Theaters face an uncertain future as Americans reportedly prefer streaming at home over traditional cinema experiences.
Netflix has once again been breathing life into a disappointing movie, as Dwayne Johnson’s failed Dceu takeover attempt, Black Adam, has soared into the platform’s global Top Ten. Hellboy (2019) enters Netflix's Global Top 10, despite its critical failure, with 7.5 million hours viewed. Despite being a box office flop, Hellboy reached the sixth spot on Netflix's weekly chart. Hellboy: The Crooked Man will bring the demonic lead back to screens, with a story set in the 1950s Appalachia.
David Harbour's poorly-reviewed Hellboy enters Netflix's Global Top 10 chart. The 2019 movie saw Harbour take on the role of the titular demonic paranormal investigator, as an ancient and powerful queen brings about the end of days. Hoping to revive the franchise over eleven years after Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy: The Golden Army, the 2019 reboot paled in comparison to its predecessor, with critics panning it as unimaginative and unable to keep audiences invested.

It wasn’t until I started writing this article that I remembered something. A new Hellboy movie, titled Hellboy: The Crooked Man, is coming soon, likely to see release sometime this year.
Ketchup Entertainment acquired the rights last year to Millennium Media’s reboot, which will star Jack Kesy in the title role. But we’ll report more on that project in the coming months.
In the meantime, Deadline has announced today that a documentary on Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, titled Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters, is also coming soon.
Deadline reports that Nacelle (“The Toys That Made Us”) has acquired the doc, with no release date announced at this time. The documentary “tells the story of Mignola — one of the most successful independent comic book creators, who has inspired generations of writers and artists — and how he came to create a world-renowned comic book universe.

Sci-fi & fantasy often blend, but essential distinctions separate them. Sci-fi explores possibilities, while fantasy explores impossibilities. Dune & Star Wars both blend sci-fi & fantasy elements in their storytelling. They build imaginative worlds with futuristic and mystical aspects. Avatar, Thor: Ragnarok, Godzilla, Hellboy, & other films mix sci-fi & fantasy themes to create unique cinematic experiences.
Many sci-fi films combine the genre with fantasy elements, and some stand out for seamlessly blending them. Sci-fi and fantasy are often considered to go hand in hand, as some of the biggest titles in sci-fi, like Star Wars and Dune, could also be considered fantasy. However, essential distinctions separate the genres. Science fiction is a genre that explores real possibilities for humankind, exploring concepts like advanced technology, dystopian societies, and space travel. They're speculative "What if?" stories, exemplified by many of the best sci-fi movies of all time, like Blade Runner or 2001: A Space Odyssey.

If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.
Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

Perlman's role in Hellboy was too brief, wasting perfect casting. Hellboy's plot is overstuffed, cramming in too many elements. Del Toro's Hellboy universe still stands as the best comic adaptation.
Rewatching Hellboy 20 years after its release highlights a handful of harsh truths about the movie, as well as its titular character and the hero's cinematic legacy. 2004’s Hellboy remains one of director Guillermo del Toro’s best movies – or, at least, one of his most fondly remembered – thanks in large part to its largely faithful adaptation of Mike Mignola’s comics. Following the story of a demon summoned to Earth to bring about its destruction but instead raised by the forces of good to be the world’s greatest paranormal investigator, Hellboy is a singularly unique comic book adaptation.

At the beginning of its third season, "Star Trek: Discovery" went through something of a soft reboot, with fans often debating about what worked and what did not. Thanks to a complex season-two story about a malevolent machine intelligence, the U.S.S. Discovery was forced through a portal in time, depositing it in the year 3188, about 900 from their starting point. The crew of the Discovery found the future to be bitter and broken. It seems a galaxy-wide cataclysm — nicknamed The Burn — destroyed every active starship a few centuries earlier. The last remaining scraps of the Federation went into hiding while a vicious crime syndicate, the Emerald Chain, rose to power in its absence. The Discovery, equipped with now-ancient technology, had to fight the Emerald Chain, locate the Federation, and attempt to help a galaxy they didn't understand.

The horror movie was written and directed by Australian filmmaker Kiah Roache-Turner, whose 2014 film Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead is one of the best underrated zombie movies according to Screen Rant. Roache-Turner’s other work includes DaemonRunner, Nekrotronic, and 2021’s Wyrmwood: Apocalypse. The new movie continues Roache-Turner’s penchant for genre thrills, though it is the director’s first creature feature.

