Australian films have an excellent track record on the subject of abductions, most notably Lantana, Ray Lawrence’s verdant nightmarish psychological drama, whilst Kim Farrant’s Strangerland portrayed the Australian outback as a place as dangerous and inhospitable as Mars with red dust infiltrating almost every scene. Now we have Thomas M. Wright’s The Stranger, which also revolves around the tale – loosely based on a true story – of a missing person, a boy kidnapped eight years prior and presumed dead, and the hunt for his kidnapper/killer.
Rather than go for lush night-time greens orextra-terrestrial reds, Miller’s film is a palette of greys, from the yellowy light of concrete car parks to the deeper tones of swirlingclouds and impending storms. Cinematographer Sam Chiplin could have added a little more to this colour scheme. While there are glimpses of fiery red and vistas of green forest, the overall tone is positively funereal.

Current B-grade thrillers so frequently have too little plot — often not much more than a starting premise — that it’s almost refreshing to see something like “The Weekend Away,” which has many more narrative complications than it can pull off. Certainly not with sufficient credibility, suspense or atmosphere, and not in one hectic hour and a half. Nonetheless, this Netflix original plunging Leighton Meester into peril on a Croatian holiday is fast-moving enough to provide a decent night’s disposable home entertainment for viewers whose expectations aren’t geared any higher.
Director Kim Farrant’s last two features both involved suspicions cast on unstable adults over missing children. Whereas in “Weekend’s” missing person scenario, our protagonist is pretty much the sole character who doesn’t end up looking guilty of something or other. London-based American Beth (Meester) arrives in Split for a long-planned getaway with old pal Kate (Christina Wolfe...

The Gossip Girl veteran stars as an American whose friend disappears on trip to Croatia, unraveling a host of secrets in swift if predictable fashion
An American wakes up in a cozy hotel in Croatia, violently hungover and dazed from the night before. The room is strewn with clothes, the counter dotted with empty wine glasses. An unexpected blackout has rendered Beth’s (Leighton Meester) memory of the previous few hours into a few incoherent shards, ones she fears putting together. Relatable content for many women at some point in their lives, and thus a compelling starting point for The Weekend Away, a brisk and absorbing if increasingly thin thriller about a girls’ holiday weekend gone wrong.

Nicholas Hamilton has accomplished more than most at the age of 21 but there remains one ambition he is yet to fulfil.
The actor and musician, who spent his teens starring in titles such as It, The Dark Tower, and Danger Close, returned to his Northern Nsw hometown of Alstonville last month after two and a half years in LA, and has his sights set on a nearby cultural hotspot.
“I’m excited about the prospect of being a Byron Bay musician,” he tells If.
“I started writing music just before I went to LA and never got the chance to be that Byron busking and gigging musician which, in a weird way, I’m really excited about.”
Hamilton’s time away proved to be productive, even with last year’s pandemic disruption.

‘Own The Sky’.
Director Gregory Read (Like Minds) describes the process of creating his recent project, feature documentary Own The Sky, as “chaos in the best possible form”.
The doc follows an old school friend of Read’s, David Mayman, on his quest to build and fly the world’s first jetpack. Along the way, Mayman faces setback after setback, including crashes and injury, though his obsession rarely abates.
Read first rolled camera back 2007, never quite knowing what to expect or if Mayman’s ambitions would ever come to be realised. At times, the process of completing the doc was uncertain as process of creating the jetpack itself.
Ultimately Own The Sky became a consuming, 12 year journey, one that meant Read would often have to travel at the drop of a hat to wherever Mayman was conducting tests, from Mexico to the Czech Republic.

Single mom Lizzie (Noomi Rapace) carpools through an idyllic Melbourne neighborhood with the hedgerows in a blur, which is “Angel of Mine” director Kim Farrant’s way of establishing that this woman on the verge of a suburban breakdown can’t see past her nose. Between her divorce, her constant crying, her mental hospital stays and her dead-end job as a makeup clerk, Lizzie’s young son (Finn Little) needs more of her affection. “He feels your darkness,” warns her ex Mike (Luke Evans), who’s threatening to file for full custody. Yet, Lizzie only has eyes for acquaintance Claire’s (Yvonne Strahovski) 7-year-old daughter Lola (Annika Whiteley), a perfect moppet who could be Lizzie’s own daughter, if her infant hadn’t died in a hospital fire — a plot point that screenwriters Luke Davies and David Regal delay until we’re itchy for the script to blurt it out,...

