Exclusive: Jane Goodall is one of the world’s most renowned conservationists and foremost experts on chimpanzees. Her life’s work has been spreading knowledge about animals and the natural world, challenging what was historically a male-dominated scientific establishment along the way. Goodall’s work has drawn her admiration and respect from all corners, including from Leonardo DiCaprio, with whom she is an executive producer on upcoming film Howl.
The live-action movie will tell the story of a dog and wolf’s joint battle for survival. It is the first picture from Promethean Pictures, the label created by Argo Films’ Richard Johns and E. Elias Merhige (Shadow of the Vampire). Merhige is directing from Christopher Monger’s (Temple Grandin) screenplay

Florence and the Machine is remembering its first album — but backed by an orchestra! Last night, Florence Welch was joined by the BBC Orchestra for a symphonic reimagining of the group’s debut album, Lungs.
The show, called “Symphony of Lungs,” was part of BBC Proms and saw Welch sing the 2009 album in its entirety from Royal Albert Hall for her only full concert of the year.
“This was an album created with so much feeling,” she told the crowd. “I never thought anyone could add more feeling to it.

As someone who hasn't been shy about sharing my undying love for the 2008 zombie horror comedy Dance of the Dead over the years, (I even had the pleasure of helping host 10th anniversary screenings for the film back in 2018), I'm always stoked to see what director Gregg Bishop is working on, so I'm especially thrilled and chilled that Bishop's new short film, Howl at the Dead, will have its Canadian premiere tonight at the Fantasia International Film Festival!
A haunted house short film told from the unique perspective of family pets, Howl at the Dead will screen tonight at Montreal's De Sève Theatre as part of the “Are You Afraid of Fantasia?” program at 9:30pm.
Below, we have the official press release with additional details, and to celebrate the short film's Canadian premiere, we also have a look at images from Howl at the Dead (and eagle-eyed Dance of the Dead...

Exclusive: Leonardo DiCaprio and revered environmental activist Jane Goodall will executive produce Howl, a film following an abandoned family dog and a young wolf, which will unfold from the animals’ perspective. The Promethean Pictures movie has just entered production, we can reveal. It is not an environment film per se, but the team behind it plans to give moviegoers a transformative view of the natural world.
Set against the backdrop of a harsh winter, the movie will follow Harry, a family dog who is inadvertently left home alone and whose owners then die in an accident. Harry goes through a rollercoaster survival ride that brings him into contact with a wolf. The pair must overcome their mutual fear and suspicion, and ultimately they develop a close bond. The story is animal-led, but there will be some human characters with casting news to follow.

Elden Ring was released in 2022 but is still relevant almost two years later. While some credit can be given to the game’s first expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, the game’s cult status is to be credited for keeping it relevant in 2024, too.
Since it is a Soulsborne RPG, character builds for one’s main character are essential. As the Tarnished gathers and gears up for Shadow of the Erdtree, ensuring their build is as relevant to the current scenario as possible will set them up for success. These are the top five builds to prepare for the game’s first significant expansion.

Allen Ginsberg initially thought The Beatles were naive when he first met them. However, he soon learned that they were innovators and artists like him.
The Beatles | Central Press/Getty Images Allen Ginsberg thought The Beatles were naive when he first met them
In Martin Scorsese’s 2005 documentary No Direction Home (per Ginsberg’s website), Ginsberg explained the first time he met The Beatles. He said he’d just been kicked out of Cuba “for talking privately about Castro’s persecution of gay people.” Then, he went to Czechoslovakia but they also kicked him out a week later. They deported him to London around the time of Bob Dylan’s concerts at the Royal Albert Hall.
There was a “very exciting scene back in the hotel,” and Dylan was down the hall with The Beatles. Ginsberg said he received a message that he should come down the hall to meet them all.

Exclusive: Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds), Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix franchise), Isabelle Fuhrman (The Novice) and Liana Liberato (To the Bone) have signed on to star in Justine Bateman’s upcoming feature Face, based on her 2021 bestseller, Face: One Square Foot of Skin.
The film penned by Bateman consists of 14 vignettes, both comedic and dramatic, which look at women’s faces getting older, and why that makes people angry. While much of society appears to assume that women’s faces are somehow broken and need to be fixed, Face reveals some of the many ways in which women, and those around them, allow this idea to take root at all.
Parker will play Tanya, an actress balancing her need to use her face for her job and the pressure to not move it at all, with Moss as Mrs. Foster, a kindergarten teacher whose young students remind her of the magical functionality of the face.

Executive produced by Martin Scorsese, Belgian filmmakers Maya Duverdier and Amélie van Elmbt’s documentary, Dreaming Walls: Inside the Chelsea Hotel, is a deeply moving spiritual deconstruction of a cultural landmark. The directors trust the viewer to know the history going in, allowing Dreaming Walls to capture the mood of the Chelsea.
New York City’s Hotel Chelsea opened on 23rd St. in 1884. Its 12 stories of brick housed some of the greatest names across all the arts. Oscar Wilde and Mark Twain were among the earliest check-ins. Madonna planned her global domination, and later shot photographs for her book, Sex, on the eighth floor. Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey shot Chelsea Girls (1966) in the rooms the Factory members lived. Arthur C. Clarke wrote the screen treatment for 2001: A Space Odyssey in its rooms. Marilyn Monroe lived at the Chelsea as a young actor, and Arthur Miller stayed there after their much-later divorce.

