- Mel Gibson teaches Hamlet to a group of high school drama students.
- Mell Gibson gives his interpretation of Hamlet leaving out any mention of the story of Fortinbras (The Prince of Norway). Hamlet discovers from his father's ghost that his brother Claudius had dispatched his father Old Hamlet. He has been tasked with revenge. To accomplish this Hamlet must pretend to be mad. The story gets convoluted as Hamlet must verify this information by putting on a play. "The play's the thing / Wherein I'll catch the conscience of the king," He confronts his mother, Queen Gertrude and in the process, he thinks it is Claudius, and accidentally kills Polonius, his ex-girlfriend's father, and a nosy parker. this gives Claudius an excuse to send Hamlet to England as mad; with secret instructions to have Hamlet dispatched. Back in Denmark Ophelia, Polonius's daughter, is distraught, goes mad herself, and commits suicide. After Hamlet exchanges letters to have Rosencrance and Guildenstern dispatched, returns to Denmark. At a Graveyard Hamlet finds the skull of Yorick. He gives the speech "Alas, poor Yorick!". There he is confronted by Laertes brother of Ophelia Is told by Claudius that Hamlet is responsible for the death of Polonius and Ophelia. the kind sets up a duel/contest between Hamlet and Laertes. Of course, the contest is rigged two ways Laertes sward (they use swards, not foils) has poison on the tip. Claudius puts a poisonous pearl in Hamlet's drink. One way or the other Hamlet is doomed. In a quirk of fate, Larates is also stuck by the poison sward, and Queen Gertrude drinks the poison cup. we get 'Now cracks a noble heart. Good night, sweet prince,/And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest, spoken by Hamlet's friend Horatio.
