A Bit Silly But Engaging
Theo Robertson9 August 2013
Dr Robert Middling is a dentist and one day he is surprised to find a pirate in his surgery . The pirate is suffering from toothache and Dr Robert tells him he'll have to extract the tooth but the pirate warns him he will not be having an injection by a needle under any circumstances which is going to make the extraction very difficult

Another short film starring Kevin Spacey , this time a broad comedy featuring a pirate . I should hasten to add this involves the pirates of legend immortalised by the likes of Robert Louis Stevenson and not modern day pirates who are tall , skinny , black and live in the horn of Africa , this is old school piracy of olde with cries of " oo ar Jim lad " not to be taken too seriously

One slight problem is that the comedy is a little bit forced . The pirate doesn't like needles and the plotting revolves around the dilemma of how does Dr Robert take out a rotting tooth from a violent dangerous patient ? Everything is played strictly for laughs and it does descend in to silly farce at some points but that's its nature and for a short film is engaging

Just too absurd for my taste

Warning: Spoilers
In Alan Shelley's 9-minute short film "Spirit of a Denture" from 2012, we see Kevin Spacey as a dentist who ends up with the difficult task of having to get an aching tooth out of a needle-afraid pirate's mouth ( Brian Thompson). Even if the acting was not too bad here, the story was simply so strange and nonsensical that I cannot really recommend this movie. What happens after the doc successfully managed his job, is fairly predictable and I did not really find it funny. Apart from that, the ending credits could have rolled in the very moment he spotted all the other pirates. This way it was just a prolonged joke which wasn't very funny initially. The whole brawling and fighting with the original pirate was not as entertaining to me as I wished it could have been. Certainly one of the weaker Jameson First Shots.