Ahead of Horror Channel’s UK TV Premiere of Peripheral, director Paul Hyett talks about directorial ambitions, twisted technology, and why aliens aren’t interested in us.
How did you become attached to Peripheral?
The producer Craig Touhy and I had been friends for a while and we’d nearly done another movie together. He’d liked the claustrophobia and tension of The Seasoning House so we met up to discuss Peripheral. When he pitched it to me, very much a low budget, contained movie, in one apartment. Exclusive: Deadline has the first exclusive track from Carter Burwell’s Oscar-shortlisted score for The Tragedy of Macbeth, which is set for release tomorrow via Milan Records, as the film from director Joel Coen premieres globally on Apple TV+.
Coen’s take on William Shakespeare’s classic 17th century play Macbeth watches as Denzel Washington’s Scottish lord is convinced by a trio of witches that he will become the next King of Scotland, subsequently conspiring to seize power with the help of his wife, Lady Macbeth (Frances McDormand).
It’s the latest project to emerge from a career-spanning partnership between Burwell and Coen, dating back to 1984, which has seen the former score almost all of the latter’s films including Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men and True Grit.

Granaz Moussavi’s When Pomegranates Howl has been put forward as Australia’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film at the 2022 Academy Awards.
Shot in Afghanistan, the film follows nine-year-old Hewad (Arafat Faiz), who hustles on the streets of Kabul but dreams of stardom. When an Australian photojournalist befriends him and starts documenting his life in order to create an empathetic depiction of children in a war-torn society, Heward is hopeful that his luck may finally be changing.
Written and directed by Moussavi, the Australian/Afghanistan co-production was produced by Parvin Productions, in association with Sterga Productions, with additional financial assistance from the Adelaide Film Festival Investment Fund and the South Australian Film Corporation, as well as support from the Netherlands Embassy, Kabul.
Moussavi also produces alongside Baheer Wardak, Christine Williams and Marzieh Vafamehr, with Shaun Miller serving as executive producer.

Writer-director Granaz Moussavi’s second feature When Pomegranates Howl follows Hewad, a nine-year-old boy who supports his family by selling goods from a cart on the harsh streets of Kabul after the death of his father. At home he is also facing the challenge of the forced marriage of his mother to his uncle. He dreams of escaping his war torn poverty existence by becoming a rich and famous actor, taking care of his mum himself and buying his family a fancy new house.
An Australian photojournalist befriends Hewad and starts documenting his life in order to depict an empathetic image of the children of this war-torn society. Inspired by this, Hewad sets out to enlist his friends to help create an imaginary Hollywood style action film. While he and his friends are playing war games on the streets as an audition for the film, tragedy strikes.

“Akira” – repeatedly claimed as one of the greatest anime films of all time – has done little to support the sales of its followup film, “Steamboy.” Katsuhiro Otomo’s equally monumental second feature doubly hit the books as one of the most expensive animated movies made to date. With a budget of 2.4 billion Yen ($26 million Usd), this ambitious production cost over 180,000 drawings, 440 CG cuts, and around ten years of production for a 2-hour production.
Needless to say, it was epic.
Like “Akira,” “Steamboy” tells another cautionary tale of mass destruction. This time, however, the film takes place in Britain at the peak of the Victorian era. Here, the film begins at the heart of the Industrial Revolution: Manchester. The film opens when the 13-year-old James Ray Steam (Anne Suzuki) receives a mysterious package from his grandfather. Apparently, an accompanying letter says, this unwieldy contraption is a “steam ball...

Are We Monsters is an intriguing title and one that drew me into the movie before I knew anything else about it…. The film sees werewolf hunters trying to find other ways to control the werewolf population with the final silver bullets all used up. Meanwhile a young female werewolf, Maya, is trying to understand herself, her history and her possible future before time runs out.
I have to admit that I’m not the biggest werewolf movie fan. That’s not to say I don’t like them, there have of course been plenty of good movies about them. Dog Soldiers, An American Werewolf In London, The Howling, The Wolf Man and Howl are just a few from the genre that I have very much enjoyed.

Before “Earwig and the Witch”’s release, its press excitement seemed to build over the years. The film represents Studio Ghibli’s first foray into 3D CGI animation; furthermore, it signifies Goro Miyazaki’s own directorial debut, marking a significant departure from his father’s (Hayao Miyazaki) strictly traditional ways. Its release also promised glamor: with a premiere plan at Cannes 2020 and a star-studded English dub cast (including pop-country cameo Kacey Musgraves!), the film’s PR team seemed to tie all its loose ends together. In retrospect however, the hype feels more over-compensatory than is justified. “Earwig and the Witch” fails to live up to its expectations, making it difficult to forgive Studio Ghibli for staining its pristine filmography like so.
From the get-go, “Earwig and the Witch” squeezes itself into the Ghibli lineage. Like “Howl’s Moving Castle,” it is yet another adaptation of a Diana Wynne Jones novel. The...

