In mythology, Ganymede was a young man who was so stunningly handsome Zeus had an eagle abduct him and bring him to Olympus to serve as cupbearer to the gods. And, of course, as one of his lovers. In the here and now, Ganymede is the new film from Colby Holt and his partner Sam Probst who previously collaborated on Pig Hag. The film is based in part on their own experiences. I’m assuming they mean growing up LGBTQ in deep South fundamentalist Christian families, not being stalked by something from beyond the grave.
While there are no monsters in the film’s opening scene, it’s certainly ominous enough. A man sits, finishing his cigarette before...

StudioCanal is teaming up with French production outfit WTFilms on a slate of European genre films.
The agreement will see StudioCanal and WTFilms collaborate in the development, production and distribution of action, thriller, science fiction and horror movie over a period of at least two years.
StudioCanal will act as a co-producer and distributor for WTFilms projects selected during that time.
The new collobration sprang from StudioCanal’s successful partnership with WTFilms on Xavier Gens’ action thriller Mayhem!, which was a fantasy festivals hit last year and was picked up by IFC Films for the U.S.
“The success of Mayhem! reinforced our choice to focus our production projects on genre, ranging from action to thriller and horror,” said WTFilms co-founders Dimitri Stephanides and Gregory Chambet. “Since its beginning, the DNA of WTFilms has been closely linked to our personal taste for this cinema. The definition of satire is flexible, but not quite flexible enough to accommodate “Krazy House.” This bloody, anarchic hand grenade of a film is just straight-up blasphemous, opening with a brushed-aluminum shot of a cop plugging a nun full of bullets and escalating from there. Like an Adult Swim infomercial directed by black-metal teenagers, the latest feature from Dutch comedy duo Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil takes sneering pleasure in giving the middle finger to God in hyper-violent, absurdist fashion.
The Adult Swim bit is baked into the premise of the movie, which takes place entirely within the confines of a sound stage reminiscent of the set from “Married…With Children.” The sitcom-within-the-film is called, naturally, “Krazy House.” It revolves around the Christian family, which is composed of standard-issue archetypes: bucktoothed bumbler Bernie (Nick Frost); his wife Eva (Alicia Silverstone), who’s naturally way out of his league...

Founded in 2012, Paris-based WTFilms, run by Gregory Chambet and Dimitri Stephanides, has built a strong reputation as a sales agent for break-out genre pics and has recently diversified into production, to access hit projects. As competition ramps up for more ambitious projects with strong theatrical potential, Chambet decided to move to Los Angeles in mid-2023, while Stephanides remains based in Paris.
“At WTFilms, we aim to continue to work on both sides of the Atlantic,” explains Chambet. “In the current market it’s important to invest in projects by talented directors, with innovative concepts, budgeted above $5 million. It makes sense for me to be based here because we work a lot with partners here and L.A. is a key talent hub. We’re on the lookout for talent from all around the world. There are really exciting genre directors popping up everywhere – in North America and also in Latin America and Asia.

With an output of three feature films in just four years and several short films in-between, a purveyor in Feminist horror cinema genre, American independent filmmaker Jennifer Reeder tackles womanhood, sisterhood and family in Perpetrator. Delving into our fixation of young bodies and how society is quick to exploit, dismantle and to an extreme destroy them, we have shapeshifter underworlds, siphoning of fluids, and the blood motif here is strong. A film about taking back the power and one’s agency, this is an ode to retro and recent classics such as De Palma’s Carrie to Ducournau’s Raw. Released in the Panorama section at the Berlinale with fest stops at Tribeca, Karlovy Vary and a Shudder release on September 1st, the film is still traveling the fest circuit.…...

The leaves are changing and pumpkin spice is on tap, which can only mean one thing: fall is upon us — and with it a bevy of movies that could very well influence this year’s Oscar race and end-of-year lists.
In spite of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA/WGA strike, movies are still coming out. But it will be interesting to see how the dual strike affects promotion, box office and this year’s Oscars race. Regardless, there’s something for everyone. Big awards heavy-hitters like “Maestro” and “Saltburn” will be on film buffs most anticipated lists, while blockbusters like “The Creator” and “Saw X” will charm those just looking for a good time at the movies.
Here are the 30 films TheWrap’s film team is excited to see this fall.

