- Jenny Ma, a minimalist Asian American mother, is confronted with her daughter's arrival home from college as she struggles to understand a balance between her past traditional values and the new carefree lifestyle her daughter chooses.
- Jenny Ma is a 50-year-old second generation immigrant who grew up in the United States under very strict, traditional values taught by her Chinese mother. Residing in the Bay Area as a lawyer with two daughters, Jenny struggles between following traditional values she grew up with and accepting newer, carefree views on life from the new generation. Her views are first challenged when her oldest daughter, Isabelle, comes home from college to visit, and has clearly adopted a more carefree outlook on life. Isabelle, an aspiring UI/UX designer attending UCLA, loves indulging in the latest fashion trends, listening to music, and watching movies, and finally gets to expand on her interests more now that she is an adult. While their values may be different, Isabelle still highly respects her mother and acknowledges her hard work. At first, Jenny is under the impression that Isabelle no longer prioritizes their relationship, and fears that her new lifestyle will prevent her from finding a career in the future. This insecurity is further emphasized when Jenny calls her mother, and is reminded of the traditional values that have been instilled in her for so long to prioritize school, hard work, and efficiency above all else. Worried that Isabelle's new change will influence her youngest daughter Jessica, who is about to enter high school, Jenny and Isabelle come into conflict about Isabelle's maximalist lifestyle. Although they struggle at first, Jenny and Isabelle are able to find common ground on their outlooks on life when Jenny is reminded of her past through Isabelle's film camera. This event reminds Jenny of forgotten memories she had with her own film camera in her late adolescence, before she got caught up in schoolwork and worried about her career. The limitations of shooting on a film camera mirror the lack of control Jenny has over Isabelle as she grows older, but Jenny begins to embrace it. While the efficiency associated with living a minimalist lifestyle helped Jenny's generation move ahead, Jenny gains a deeper understanding of her daughter and her life becomes more fulfilling by finding joy through sentimental objects.—Suanna Zhong