Joe Dante’s sly and smart breakout, about a reporter uncovering a colony of werewolves, was a fun ride that had space for satire
“I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked …”
So begins Allen Ginsberg’s radical poem Howl, which upon close study has absolutely nothing to do with werewolves. And yet it appears on a reporter’s desk in Joe Dante’s horror classic The Howling, one among many blink-or-you’ll-miss it visual jokes that Dante tucks into the movie, like a small-town sheriff scarfing down a can of Wolf-brand chili or an old Little Boy Blue cartoon featuring the Big Bad Wolf that’s airing on TV. His best films are loaded with such peripheral delights, which have the feel of inside jokes, but mostly point to the movie-crazy spirit of a Dante production. The more movies you’ve seen, the...

Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who died last month just 30 days shy of his 102nd birthday, lived a life of fascinating contradictions. From a Dickensian childhood — his father died before he was born, and his mother was institutionalized when he was only two years old — Ferlinghetti eventually landed with wealthy foster parents who nurtured his love of literature and art. He was a World War II naval officer who went to Normandy on D-Day and Nagasaki six weeks after the atomic blast, but was forever afterwards dedicated to anti-war writing, activism, and publishing.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti, the poet whose San Francisco–based City Lights bookstore and publishing house served as a springboard for the Beat generation, has died. His daughter, Julie Sasser, reported his cause of death as interstitial lung disease, according to The New York Times. He was 101.

Ginsberg’s debut public reading of one of the greatest works of American literature occurred at San Francisco’s Six Gallery in October 1955, with Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti in attendance. Tinto Brass's Deadly Attractions and Sinful Desires is showing September - October, 2020 on Mubi.Above: Salon KittyKnown today as a maestro of erotic cinema, Italian director Tinto Brass’s legendary status is hard-won and attributable to his dogged dedication to filming sex. There’s a whiff of aimless opportunism in his genre-hopping early career, which included flirtations with neorealism, psychedelic experimentalism, and even a spaghetti western. But in Salon Kitty (1976), his first English-language film, Brass began to consolidate and wield influences. Salon Kitty brandishes its references in plain acknowledgement of the director’s derivative tendencies, meanwhile offering glimpses of Brass-original motifs that he would later (rather ingeniously) repurpose in erotic contexts. In Salon Kitty, we can perceive the director’s artistic resolve stiffening, amounting to a film that’s greater than the sum of its cherry-picked parts. Based on the stranger-than-fiction, true story of a Berlin brothel of co-opted...

Ahead of the digital release, on August 3rd, of his latest film Peripheral, director Paul Hyett talks about the importance of creative freedom, the lockdown and future projects…
Peripheral is your fourth feature as director. When you started on The Seasoning House back in 2011, did you ever imagine your career would be this successful?
Back when I decided I wanted to make my own movie I had my prosthetics company and was doing very well, but I really wanted to tell my own stories. I said to myself, get The Seasoning House made, see if it’s any good. If it’s a success then I would close my workshop and concentrate on directing. When it was selected as opening film for FrightFest 2012, I was elated and decided to go that path. I’ve been incredibly lucky to have directed four films and never would have thought that would happen.

Janis Joplin may have had more edge, but Linda Ronstadt sold way more records, making her a viable candidate for the title of world’s first woman rock star. In their celebratory and often heartbreaking new documentary, Oscar-winning filmmakers Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman explore the singer’s melodious voice, advanced musicality, Mexican heritage, and battle with Parkinson’s disease. The new trailer for the documentary “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” out this September, opens with a quote from Dolly Parton, announcing: “Linda could literally sing anything.”

This is the first installment of “Breaking Black,” a new weekly column focused on emerging black talent.
Photographer-turned-filmmaker RaMell Ross’ debut feature, “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” was not your typical Oscar nominee. But this impressionistic meditation on black southern life, which was nominated for Best Documentary earlier this year following a strong reception on the festival circuit, heralded the filmmaker as a distinct new voice. Ross, however, is indifferent to the sudden burst of acclaim surrounding his talent, and continues to find new ways of experimenting with the cinematic form. Months after awards season has receded, he’s enmeshed in curatorial and creative work that shows no sign of compromise.

Each of this year’s five contenders for the Oscar Best Documentary (Short Subject) packs a timely issue at its heart: immigration, women’s health, health care, racism, and the spread of fascist ideology. Most of them find a personal edge for their stories, too, rooting out heroes and villains in the pursuit of both truth and a good story.
Curiously, in a mostly well-made group of would-be winners, it’s the nominee that is the least outwardly personal that is the most successful, because its content doesn’t chronicle the story of just one person or group, instead offering a chilling indictment of an entire country at one pivotal moment in history. In a field of urgent films, it’s the oldest story that packs the biggest punch, if only because it comes with such a necessary warning: keep telling these stories, or nothing will ever change.
