Christopher Reeve’s biopic “Super/Man” is proving just how super the late actor and activist really was.
IndieWire can confirm that documentary “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story” has officially won the 2024 HamptonsFilm SummerDocs Series’ Audience Award, after screening at the program August 14.
Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui co-direct the documentary, which has been shortlisted by IndieWire as an Oscar frontrunner. “Super/Man” charts Reeve’s astonishing rise from unknown actor to iconic movie star, including his definitive portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman, before being injured in a near-fatal horse-riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed from the neck down, but catalyzed his activism for disability rights.
The feature first screened at Sundance before playing at HamptonsFilm, among other festivals.
For the SummerDocs screening, executive producer Connor Schell and Reeve’s son Will Reeve participated in a Q&a conversation moderated by HamptonsFilm Artistic Director David Nugent and Chairman Emeritus Alec Baldwin.

Santiago, Chile — Climaxing Saturday night with an awards, ceremony, where Santiago Maza and Diego Luna passion project “State of Siege” took top honors, Santiago de Chile’s Sanfic and industry arm Sanfic Industria delivered a vibrant edition, confirming the joint event as one of the three key festival-markets in South America.
This year’s double event also reflects larger change at work coursing through industries in Latin America and much of international. Following, seven takeaways and highlights from the 2024 event, which runs Aug. 18-25 in Santiago de Chile.
Sanfic Still Grows
Other key festivals around Latin America have seen their budgets slashed by governments, though the Rio de Janeiro Film Festival this October and Mexico’s Guadalajara Festival next June could be staging a comeback. Meanwhile, Sanfic and Sanfic Industria have held and indeed grown, recuperating pre-pandemic levels of 40,000 ticket sales by 2023.

“La Isla,” a sci-fi thriller series presented at last year’s Sanfic Series Lab, Conecta Fiction and Iberseries, is kicking off principal photography in October.
Daniela Ramírez, International Emmy-nominated for her performance in HBO Max’s three-part limited series “Isabel: The Intimate Story of Isabel Allende,” is attached to star alongside Néstor Cantillana (“No”).
Penned by Felipe Carmona (“Prison in the Andes”), the six-part series focuses on a dogged detective (Ramírez) who returns to her hometown in the enigmatic Chiloé archipelago to investigate the disappearance of a Mexican archaeology student.
There, she must determine whether the case is a kidnapping or, against all logic, connected to the mythical Friendship Island. According to reports, numerous disappearances, unexplained healings and extraterrestrial activity have occurred there, the synopsis goes.

For Chile’s most celebrated documentarian Maite Alberdi, whose debut fiction pic “El lugar de la otra” vies for the Golden Shell at the 72nd San Sebastian Film Festival (Ssif), venturing into fiction filmmaking posed a number of challenges. But it also had its perks: it took her only a month to shoot the drama while it has taken her an average of five years each time to complete a documentary, two of which, “The Eternal Memory” and “The Mole Agent,” have garnered Oscar nominations.
Recreating ‘50s Santiago for her period film was no mean feat for her art department, led by Pamela Chamorro, given the paucity of buildings dating back from that era. “Earthquakes and the lack of government policies to preserve our architectural heritage, has seen few buildings of past eras still standing in Santiago,” Alberdi told Variety.
Working with a host of actors, numbering around 50, was also a new experience.

Two Netflix Originals and new movies from Mike Leigh, Joshua Oppenheimer, Gia Coppola and Edward Berger will vie for San Sebastian’s top Golden Shell this September.
The festival features a main competition that is stronger than usual on both bigger-name directors and ‘A’ list stars, such as Tilda Swinton in Oppenheimer’s “The End,” Jamie Lee Curtis and Pamela Anderson in Gia Coppola’s “The Last Showgirl” and the ensemble cast of Berger’s “Conclave” that includes Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci and Isabella Rossellini.
Bound for Toronto and Telluride before San Sebastián, Oppenheimer’s “The End” stars Swinton, George MacKay and Michael Shannon in what is described as a post-apocalyptic “Golden Age” musical.
“Conclave,” from “All Quiet on the Western Front director Edward Berger,” is a psychological thriller written by Peter Straughan, based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Robert Harris and starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci and John Lithgow.

