Actor Lee Jung-jae will attend the Monte-Carlo Television Festival next month for the French press launch of Lucasfilm’s latest live-action series “Star Wars: The Acolyte,” which streams on Disney+. In the show, Lee plays a Jedi Master.
It was his role in the globally successful Netflix series “Squid Game” that first catapulted Lee’s career to an international level. Starring as Seong Gi-hun (No. 456), a financially struggling father who participates in a deadly survival game, his performance earned him the Emmy Award for best actor in a drama series, a first for a non-English speaking actor.
This tremendous success significantly elevated the career of Lee, who is now considered by many as the international standard-bearer for a highly creative and avant-garde Korean culture.
In “Star Wars: The Acolyte,” an investigation into a series of shocking crimes pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee) against a dangerous warrior from his past.

Oh Dal-soo began his acting career in theater in Busan, and since 2001 has been the head of theater company Singiru Manhwagyeong (“Mirage and Kaleidoscope”). Korean filmmakers have produced some of today’s most cutting-edge movies by borrowing the best elements from Hollywood, Chinese, and Japanese cinema, and mixing them their own unique cultural vision. So when it comes to the action genre, K-films are all over the map. K-actioners range from irreverent comedies to gritty brutal ultraviolence. Story arcs move from funny to savage in the blink of an eye.
Always well-crafted, Korean action films are filled with clever plot twists, refreshing characters that are fully fleshed out, and superb cinematography, However, Korean cinema tends to defy being as easily pigeonholed into genre boxes as Western contemporaries.
For example, Park Chan-wook’s disturbing Cannes winner, Oldboy, is more of psychological thriller than an action film, and yet the brilliant one-er hallway hammer fight is consistently referenced as one of the top examples of fight choreography from that year. Snowpiercer, which spawned a TNT series,...

Last September, “Squid Game” set a new precedent among all Netflix programs by amassing a first-month viewing hours total of 1.65 billion. It thus became the streamer’s most-watched show of all time, more than doubling the previous record set by “Money Heist” and even withstanding subsequent challenges from “Ozark,” “Bridgerton,” and “Stranger Things.” The Korean series has now earned 14 Emmy nominations, including one for Best Drama Series and another for star Lee Jung-jae. Having already triumphed at the SAG and Critics’ Choice Awards this spring, Lee now has a solid shot at becoming the first Asian-born Best Drama Actor Emmy winner and the first man to conquer the category for playing a fully non-English language role.

Still only 50, Choi Dong-hoon has been a front-runner among Korean directors for at least the past 15 years, with hits under his belt including “The Thieves,” “Assassination” and “Tazza: The High Rollers.” Now he is driving the Korean industry’s exploration of sci-fi.
Choi’s “Alienoid” recently played to U.S. audiences at the New York Asian Film Festival and will open in North American theaters from Aug. 26.
The film is a genre-bending caper in which two gurus from the Koryo Dynasty search for a time-bending blade and unexpectedly cross paths with modern-day folk hunting down a dangerous alien hidden inside a human body.
The result has plenty in common with “Jeon Woochi,” a period actioner that is another of Choi’s hits, but amped with richer visuals and cleverer VFX. The scale of its ambition fits the billing as the first part of a two-film franchise.

When the Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced earlier this month, many pundits were surprised to see three “Succession” stars nominated in the drama actor category: Jeremy Strong, Brian Cox and Kieran Culkin. After all, that had never happened before in this race, as the guild forces leads and supportings to compete against each other for only five slots. Is it possible there will now be a “Succession” SAG Award vote-split in this category? Co-nominees Lee Jung-jae (“Squid Game”) and Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”) certainly hope so, as they’d be the ones to benefit.
June-jae is one of the breakout performers of 2021, thanks to starring in Netflix’s number one show of all time, “Squid Game.” The Korean actor plays down-on-his-luck father Seong Gi-hun, who agrees to enter the deadly games in order to win money to support his family. One of the breakout stars of 2021, Lee Jung-jae from Netflix’s “Squid Game,” was recently recognized by the Critics Choice Awards with a nomination for Best Drama Actor. In order to win the trophy, the Korean star will need to take down “Succession’s” one-two punch of Jeremy Strong and Brian Cox, who lead Gold Derby’s predictions in first and second place, respectively. Might there be a vote split scenario that could help Jung-jae claim victory at his very first American award show?

