Joseph Millson is teaming up with Grammy and Oscar-winning composer Anne Dudley for Signs Of Life. More on that project below.
Joseph Millson, an actor known for his roles in Angel Has Fallen, Casino Royale and I Give It A Year, is set to make his directorial debut with Signs Of Life, a third part in a trilogy of films.
The two previous films, The Magician and Care and both were produced by Millson and his wife Sarah-Jane Potts under their production company MillPotts Productions. Talk about relationship goals!
Unlike The Magician and Care, which were both shorts, Signs Of Life will be a feature film.
“The lead characters from Care and The Magician were the inspiration for the protagonists in Signs Of Life,” Millson said in a press release. “I felt there was still a lot to be said about the current epidemic of heartache and depression, the sheer...

It’s an interesting month ahead on Hulu, as the streamer rolls out some of the series it’s been keeping in its back pocket for the holiday season.
On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

The romantic comedy is back, or at least in the very early throes of coming back, thanks to films like “Book Club,” the upcoming Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder reunion “Destination Wedding,” and a slew of Netflix originals churning out at a rapid pace. In fact, it may be that Netflix is the one saving the genre, or at least reminding viewers just how much fun it can be to watch two nice people fall in love against a backdrop of misadventures and high jinks. This week sees the release of the streamer’s latest original, “Set It Up,” which joins a healthy selection of rom-coms currently available for instant streaming.
From classics like “The African Queen” to festival breakouts like “The Incredible Jessica James” and unexpected gems like “I Give It a Year,” Netflix is filled with prime examples of all the loving, funny offerings the genre still has to offer.

2017 has seen one more film added to the list of perplexing creations. Based on the cultural phenomenon formed by a humble social app, The Emoji Movie had great potential, if handled with original vision and wit. The plot is set in the city of Textopolis, where Gene, a multi-expressional emoji, heads out to become as normal as other emojis and their single expressions. Unfortunately, the enthusiasm that went into its development, such as casting award-winners James Corden (Into the Woods, 2014) and Ilana Glazer (Broad City, 2014-2018), as well as T.J. Miller (Silicon Valley, 2014-2017) and Anna Faris (I Give It a Year, 2013), was not enough to impress its more demanding audiences. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes pointed out, among other things, a weakness in taste, plot and purpose, apart from it being little more than a promotional tool. Even though the $179,535,817 global box office likely soothed Sony Pictures Animation’s wounded pride,...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Hangover lite, with even more tepid notions of what constitutes debauchery, plus a true dedication to strained contrivance. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of grossout comedies
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
You know those really dumb comedies where the only actually funny bits are the outtakes that run over the end credits, where everyone is finally on their game and the humor comes loose and fast and unconstructed, and you think, “Gee, why isn’t the whole movie like that?”? This is not the case with Office Christmas Party. Ocp — not to be confused with the evil robotics corporation in Robocop, which is more fun on a Friday after-work drinks thing than this movie — is, if I recall correctly, the first instance of end-credits clips that are as precisely forced and flat as...

Last night we found out that British stage and screen legend Richard E. Grant had joined the cast of James Mangold’s follow up to The Wolverine as a “villainous mad scientist type.” Now, Deadline is reporting that none other than Stephen Merchant will be joining him – though this time we know even less about his character.
In fact, we know literally nothing. The trade doesn’t even mention if it’ll be a main or supporting role, but there’s already some speculation that he might be mutant shape-shifter, Morph. Yeah, we know….that’s not very likely.
Merchant is best known for his sitcom work with writing partner Ricky Gervais, but he has also had quite a few acting gigs, including roles in the likes of Hall Pass, Hot Fuzz and I Give It A year.

They seem to be lining up a bunch of lanky Brits for Logan to hack through in The Wolverine 3. Last night we found out that Richard E. Grant would play a "villainous mad scientist type" in James Mangold's movie, and now Deadline reports that Stephen Merchant (Hall Pass, Hot Fuzz, I Give It A year) will join him - though we know even less about the character he'll be playing. And by less, we mean fuck all. There are no details provided whatsoever, and because we can't nail down any specific comic arcs they're drawing from, speculating about who it could be is difficult, too. Also starring are Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook and, of course, Hugh Jackman. The Wolverine 3 is to hit theaters on May 3, 2017.

Rose Byrne would rather play the guy characters in the majority of scripts she reads.
The Australian funnywoman, 36, started her career as a serious actress, but when Hollywood started placing her in films like Bridesmaids and I Give It a Year, Rose carved a name for herself in comedy.
She’ll soon be back as Kelly Radner in Bad Neighbours 2, reuniting with Seth Rogen, Zac Efron and director Nicholas Stoller.
“Seth and Nick are really championing getting rid of those stereotypes,” Rose told New York Magazine of the roles on offer for women. “Most things I read, I still would much rather play the guy. There have been some changes, but I wish there was more.”
In 2014’s Bad Neighbours Rose made sure she didn’t play the nagging wife life first indented, and Seth even offered to trade his lines with her when she was unhappy. But together...

