More than 500 cinema screens have reopened in China, where the coronavirus outbreak is seen to be receding, though box office takings remain minimal as the public is mostly staying away.
State media Cgtn reported that 486 theaters were open for business on Friday. On Monday, financial publication Caixin said the number had risen to 507, representing less than 5% of all cinemas in commercial operation prior to the virus outbreak.
Data from private-sector ticketing firm Maoyan showed that venues had opened in five provinces: far-flung Xinjiang; Shangdong, a coastal province that lies between Beijing and Shanghai; southern, landlocked province Sichuan; and two populous coastal regions, Fujian and Guangdong, which border Hong Kong.
The data showed that nationwide revenue on Friday totalled less than $2,000. In Fujian and Guangdong, not a single ticket was sold.

China’s streaming and online games companies have received a boost from the cancelation of seven major film releases that were expected to have dominated the Chinese New Year holidays, and the enforced closure of the country’s cinemas.
Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, and a dozen other Chinese cities are under government-mandated lockdown, causing tens of millions of people to cancel their travel plans and stay at home instead. That has handed the initiative to streaming companies.
Social media postings suggest that millions of people are stuck at home – some in cities under lockdown, others simply benefiting from the extra three days holiday mandated by the Chinese government – playing games and watching movies online.
The New York-traded shares of games and online entertainment firms have defied the recent stock market downturns and made modest gains. Streamer iQIYI closed the Thursday trading session at $22.43 per Adr, compared with $20.80 on Friday.

This seems like an intriguingly different project for Karl Urban to involve himself with. It's a 3D family film called The Wonder, and it's a fantasy adventure that centers around magic rainbows. Apparently the actor is officially signed on with the film now, and it sounds like it's going to be a very crazy film... seriously! Just read over this breakdown of the story (thanks to Empire), and see for yourself!
The Wonder follows three teenagers, led by defiant outsider Rachel (Willow Shields), who after a bruising encounter with school bullies, experiences something incredible and seemingly impossible… a rainbow reaching up to the sky from a pool of golden energy. With the help of friends Grace, a Chinese girl and Tane, a Maori boy, the teenage trio adopt high-tech methods to find another, and learning of ancient rainbow legends they each make a special wish. Finally they actually track down...

What happens when Katniss' sister Primrose from The Hunger Games and Dr. Bones McCoy step across a rainbow? Sure, it sounds like an incredibly stupid, overly complicated bad joke, but really it's just the casting announcement for the new 3D adventure film The Wonder 3D. In less cryptic terms, Variety is reporting that Willow Shields and Karl Urban have both signed on for the new movie, which is being helmed by Ron Underwood. The trade paper describes the plot of the project saying it's about "a 14-year-old (Shields) who, along with two of her classmates, finds the end of a rainbow. As they step inside the rainbow, it takes them away to China where local authorities and a mysterious organization are soon after them." Urban will be playing a "consul" who helps the main characters out in some way. Underwood has spent the last few years directing almost exclusively for...