Some of the best superhero movies are not part of the DC or Marvel universes and come from original ideas or other graphic novel publishers. These movies often provide a refreshing take on the superhero genre and explore compelling sub-genres. Stand-out examples include Hellboy, Mystery Men, Super, Megamind, Chronicle, Hancock, Dredd, The Mask, The Crow, and The Incredibles.
Despite DC and Marvel dominating the genre, some of the best superhero movies don't fall under their purview within the Dcu or MCU. Superhero movies have been dominated by the DC and Marvel movie timelines for several decades, but the surge in popularity of superheroes in cinema preceded the cinematic franchises that made the genre synonymous with DC and Marvel characters. In fact, some of the most compelling characters came from original ideas that challenged the comic book status quo.

Welcome to Sales to Astonish, a new column in association with comics retailer The Unreality Store, in which Matthew De Monti brings us news on comic sales and the general moves in the comic market over the past month or so!
To start the Year in Review I’ll start with looking at sales by product type and then touch upon some general themes at the end.
Marvel Comics
2023 for me has undoubtedly been all about Marvel with back issue sales accounting for around 60% of the year’s sales. I’ve been staggered by the continued demand for Marvel back issues, especially titles from the late 80’s and early 90’s that I can remember hitting the shelves. Many of these issues, especially the likes of X-Men and Spiderman had print runs into the hundreds of thousands every month so you would think that there is an abundance of copies out there.

John Wick's nickname, Baba Yaga, inaccurately refers to him as the "Russian boogeyman," causing confusion for those familiar with the real Baba Yaga from Russian folklore. While John Wick and Baba Yaga do not share many similarities, the use of the nickname adds to the distinct vibe and lore of the John Wick franchise, contributing to its success. Baba Yaga has been referenced in various other media, including The Witcher and Hellboy, but John Wick has become practically synonymous with the name in popular culture.
Basil Iwanyk and Derek Kolstad’s action thriller franchise John Wick follows Keanu Reeves' titular and stylish assassin feared throughout the Russian criminal underworld as Baba Yaga — John Wick's nickname — which supposedly means boogeyman. In 1954, Gojira changed the course of cinematic history. While it wasn’t the first monster movie, it almost instantly became one of the most famous and popular. Created in response to Japan’s well-justified fear of nuclear weapons, Godzilla (the Americanized version of his name) is an ancient giant sea monster awakened by the atomic blasts of WWII. Originally, Godzilla had a straightforward goal: smashing the nearest city of destructive humans. However, over the decades, he’s become the king of the monsters and has fought with and against countless other famous cinematic beasts, most famously King Kong in King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962).
Still, when it comes to movie monsters, Godzilla remains almost impossible to beat. He may have started by stomping human cities, but he’s since become our greatest defense against other threats to humanity. This role begs the question: what cinematic monsters could defeat Godzilla? There aren’t many,...

Many superhero films, including those from major brands like Marvel and DC, have underperformed at the box office for various reasons. Some of these films, like Mystery Men and Hellboy II: The Golden Army, have developed a cult following despite their initial lack of success. Films like Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad faced challenges such as poor marketing and release timing, but still offer entertaining and unique takes on the superhero genre.
While superhero films typically perform well at the box office, many from Marvel, DC, and other brands have underperformed. Whether audiences didn't recognize the character or poor reviews led to people losing interest, several superhero flicks have flopped at the box office. The Last Voyage of the Demeter producer Bradley J. Fischer confirmed that Dracula’s nemesis Van Helsing was originally going to appear at the end of the horror thriller movie.
Speaking with Syfy Wire, Fischer detailed what would have happened in the cut Van Helsing cameo in The Last Voyage of the Demeter. "We went through a lot of different approaches to the story, but nothing that was wildly different than the movie that we ended up with," Fischer said. "We actually had one ending for quite a while. The scene in the tavern was Clemens [Corey Hawkins] being approached by a strange, shadowy dude, who starts talking to him, seems to have some knowledge of the experiences that he went through, and introduces himself as Van Helsing. Then we kind of left it there."

