Five years ago, through the randomness of searching for an affordable apartment in New York City, I landed in a patch of western Queens known as Sunnyside.
I fell hard for the neighborhood’s Old World charms. Sturdy prewar brick apartment buildings with 10-foot ceilings and parquet floors. Bodegas and bars on every corner. Restaurants and specialty markets to die for. A homey community feel with plenty of kids and dogs running around and old-timers holding court on the plazas under the elevated 7 train stations along Queens Boulevard.
The single best thing about living here is the array of ethnicities and cultures that are packed into roughly 10 square blocks. An area that was once largely Irish and Italian now is home to immigrants from South Asia to South America and most points in between. There’s an undeniable energy that comes from being surrounded by so many languages, faiths and cultural traditions.

Kal Penn is an appealing actor whose airy, loose charisma has lately exceeded his luck: On TV in recent years, Penn has appeared on vexed series including “We Are Men,” “Battle Creek,” and “Designated Survivor.” Happily, on his new sitcom, “Sunnyside,” Penn seems to be porting in experience from a different part of his career — the time he spent working in President Barack Obama’s administration, in the Office of Public Engagement. That branch works, as its name would indicate, to keep the public engaged with the work of government. In “Sunnyside,” Penn makes the job literal, playing a disengaged former politician who takes on a new kind of constituent outreach. It’s a job that matches both his experience and his gifts, and a very promising pilot for NBC.

There are two things that Kal Penn loves: making people laugh and America. This is reflected in his résumé, which includes the successful sitcom How I Met Your Mother, the cult stoner comedy Harold and Kumar franchise (which we will get to later), and his work in the Obama administration as an associate director in the White House Office of Public Engagement. His newest venture, the NBC sitcom Sunnyside, puts a comedic spin on the very relevant topic of immigration and American citizenship — practically a happy marriage of his two favorite things.
Created by Penn and Matt Murray, who also executive produce alongside Michael Schur, Sunnyside speaks volumes when it comes to inclusivity in Hollywood with a diverse cast including Joel Kim Booster, Diana-Maria Riva, Kiran Deol, Poppy Liu, Moses Storm and Samba Schutte. The creator of Fxx series “You’re the Worst” is trying to get his actors in place. “Allan, take a step back toward the polar bear,” Stephen Falk shouts over a din of dancing bodies. “No, toward the polar bear!”

In HitFix's new feature "Waxing Episodic," we reflect on an episode of television we'll never forget. NBC's "The Office" debuted 10 years ago this week, arriving with the unenviable challenge of having to live up to the standard of one of the best-received comedies of recent times, but went on to outstrip the British original. I don't even know if that's a controversial statement anymore. The British "Office" is great and, in terms of comedic efficiency, NBC's version didn't come close. But Ricky Gervais' series was built for 12 episodes and a Christmas special and never had to worry about longevity, never had to wonder how sustainable its circumstances and its characters were. NBC's version took that world and made it renewable. Whether you think the American "Office" was great (or even good) for all 200-ish of its episodes, it was certainly very good or great for more than 13 episodes. I...

Kal Penn is walking a different beat in the CBS police dramedy "Battle Creek," but this is in many ways a return for him. You might not necessarily remember, but Penn has been working in the CBS family steadily since he ended his sabbatical working for the White House. He followed a recurring arc on "How I Met Your Mother" with a regular role on the short-lived "We Are Men" before landing on "Battle Creek," which was created by Vince Gilligan, but is run by David Shore. Shore, of course, worked with Penn during his multi-season run as the ill-fated Dr. Lawrence Kutner on Fox's "House," a series that appears on the resume of many of the "Battle Creek" scribes. And when one of the first things we learn about Penn's Detective Fontanelle is that he's a user of medicinal marijuana, which ties Font in with Penn's long and beloved...

