Boy Kills World is an extremely stylized dystopian action thriller revenge film directed by Moritz Mohr from a screenplay by Tyler Burton Smith and Arend Remmers. Based on the story by Remmers and Mohr, the brilliant action film is set in a dystopian film where the Van Der Koy family rules the city. We follow the story of a young boy known only as Boy who is hell-bent on becoming a living breathing weapon to take revenge against the Van Der Koy family. Boy Kills World stars Bill Skarsgård in the lead role with Jessica Rothe, Andrew Koji, Famke Janssen, H. Jon Benjamin, Yayan Ruhian, Cameron Crovetti, Michelle Dockery, Brett Gelman, Quinn Copeland, and Sharlto Copley starring in supporting roles. So, if you loved the stylized action, dark comedy, and brutal violence in Boy Kills World here are some similar films you could watch next.

If the best revenge is living well, it is a truism that has not yet taken root for Hamid (a riveting Adam Bessa), the dark, scarred heart of Jonathan Millet’s brooding, gripping “Ghost Trail.” Outside his soon-to-be-revealed mission, Hamid barely has a life at all, placing him firmly in the genre tradition of the taciturn, traumatized hero whose obsessive pursuit of his quarry leaves little room for anything beyond the constant, careful stoking of his rage, grief and survivor’s guilt. Millet’s expertly tooled movie is far from the first to derive its moral stakes from the desire to find some measure of redress for the victims and survivors of political violence, but it is among the best to also crossbreed this familiar archetype with the urgency and topicality of the Syrian refugee crisis.

Blumhouse has announced a trio of upcoming horror movie release dates today, the first of which is the official date for the sequel to hit video game movie Five Nights at Freddy’s.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 will release in theaters December 5, 2025.
Released in theaters and available for streaming on Peacock on the same day, the Emma Tammi-directed Five Night’s at Freddy’s was Blumhouse’s highest grossing movie of all time. In other words, it’s no surprise that the sequel was quickly greenlit.
In last year’s horror movie, “After accepting a security guard job from Steve, Mike (Josh Hutcherson; The Hunger Games Franchise) discovers an abandoned restaurant may actually be haunted by murderous animatronics.”
Two other upcoming Blumhouse sequels have also received new dates, with M3GAN 2.0 now coming to theaters on June 27, 2025, previously announced for May 16, 2025.

Solitary confinement, theoretically used only when a prisoner is at high risk of harm to or from others, has long been regarded as a severe punitive measure best applied in small doses. The United Nations’ “Mandela Rules” recommend inmates be placed in such conditions for no more than 15 days, to avoid significant damage to physical or psychological health. Yet “The Strike” spotlights one U.S. correctional facility where until recently convicts were held in solitary for decades on end. JoeBill Munoz and Lucas Guilkey’s documentary, premiering at Hot Docs, provides a polished, informative overview of protests — both in and outside the prison — that eventually succeeded in changing abusive policies.
When California opened the Pelican Bay State Prison in 1989, it was considered a model of its “supermax” type, designed as a maximum security institution for “the worst of the worst.” At the time, the “War on Drugs” (then “three-strikes” laws) had greatly increased prison populations,...

It may have taken forever for the first Five Nights at Freddy’s movie to finally get off the ground, but it’s officially full steam ahead for the sequel.
Expect to see Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 next Halloween season, as it’s currently set for Fall 2025 release.
The announcement came via CinemaCon and social media, and arrives shortly after producer Jason Blum teased a behind the scenes photo from inside Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. The sequel hadn’t been confirmed at the time of his posting, but this news makes it official.

It may have taken forever for the first Five Nights at Freddy’s movie to finally get off the ground, but it looks like Blumhouse is wasting no time getting to work on the sequel.
Producer Jason Blum has taken to Twitter today to share a behind the scenes photo from inside Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, where the team is working on what we can only assume are the animatronic effects for upcoming sequel Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. Jim Henson’s Creature Shop of course provided the standout animatronics in last year’s hit movie.
Blum teases in his tweet this afternoon, “Jim Henson’s Creature Shop is working their magic again! We aren’t sure what they’re working on, but we know it will be great!”
While the sequel had not been officially announced, it feels pretty safe to say that this tweet from Blum today is that official announcement.