Hellboy as a samurai in feudal Japan would be a charming and fitting concept for a "What If?" scenario. Japan has been featured in Hellboy stories before and could provide a rich setting for new adventures. Francesco Francavilla, known for his pulp-inspired art, would be a perfect fit to illustrate a Hellboy story set in any historical setting.
Hellboy has traveled the world fighting monsters, but one piece of fan art from Francesco Francavilla has Big Red actually becoming a samurai in feudal Japan in an epic reference to famed actors like Toshiro Mifune and Tatsuya Nakadai.
Shared to Instagram, celebrated artist Francesco Francavilla posted the sketch he did from 2009, which sees Hellboy drawing a katana in preparation for an epic battle with some giant monster or other, no doubt. Check out Francavilla’s awesome work:

Hellboy is one of the most successful superhero comic characters outside of the Marvel/DC duopoly; his adventures bridge the gaps between fantasy, horror, and good old-fashioned pulp.
In 1944, Nazis led by Grigori Rasputin opened a portal to Hell to summon the harbinger of the apocalypse. They succeeded — the being in question was a demon child named Anung Un Rama ( "And upon his brow is set a crown of flame"). The Nazis were defeated by Allied soldiers and the child was adopted by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm and named Hellboy. Professor "Broom" raised his son into the top agent for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (The Bprd); Hellboy approaches his job with the attitude of a working stiff and is really unenthusiastic about his destiny to destroy the world.

Doug Jones has had a diverse and underrated career in Hollywood, starting with his roles as a mime and contortionist in TV shows and commercials. Jones gained recognition for his collaborations with Guillermo del Toro, notably for his portrayal of Abe Sapien in the Hellboy films and the Faun in Pan's Labyrinth. His most famous role is Captain Saru in Star Trek: Discovery, but his work behind the makeup of various characters often steals the spotlight in his scenes.
An American actor, contortionist, and mime artist, Doug Jones was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, as the youngest of four brothers. For college, he attended Ball State University, which he represented as the "Charlie Cardinal" mascot. He utilized his established miming skills to accurately portray the anthropomorphic bird, and after graduation, he dove headfirst into the realm of television and film, albeit in a rather unorthodox fashion.

Luc Besson's "The Fifth Element" certainly has one of the most eclectic casts of any '90s blockbuster. On one hand, you have a variety of established actors. Then-beloved action hero Bruce Willis was the film's centerpiece, propped by British thespians like Gary Oldman and Ian Holm, both of whom had garnered recognition in major Hollywood blockbusters. On the other hand, you have a variety of unknown variables: Milla Jovovich, a young Russian model just getting her start on film; Chris Tucker, a hyperactive comedian slowly on the rise after "Friday," which also just so happened to feature "Fifth Element" co-star Tommy "Tiny" Lister Jr., an actor-turned-wrestler-turned-actor-again. Besson's call sheet of obscure talents goes on and on. However, it is exactly the director's ethno-galactically diverse, if often aesthetically disparate, vision for the film that makes the cast of "The Fifth Element" fit surprisingly well together.

Thq Nordic and developer Pieces Interactive have pushed their upcoming Alone in the Dark remake again. Originally pushed to January 16 to accommodate for a hectic October, the publisher has moved the release to March 20, 2024.
The decision to move the release date again, according to Thq Nordic, was to give the team more time for polish, and to avoid “potential crunch” over the Christmas holidays. In addition Thq Nordic and Pieces Interactive “want to ensure that the game not only meets but exceeds the expectations of the community, especially with the outstanding performances of Hollywood stars David [Barbour] and Jodie [Comer] as the main protagonists.”

Before he became known as the sicko behind the "Terrifier" franchise, writer, director, and editor, Damien Leone was just a 12-year-old kid studying documentaries about the "Thriller" music video and legendary makeup artist Tom Savini. As Leone told Dread Central, "Those two VHSes were the first time I ever saw makeup artists creating monsters and zombies." He says he watched the behind-the-scenes footage around age eight, and was teaching himself to emulate them by age 12. Decades later, he ended up responsible for the makeup behind one of the creepiest monster designs in recent horror history: Art the Clown.

In Stuart Baird's 2002 film "Star Trek: Nemesis," Tom Hardy plays Shinzon, a human clone of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), grown in a lab by the dastardly spies in the Romulan Empire. When their clone plot didn't quite turn out the way that they wanted, the Romulans disavowed Shinzon's existence and sent him as a young boy to be enslaved in a Reman mine. The Remans were a cousin species of the Romulans that had been enslaved for many generations. Shinzon would grow up among the goblin-looking Remans, sharing their plight. Perhaps possessed of Picard's knack for leadership, Shizon would eventually lead a Reman uprising against the Romulans. "Nemesis" was the first time Trekkies ever caught a glimpse of the Remans. The first Ron Perlman performance I saw was in HellBoy, and since that day, he has fascinated me as an actor. Sam Shepherd, actor-playwright, once said about Harry Dean Stanton, the great character actor, that he is one of those actors who knows his ‘face is a story.’ I would extend that compliment to Ron Perlman, whose entire body is a story in a sense. The long face, the heavy set, those intense beady eyes—his entire body lends itself to a mysterious subtext that the filmmaker might not even have hoped to communicate. Perlman has generally been seen as a force to be reckoned with, and indeed he is, but in The Baker, he gets to apply his craft to tell a touching story about a grandfather and granddaughter, bringing out a tender side of him. He doesn’t need to do much, as he does everything with just...

