Just the name of the feminist collective Pussy Riot triggers reaction, which is its purpose.
HBO's documentary "Pussy Riot - A Punk Prayer," airing Monday (June 10), tries to explain how a 40-second protest inside a church resulted in three of them being thrown in prison (with two still there), and sparked worldwide debate.
"It is the story of a foiled feminist revolution and that is one of the things that has been lost," Maxim Pozdorovkin, one of the filmmakers, tells Zap2it.
"The story has been misrepresented in the West and in Russia," he says. "In Russia it is presented as vulgar hooligans, motivated by religious hatred. And in the West, it is seen as an innocent punk band, just for singing an anti-Putin song. And the reality is so much more epic and generally thought-provoking, and forces us to ask of any society: What is and isn't allowed? What is your right as artists?...

As Superman prepares for global lift-off, Cocker fine-tunes the premiere of the opening night film at the Sheffield Doc/Fest
This year's Sheffield documentary festival kicks off on Wednesday with a double celebration for the city: it's hosted the fest for two decades, and it's put in 100 making stainless steel.
The opening night event, The Big Melt, smelts the two together: a documentary by Martin Wallace, it splices archive footage of the city and its steelworkers to a live soundtrack by Jarvis Cocker and other Sheffield musical alumni, including the City of Sheffield Brass Band, Richard Hawley and members of his band, some of Cocker's Pulp colleagues, the Forgemasters, a string quartet and a youth choir.
Said Cocker: "I only hope that we can pay proper homage to the extraordinary individuals featured in this footage. Our aim is to melt faces (and hearts) and to blow minds. With maybe a...

Following the successful airing of festival favorite "Behind the Candelabra" this past Sunday, HBO Films is trying to build buzz around another festival acquisition with a new trailer for the Sundance documentary "Pussy Riot - A Punk Prayer." The film focusing on the three-member band's trial won a Special Jury prize in Park City this January and recently earned an opening night slot at the Sheffield Doc/Fest. The trailer is meaningfully brief. Clocking in at 40 seconds, the new spot matches the time of Pussy Riot's contentious 40-second performance they dubbed as a "punk prayer." It doesn't give away too much, but we do get a few brief glimpses of the band (both masked and unmasked), the trial, and the ensuing riots. "Pussy Riot - A Punk Prayer" is scheduled to air on June 10 on HBO. Take a look at the new spot below.

The Sheffield Doc/Fest is celebrating its 20th year with a slew of nonstop screenings and events that will run from June 12-16. Instead of launching with one opening night film, the fest will launch with a whopping three, one of which will be screened in Europe's largest cave opening, Peak District Devil's Arse. The opening night selections include: "The Big Melt," "Pussy Riot - A Punk Prayer" and "The Summit." "The Big Melt," making its world premiere, pays homage to a Century of Steel by mixing moving pictures alongside the music of Jarvis Cocker and his longtime collaborator Martin Wallace. "Pussy Riot - A Punk Prayer" centers on the story of the three women, members of the feminist art collective Pussy Riot, who made national headlines after being arrested for their satirical performance in a Moscow cathedral, on charges of religious hatred. "The Summit" recounts in detail the deadliest...

Russian filmmaker Maxim Pozdorovkin and co-director Mike Lerner's "Pussy Riot - A Punk Prayer," winner of the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award, charts the controversial arrests of the radicial punk rock group of the same name. Pozdorovkin, who shares a similar political ideology with the feminist band members, along with Lerner attempts to uncover the truths surrounding first 8 months of the story that began in a Russian Catherdral. What It's About: Pussy. Riot. Feminism, revolution, punk rock, performance art, political protest, religious fundamentalism, the limits of free expression, idealism, and some of the greatest speeches you will ever hear. And So It's Really About: In many ways, "Pussy Riot" is a classic story of a younger generation making itself heard by any means necessary. Titled Pussy Riot - A Punk Prayer, the feature-length documentary premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Friday (January 18). In a statement, directors Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin said they "are thrilled to be working with HBO on bringing this important story to the world".
Speaking last month (December 2012), the directors told NME that they tried to show the personal side of the Pussy Riot story. Pozdorovkin explained: "The film features footage from their trial, so you see how Pussy Riot turn it into a sort of performance. The girls really flourish and take on this role that's thrust on them. In the seventies, Russia didn't have a punk movement, so Pussy Riot is like 'God Save The Queen' for them."...