Throughout his film career, Irish actor Michael Fassbender has been unafraid to take risks, tackling a wide variety of unusual roles, from an almost-human robot and a Ira freedom fighter to a legendary psychiatrist and a musician wearing a papier-mâche head. It’s a filmography that would daunt some actors and inspire still others, and for Fassbender, it’s a film career that has only really just begun.
Along the way, Fassbender has been able to be a part of an enviable mix of breakthrough independent films, searing personal dramas, and even a few franchise moneymakers. Most importantly, he has collaborated with such premier filmmakers as Ridley Scott, Danny Boyle and Quentin Tarantino, with perhaps the most significant relationship in his career being with with filmmaker Steve McQueen, whose three-film collaboration with Fassbender have raised the bar for each man to new artistic heights.

The ever-busy Japanese character actor Tadanobu Asano — currently having a moment as one of the stars of Disney’s hit samurai series Shōgun — has joined the cast of Thai director Pen-ek Ratanaruang’s upcoming culinary thriller Morte Cucina. The actor and director last collaborated two decades ago on the romantic crime film Last Life in the Universe (2003), which was Thailand’s official submission to the Oscars that year and won Asano the best actor award at the Venice Film Festival.
Set in contemporary Bangkok, Morte Cucina follows a talented young female chef named Sao who has a chance encounter with a man who sexually abused her when she was a teen. “Using her talents in the kitchen, Sao sets her plan of revenge in motion — achieving a rather unexpected result,” the film’s logline reads.

Since Cillian Murphy just became the first Irish-born actor to win the Best Actor Oscar, I thought it would be appropriate to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a list of the most notable Irish actors who have been honored by the Academy with either Oscar gold or a nomination.
1. Cillian Murphy
Murphy has played non-Irish roles so often and so well that some people may not realize or remember that he is Irish. His best Irish films include Breakfast on Pluto and The Wind that Shakes the Barley. And as noted above, he is the first Irish-born actor to take home an Academy Award in the Best Actor category.

Opening nights at major festivals often lean towards the showier end of the spectrum, reaching for films with starry, red carpet-friendly casts and headline-grabbing premises to kick off proceedings in flashy style. The past two Berlinales boasted fun but forgettable openers — Rebecca Miller’s “She Came To Me” and Francois Ozon’s “Peter von Kant” — which is why it’s a pleasant surprise that this year’s Berlinale Opening Night offers something altogether subtler, a genuinely profound low-key gem which will be remembered long after the champagne and sequins have been swept away.
On the surface, “Small Things Like These,” produced by and starring the freshly Oscar-nominated Cillian Murphy (and with “Oppenheimer” co-star Matt Damon also on board as producer) fits the Opening Night brief well. In reality, however, this is a surprisingly understated film, dour and difficult to watch in places, and firmly rooted in Irish culture and history.

Exclusive: On Thursday, the Berlin Film Festival will kick off with the world premiere of Small Things Like These, starring Cillian Murphy, who also produces, and marking the first time an Irish movie opens the Berlinale. In the exclusive first-look at the 1985-set drama (check it out above), Murphy’s family man Bill Furlong comes face-to-face with Emily Watson’s formidable Sister Mary whose convent is concealing dark and disturbing secrets.
Also starring Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley and Zara Devlin, the story plays out in the weeks leading up to Christmas 1985. Bill, a devoted husband, father and coal merchant living in the traditional Irish town of New Ross in County Wexford, is facing his busiest season. During his delivery rounds, he discovers that the local convent is in fact a cruel institution that takes in so-called ‘fallen girls and women.’ His reaction to this discovery forces him to confront some hard truths about the convent,...

