Good adaptation of a lesser known Brothers Grimm tale

Warning: Spoilers
"Die sechs Schwäne" is another Grimm tale adaptation and it came out as a television movie in December 2012. Usually these adaptations (there are really many of them) run for 50-60 minutes, but this one here is around 90. But this is not a problem at all as this movie did not drag at all or only once or twice in the first half. I personally found the film gets a lot better in the second half and I would almost call it edge-of-seat stuff.

Sinja Dieks (not too known, with long blonde hair) plays the central character, a poor young woman who is not allowed to say a single word for several years if she wants to save her brothers' lives. When she meets the prince and falls in love with him, his evil mother, the Queen, tries to make use of her silence in order to get rid off the girl who has no social standing. As her brothers were turned into swans (look film title), this reminded me a bit of a lighter(? ummmm.. maybe more child-appropriate) version of "Krabat". The film's director is Karola Hattop who has worked on several of these cringeworthy romantic comedies who are shown so often on German television, so this film here is certainly a positive surprise. The Grimm work was adapted by Inès Keerl. She has not worked on a film since then, but been very prolific before that.

The evil queen is played by Julia Jäger, who you may have seen in Jochen Alexander Freydank's Oscar winner "Spielzeugland". She gives a scarily good performance as well. Difficult to say if she is more memorable than Dieks. It's actually pretty tough to watch how the main character gets framed so much by the Queen, even for the killing of her own child. (Don't worry, the kid lives!) So yeah, good film all in all. recommended and maybe even a must-see if you are into movies.
