to reconnect with Michelle, his one true love.
“If you haven’t already fallen under the spell of Jon Bernthal, get ready,” said Showtime president Gary Levine in a statement.

“If you haven’t already fallen under the spell of Jon Bernthal, get ready,” said Showtime president Gary Levine in a statement.