With their new horror thriller Guess Who, Tubi may finally have come up with a fairly original idea for one of their films. As far as I can tell, it’s the first film to use mummering as a major plot point. No, not mummies, mummering. What is mummering? Mummering is a Christmas-time house-visiting tradition practised in Newfoundland and Labrador, Ireland, and the City of Philadelphia. It adds a touch of Halloween to the season as people would dress in disguise and go door to door. If they were invited in, they’d give some kind of performance while their hosts tried to guess who they were.
Michael and Kaitlyn, his fiancée, are driving out to meet his family when they have to stop for gas.

Prime Video might be pulling back from Southeast Asian originals, but Netflix remains is doubling down on originals in the region.
The streamer has unveiled several titles from Indonesia and Thailand, and a Chinese-language slate for 2024.
One of the bigger titles on the streamer’s Indonesian slate is sci-fi series Nightmares and Daydreams, which marks Netflix’s first collaboration with Joko Anwar.
Anwar’s horror films are often well-received at the box office, with Satan’s Slaves and its sequel both in the top 10 list for highest-grossing films in the country.
Director Timo Tjahjanto will return with action film The Shadow Strays, after making comedy action flick The Big 4 in 2022, which became the second most-watched non-English film on the streamer. The Shadow Strays will star Ario Bayu, Lukman Sardi, Marissa Anita, Nirina Zubir, Sita Nursanti, Fachri Albar and Asmara Abigail.

Global streaming giant Netflix has made a significant ongoing commitment to production of original content from Southeast Asia and in the Chinese language.
For 2024, Netflix has unveiled a slate of four Chinese-language series, all hailing from Taiwan. From Thailand, it detailed seven series and one film. From Indonesia, it has committed to five films and a series co-written and directed by the consistently successful Joko Anwar, marking his first partnership with the streamer.
Additionally, Netflix has confirmed the appointment of Maya Huang as its head of Chinese-language content.
The moves stand in sharp contrast to the mid-January happenings at rival global streamer Prime Video, which is cutting staff in the region and ending its brief experiment with Southeast Asian originals.
In Indonesia, Netflix says it is broadening its storytelling with a range of genres including comedy, action, fantasy, and sci-fi thrillers.

Occupied City.At one point in Steve McQueen’s new documentary, Occupied City, the director sends his camera touring through the halls of a school in present-day Amsterdam as voice-over narration describes it having been the temporary site of an SS headquarters during the Nazi occupation. For just a moment it feels as though all of history has collapsed into itself. To see images of a building dedicated to the enrichment of children while hearing of its one-time appropriation for such monstrosity demands reckoning with the meaning even benign living spaces might hold. Occupied City is filled with such moments of dark revelation born of unthinkable contrasts: an apartment building that was home to the Dutch resistance, a grand theater used as a processing center for Jewish deportation, a now-bustling sidewalk by the river where three resistance members were publicly executed. In the long history of Amsterdam, the occupation, though seismic in impact,...

Bursting with unruly energy that practically escapes the confines of the screen, “Kneecap” is a riotous, drug-laced triumph in the name of freedom that bridges political substance and crowd-pleasing entertainment. The three members of the eponymous Irish rap group — Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin, and JJ Ó Dochartaigh — play themselves in this liberally fictionalized reimagining of their origin story set in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Cornerstone to the trio’s artistic ethos is the use of the Irish language (sometimes referred to as Irish Gaelic), to which writer-director Rich Peppiatt (a Brit) remains faithful. The island’s ancient native tongue — once banned by the British and only recognized as an official language in the U.K. in 2022 — is intrinsically tied to the identity of the colonized Irish people, often seen as an emblem of their enduring culture and defiance against British imperialism.

Last year was a huge year for Blumhouse Productions, as the video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s became the company’s highest grossing movie of all time. Released in theaters and available for streaming on Peacock on the same day, the Emma Tammi-directed horror movie made $289 million at the worldwide box office in the final months of 2023.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is of course on the way soon, and though the sequel hasn’t yet officially received a green light, it’s only a matter of time before the animatronics return to the big screen. After all, low budget horror movies don’t make $289 million and not get sequels!
Speaking with Variety this week, star Josh Hutcherson provides an update.
“I know they’re in the process right now of nailing down the story, and they want to get going as soon as possible,” Hutcherson tells the outlet.