Founded in 2007 by nonfiction filmmaker, writer, and visual artist Aj Schnack, Cinema Eye began as an awards event for documentary films, but by 2010, had blossomed into a multi-day celebration of the form, paying tribute to each year’s new class of nominees, as well as the influences that shaped them all. They were the first and remain the only international nonfiction awards organization to recognize the entire creative team, presenting awards for directing, editing, producing, cinematography, original score, visual design, and sound design, as well as non-competitive Honors for onscreen participants.
Doubling down on their commitment to recognizing all creative team members, starting in the year 2025, the named nominees for Cinema Eye’s highest honor, Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Feature Filmmaking, will include the films’ directors, producers, editors, cinematographers, composers, sound and visual designers, as well as the primary onscreen participants. With Maite Alberdi, twice Oscar nominated for her last two docus, “The Eternal Memory” and “The Mole Agent,” and Tana Gilbert whose feature debut “Malqueridas” won the Grand Prize at Venice’s Critics’ Week, Chilean documentaries are having a banner year.
Five documentaries participate in the May 20 Chilean Docs-in-Progress Showcase at the Marché du Film’s docu section, Cannes Docs.
Moreover, a delegation of some 15 other Chilean documentary filmmakers have swept into town with their respective projects, with themes ranging from gender issues, Indigenous peoples, climate change, teenage suicide and even, true crime.
“Chilean documentaries today touch on more universal themes, they are not so inward-looking,” Chiledoc director Paula Ossandon told Variety.
One of them, “Oasis,” has been picked up by Argentina’s Compañía de Cine to handle its international sales. Created by the Mafi filmmakers collective, this feature doc, which premiered at Berlinale, explores Chile’s failed attempt to...

“The Hyperboreans,” the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight entry from Chile, defines the inventive works that have emerged from this small nation. Many of its films touch on traumatic national events of the past but play with rarely explored genres in the region. Case in point: the country’s recent Oscar submission, “The Settlers,” about Chile’s bloody colonial 1901 battle in its south, is a neo-Western.
Helmed by animation mavens Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña, “The Hyperboreans” (“Los Hiperbóreos”) combines live action and stop-motion animation in a story that also stands out for its singularity. In it, Chilean actress and psychologist Antonia Giesen films a script from her patient’s mind, leading to a reality-bending spiral when she discovers it originates from Nazi poet Miguel Serrano.
“We planned this as an exhibition of the filming process at an art gallery in Chile, so we filmed this in a single space and with only one actress,...

MTV Documentary Films has acquired U.S. rights to Shiori Ito’s “Black Box Diaries.”
The docu, about the investigation of the director’s own alleged sexual assault, debuted in the World Cinema Documentary Competition at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and has been an audience favorite at this year’s Cph:dox, South by Southwest and Hot Docs film festivals.
MTV will theatrically release “Black Box Diaries” this fall, beginning in October at New York’s Film Forum. The film will be qualified for awards consideration before streaming on Paramount+ for subscribers with the Showtime plan later this year. Last year, the division released two Oscar nominated docs — Maite Alberdi’s feature length “The Eternal Memory” and Sheila Nevin’s short titled “The ABCs of Book Banning.”

Maite Alberdi made history when she became the first Chilean woman to be nominated for an Oscar thanks to her 2021 documentary The Mole Agent. She repeated the distinction earlier this year when her latest doc, The Eternal Memory, competed for an Academy Award in a stacked category that ultimately went to 20 Days in Mariupol.
It was the latest distinction in a long list for Alberdi, who previously directed critically acclaimed feature docs like 2014’s La Once and 2016’s The Grown-Ups. But even with all of that success, Alberdi says people still ask her shocking questions about her résumé. “I just received a question, ‘When are you going to make a film?’ And it’s like, I make films,” Alberdi told The Hollywood Reporter recently during a sit-down interview at Xcaret in Riviera Maya, Mexico, ahead of the Platino Awards. The assumption is that documentaries are not “real films,” according to these ill-informed commenters.

The Peabody Board of Jurors released the rest of the 2024 Peabody Awards nominees today and the results were somewhat surprising. Comprising the Arts, Children’s/Youth, Entertainment, Interactive, and Immersive categories, the list of honorees included anticipated programs such as “The Last of Us,” “The Bear” and “Bluey.” What was something of a shock was a snub of the critically acclaimed and awards favorite, “Beef.”