Exclusive: House alum Kal Penn is reuniting with hit medical drama’s creator David Shore on Battle Creek. Penn is the first actor cast in the high-profile CBS series from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan and Shore. The project, from Sony TV, centers on a detective and an FBI agent with very different world views who are teamed up to clean up the semi-mean streets of Battle Creek, Mi. Penn will play another local detective who initially has reservations about the newly arrived FBI agent. Penn, repped by Gersh, Industry Entertainment and Michael Fuller, explored multiple pilot offers before setting on Battle Creek because of his relationship with Shore on House where Penn co-starred for two seasons before leaving for a position in the White House. Battle Creek brings him back at CBS where he starred on comedy series We Are Men this past season and previously recurred on How I Met Your Mother.

It's been a busy Fall, and The Boob Tube Dude all but stopped doing weekly episodic reviews for reasons laid out here. But with a lot of shows starting to wrap up their Fall runs, I thought I'd offer up some short takes on the shows I watch on a weekly basis. I almost thought about breaking down the shows I'm occasionally watching or have long given up on, but let's just say this has been an overall unimpressive lineup in late 2013. That approach saves you time and saves me from having to ice my fingers any more than I'll already need to do after typing all this out.
I'll go night-by-night, which is as good an approach as any for something as wide-ranging as this. I'll cover Sunday-Tuesday now, and Wednesday-Saturday tomorrow.

Fox has ordered a full season of "Dads," giving the comedy series a full 22-episode order. The show follows another new Fox comedy, "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" in getting a full season.
Despite widespread critical dislike for the sitcom, which focuses on two 30-something guys dealing with their irritating and impossible-to-ignore fathers, "Dads" has apparently brought in the numbers that Fox wanted to see.
"Fox has been looking to break into the multi-camera format for some time," said Kevin Reilly, the chairman of entertainment at Fox. "With 'Dads,' we have an asset that we can grow, and we're looking forward to seeing where the fantastic cast and the creative minds of Seth, Alec, Mike and Wellesley take us the rest of the season."
As for those numbers, "Dads" is one of the top 10 new series among men in the 18-34 demo. It is also a top-10 comedy for both men...

Fox has finalized a Back 9 order to comedy Dads. The pickup means that Fox has become the only major broadcast network to give episodic orders (full-season ones to Dads and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and a second-season one to Sleepy Hollow) to all of its new scripted fall series that have premiered. ABC, NBC and CBS all have cancelled a show each – Lucky 7, Welcome To The Family and We Are Men, respectively. In the pickup announcement for Dads, Fox chairman Kevin Reilly acknowledged that the show, which was met with a critical backlash, is a work in progress. “Fox has been looking to break into the multi-camera format for some time,” he said. “With Dads, we have an asset that we can grow, and we’re looking forward to seeing where the fantastic cast and the creative minds of Seth, Alec, Mike and Wellesley take us the rest of the season.” Executive produced by Seth MacFarlane,...

NBC has cancelled both Welcome to the Family and Ironside. This paves the way for the return of Community and the debut of Chicago Pd, the Chicago Fire spin-off. Despite the failure of Ironside, the peacock network wants to try another reboot -- Murder, She Wrote.
CBS has given full season orders to Mom, The Crazy Ones, and The Millers. (The network’s other new comedy, We Are Men, was cancelled.) The CW has renewed America's Next Top Model for a 21st cycle. ABC is considering reviving Body of Proof.
Fox has ordered a new fantasy action-adventure series called Hieroglyph. The network has also ordered a full season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. No word on Dads. Fox has delayed Almost Human while Bones and Raising Hope are moving to Fridays.

October has always been a make-or-break month for freshman series; as they struggle to build audiences against already-established programs, many falter and eventually fall under the dreaded network cancellation axe. Within the next few days, we’ll likely be seeing a few more cancellations on major networks including ABC, NBC, Fox and CBS. Though the first show to perish this season was ABC’s ill-conceived lottery drama Lucky 7, NBC just one-upped its rival network by killing two freshman flops with one stone: Ironside and Welcome to the Family.
The former, a cop procedural starring Blair Underwood, was a remake of a hugely successful NBC show that aired during the ’60s and ’70s. Centering on a dedicated cop confined to a wheelchair, the new Ironside drew criticism for its heavy tone and monotonous pace. While the original Ironside ran for 199 episodes and a TV movie, NBC’s modern-day take on the...

