2017 was all about politics, scandal and a royal proposal -- at least, according to Google.
The tech company released their end-of-year search data on Wednesday, revealing some unsurprising trends in their most-searched celebs. They also tracked the year in pop culture with the biggest movies, TV, music and more.
Despite a fairly-recent scandal, newly-fired Todayshow host Matt Lauer found himself atop the list of most-searched people. The news anchor was ousted from his long-tenured position at NBC following allegations of sexual misconduct and "inappropriate workplace behavior."
Scandal also landed celebs like Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey and Kathy Griffin in the top 10. Perhaps the only two non-controversial entries were Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot and actress Meghan Markle.
Markle, who also landed at the No. 1 spot on the most-searched actors list, is, of course, in the news for her recent engagement to Prince Harry. The royal pair confirmed their plans to wed in late November, with reported plans for...

Singer and The Voice alumna Melanie Martinez has denied claims of sexual assault put forth by her former friend, saying she is “horrified and saddened” by the accusations.
In a lengthy story shared to Twitter on Monday, Timothy Heller accused Martinez, 22, of getting her high on marijuana before forcefully performing oral sex and using a sex toy on her. Heller also said she repeatedly refused Martinez’s propositions over the course of a two-night “sleepover,” using excuses such as that her boyfriend would be mad or that she was tired.
“I never said yes. I said no, repeatedly,” Heller wrote.

2017-09-04T09:28:09-07:00Hollywood Has the Worst Labor Day in 20 Years
No new wide releases and a crop of holdovers that haven't generated much excitement. It was a recipe for a slow holiday weekend at the box office, and it turned out to be just that.
Via The Hollywood Reporter.
The Labor Day box office was anything but a picnic, capping a difficult summer that saw revenue and attendance plummet.
Revenue for the four-day holiday weekend will land between $93 million and $96 million, down as much as 26 percent from 2016 and marking the worst Labor Day frame since 1998 or 1996, when revenue topped out at $95.2 million and $90.6 million, respectively, according to comScore. (Final numbers for this year will be tallied Tuesday.)
The culprit? There weren't any new wide releases. At the same time, it could have been much worse. Many thought it would be the slowest Labor Day in 25 years or more,...

Their journey includes plenty of debauchery, fan mania, and most of all, a peek into their epic, lasting impact on Britpop, the British...

Audiences can't seem to get enough of animated family films about animals. Illumination Entertainment and Universal's The Secret Life of Pets debuted to a bigger-than-expected $103.2 million from 4,370 theaters at the North American box office — delivering Chris Meledandri's Illumination its first new franchise after Despicable Me/Minions and eclipsing Pixar's Inside Out ($90.4 million) to score the best start ever for an original animated property, not accounting for inflation. It's also the No. 6 opening ever for any animated film, and Illumination's second-best start after last summer's Minions ($115.7 million). Overseas, the

It’s been 10 years since audiences first got to see Mater and Lightning McQueen on the big screen. Pixar’s Cars opened in theaters on June 9, 2006, following its world premiere at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, Nc. The seventh feature from the Emeryville, CA-based animation studio, it returned John Lasseter to the director’s chair. Cars failed to reach the box office grosses of the three other Pixar movies released before it in the new millennium — Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo and The Incredibles — but, unsurprisingly, merchandise sales were huge for this one. A sequel was released in 2011, and Cars 3 is set for a June 2017 release. Other notable June 9 happenings in pop culture history: • 1950: British noir film Night and the City had its U.S. premiere. • 1963: Barbra Streisand appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show for the third time. • 1984: Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” hit the top of the Billboard singles chart.

Apologies to James Brown, but as the live playoffs kick off tonight (8/7c), it looks like the “girl curse*” of NBC’s reality singing juggernaut is about to be broken — thanks to Christina Aguilera’s deep and seemingly unbeatable roster of contestants. (*The girl curse refers to the fact that no female coach has won the show in nine cycles.)

John Oliver, John Legend and Jorge Ramos are a few of the world’s greatest leaders, according to a new Fortune list that came out Thursday. The publication’s third annual ranking, which has Amazon founder Jeff Bezos at No. 1 and Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay at No. 50, ranks Legend surprisingly high: No. 6. “He can boast a best-song Oscar, 10 Grammys, and at least 6 million albums sold. But Legend, 37, also embraces the grunt work of philanthropy–serving on boards, penning editorials, conducting listening tours in prisons and schools–and his advocacy is attracting as much attention as his hits,” the.

Hamilton — the Broadway sensation that's added a long-overdue splash of color to the Great White Way, revitalized America's origin story, and revolutionized musical theater in the process — is going to be a movie. That's not a fact, but it's inevitable: Broadway and Hollywood are becoming more symbiotic by the day, and we now live in a world where a Jack Black comedy about a substitute teacher has been adapted to the stage by theater god Andrew Lloyd Webber. (For perspective, that's roughly the equivalent of Ridley Scott directing a blockbuster adaptation of Cats.

Jazmine Sullivan's Reality Show is up for three Grammys this year. And she almost didn't come out of retirement to make it. A native of Philadelphia, Sullivan was first signed to Jive Records at the age of 15. She recorded an entire album with them, but it was shelved indefinitely and she was eventually dropped from the label. Sullivan retreated to behind-the-scenes work, writing and guesting on other artists' songs. Eventually, she released her first single, "Need U Bad," which featured Missy Elliott and Pepa of Salt-n-Pepa. That song jumped to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs...

MSNBC’s debate helped push the network to ninth place in primetime viewers. Also Read: Donald Trump and...

The two are one in the same, of course, but as a result of a strange (and apparently deathless) Internet joke, Astley boasts two very different fan bases: The people who bought his records starting in the late '80s and the people who encountered him after being tricked into clicking on the video for his 1987 hit, "Never Gonna Give You Up.

Tom Hanks may have missed out on an Oscar nomination this year, but here's some consolation news: He's America's favorite movie star.
That's according to The Harris Poll, which revealed the 59-year-old "Bridge of Spies" actor topped the list after surveying more than 2,200 adults across the country. He rose from his previous position, No. 5.
Also rising in the ranks: Johnny Depp, who nabbed the No. 2 spot, despite being snubbed for his performance as Whitey Bulger in "Black Mass."
The rest of the top five was rounded out by Denzel Washington (last year's No. 1), John Wayne, and Harrison Ford. Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Lawrence were the top two female movie stars at No. 6 and 7, respectively.
Hanks will get a good chance to defend his spot this year, as he's next starring as heroic pilot Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger in a biopic directed by Clinton Eastwood.

Glenn Frey and David Bowie will be missed by many generations for a very long time, but right now, few people are missing an opportunity to eulogize the two legendary rockers via digital music purchases. As of Thursday afternoon, Bowie’s final album “Blackstar,” which was released on Jan. 8, is sitting at No. 2 on Amazon and No. 6 on iTunes. The British music legend is only behind Adele on Amazon, who is still sitting atop the iTunes chart. His “Best of Bowie” is trailing the new offering on both charts, but sits in the Top 5 on Amazon (No. 4) and...

An awkward thing happened to the Leonardo DiCaprio film The Revenant as it trekked into theaters last last year in hopes of picking up award show nominations: A rumor put the film in headlines but for reasons that none of its publicists were happy about. In early December, 20th Century Fox spokespeople were forced to clarify that no, the film does not feature a scene in which its star is raped by a bear. DiCaprio himself later weighed in on the rumor, calling it "absurd," and when the film finally hit theaters on Christmas Day, audiences saw that the rumor...
