It’s a story — the attempted genocide of Europe’s Jews by the Nazis and their willing executioners — that has been told many times before. But, say the creators of the new German TV drama The Interpreter of Silence, it’s a story that needs to be told again and again.
The five-part limited series, which bowed on Hulu in the U.S. and on Disney+ worldwide Nov. 15, is up for this year’s Critics Choice Awards in the best foreign-language TV series category. The period drama will go up against the South Korean series Bargain, The Glory, Mask Girl and Moving, the French crime series Lupin, and the Italian mafia drama The Good Mothers.
Set in Frankfurt in 1963, The Interpreter of Silence follows the events of Eva Bruhns, a 24-year-old German woman, played by Katharina Stark, who gets a job as a Polish-to-German interpreter in the Auschwitz trials, the...

It will boast Paramount’s blockbusters, exclusive originals and hit shows in 4K Uhd, HDR10, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Premium subscribers will also be able to tap into four concurrent streams, instead of the two streams that come with the standard plan.
The advertising tier, meanwhile, will roll out in select international markets, including Australia and Canada, starting in 2024. In Mexico and Brazil, Paramount+ will keep its mobile-only streaming subscription which launched in April.

South Korean pop culture is rife with sinister stories of systemic breakdown and authority not to be trusted, from Netflix’s runaway hit Squid Game to the more recent Paramount+ series Bargain, which involves an organ harvesting/prostitution ring busted up by a cataclysmic earthquake. With two years of reflection, it isn’t surprising that the unprecedented success of Netflix’s Squid Game wasn’t instantly reproducible. But it’s very surprising how few of television’s biggest platforms have even attempted to reproduce that success. There has probably been a visible uptick in available Korean programming in the States but — perhaps in tacit recognition of the fact that Squid Game became Squid Game because of its stealthy word-of-mouth explosion — there hasn’t been an evident rise in shows getting a big promotional push in the hopes of becoming the Next Squid Game.
If nothing else, Paramount+ is giving a push to the new six-part drama Bargain, from writer-director Jeon Woo-sung. It’s frequently easy to see why.
Bargain is not, of course, the next Squid Game. Nothing is. Or when something is, it will probably emerge out of nowhere.
But it isn’t a wholly inappropriate comparison,...

"I won the auction! Where do I get my kidney?" Paramount+ has revealed a new official trailer for a Korean survival thriller series called Bargain, now with English subtitles. This debuted in Korea last fall, and it's playing at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival soon as well. It's a combination of survival stories: an earthquake hits trapping a bunch of people in a collapsed building. Inside it is an organ-trafficking ring, posing as a brothel to lure in men. More from TIFF: "Based on Lee Chung-hyun’s award-winning short film of the same name that premiered at TIFF '16, this darkly funny, endlessly entertaining, and unpredictable series keeps us guessing what might be around every corner. Every character ― buyers, sellers, and bystanders alike ― is thrown into a desperate struggle to survive not only the crumbling building, but also the circumstances that brought them there in the first place." The series stars Jin Sun-kyu,...

Bob Bakish, CEO of Paramount Global, has found himself on his second earnings call discuss a strike in Hollywood.

The ongoing writers and actor strikes. were saddened that as an industry, we couldn’t come to an agreement that would have prevented this. Our partnership with the creative community is critical to the health of our industry, so we remain hopeful for a timely resolution, and we are committed to finding a path forward. Streaming services Paramount+ and Tving have greenlighted two new jointly-developed Korean TV series. They are the product of an ongoing relationship between parent companies Paramount Global and Korea’s Cj Enm.
They are action thriller “A Bloody Lucky Day” and period drama “Queen Woo.”
Korean TV content has been a growth vector for international and regional streaming platforms in Asia. Competition for new originals is fierce and expensive, but Korean drama and increasingly, unscripted shows, continues to attract critical and commercial kudos.
Paramount+ said that new Korean drama series “Yonder” has been the most-watched international show in the U.S. in its first week of availability (since Aprile 11). Its upcoming Korean series “Bargain” earned the best screenplay award at Canneseries on Wednesday and will upload in summer this year.