As much grief as we give Disney Adults, one of the most shamed groups of people on the internet, we must now all come together to defeat a much greater evil: the directors creating horror films using beloved childhood Disney characters as they begin to enter public domain. Already, details — and even a trailer — have been shared about two upcoming movies starring the darling rodent in a murderous capacity.

Suzanne Collins knows how to write a dystopia. The "Hunger Games" series and its prequel "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," are among the most intense and shocking books released under the "young adult" label this side of the 21st century. They get surprisingly real about topics like Ptsd, propaganda, wealthy inequality, and the slow creep of fascism, presenting all of the above in a compelling, shiny package that's thrilling for both teens and grown-ups alike.
The movie adaptations of "The Hunger Games," for the most part, do all that too, but some entries in the property are certainly better than others. With five films to date in the franchise, each one is essential, but there are actually multiple ways in which to watch them for maximum impact. Steve McQueen’s critically acclaimed documentary Occupied City will be released in UK cinemas 9 February 2024.
Occupied City had its world premiere at Cannes Film Festival in May 2023, but UK audiences still have a while to wait until they can sit down to watch it. Modern Films are bringing the Holocaust documentary to UK cinemas 9th February 2024.
Here’s the film’s official synopsis: “The past collides with our precarious present in Steve McQueen’s bravura documentary Occupied City, informed by the book, Atlas of an Occupied City: Amsterdam 1940-1945 written by Bianca Stigter. McQueen creates two interlocking portraits: a door-to-door excavation of the Nazi occupation that still haunts his adopted city, and a vivid journey through the last years of pandemic and protest. What emerges is both devastating and life-affirming, an expansive meditation on memory, time, and where we’re headed.”

Blumhouse Productions has had no shortage of box office hits over the years, including Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Sinister, The Purge, Get Out and Halloween, but it’s this year’s video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s that is the company’s biggest movie to date.
Released in theaters on October 27, the very same day the film was also made available on Peacock at home, director Emma Tammi’s Five Nights at Freddy’s movie has now scared up an incredible $283.1 million at the worldwide box office – the film’s current domestic total is $136.2 million – which officially makes it the highest grossing movie in Blumhouse history.
The previous record holder for Blumhouse was M. Night Shyamalan’s Split, a stealth sequel to Unbreakable that ended its own worldwide box office run with $278.4 million.

Thanksgiving weekend is normally one of the top-grossing dates. This year, not so much. The debut of two $200 million productions and a second weekend of adequate performance from the “Hunger Games” prequel propelled holiday totals to mediocrity. As 2023 reaches its end stages, the absence of momentum after late-summer fireworks continues to depress results.
“Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” (Lionsgate) repeated as #1 with $28.3 million. That’s down 37 percent from its opening. The last of the original “Hunger” franchise films in 2015 dropped 49 percent, also post-Thanksgiving, but that was after a $100 million-plus debut. The prequel curently stands just under $100 million.
“Wish”Disney
Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” (Sony) surprisingly topped Disney Animation’s “Wish,” both Wednesday openers. However, each grossed around $20 million for the weekend and $32 million for five days —hardly stellar, considering the expense of each.
All told, the weekend grossed about $115 million. That represents an improvement from 2022’s $94 million,...

Against all odds, the newest installment of "The Hunger Games" franchise is just about to arrive. Though "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" releases almost exactly eight years after "Mockingjay Part 2," the prequel movie takes place roughly 60 years before Katniss Everdeen and her rebel friends brought the Capitol to its knees. Set only a decade after the Hunger Games were first mandated as a collective form of punishment for rebellion, the newest movie charts the rise of the young man who would eventually come to be known as President Coriolanus Snow, a role first portrayed by Donald Sutherland in the original series and now taken over by actor Tom Blyth. This is a very different status quo than the one fans were introduced to back in 2012, to say the least.