They’re alive! Maybe! Two ailing CBS freshman shows suddenly displayed a hopeful pulse Monday night: The Anna Faris comedy Mom and Toni Collette conspiracy thriller Hostages both showed improvement in the ratings for the first time.
Mom perked up 20 percent, probably helped at least partly by its Big Bang Theory repeat lead-in improving, while Hostages climbed 17 percent. This ratings gain comes with an asterisk because CBS’ Minneapolis affiliate carried a football game which has impacted these morning numbers. Mom is expected to still be up at least a couple tenths when the final numbers are released regardless of football...

Episode 2 of "The Blacklist," which had already set a DVR ratings record for three days of playback, is now the most-dvr'd episode of a network series in history.
The Live +7 ratings from Nielsen for the week of Sept. 30-Oct. 6 show "The Blacklist" gaining 6.5 million viewers, growing from 11.35 million viewers in the overnight ratings to 17.86 million with a week of DVR playback. It's the first time a show has ever added more than 6 million viewers via DVR use. Through its first two episodes, the NBC drama is averaging a gain of about 6.1 million viewers. It's also adding 1.9 points in the adults 18-49 ratings (growing from 3.6 to 5.5).

The new season is rolling along fairly smoothly, but you knew the casualties were coming, and new shows are starting to drop, and I’m curious what people think.
One of the strangest happenings so far is the disappearance of We Are Men, which seemed like a no-brainer. It wasn’t the best show, but it had a lot of potential, and you’d think the name power alone would have kept it around for a little while. No such luck though, as CBS pulled the show, which is more unusual because that’s not generally CBS’ game.
CBS did pick up The Crazy Ones and The Millers, and even if I don’t love the show, it’s nice to see Will Arnett finally get a bit of a break with a new comedy. CBS also gave Mom a full season order, which is a bit surprising, because it seems a little flat.

NBC’s The Blacklist just broke a DVR ratings record, becoming the first broadcast TV show to ever add more than 6 million viewers thanks to playback over its first seven days of release (full chart for all shows below).
Nielsen just released its full DVR data for the second week of the broadcast season, and James Spader’s Monday night freshman drama went from 11.4 million viewers on its premiere night (including first-night DVR playback) to 17.9 million for its first full seven days. In the adult demo, The Blacklist was also one of the biggest gainers, percentage wise — jumping 67 percent.

CBS has ordered full seasons of their three remaining new sitcoms -- Mom, The Crazy Ones, and The Millers. (The network's other new comedy, We Are Men, has already been cancelled.)
While all three shows are doing relatively well, I don't think any of them can be considered hits.
On Monday nights, Mom's demo numbers have fallen each week since its premiere. It's currently the network's lowest-rated sitcom. However, the show comes from Chuck Lorre and stars Anna Faris and Alison Janney so they're naturally inclined to be patient. Next month, Mike & Molly will start airing in the 9pm timeslot so they're hoping Mom's ratings will improve with another Lorre lead-in.
On Thursdays, The Crazy Ones started out very strong with a 3.9 demo rating (in part thanks to being slotted after Big Bang Theory). In week two, Crazy Ones moved...

After having cast out We Are Men like a suddenly hilariously single dude, CBS has gotten on with its life by issuing full-season orders to its other new original comedies The Crazy Ones, The Millers, and Mom. That each would get to finish out the year already seemed like a foregone conclusion: The Robin Williams/Sarah Michelle Gellar-starring The Crazy Ones ranks as the No. 1 new comedy in a season that’s been especially cruel to them, immediately followed by the No. 2 show The Millers (prompting Greg Garcia to angrily protest that it’s not “the No. 2 ...