Power Play, a 1970s-set comedy that plays with the conventions of period TV, docudrama and political satire, has won the top prize for best series at this year’s Canneseries television festival.
The series stars Kathrine Thorborg Johansen as Gro Harlem Brundtland, a young doctor and women’s choice activist in the 1970s who, through a series of accidents, stumbles into politics and, while the government around her implodes, learns to play the power game, rising the ranks to become Norway’s first female prime minister. The project, which plays like a comedic version of Danish political series Borgen, also took the best music honor at Canneseries for Kåre Christoffer Vestrheim, Andrea Louise Horstad, Kristoffer Lo and Eivind Helgerød.
Created by showrunner Johan Fasting and directed by Yngvild Sve Flikke, the series was produced by Motlys and Fremantle label Novemberfilm for Nrk / Ndr in Norway. Power Play is being sold worldwide by REinvent International Sales.

Bargain, Carthago, Curduroy’ among big winners.
Norwegian political satire Power Play was named best series as the sixth annual Canneseries (April 14-19) came to a close on the Riveria.
The series from Norway’s Nrk was the last of the 10-strong competition titles to screen at the six-day event, but triumphed with the festival’s top prize in addition to the award for best music that jury member and The Police drummer Stewart Copeland called “downright revolutionary”.
Power Play is based on the true story of the bid to become prime minster by pro-abortion ecologist politician Gro Harlem Brundtland in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

Cannes — News of the death of Mip-tv looked greatly exaggerated if the 2023 edition, which played out over April 17-19 in Cannes, was anything to go by, with Lucy Smith, director of MipTV and Mipcom, Cannes two TV trade fairs, announcing final figures of 5,560 participants, including 5,510 on-site delegates.
That said, attendance was sizeably down on pre-pandemic levels – 9,500 attendees in 2019 – with major European drama sales companies literally counting the cost of attendance and exhibition space versus Mip-driven sales. In a fast-evolving TV landscape, the future and identity of MipTV still remains uncertain. 10 takeaways from this year’s edition:
MipTV: The Impact of Brute Market Forces
Two major macro market trends, both presented by Ampere Analysis’ Guy Bisson’ in an early MipTV panel, go a long way to explaining 2023 MipTV. Global streaming commissions in the fourth quarter of 2022 were the lowest in over two years; unscripted represented 30.35% of streaming commissions last quarter 2019, 50.3% Oct.

Norwegian political satire “Power Play” proved unbeatable at Canneseries, just like its headstrong protagonist, picking up awards for best series and music.
The show, focusing on Norway’s first female Prime Minister, Gro Harlem Brundtland, and starting out in the 1970s, turned out to be a timely proposition, as noted by showrunner Johan Fasting, who co-wrote with Silje Storstein and Kristin Grue.
“It’s hard to persevere in politics, especially for women. We wanted to go behind the scenes of social democracy as well, see how it has dissolved and turned into what we have today. It felt like the right time to look at the mechanisms of power,” he told Variety earlier this week.
While the show delves into local politics, its youthful “punk” attitude and humor, which already drew early comparisons to the works of Armando Iannucci, seems to have paid off, seducing jurors Lior Raz, Zabou Breitman,...

First the good news: the weather was spectacular. For three days, the international television market MIPTV, which wraps up in Cannes on Wednesday, was blessed with the clear blue skies and blinding sunshine that have always been the main attraction of this bit of the Mediterranean.
But if the beaches, cafes and seaside restaurants along the Croisette felt like a postcard paradise, the market itself — downstairs in the Palais, the concrete bunker by the Cannes harbor that hosts MIPTV — had a more dystopian vibe. The long, empty, echoing halls and bare walls mark the spots which, in previous years, would have been jam-packed with splashy stands from the U.S. studios and the super-indies: Fremantle, Banijay, All3Media and the like. In their place were a few lonely outposts from public broadcasters and a handful of second-tier sales outfits. It looked like a once-bustling megamall that’s lost its anchor stores...

In Black Bird, Apple TV’s dramatic take on the true crime memoir about a suspected serial killer Larry Hall, star Taron Egerton admits that his portrayal of FBI operative Jimmy Keene differs from the real-life person who helped authorities to find Hall’s victims.
The psychological thriller actually zeroes in on Jimmy’s evolution as a former high school football hero-turned-alleged drug dealer who’s sent to prison to elicit a confession from Hall. (Keene was cleared of all charges).
The six-parter from Dennis Lehane dropped on Apple last summer.
“Dennis’ angle on the show was to take a guy from A to B — A being a lack of self awareness in terms of having a moral code, an attitude toward to women, to B, [a person] who has discovered some humanity and some responsibility to everyone around him,” explained Edgerton on Sunday during Deadline’s Contenders TV event. “He does grow, but it costs him dearly.
