Composer and pianist Anders Allström stopped writing as he lost kid daughter Solveigh in a car crash, for whom he prepared an opera, and his marriage with her mother Ingrid, who manages him, broke down. With faithful dog Mats, he anonymously seeks rest in rural village Lillekron and takes a growing interest in lively kindergarten teacher Livia Nordgren, bumping into her while she helps her real estate agent fiance Magnus's uncle Gösta keeping bees. She feels attracted to silent Allström, enough to start doubting a marriage to Magnus, who expects her to move with him for his dream job to Stockholm, for which he also expects uncle Gösta to sell his wooden home, which is needed for a major development which could make his reputation. Anders's wife Ingrid's arrival in Lillekron stirs him and Livia to make up their minds.
