“I can’t sing, I can’t dance, I can’t write… no real talent. But I’m pretty, and I can make money off pretty.”
Amazon Studio’s The Neon Demon directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, is a sumptuous horror-thriller, set in the highly competitive and often vicious world of fashion modeling, where the term “eat their own” takes on a decidedly new meaning. When aspiring model Jesse moves to Los Angeles, her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will use any means necessary to get what she has. The film is co-written by Refn (Bronson, Drive, Only God Forgives, Valhalla Rising), Mary Laws (”Preacher”) and Polly Stenham; and stars Elle Fanning (Maleficent,Super 8), Karl Glusman (Love, Stonewall), Jena Malone (Inherent Vice, The Hunger Games series), Bella Heathcote (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Dark Shadows), Abbey Lee (Gods of Egypt, Max Max:...

While writing and directing a well-received short film can be a great stepping stone to features, aspiring feature directors should avoid the trap of making short after short.
Producer Raquelle David expressed that view on social media, prompting a flood of comments, some in full support, others disagreeing.
.Australian writers and directors that have made one solid short film need to stop making more,. said David, who has produced more than a dozen shorts and is developing several features.
.Seriously, stop. Focus on the feature or high-end TV concept and work with producers that will help you realise it. I'm so worried about our industry pumping out great shorts but bugger all else..
Screenwriter Shane Danielsen, who made his directing debut on the short The Guests, which screened in official competition in Cannes, produced by David, responded, .Could not agree more..

Place Beyond the Pines: Bier’s Ungainly Period Piece Revels in Unintentional Gaffs
Danish director Susanna Bier’s second English language film, Serena, has gained a bit of notoriety after an unexpected delayed theatrical release in the Us. A melodramatically inclined period piece based on a novel by Ron Rash (author of The World Made Straight, of which an adaptation was released earlier this year), the lush production design and starry cast creates a misleading veneer, which slowly gives way to a rather kooky portrait of its eponymous lead character. Presented with soberingly grim determination, the film lapses into unintentionally laughable territory, though not to a degree worthy of camp aesthetic or cult following.
Filming shortly after their award winning collaboration on 2012’s The Silver Linings Playbook, the first onscreen reunion of Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper finally saw a premiere at the 2014 London Film Festival and reactions have been...

The time-travel tale starring Ethan Hawke, Sarah Snook and Noah Taylor opened on 20 screens, making a fair $US43,000 in the first three days.
Typifying the rave reviews, Rolling Stone.s Pete Travers declared, .To try and wrap your head around the plot of Predestination can only lead to madness. Don't get me wrong: The movie itself is a trip. Just jump off the cliff and go with the Spierig brothers, Peter and Michael, as they whoosh into the labyrinth of their own fervid imaginations. Title: The World Made Straight Director: David Burris Starring: Noah Wyle, Jeremy Irvine, Minka Kelly, Haley Joel Osment and Adelaide Clemens The tantalizing and superficial emotional and physical landscapes that are initially introduced in any story makes audiences immediately feel as though they truly know all of the emotions, motivations and ideas of all the characters involved. But ‘The World Made Straight,’ the new drama that marks the feature film directorial debut of ‘Survivor’ producer David Burris, and is adapted from Ron Rash’s 2006 novel of the same name, is the perfect example of how initial appearances aren’t always an adequate representation of how people and situations truly are overall. Civil War on Drugs: Burris Turns Southern Gothic into Southern Comfort
Though its title sounds something you’d expect to grace a Christian propaganda film starring Kirk Cameron, the directorial debut by producer David Burris, The World Made Straight, gets drunk on its own solemn resonance and turns its intriguing elements of tragic fate and warps them into eye crossed foolishness. Painstakingly earnest Jeremy Irvine, struggling still to make good on the boost afforded his visibility after 2011’s War Horse, headlines a curious cast assembled atop an organism featuring a number of exciting elements. But this is rather complicated material and is based on Ron Rash’s 2006 novel. A higher degree of finesse could have teased out the tale’s noir roots, as clearly it’s inspired by any number of Elizabethan or Greek tragedy sources, whereby bloodlines are irrevocably cursed by misdeeds of the forefathers.

Do people in the Himalayas and Andes "live in the passive voice," as those in Appalachia do? That loaded question comes early in The World Made Straight, an adaptation of the Ron Rash novel directed by David Burris. That's an intriguing question about life and fate, albeit one this film — about a chance discovery setting off an old vendetta — doesn't fully see through. Burris envisions the region as one of carefully placed bear traps and Civil War ghosts; suffice to say that the wayward Travis (Jeremy Irvine) doesn't know what he's in for when he goes rifling through his family history. Relics of that conflict are literally embedded in the soil, so common that a cheap metal detector used as collateral in a low-level drug deal can sniff them out. As t...

