The first day of Feratum 2013 was definitely a mixed bag. The Coffin Joe homage was great but a series of technical problems ultimately ruined the movie-watching experience: I attended three screenings and each one of them marred bytruly annoying problems! Together with Mexico City's film journalists, I arrived in Tlalpujahua around 12:30 Pm, not early enough to attend the festival's first events, including the showing of Orc Wars and Lección Debida. The theater was almost empty and after 30 minutes there was no indication we were at a real film festival. What happened next...

First rule of fighting a war against ugly, “Lord of the Rings” Orcs — never, ever lose your handgun. What happens when you do? Orcs pick it up, and now you’re dealing with Orcs armed with handguns. And no one wants that. The second rule of fighting a war against ugly Orcs? Don’t shout at them to “Get off your lawn”. They almost always never listen. For those in the mood for some Tomfoolery this morning, check out a ludicrous trailer for director Kohl Glass’ “Orc Wars”. Glass was the editor on a 2011 movie called “Orcs”, and I guess there were some costumes left over from that movie and he decided to make a sorta sequel called “Orc Wars”. Or something. I dunno, I’m just spitballin’ here. It looks goofy as hell, but hey, what do you expect from a movie called “Orc Wars”? Looking to leave the world behind,...

If Kohl Glass' upcoming Orc Wars can offer even half the fun of Orcs! then it will be a trip worth taking. While this film takes a decidedly more serious approach, the make-up FX and creature design seem pretty great.

Microbudget film doesn’t venture into the expensive world of science fiction too often, and certainly not the brand that features hordes of orcs and other fantasy creatures. The film, which has wrapped and is currently gathering its finishing funds on Kickstarter, features ex-Marine John Norton (Rusty Joiner) who buys an isolated western ranch that turns out to contain a portal to another world; when orcs use it to threaten an elf princess (Masiela Lusha) …...
