Stars: Ezequiel Rodriguez, Demian Salomon, Luis Ziembrowski, Silvina Sabater | Written and Directed by Demián Rugna
When Evil Lurks (Cuando Acecha la Maldad) is the new feature film from Argentinian director Demián Rugna. Rugna assured himself a place in horror history with his film Terrified in 2017 and then vanished off the scene until his segment in last year’s Satanic Hispanics. Thankfully he didn’t make us wait another five years for something new, and When Evil Lurks premiered this year at TIFF as part of its Midnight Madness program.
Appropriately enough the film starts somewhere around midnight when Pedro and his brother Jimmy are awakened by the sound of gunshots somewhere in the woods. Going to investigate the next morning they find a body, or half of one anyway, with a strange device nearby and a notebook in a language the brothers don’t recognize nearby.

We have a trio of news items today, recapping all the hard work our friends at FilmSharks are doing to get LatAm genre cinema out into the world. The three projects we're highlighting today are an Argentine true-crime thriller A Singuler Crime, a found footage horror flick called Do Not Enter (we presume from Paraguay for reasons you find out soon enough) and Argentine mystical horror flick Legions. The first two titles, A Singular Crime and Do Not Enter, are new to us though one of the producers of horror flick Do Not Enter, Hugo Cardozo from Paraguay, has been featured on our site before for his breakout hit Morgue. We have written about Legions a few times already. Trailers for all three projects are...

Exclusive: Fabian Forte’s Argenitian horror Legions (aka Legiones) has found buyers at the EFM.
The feature is headed AMC Networks’ Shudder in Spain, where distributor FilmSharks has struck a pay-tv and SVOD deal. AMC has also taken Eastern Europe rights.
In Latin America, FilmSharks struck a multi-territory theatrical release deal with Aman Kapur’s CineStar. This comprises Peru, Bolivia, Colombia and Central America.
The deals follow a North American deal struck with XYZ Films at Montreal’s Fantasia Fest following its premiere, as we reported first in July last year. Donau has also picked up several German-speaking territories.
Billed as ‘The Evil Dead meets Latin America,’ Legions follows a powerful sorcerer, who is locked away in an asylum as evil, demonic forces take control of Argentina. If he can escape and find his daughter, their combined strength could save the country,...
