“Speak No Evil” is ready to make some noise at the box office this weekend.
The Universal and Blumhouse horror remake, released two years after the terrifying Danish original film, made $1.3 million in previews at the box office. It’s expected to make between $10 million and $13 million at the box office in its opening weekend, which would be a solid start considering its budget was just $15 million.
“Speak No Evil” won’t stand a chance against Warner Bros.’ “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which opened with a scary good $111 million last weekend and will keep the box office crown for the second week. Ticket sales for the Tim Burton sequel are projected to decline about 60%, putting its box office total to around $45 million in its second week.

“Speak No Evil,” Universal and Blumhouse’s remake of the 2022 Danish horror film, is projected to earn $10 million to $13 million in its box office debut.
The movie cost $15 million, so it’ll be decently positioned in its theatrical run. But unless it beats expectations, “Speak No Evil” may continue a humdrum year for scary movies. Horror is usually one of the most reliable big screen genres, but other than Disney’s “Alien: Romulus” ($314 million globally) and Neon’s sleeper hit “Longlegs” ($103 million globally), recent offerings haven’t popped at the box office.
James Watkins (“Bastille Day”) directed “Speak No Evil,” a pitch-black comedy of manners about a couple — starring James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis — who invite two friends to their vacation at their idyllic, remote home in the countryside. It turns into a trip from hell when things take an unimaginably sinister turn. Reviews have been positive, which could help with word of mouth.

Reputation is the kind of movie that reminds audiences that we Brits know better than anyone how to craft and tell a story that’s honest, raw, real and above all else relatable. More often than not we look to the Ken Loachs and Shane Meadows of the world for that slice of grim reality and for me those guys were at their best when starting out, which has always prompted me to keep an eye on emerging directors from my homeland and keep an open mind when going in.
Now, in Martin Law, I have a new name to add to my list of: “I’m keeping an eye on this guy”. After having the chance to check out his debut feature Reputation.

Variety chief correspondent and rising star Elizabeth Wagmeister is heading to CNN, where she’ll cover the entertainment beat for the news cabler, based in Los Angeles.
Wagmeister was a driving force who helped Variety reclaim its role as the most-read, No. 1 entertainment news source in the business (often doubling its competition in Comscore rankings). At Variety, she served as an on-camera reporter, as well as a writer, penning widely-seen cover stories on the Kardashian-Jenner family, Kelly Ripa, Olivia Wilde and Colton Underwood — stories that often created their own buzz and news cycle. Wagmeister is also a dogged reporter who led Variety’s coverage of the Harvey Weinstein trial and other #MeToo stories, and extensively covered the Britney Spears conservatorship case.

Seth Rogen once recruited veteran actor Rosie Perez for his and James Franco’s 2008 comedy film Pineapple Express. But Perez admitted that work got a little wild between herself and her co-stars while filming.

Perez played a cop in Rogen’s stoner comedy about a marijuana dealer on the run after witnessing a murder. She was drawn to the movie as soon as she received the script, and immediately found it funny.
“As soon as I read the script I was like, this is hilarious,” she once said according to CBS.
One of the most memorable parts of the film was a fight scene between Perez’s and Franco’s characters. At first, the fight was supposed to involve Perez’s stunt double. But...

Exclusive: J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, the creator-EPs behind Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, have set up their 2017 Black List screenplay Escape with The Hideaway Entertainment (Cherry), tapping James Watkins to direct.
The action-adventure pic is inspired by the true story of convicts Robert Greenhill and Alexander Pearce, and their sensational journey of survival after escaping from prison, which scandalized the Victorian-era world. While the story has previously inspired songs, works of fiction and non-fiction, news articles, tall tales, art, illustrations and other printed materials, it has never before been adapted as a large-scale feature film.
When the wrongly-accused Greenhill is shipped to the harshest Tasmanian penal colony in the 1820s, he quickly realizes his only chance of survival is to partner with the notorious murderer Pearce and five other hardened criminals in order to escape.

I disagree with other critics all the time, and don’t generally blink an eye about it, but as soon as the news dropped that “Eternals,” the Marvel epic directed by Chloé Zhao, had received the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score (48% fresh) of any film in the 13-year history of the MCU, making it the first official “Rotten” film in the series, my hidden-agenda detector went on high alert. Rotten Tomatoes scores are, to put it mildly, not something to be regarded as if they’d been handed down on stone tablets. Yet based on that score, and much of the web chatter about the movie, and the fact that it received a mere “B” from audiences polled by CinemaScore (horrors!), a meme has set in about “Eternals”: “Worst. Marvel. Movie. Ever.” Or, at the very least, a creative debacle. If you believe, as I do, that that’s an outlandish piece of hyperbole,...

Mélanie Laurent is probably still best known to American filmgoers for her literal barn-burner of a performance in “Inglorious Basterds,” but on the global stage, she’s a filmmaking force, premiering her sixth film in ten years at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival on its way to a global debut on Amazon Prime, the streaming service’s first original French production.
“The Mad Women’s Ball,” adapted by Laurent and Christophe Deslandes from Victoria Mas’ novel, explores outdated medical practices and even the supernatural, and it’s another powerful examination of how the asylum essentially served as the witch-burning post for more “enlightened” times — a place to take care of women who didn’t know their place, all under the guise of serving the public order.