The most popular movie franchises typically run for multiple installments, with some still going strong today. However, there are also times when franchises start out promising with their potential but unceremoniously end after their sophomore outing. Several reasons contributed to these franchises' sudden pauses, whether because of a lackluster box office reception, critical backlash, or plans for a third movie falling apart.
These hopeful franchises could have kept going, but low reception of the second film or failed attempts at creating a third prevented that from happening. From Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy to The Amazing Spider-Man films starring Andrew Garfield, these franchises pulled the plug after two movies.

Spyder Dobrofsky is probably not a name you would expect to see credited on Christmas-themed TV movies, but that’s exactly how Dobrofsky got started out, working on the scripts for such flicks as The Housewives of the North Pole and One Christmas Wish, as well as Mom’s Day Away. When he made his feature directorial debut, it was on a movie called Spiral, which was something you’d expect to see a Spyder credited with: a mystery thriller. Now Deadline has broken the news that Dobrofsky is working on a holiday horror movie called Down Below… and he has assembled a solid cast for the project. The legendary Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight) stars alongside Bai Ling (The Crow), Alexis Knapp (Pitch Perfect), and Doug Jones, who is best known for his creature (or heavily made up) performances in films like The Shape of Water, Hellboy, and Hocus Pocus.

The episode of Revisited covering Hellboy II: The Golden Army was Written by Emilie Black, Edited by Ric Solomon, Narrated by Niki Minter, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Following the beloved Hellboy adaptation that was released in 2004 by Guillermo Del Toro, fans wanted more. As reviewed on a previous video, that one is excellent, so it was not surprising when the sequel was announced. Thus, in 2008, Hellboy II: The Golden Army (watch it Here) was released, and it ruled!
Let’s start with the rating here and it’s a complicated one for me. It’s actually hard to rate it because my reviewer brain, the part of me that is highly cinematically educated wants to give it an eight out of ten, which isn’t bad, but my heart wants to say it can’t be rated on a normal scale.

Guillermo del Toro is a master at creating strange creatures and bringing breathtaking visuals to his projects, as seen in Pan's Labyrinth. Del Toro's Star Wars project would have focused on the character Jabba the Hutt, exploring his backstory and rise to power. Unfortunately, the film never came to be, but del Toro remains focused on his own films and continues to work on passion projects.
Is there a director working today who is as out-of-the-box yet completely accessible as Guillermo del Toro? His films make people smile, squirm, and cheer all at the same time. With a resume and creative streak that exceeds many of his contemporaries, he is a director whose projects are anticipated and appreciated. It is always a pleasure to see what he will get up to next.
However, like other directors, del Toro has a few projects that never quite made it. One of these...

The scrapped “Coyote Vs. Acme” has now garnered a filmmakers vs. Warner Bros. campaign on social media.
On private Facebook group Crew Stories, “Coyote Vs. Acme” crew member Nate Bannister posted (and gave IndieWire permission to quote) his frustration. “I was Key Alm [assistant location manager] on this movie, almost died of stress pulling all the permits, we closed down the entirety of downtown Albuquerque, I had to call in every favor of my career to close an overpass with a half a days notice, I got so many angry calls from neighbors, business owners, etc day and night, working on this movie almost tore apart my relationship with my fiancée,” he wrote. “Why do I work in this industry?”
The live-action and animated hybrid film starring John Cena was officially axed by Warner Bros. November 9 as a tax write-off for its Q3 earnings, even though the film had been finished. The $70 million...

In a career that stretches back more than four decades, Ron Perlman has had few characters more memorable — or more enjoyable — than Hellboy, which he’s played in two films (2004’s Hellboy and 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army). Perlman has made little secret of the fact that he’d love to play the character at least one more time. Granted, when he first took the role, the movie seemed like a longshot to become successful. As Perlman told us at the time of Hellboy II’s opening, getting the movie made and into theaters was “an uphill battle” all the way.(Click on the media bar below to hear Ron Perlman) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Ron_Peralman_HellBoy_.mp3 The Hellboy movies are available on DVD, Blu-Ray, 4K, and most digital platforms.