Directed by Wayne Blair and Leah Purcell, the six-part futuristic sci-fi drama co-produced by Goalpost and New Zealand.s Pukeko Pictures premieres at 9.30 pm on June 29 on the ABC and at 10 pm on June 28 on Sundance TV in the Us..

Welcome to Career Watch, a vocational checkup of top actors and directors, and those who hope to get there. In this edition we take on Nicole Kidman, who’s having something of a renaissance moment.
Bottom Line: Nicole Kidman is one of our most fearless actresses. She’s an Oscar perennial who constantly chases challenging material, edginess be damned. Yes, her most recent nomination stemmed from a very mild-mannered role as Dev Patel’s mother in the true-life Australian drama “Lion,” but for Kidman’s career it’s her exceptions that prove the rule.
She broadened her fanbase by producing, with Reese Witherspoon, the hugely popular and topical HBO drama series “Big Little Lies,” in which she co-starred as Celeste Wright, an elegant Monterey mom trapped in a sadomasochistic power struggle of spousal abuse with her husband Perry (Alexander Skarsgard). Critics’ raves and audience reaction will likely push Kidman to...

Nicholas Hamilton.
Young Australian actor Nicholas Hamilton has been cast in the film adapation of Stephen King's horror classic It.
The film will be directed by Andrés Muschietti (Mama), and is produced by Barbara Muschietti, Roy Lee, Dan Lin, David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith.
Hamilton caught the acting bug after playing Elvis Presley in a Year Five school production, the young actor told If in January.
"I loved the behind the scenes [stuff] and all the rehearsals, and after the night of the play I went to my Mum and asked her what I had to do to get on TV", he said.
The teenager first joined a small agency in Lismore before being referred to Catherine Poulton Management in Melbourne, who soon secured him a part in Kim Farrant's Strangerland.
He's since starred in Captain Fantastic with Viggo Mortensen, which bowed at Sundance before heading to Cannes last month.

Now that Pennywise and the preteen Losers Club’ (with the exception of Beverly) have been cast in Andres Muschietti’s It remake, the secondary roles are starting to fill out. Case in point: Henry Bowers — the sadistic, racist, anti-Semitic, misogynistic and every other bad thing you can think of high school bully who torments the “Losers” throughout the summer of 1958 and is driven insane under the title demon’s influence — will be played in his early years by Australian actor Nicholas Hamilton. He portrayed Nicole Kidman and Joseph Fiennes’ son in last year’s Strangerland and will next be seen in Captain Fantastic opposite Viggo Mortensen. Here he is showing some playful 'tude at Captain Fantastic's Cannes premiere back in May: Photo Credit: Ian Gavan/Getty Images I just love his commitment to this character. As we recently discussed, there are changing times ahead in the indie film landscape with Netflix and Amazon muscling onto the scene, but the problems facing Alchemy have more to do with a string of bad fortune. Of all the films they released since last April — which include "Welcome To Me" starring Kristen Wiig, "Strangerland" starring Nicole Kidman, "The Runner" starring Nicolas Cage, and Gaspar Noé's 3D sextacular "Love" — only one movie crossed $1 million domestic, and that was the documentary "Meet The Patels." You can't blame streaming services for that, it appears Alchemy is facing some trouble. Listen to our interview with Strangerland writer Michael Kinirons here. An Irish/Australian co-production, Strangerland uses the breathtaking vistas of the Australian outback (brought to life beautifully by cinematographer P.J. Dillon) as the backdrop for the tale of the Parker family, who have had to relocate to a remote desert town because of 15 year old daughter Lily’s (Madison Brown) illicit relationship with a teacher. Mother Katherine (Nicole Kidman), father Matthew (Joseph Fiennes), and even her brother Tom (Nicholas Hamilton) have grown to resent Lily, and each other, for leaving their home, especially as she hasn’t changed her sexually promiscuous ways. When both Lily and Tom go missing on the eve of a massive dust storm, a search begins, bringing in Hugo Weaving’s pessimistic detective David Rae, which pushes Katherine and Matthew’s already strained relationship to breaking point. The central performances of Kidman, Fiennes, and Weaving are the heart and soul of.

Not that it’s a contest, but we’re fan of lists here at Tfe even as we understand they’re more jumping off discussion points rather than monolithic assertions of quality or taste. And so find below a list of 15 actors who were extra hardworking and who you couldn’t have missed seeing as they were everywhere from superhero...