Action movies are always going to remain one of the most popular genres in cinema, because there’s no better form of escapism than leaving your brain at the door, sitting back and enjoying two hours of fist fights, car chases, shootouts and explosions. That’s one of the many reasons why Extraction ended up becoming Netflix‘s most popular original ever, but it’s far from the only actioner to gain a huge audience on the world’s biggest streaming service.
Over the last few months, we’ve seen Dwayne Johnson’s Die Hard knockoff Skyscraper, Idris Elba’s French-set thriller Bastille Day, bargain basement sequel Rogue Warfare: The Hunt and John Travolta’s From Paris with Love all crack the Top 10 most-watched list, and each of those B-level action movies could be generously described as mediocre at best. The Netflix Top 10 most-watched movies list is always an interesting reflection of what subscribers are currently digging, with the chart typically made up of a handful of Netflix Originals, some obscure titles that many probably overlooked and at least a few of the usual suspects. But today, the Top 10 is being dominated by superhero actors, with at least 6 of them showing up across the various films that are on the list.
To start with, the #1 movie on Netflix right now is Enola Holmes, which stars Millie Bobby Brown as the titular heroine. But perhaps of most interest to comic book fans will be Henry Cavill playing the iconic Sherlock Holmes. And suffice it to say, the internet can’t get enough of him in the role.

Netflix has become the home for underrated and overlooked titles this year, covering everything from horror oddities to star vehicles. While some random movies do show up on the service’s top 10 lists, many of these end up being worth a rewatch, or seen for the first time if missed upon their initial release. The latest example of this trend is the 2016 Idris Elba film Bastille Day, which is currently top of the Netflix US most-watched movies chart, and is even beating out the likes of The Devil All the Time.
Also known as The Take, Bastille Day stars Elba as CIA agent Sean Briar, who gets drawn into a Paris-set plot involving an explosive bomb and Richard Madden’s American pickpocket. It’s nothing groundbreaking as far as action flicks go, but it gets the job done. English director James Watkins was behind the camera, having built a solid...

While it’s a quieter than usual month overall for new movies on Netflix, the past seven days did bring us a handful of interesting films to help keep folks entertained. Ranging from classic social commentary, to under the radar comedy-dramas, to a criminally underrated action flick, there’s more than likely to be a pic that arrived this week to suit your tastes.
So, without further ado, let’s break down the best new movies that hit the platform over the last several days.
One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975)
Headlining this week’s recommendations is Milos Forman’s award-winning drama. Ostensibly a social commentary that takes its aim at the American psychiatric system, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest centres on criminal Randle Patrick McMurphy (played brilliantly by the iconic Jack Nicholson), who pleads insanity to avoid hard labor, only to end up rallying up the patients within...

It’s been quite the month for Netflix so far, with plenty of new films and shows for subscribers to delve into during a time when socialization is widely off limits. Thankfully, there’s a bit of something for fans of every genre, too, such as the addition of Hilary Swank’s sci-fi drama Away, spooky mind-bender I’m Thinking of Ending Things and the family-friendly How to Train Your Dragon 2. But of course, that’s just scratching the surface of September’s offerings.
Luckily for subscribers, today marks another large content drop to add even more things to binge, and though not all of it is going to appeal to a broad audience, there’s at least one major new movie that’s guaranteed to make a splash.

Idris Elba definitely possesses the screen presence, charisma and acting abilities to become a standout action hero, but for inexplicable reasons, his ventures into the genre have been overwhelmingly disappointing. The Losers and Takers both bombed at the box office a decade ago, and since then he’s gone on to star in a number of mediocre titles.

Furie is a French and Belgium feature. This title looks at a family, returning from a holiday. Unfortunately, squatters have take over their home. Furie, also known as Get In or Die Trying (Uhm), has had a run on the film festival circuit, in 2019. Supposedly based on a true story, this feature has begun a home entertainment release in Europe. Directed by Olivier Abbou, this film centrally stars: Adama Niane (Baise-moi), Stéphane Caillard (The Take) and Paul Hamy. A trailer for the film was released in 2019 (found below) and new stills are available here, as well. The trailer is exclusively in French, with French subtitles. Some of the dialogue mentions: "no response on the phone," "squatters," "missing children" and a "plan." This Canadian's French could still use some improvement. However, the trailer does show one family struggling with a difficult situation, while terrorized by a group intent on class warfare.

Director Todd Phillips’ highly-anticipated DC film Joker was released in theaters this weekend and I loved it! I remember going to the little independent cinema near where I lived with my dad and brothers over 20 years ago to watch The Blair Witch Project. We got there and the line to get tickets was around the block!
The marketing campaign for this film was freakin’ brilliant. At the time it was lightning in bottle because it was the first movie to start a viral craze online. People didn’t really know the power of internet marketing before this movie came out.
The marketing team was able to build a myth and legend around this and over half the people going into see the movie thought it was real! You can’t pull that kind of marketing off these days.
Anyway, I’ve got an interesting video essay from The Take for you to watch that explores how the film became predicted YouTube culture and fame.

The video is made by The Take, where fans of movies and TV can find video essays on all sorts of subjects. This one takes a deep dive on the signature style that makes a Tarantino film so unique.
Some of the aspects pointed out in the film to help you know you’re watching a Tarantino film are:
-It steals. Tarantino is vocal about the fact that artists don’t pay homage to one another. They steal. This part of the video shows a lot of side-by-side comparison between shots from his films, and films he loves.
-It’s a bloodbath. Pretty self-explanatory.

Released October 30 via Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the story is about the rescue mission of Gene Hambleton, an Air Force Navigator who, equipped with classified secrets about advanced rocketry and radar systems, as well as the target cities in the Soviet Union that American missiles were aimed at, is taken down behind enemy lines.