The Venice and Telluride film festivals are kicking off Oscar season this week, which means the good stuff is finally on its way. Unfortunately, the streaming offerings over Labor Day weekend aren’t particularly robust. But there are a few titles worth checking out as summer fades away.
The contender to watch this week: “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”
The first three “Indiana Jones” movies earned a collective 13 Oscar nominations, and while the franchise’s long-gestating final installment saw lukewarm reception, it could still be a below-the-line contender — especially with fall blockbusters like “Dune: Part Two” being delayed to 2024. Anytime John Williams‘ name appears in the credits, there are awards chances in the offing. Catch Harrison Ford‘s Indy swan song on VOD. It’ll stream on Disney+ later this year.
Other contenders to watch:

Four years after exploring the interwoven horrors of adolescence and parenthood in the bold neo-noir Knives and Skin (the film's solemn cover of the Go-Go's "Our Lips Are Sealed" is still one of the most memorable scenes I've watched in the past decade), filmmaker Jennifer Reeder returns to the haunted halls of high school to expose more societal injustices, toxic masculinity, and timely anxieties in Perpetrator.
Centered on teenager Jonny Baptiste (Kiah McKirnan), who is teetering on the verge of adulthood as she grapples with her unique shapeshifting ability with a little unconventional help from her stern-yet-caring Aunt Hildie (Alicia Silverstone), Perpetrator is now streaming on Shudder and playing theatrically in New York.

Yes, it’s getting darker a bit earlier and the temps are finally (whew) easing up and cooling off. So many folks are thinking of Fall, and aside from sweaters and pumpkin spice everything, Halloween is on their minds (and in the aisles of several retail chains). And we’re ready for some good scary flicks, and not family-friendly fare like the failed reboot of Haunted Mansion. Now we’ve already hit the high seas with Dracula, maybe we could get a modern twist on the classic monster folklore. Is the setting for this flick another rotting ship or a decaying estate or castle? Nope, it’s a locale even more frightening, high school (Carrie White and Buffy Summers would heartily agree). And the villain? For this gory lil’ indie, it’s not clear exactly who or what is the actual Perpetrator.
Could it be nearly eighteen-year-old Jonny (Kiah McKirnan)? After all,...

While our massive, 60-film fall movie preview gives a hint at what to expect this season, it’s time to dive deeper into September. With films from Ethan Coen, Yorgos Lanthimos, and Luca Guadagnino being ripped off the month’s release calendar because studios don’t want to pay actors and writers fairly, it means the fall’s first offerings are a bit lighter––thankfully giving some truly independent productions further room to shine.

Jennifer and I have spoken a couple of times in the past, about Knives And Skin and Night’s End, both times at busy festivals. This time things are a little more relaxed. Review: Female empowerment has never been as prevalent in horror as it has been over the last twenty years. Writer-director Jennifer Reeder’s Perpetrator cycles through characters and settings at a considerable clip, never stopping long enough to flesh them out beyond an outline. First, in a pre-credits teaser, a masked serial killer abducts a girl walking alone at night. The film then cuts to protagonist Jonny (Kiah McKirnan) breaking into a house before fencing the stolen goods for rent money that she gives to her ailing father (Tim Hopper).
Across this opening stretch of the film, the audience watches Jonny in this setting just long enough to sense her ennui—that she’s desperate to flee her dead-end life. Soon enough, she’s on a train and getting out of Dodge, on her way to live with her aunt Hildie (Alicia Silverstone). And it’s then that she starts to develop strange abilities that directly channel the feelings of the people around her—as well as those of...

Lately, when Jonny Baptiste (Kiah McKirnan) looks in the mirror, she doesn’t even recognize herself… because her face is morphing into someone else. But, as Jonny’s enigmatic Aunt Hildie (Alicia Silverstone) reminds her, this is just one of the side effects of Jonny celebrating her recent 18th birthday and receiving the unconventional gift of Forevering, a family spell that gives Jonny the unique ability of extreme empathy that allows her to tap into the emotions of those around her—a power that’s also wielded by both Aunt Hildie and Jonny’s mother, who disappeared out of Jonny’s life long ago. As Jonny gets used to her new high school run by the misogynistic Principal Burke (Christopher Lowell), she learns that being bestowed with Forevering is both a blessing and a curse, but it just might be the only thing that can stop a masked killer who...

Jennifer Reeder's "Perpetrator" is a spiritual successor to 2019's John Waters-y, super-sensory-heightened debut "Knives and Skin," serving vibes as a main course. That's not entirely a damning accusation. Reeder's style provokes delirium and allows her characters to float through hallucinogenic universes, which the filmmaker somehow controls. "Perpetrator" feels indebted to everything from high school humor in "Clueless" to body horror yuckiness in "Society" to uniquely pubescent terror in "Teeth" — a tonal collision that some won't survive, and others will slurp down like Four Lokos at an underage pregame.

The inaugural Hudson Film Festival in Hudson, NY will premiere the 20th anniversary remastered edition of Park Chan-wook’s classic film “Oldboy” this August. In partnership with Neon, the premiere will be in advance of the film’s theatrical re-release on Aug. 16.
Founded by John Maybee, Sarah Peters, and Sonia Marcela Freeman, the festival will take place Aug. 11-13; their website states that the festival “serves as a platform to champion and showcase underrepresented local and global films, filmmakers, artisans and talent.”
The festival co-founders said in a joint statement, “As devotees of Director Park and Neon, we are ecstatic and honored to have been chosen as the only festival to screen ‘Oldboy’ prior to its 20th Anniversary theatrical relaunch.”
“Oldboy,” released in 2003, is a South Korean neo-noir thriller about a man named Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) who attempts to exact revenge on his captor after being mysteriously held prisoner for 15 years.