It's a good day to star in a CBS freshman comedy.
On Friday (Oct. 18), the Eye announced it had handed out back nine orders to "The Crazy Ones," "The Millers" and "Mom," giving the trio of comedies full first seasons.
"We're proud of CBS' leadership position in comedy and excited to build on it with the back nine pick-ups of these three new comedies," Nina Tassler, CBS Entertainment president, said in a statement. "These series are creatively distinct, continue to improve each week and are led by strong showrunners, writing and productions staffs, and feature amazingly talented casts."
"The Crazy Ones" holds the distinction of the season's most-watched new comedy, with "The Millers" and "Mom" in second and third, respectively.
It hasn't been all sunny days for CBS comedy, however. Fellow freshman series "We Are Men" failed to gain traction after two weeks on the air and was subsequently pulled from Monday nights,...

CBS is giving a vote of confidence to new comedies Mom, The Millers, and The Crazy Ones, ordering full 22-episode seasons of all three. While none of the shows is a breakout, all have performed respectably and, more important, have held relatively steady the past two weeks. It helps that two of the newbies — The Millers and Mom — have been behind established CBS hits (The Big Bang Theory and 2 Broke Girls, respectively). But, whatever the reasons, the comedies currently stand as the three most-watched new comedies on any network this fall. (The Eye's fourth new half-hour, We Are Men, was canceled after two weeks.) What's more, while CBS's new comedies aren't blockbusters, they're still far ahead of the struggling freshman half-hours on NBC, Fox, and ABC.

We finally have some comedies to go with those three new dramas that had been picked up so far this fall. As expected, CBS has given Back 9 orders to The Crazy Ones, The Millers and Mom. The pickups come as Crazy Ones and The Millers ticked up by a tenth in the 18-49 fast nationals last night. While Mom slipped by a tenth this week, it comes from comedy Superman Chuck Lorre and stars Anna Faris, so there was no chance that show was not getting picked up. In fact, all three comedies hail from A-list auspices: Lorre, David E. Kelley (Crazy Ones) and Greg Garcia (The Millers). CBS has been touting the performance of its new comedies (sans swiftly cancelled We Are Men), which rank as No. 1-3 in total viewers and claim the top 2 spots in adults 18-49 among all new comedy series in another fall that has...

Those people (and TV critics) wondering why Will Arnett would take a role on a CBS multi-cam sitcom with a running fart gag in the pilot, for crying out loud, even if it is exec produced by Greg Garcia, need look no further than Forbes’ just-out list of the highest-paid TV actors. It’s topped entirely by CBS comedy stars. (Note the somewhat apologetic tone of Arnett’s recent multi-cam explanation to Digital Spy: “I’ve spent the last 10 years doing single-camera shows, from Arrested Development to 30 Rock to Running Wilde to Up All Night and, it sounds lame, but I just thought it would be really fun.”) Ashton Kutcher is ranked No. 1, paid $24 million between June of ’12 and ’13, because he’s the guy who enabled Warner Bros TV to retain a big franchise and CBS to hang on to an important piece of its campaign to take over comedy...

CBS’ tweaked Monday lineup posted a small improvement — up a tenth (5%) in adults 18-49 to a 1.9 rating and 12% in total viewers to 7 million — largely because of the replacement of underperforming We Are Men with a The Big Bang Theory return. The impact on the rest of CBS’ Monday series was mixed. 2 Broke Girls (2.5) improved by moving to 8:30 Pm behind How I Met Your Mother (3.0, up a tenth from last week’s fast national). 2 Broke Girls was up 14% from its series-low fast national last Monday when it aired at 9 Pm, following We Are Men (and on Men’s 1.8 rating). But freshman Mom (1.9) slipped 10% with Big Bang instead of 2 Broke Girls as a lead-in (the size of the lead-in was the same, 2.2). At 10 Pm, Hostages (1.2) has stabilized (found bottom?) after two double-digit declines, flat in adults 18-49 and total viewers. The serialized drama posted a strong 65% Live+7 gain for its premiere...
