Always a feast for the film lover (especially the lover of African cinema), the lineup for the 2015 edition of the New York African Film Festival (Nyaff), which will run from May 6 - 12, announced a couple of weeks ago, includes a few titles you'll recognize like the opening night film - the South African crime drama "Cold Harbour" by Carey McKenzie. Previously titled "Black South-Easter," "Cold Harbour" is a South African crime thriller starring Tony Kgoroge, Fana Mokoena (maybe the most recognizable to USA audiences), Yu Nan, Deon Lotz, Thomas Gumede and Zolani Mahola. It's directed by Carey McKenzie, and produced by Tendeka Matatu. ...

I'm really appreciating the wave of black South African *genre* films we've seen in recent years, from "How To Steal 2 Million," to today's feature, "Cold Harbour," and everything we've covered between the two. Carey McKenzie's Cold Harbour won a glowing review from our own Stuart Muller after its world premiere in Durban and if you're wondering why ... well, the first trailer below should give you a solid indication. Here's how the festival describes the film:When a body washes up on a beach in what looks like a gang-related turf-war murder, Khayelitsha policeman Sizwe Mia sees his chance to make detective. But the deeper he digs, the thicker the conspiracy. Unsure of who to trust, Sizwe must fight to stay on the right side of a law he believes in and maintain his integrity in a world that does not reward it. Atmospherically shot, Cold Harbour is a bleak crime drama rooted in the moral ambiguities of crime,...

Another South African film at the Durban International Film Festival (Diff) brings another challenging reflection on the country's modern identity. This time, it's Carey McKenzie tackling corruption with her moody and noirish crime thriller, Cold Harbour, which just had its world premiere at Diff. This is McKenzie's first fiction feature film, her previous major production being an award-winning documentary, Original Child Bomb, which took the Grand Jury Prize at Silverdocs and Bologna Human Rights Nights. An associated short film, B Is For Bomb, won the Cannes 2006 Short Film Corner competition. After watching Cold Harbour I'm not surprised to learn that McKenzie has a documentary background; though fictional, the film deals very forthrightly, and even-handedly, with the complex reality of corruption in South Africa. Her empathy for, and dedication...

Just as they did last year, South Africa's National Film and Video Foundation (Nfvf) will once again take a delegation of films and filmmakers to the Cannes International Film Festival, which takes place later this month - from the 15th until the 26th of May. The goal here is to demonstrate that South African cinema can compete on the international stage, and show that stories by South African filmmakers can resonate in the international cinema market place. One of the films that will be presented this year is a crime thriller titled Black South-Easter, starring Tony Kgoroge, Fana Mokoena, Yu Nan, Deon Lotz, Thomas...

I'm appreciating the wave of black South African genre films we've seen in recent years, from How To Steal 2 Million to today's feature, Black South-Easter, which like the former is also a crime thriller, and everything else between. Black South-Easter is an upcoming South African crime thriller starring Tony Kgoroge, Fana Mokoena, Yu Nan, Deon Lotz, Thomas Gumede and Zolani Mahola, directed by Carey McKenzie and produced by Tendeka Matatu. Here's its synopsis: As the annual “Black South-Easters” blow dark clouds over Table Mountain, bringing storms to Cape Town, the ill winds of corruption blow through the city’s townships. In a...