“Hunger Games” prequel “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” is expected to emerge victorious in this weekend’s box office battle royale.
It’s competing against two fellow newcomers, Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s threequel “Trolls Band Together” and Sony’s gory thriller “Thanksgiving,” in this crowded pre-Turkey Day corridor. Despite the stacked race, all three films could work as counter-programming against each other and carve out solid box office receipts. That may not be the case for last weekend’s champion, Disney’s $220 million budgeted superhero sequel “The Marvels.” After a disappointing $47 million debut, the comic book tentpole is bracing for a 50-55% drop, which puts ticket sales around $21 million to $23 million in its sophomore outing.
With a lackluster turnout expected for “The Marvels,” “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” will lead in North America with at least $50 million in its first weekend of release. Tracking, however, has suggested...

Netflix is giving us a sneak peek at its new sci-fi series “3 Body Problem,” from “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
In a new clip released Friday, “Game of Thrones” actor John Bradley is transported to a dystopian world after putting on a distinctly nonelectronic metallic helmet.
“There’s no screen — there’s no headphone jack, there’s not even a f–king charging port,” Bradley says in the clip. “Usually there’d be logos all over it if it was a Sony or an Oculus, or whatnot — it’s probably a beta tester.”
“No, this is not beta anything,” Jess Hong, who also stars in the series, tells Bradley’s character. “You don’t understand — this was indistinguishable from anything from reality.

Director Steve McQueen is one of the most successful black filmmakers of this generation. Although he hasn’t churned out as many feature films as other top black directors, McQueen’s films have been commercial hits. As a creative, McQueen not only directs films, but he’s also a producer, screenwriter, and video artist. McQueen began his career as a filmmaker, producing and directing short films. Till today, despite his feature film directorial reputation, McQueen still produces short films, with his recent short being the art film Grenfell (2023). These are the top 5 Steve McQueen productions in film and television. Hunger (2008)...

It’s hard to build much intrigue into whether a love-struck teen with a seemingly gentle heart and firm moral compass will betray those who trust him and cross over to the dark side when his name is Coriolanus Snow and we know from four previous films that he will grow up to be an evil overlord played with chilling authority by Donald Sutherland. Even less so once he joins the fascistic “Peacekeeper” ranks and trades his floppy blond locks for a Hitler Youth buzz cut.

French director Mehdi Fikri spent a decade working as a reporter covering social conflict and the issues of police violence and justice in France’s notoriously deprived out-of-town suburbs.
What he learned and saw during this time now feeds into his work as a filmmaker.
First feature After The Fire, which debuts in Toronto’s Discovery line-up, follows Malika, a French woman of North African descent, living in an outer suburb of the city of Strasbourg, who seeks justice after her younger brother dies in suspicious circumstances after being stopped by the police.
“I was born and grew up in Saint Denis in northern Paris, which has the reputation for being one of the most disadvantaged places in the entire Paris region,” says Fikri.

Murderers abound in the cinema of David Fincher, yet up until now they’ve tended to operate on the margins or hardly appeared at all. Fincher returns with The Killer, premiering in competition at the Venice Film Festival and a film that plays to his directorial strengths and artistry. Based on Alexis “Matz” Nolent and Luc Jacamon’s popular series of French comics from the late ’90s, The Killer is the first of Fincher’s crime stories to not only place the criminal at its center but to delight in the ruthless rationalizations of his inner mind.
It’s the latest chapter in Fincher’s long history with Netflix, and while easily suited to the streamer’s house aesthetic––episodic structure; quick, flashy titles; a color palette and tone that is never too light and never too dark––it brings together a perfect marriage of director and source material, offering...

Southeast Asia only added 7,000 net new SVOD subscriptions in the first half of 2023, a big slowdown from 7 million new subscribers in the second half of last year, according to a report from Media Partners Asia (MPA).
The flat figures are also down on the first half of 2022 when the region added 3.7 million net subscribers. Offsetting the decline from contracting platforms, Netflix, Prime Video and Viu added an aggregate 1.2 million customers during the period, accounting for 63% of new subscriptions among growing platforms.
At the same time, TikTok was “increasingly a major driver of viewership growth on mobile and web platforms, responsible for over 70% of growth in streaming minutes over the past two years”, the report stated.