PBS landed 11 nominations, by far the most of any outlet, as Peabody Awards Board of Jurors announced this year’s 41 nominees across its documentary, news, public service and radio/podcast categories. The pubcaster’s Peabody noms include “20 Days in Mariupol,” which recently won the Oscar for best documentary feature film.
“20 Days in Mariupol” is a production of “Frontline” and the Associated Press. Among PBS series, “Frontline” landed five noms, the most of any program, while “Independent Lens” received three.
Also scoring multiple nominations was the combination of HBO and Max, which received four — including one for the doc “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,” which HBO Documentary Films produced with Neon and Participant. That’s notable in light of last week’s news that Participant Media is shutting its operations.

J.A. Bayona’s Netflix epic Society of the Snow swept Saturday night’s Platino Awards, picking up a total of six trophies including the top award of the night for best Ibero-American fiction film.
Bayona’s film follows the tragic events that take place after Uruguayan Air Force flight 571, chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile, crashes on a glacier in the heart of the Andes in 1972. Only 16 of the 45 passengers ultimately made it out alive as a handful of others perished on the mountain during the 72 days from the time of the crash until rescuers arrived.
Bayona also made his way to the stage to accept a trophy for best director, and his film’s haul also included best male performance for star Enzo Vogrincic, best editing for Jaume Marti and Andres Gil, best cinematography for Pedro Luque, and best sound for Oriol Tarragó, Marc Orts and Jorge Adrados.

The Mexican award show took place this year at the El Gran Tlachco theater in Xcaret Park, Riviera Maya. Bayona took best director on the night for Society Of The Snow. The film also won Best Feature while 20,000 Species Of Bees nabbed Best Screenplay and Best First Feature.
20,000 Species Of Bees debuted at the Berlin Film Festival, where lead actor Sofía Otero took the silver bear for best leading performance. In a triumphant night for Spain, J.A. Bayona’s Oscar-nominated “Society of the Snow” swept the top prizes at Platino Xcaret, named after the venue of the annual Platino Awards this year, which took place at the Xcaret Park, Riviera Maya, Mexico.
Argentina cinema’s plight, exacerbated by far-right president Javier Milei’s closure of its film institute, Incaa, was also on many people’s minds.
Citing veteran Argentine filmmaker Adolfo Aristarain as one of his inspirations, Bayona said upon receiving his best director award: “Argentina, we are here standing by your side, you’re not alone.”

Fremantle has renewed its first-look partnership with Chilean production company Fabula in a deal that will see the companies develop a slate of original dramas and films. Fremantle’s international sales wing, Fmi, will distribute the drama projects worldwide.
Fabula and Fremantle have just wrapped production on Sebabstián Lelio’s film musical The Wave, in partnership with Participant Media, which tells the story of the mass protests and university rallies that took place during Chile’s so-called “feminist May” in 2018.
Later this year they will launch Pablo Larraín’s Maria starring Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas, produced alongside Fremantle and Germany’s Komplizen Film.

20 Days in Mariupol won best documentary at the 2024 Oscars, with director Mstyslav Chernov celebrating what he said is the first Oscar win for Ukraine while also acknowledging his wish to have never made his documentary in the first place.
“I am honored but probably I will be the first director on this stage to say I wish I never made this film. I wish to be able to exchange this for Russia never attacking Ukraine and never occupying our cities,” said Chernov. “I would give up all the recognition for Russia not killing tens of thousands of my fellow Ukrainians. I wish for them to release all the hostages, all of the soldiers who are protecting their lands, all of the civilians who are now in their jails. But I can’t change history; I cannot change the past.”

I wish for them to release all the hostages, all of the soldiers who are protecting their lands, all of the civilians who are now in their jails. But I can’t change history; I cannot change the past.”

In one of the most competitive races in years, 20 Days in Mariupol won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature tonight, earning director Mstyslav Chernov an Academy Award to go with a Pulitzer Prize.
The film from the Associated Press, PBS’ Frontline and GBH came into the night a slight favorite but faced a tough test from fellow nominees Bobi Wine: The People’s President, The Eternal Memory, Four Daughters, and To Kill a Tiger. The documentary, which premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, centers on the harrowing siege of the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol in the early days of Russia’s full-scale invasion of the country. Thousands of civilians were killed in Russia’s assault.
On the Osar stage, Chernov, a native of the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, thanked his collaborators and said, “This is the first Oscar in the Ukrainian history. And I’m honored.” But with rising emotion,...

Despite two historic strikes, shifting release schedules, and the ongoing risk of coronavirus, Hollywood had a lot to celebrate at tonight’s 96th Academy Awards. If there was a message to take away from this year’s awards season, it’s that 2023 was a very good year for movies.