After a six-year hiatus, Korean cinema is set to return to the Chinese big screen in wide release at last.
This Friday, Dec. 3, Chinese cinemas will run the 2020 comedy “Oh! My Gran (Oh! Moon-Hee),” official posters said Wednesday. Directed by Jeong Se-Gyo and written by Kim Soo-jin, the title stars Na Moon-hee as Moon-hee, the titular spirited grandma suffering from Alzheimer’s disease who, along with her dog, are the only witnesses of a hit-and-run accident that leaves her grandchild unconscious. The film tells the story of the sleuthing that ensues when she remembers a clue to the culprit.
When Seoul deployed the Thaad U.S. missile defense system in 2016, Beijing expressed its displeasure with a ban on Korean film and culture imports. A Korean film hasn’t had a proper theatrical outing in the mainland since 2015’s “The Assassination,” co-written and directed by Choi Dong-hoon.

The Korean writer and director team of Choi Suk-kwan and Lee Joon-ik had already established themselves as box office smashers with “Radio Days” and “The King and the Clown”, when they decided to shoot “The Happy Life”, and with actors like Kim Yoon-seok, Jung Ji-young and Kim Sang-ho the result was predefined as highly entertaining, a prediction it fulfilled utterly.
Gi-yeong is an unemployed slob that owes money due to a number of unsuccessful investments in the stock market, has utterly leaned upon his wife for financial support and has trouble with his adolescent daughter. However, when he is informed that Sang-woo, the leader of his college band has died, he attends a funeral where a drunken reunion among the former band members takes place, which gives him the idea to reinstate the band, Active Volcano. His former comrades though are not so eager, due to their business and financial engagements.

One of South Korea’s most profitable directors, Choi Dong-hoon has his last two films “The Thieves” and “Assassinaton” in the top ten highest grossing Korean films of all times at the South Korean box office. Even his two films preceding those, “Jeon Woo-chi: The Taoist Wizard” and “Tazza: The High Rollers”, feature in the top sixty on the same list. Though he was set to return with the thriller “Wiretap”, that project has since been shelved after its lead star Kim Woo-bin was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer. But he has now locked into his latest project, which will be a simultaneously filmed two-part sci-fi film featuring aliens.
Two of South Korea’s brightest young talents , Ryu Jun-yeol and Kim Tae-ri, have already signed on star in both parts of the series. While other actors are still to be confirmed, Choi Dong-hoon is known to work with superstars who often return for his future projects.

“That’s definitely stolen.” It’s a phrase that you never want to hear in a movie theater. However, it’s being said more and more as people flock to see Asian movies. While we think of plagiarism more along the lines of schoolwork and getting essays online, does it have a place in the film industry? And is it really a “plagiarism movie,” or just an adaptation of a classic Hollywood plot?
How, What, and Why?
No, this isn’t a movie, but we’re getting there! First, we need to look at what plagiarism is, versus adaptation. Plagiarism is stealing something. Like a movie theme. Adaptation is changing a movie theme to fit a certain demographic. Asian films are often accused of plagiarism because they are often similar to Hollywood classics. However, they usually fall under the category of adaptation, meaning that enough changes have been made. Now that we know the difference,...

If you had told me previously that the actor from such action thrillers as “The Chaser”, “The Yellow Sea”, “Haemoo” or “The Thieves” would make his directorial debut with a tender human drama about adultery, friendship, responsibility and growing up, while also having co-written the script for the film, I would have probably laughed you out of the room. Korean filmmakers have a knack for turning their national crises into riveting entertainment, choice examples being last year’s “A Taxi Driver” and “1987: When the Day Comes.” Following in that tradition, domestic hit “Default” (which opened Nov. 30 in the U.S.) manages to make currency crashes and the Asian Financial Crisis a juicy subject onscreen.
Set in 1997, when South Korea faced national bankruptcy, this financial thriller dramatizes the tense run-up to the Imf’s bailout, which the Korean media coined the nation’s “day of humiliation.” Racily paced yet boasting crystal-clear exposition, this hard-nosed and clear-eyed lesson on capitalist hubris bristles with relevance given the escalation of the Trade War.
It’s hard to believe that director Choi Kook-hee has only shot one feature film “Split” before making a work of such lofty ambition. With consummate skill, he pulls together three character arcs that represent the lower-middle class, the financial sector,...

South Korea's Choi Dong-hun has arguably become the nation's most reliable purveyor of big time, high gloss popcorn cinema with just enough depth to keep even critics happy. Choi has delivered a string of big time hits in Korea - a string that most recently delivered box office record setter The Thieves - and that string appears very much intact with the upcoming Assassination.Ha Jung-woo, Gianna Jun and Lee Jung-jae star in this period set tale of Korean fighters living in hiding in 1933 Shanghai setting out to assassinate a Japanese military commander. Choi's cast - as per usual - is absolutely top notch and the first trailer promises exactly the sort of big budget entertainment that has become his trademark. Very slick and lots...