Short-form video platform TikTok enjoyed a huge increase in viewership in the first six months of the year in Southeast Asia, contributing to a sudden halt to the overall growth of premium (SVOD) video, according to a new report.
Data from Ampd and analysis from consultancy firm Media Partners Asia show that TikTok is increasingly a major driver of viewership growth on mobile and web platforms in the region, responsible for over 70% of growth in streaming minutes over the past two years.
In the January-June period, TikTok captured 42% of video streaming minutes, a massive 20-percentage point increase over the first half of 2021 and a seven percentage point increase from the first half of last year. While overall engagement is growing, TikTok’s rise has cut into the dominance of YouTube (-4%) and time spent watching premium VOD (-2%) year-on-year, according to the firms’ Southeast Asia Online Video Consumer Insights & Analytics report.

Anohni’s voice sounds delicate, angry, and exhausted, as she grieves track by track — for the unfulfilled promises of civil rights, for friends lost to drugs and depression, for the immolation of a world succumbing to ecocide. On one song, “Why Am I Alive Now?” her voice quivers and keens as she regards the discord closing in on her (leaves fall off trees, smoke chokes the air,...

From blockbuster Shutter director Parkpoom Wongpoom (Oh) comes a new Thai drama on Netflix titled Delete. The show follows a young man and woman, Aim and Lilly, who are having an affair. Both of their partners will know the truth soon enough. But when Aim and Lilly get their hands on a camera device that removes a person from existence with just one click, they decide to use it to lead a happy life together. A seemingly simple idea creates a dramatic series of events that change Aim and Lilly’s lives for good. I think Delete had the potential to be fantastic, but there are a few things that drag it down. For an 8-part series, mostly everything gets left unanswered by the end of the season, and even if a new chapter is opening up for a potential second season, I think some closure was required to wrap...

“3 Body Problem,” a new Netflix sci-fi series from “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, finally has a first teaser as Netflix announced on Saturday that the show will premiere in January 2024.
“As children, we fear the dark. Anything might be out there. The unknown troubles us,” an unseen man says in a voiceover. “There are those who say we should not inquire too closely, and, to who else might be living in that darkness, better not to know. But we continue to search. Life looks for life.”
As he speaks, the teaser flashes between scenes of people rioting, flashlights taking in a mysterious code that appears to be written in blood, a gnarled hand moving in water and a woman walking over lava. The clip then ends with dozens of what appear to be Roman soldiers being sucked into the sky.

Ja Morant, the Memphis Grizzlies’ guard who is among the NBA’s most dynamic players, has been suspended without pay by the league for 25 games after repeatedly brandishing a gun on social media. Pro rated, the suspension could cost Morant $10-plus million, based on his $33.5 million annual salary this past year. It will also cost the Grizzlies, who came in second in the Western Conference last year, their best player for a good chunk of the 82-game season.
Morant was suspended by the Grizzlies after the latest mid-May incident, but NBA commissioner Adam Silver decided the league would wait to impose its own punishment until after the Finals so as not to distract from that event. Now that the Denver Nuggets have been crowned NBA champs, Silver was free to make the announcement.
Morant was shown in the Mid-may video holding a gun, the second such incident this year for him.

Acclaimed Thai auteur Pen-ek Ratanaruang is reteaming with veteran, Asia-based cinematographer Christopher Doyle for a subversive psychological thriller set in the colorful world of Thai cuisine.
Bangkok-set film Morte Cucina follows a talented young female chef named Sao who has a chance encounter with a man who sexually abused her when she was a teen. “Using her talents in the kitchen, Sao sets her plan of revenge in motion — achieving a rather unexpected result,” the film’s logline reads.
Morte Cucina is co-written by Pen-ek and Kongdej Jaturanrasamee (Hunger, Faces of Anne). It will be Pen-ek’s first feature since his noir crime thriller Samui Song, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2017. The project reunites the Thai auteur and Doyle for the first time since their 2003 project together, Last Life in the Universe, which was Thailand’s official submission to the Oscars that year, and also won its Japanese star,...