The first trailer for “The World Made Straight” has landed, and it has some surprises for anyone who hasn’t been tracking the film. We also think it promises great soundtrack elements for those of you in love with bluegrass music. (Folk singer-songwriter Steve Earle, who most recently contributed music to an episode of “True Detective,” appears on-screen in the film and sings the opening song in the trailer.) Set in Appalachia and based on the novel by Ron Rash, the film follows a troubled young man trying to escape his hometown’s long history of violence, which dates back to a Civil War massacre. The surprises we’re talking about come mainly in the form of casting. That thin, bearded guy with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth and a pistol in his hand—can you place the face? Yes, you guessed correctly, and don’t worry, it took us a moment,...

Millennium Entertainment is continuing to make moves following its deal to become a stand-alone distribution and catalog company. Today CEO Bill Lee unveiled that the soon-to-be-renamed outfit has closed a senior revolving credit facility and term loan facility worth $40 million.
The facilities helped finance Millennium and Virgo Investment Group’s August buyout of previous owners including Avi Lerner’s Nu Image, and will help Millennium going forward to acquire films for the studio’s upcoming slate. Veteran foreign sales agent Nadine de Barros, financier/producer Daniel Wagner (Kill The Trumpet Player, Young Ones) and producer Robert Ogden Barnum (All Is Lost, Lawless) have partnered to launch Fortitude International, a new sales and financing outfit based in Los Angeles. De Barros will be meeting with film buyers at the upcoming European Film Market at the Berlinale.
De Barros most recently served as Head of Sales at Aldamisa International, and was previously Vice President of Sales and Acquisitions at Voltage Pictures. She has handled sales on such films as Sin City 2, Chef and Machete Kills as well as The Hurt Locker, Don Jon and Killer Joe.
In addition to sales, Fortitude will also fully finance projects, and will be actively looking to produce strong, commercial and director driven material immediately. The company will finance and sell 10-15 movies a year and has at its disposal equity, bridge and senior debt capabilities.

“Through Fortitude International, we have created a company that will provide important services and support not just for our personal slate of films, but to our present and future producing partners as well. I'm excited to partner with such talented and dedicated individuals on this new venture,” said Wagner.
“As financiers, Nadine brings us the international market knowledge that is so imperative to us when evaluating projects. Fortitude will be a haven for filmmakers and artists to make creatively and commercially successful films,” said Barnum.
Wagner’s La-based production and finance company BiFrost Pictures launched last year at Cannes and has recently greenlit high profile projects including the Miles Davis biography Kill The Trumpet Player, which will star and be directed by Don Cheadle. Other recent projects include Lawless, starring Shia Labeouf and Tom Hardy and Chandor’s first film Margin Call, starring Kevin Spacey. Barnum has also served as an executive, overseeing operations and strategy of both Benaroya Pictures and Annapurna Pictures, both major independent film financiers.

About Nadine de Barros and her new venture international sales agent Fortitude International.
Fortitude will also focus on sourcing and financing television series and miniseries.
De Barros has always had a foot in television and previously sold TNT’s Leverage, The Triangle on SyFy, True Justice on Reelz and most recently SAF3.
“I am thrilled to be working with Daniel and Rob as we build Fortitude into a full-service international sales and financing company. I’m also very excited about our forthcoming slate of projects, both film and television series and miniseries,” said de Barros.
Other projects include Jake Paltrow’s Sundance entry Young Ones with Michael Shannon and Nicholas Hoult, Paul Bettany’s directorial debut Shelter starring Jennifer Connelly and Anthony Mackie, the romantic comedy We’LL Never Have Paris from director and star Simon Helberg, and The World Made Straight which stars Noah Wiley, Haley Joel Osment and Minka Kelly.
Robert Ogden Barnum, also a producer on Kill the Trumpet Player and Shelter, is a co-founder of the financing firm e2b Capital with Cassian Elwes, and most recently executive produced All Is Lost starring Robert Redford and directed by Jc Chandor.

Whether the success of “The Woman in Black” was down to it being Daniel Radcliffe’s first big post-'Potter' role or simply a yearning from audiences for old-school chilling horror, it performed well enough at the box office ($127 million worldwide) to justify a sequel. Anyone who saw the first film will know that a direct sequel wouldn’t be the easiest thing to pull off, so “The Woman in Black: Angel of Death” will pick up 40 years later during World War II at Eel Marsh House, and will focus on a new couple being haunted by the titular ghoul. And now it looks like the film has found that young couple. They’ll be played by “War Horse” star Jeremy Irvine, and the considerably less well-known Phoebe Fox. Irvine’s done pretty well for himself since “War Horse,” with leading roles in “Now Is Good” and “Great Expectations,” while...

Following the astounding success of last year’s The Woman in Black, which became something of a sleeper hit around the world for Hammer Films, we first heard late last year that Tom Harper had come on board to direct the sequel, The Woman in Black: Angel of Death.
We saw a pretty snazzy promo poster surface back in November, at which time we were still in the dark about who would be taking the leads this time around in Daniel Radcliffe’s place.
And now Hammer have announced that Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) and Phoebe Fox (Switch) have signed on to take the leads for the sequel, set several decades after the original.