We're big fans of Jennifer Reeder in these parts, and we've been watching her new film Perpetrator makes the festivals rounds from Berlinale to Tribeca to Neuchâtel, with great anticipation. Reeder seems to be makig the rounds again with high school girls (which she did so brilliantly in Knives & Skin), while bringing us the wonderful Alicia Silverstone (whom perhaps will now be convinced to be in more horror films?) A new trailer and poster have dropped, giving us some glimpses of a story that seems dripping with supernatural powers, family ties, rivalries, and blood. We can't wait. Jonny Baptiste (Kiah McKirnan) is a reckless teen sent to live with her estranged Aunt Hildie (Alicia Silverstone). On her 18th birthday, she experiences a radical metamorphosis:...

Jennifer Reeder’s follow-up as a writer-director to her 2019 feature debut Knives and Skin, the first trailer arrives today for Perpetrator. The film had its world premiere at this year’s Berlinale before having its North American premiere at Tribeca Festival earlier this summer. In my interview with Reeder ahead of Berlinale ’23, I briefly elaborate on the film’s premise: Precocious 17-year-old Jonny (Kiah McKirnan) has a no-frills home life with her deadbeat father, supported by her after school hustle as a petty thief. Her mother has long been out of the picture, only exacerbating her feeling of isolation when she […]

The Fantasia International Film Festival is back for its 27th annual edition, running July 20 through August 9, and it’s bringing one of Hollywood’s biggest stars––in spirit now; he’s officially canceled so as to not cross the picket line of the current SAG-AFTRA strike––to Montreal with a world premiere and career recognition. Nicolas Cage, his new film Sympathy for the Devil, and his Cheval Noir Career Achievement Award aren’t the only draw for this three-week event, though.

Alicia Silverstone isn’t shutting the door on the Dcu.
Twenty-six years after she played Batgirl in 1997’s “Batman and Robin,” the “Clueless” icon told IndieWire that she is open to reprising the role.
“If somebody wants me to play Batgirl, and they’re incredible, I’m in,” Silverstone told IndieWire during the Tribeca Film Festival while promoting horror film “Perpetrator.”
Writer-director Jennifer Reeder added, “I’m not done with her, now that I’ve got her close. I keep promising to make more films with her, which we will absolutely do. Maybe ‘Batgirl.'”
Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck appear as two versions of Batman in the upcoming multiverse movie “The Flash,” opening the door to numerous iterations of the same characters. George Clooney portrayed the Caped Crusader opposite Silverstone in “Batman and Robin,” directed by Joel Schumacher. A “Flash” sequel is rumored to be in the works.

Brit actress Melanie Liburd has been cast in Columbia Pictures’ upcoming fourth Bad Boys title in what The Hollywood Reporter understands is a leading role.
The as-yet-untitled movie — which reunites stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence with their Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah — is currently in production (Smith and Lawrence spoke to CinemaCon from the set in Atlanta via a taped message during Sony’s opening night presentation Monday). Liburd joins the film as a character called Christine.
The movie — the next instalment in a Bad Boys franchise that has so far amassed more than $840 million across three titles ($426 million from the third film alone) — is the latest significant credit on a growing résumé for Liburd, who had a major role in the third season of This Is Us and first and second seasons of Power Book II: Ghost. Moody, hysterical, hyper-emotional, or just plain over-sensitive: what if being too much could also be your superpower? Perpetrator (2023), Jennifer Reeder’s blood-slicked supernatural noir, which premiered in this year's Panorama section at the Berlinale, takes this premise as the springboard for its snaking tale of adolescent metamorphosis and missing high school girls. Reinvigorating the creaky tropes of genre filmmaking after a successful career in the art world, Reeder parses her politics of feminist empathy and patriarchal critique through the visual motifs of body horror and the gothic, bringing to Perpetrator a playful and shape-shifting allegorical twist. Wild child Jonny Baptiste (Kiah McKirnan) is an out-of-control teenager and petty thief whose body is changing in all the wrong ways. Her single, ailing father sends her off to the Victorian mansion of an isolated aunt Hildie—played, in an inventive choice of casting, by the ’90s icon and Clueless star Alicia Silverstone.

“I have no shame saying that on some level, I’ve kind of been making the same film over and over,” writer-director Jennifer Reeder tells me on a recent Zoom call. We’re speaking ahead of the Berlinale premiere of Perpetrator, the anticipated follow-up to her 2019 feature debut Knives and Skin, a horror-tinged teen noir that centers on the disappearance of a high school-aged girl and the reckoning that it brings to a Midwestern town’s inhabitants, particularly the girl’s mother and her teenage friend group.