Dirty Grandpa, starring Robert De Niro & Zac Efron, started life as a Black List script. Er, it's not ended its life as a Black List script
Wow, who knew that the much maligned trailer for Dirty Grandpa might just turn out to be the very best of the year? Trailers can hide what a film really is, or mislead you about what to expect, but functionally, they're meant to briefly encapsulate the movie they're advertising, and rarely has a film's corpulence been so perfectly distilled, with such repellent efficiency, as this.
In case you missed the trailer and might otherwise wander into a cinema with any other expectations, the title character is Dick Kelly (Robert De Niro), a septugenarian whose wife has recently passed after a long battle with cancer. He's not on good terms with his son (Dermot Mulroney), but his buttoned-down grandson Jason (Zac Efron...

2016 looks to be a particularly strong year for UK crime drama, with Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire, Adam Smith’s Trespass Against Us and Michael Apted’s Unlocked on their way. Military thrillers are also well represented this year, with Gavin Hood’s Eye In The Sky, Fernando Coimbra’s Sand Castle, and Simon West’s Stratton incoming. There’s also comedy, fantasy, drama, horror and even a musical waiting for you below.

Despite the similar titles, Dirty Grandpa is not a sequel to the recent hit Johnny Knoxville comedy Bad Grandpa, but the two movies do have one thing in common: They hope you like old people doing things that old people typically shouldn't be doing. In the case of Dirty Grandpa, that old person is Roberto De Niro. Coming from I Give It a Year director Dan Mazer, Dirty Grandpa stars De Niro as an amorous old guy who tricks his grandson, played by Zac Efron, into taking him on a spring break road trip. Grandpa's wife recently passed away and so now he plans on really living it up with what time he has left, but the trouble is his grandson is a bit uptight about it all. This first trailer is safe for work, but the same won't be said of the final movie...

Johnny Knoxville already brought us the wild antics of Bad Grandpa with his trusty Jackass crew, preying on the clueless public with hidden cameras and prosthetic genitals. Now Robert De Niro is trying to get in the geriatric tomfoolery game with Dirty Grandpa. The new raunchy comedy from director Dan Mazer (I Give It a Year) sees […]

Following up on yesterday’s teaser image of Zac Efron and Robert De Niro kicking back in a flashy pink Mini Cooper, Lionsgate has debuted the maiden trailer for its new coming-out-of-age comedy Dirty Grandpa.
Using the interplay between the two leads to anchor the on-screen pizazz, Dan Mazer’s (I Give it a Year) feature follows Efron’s uptight, soon-to-be-married man who begrudgingly agrees to drive his newly-widowed grandfather (De Niro) up to Spring Break. Dusting off the cobwebs, Dirty Grandpa plays it straight and narrow by having the actor engage in the kind of party stunts and unprotected sex one would expect from a stereotypical teenage boy, not an actor whose career continues to baffle rather than amaze.
Indeed, playing a grouchy old man is hardly anything new for De Niro, and it’s unlikely that Dirty Grandpa will help Efron bounce back from the box office flop...

Can grown-up Zac Efron lead a movie on his own? The jury is still out. He scored a big hit last year with "Neighbors" alongside Seth Rogen, but nobody cared about his aspiring DJ drama "We Are Your Friends," which dropped the needle in August. So the actor is back in raunchy comedy mode, and is bringing along Robert De Niro who once again shows there's no bar too low for his legacy to limbo under. Read More: Review: 'We Are Your Friends' Starring Zac Efron Directed by Dan Mazer ("I Give It A Year"), this a road trip movie about an uptight young man who is about to get married, who has drive his freewheeling Grandpa to Spring Break. And thus, the comedy is anchored on De Niro being the unlikely party animal, and Efron furrowing his brow and looking on with consternation. We'll see what...

Get someone kinda famous off the telly and a Hollywood A-lister, mix them together and hope for the best, but now it’s with added grit
This week’s home-video release of British romcom Man Up begins with two trailers: one for last year’s widely derided Nick Frost salsa showcase Cuban Fury and another for 2013’s similarly panned I Give It A Year. Like Man Up, both films see plucky British everymen romancing Hollywood A-listers in the service of a new kind of homegrown romantic comedy – one that rejects the foppish fantasy of yesteryear Richard Curtis offerings in favour of a coarser brand of Britishness, brimming with observational comedy and semi-famous telly actors.
This shift makes a certain amount of sense (lord knows there’s no place in 2015 for a leading man whose main source of strife is the lack of storage space in his open-plan Chelsea loft), but...

It is a sign of how broken Hollywood is that the smart, stylish and passionate Beyond the Lights didn’t get the studio support it needed to make the kind of splash it deserved at the U.S. box office last fall. It didn’t open very wide, and it disappeared from screens almost instantly afterward. There is no excuse for this.

UK cinema in 2015 has plenty to recommend it. Here are 36 UK films of all genres to look forward to this year…
Dig past the litterfall of Kray Brothers biopics and tales of nubile teens on camping trips gone wrong, and you’ll unearth plenty for the UK film industry to boast about in 2015. From sci-fi romps and thrillers like Robot Overlords and Ex Machina to dramas like High-Rise, comedies like War On Everyone, spy flicks like Spectre and kids’ films like Bill, there’s no shortage of inventive, highly promising cinema coming from these isles.
We’ve included a few choice co-productions in 2015’s pick of the year’s most interesting-looking pictures, which bolsters our list in both size and breadth (and mostly means we Brits can claim partial credit for ace-sounding dystopian flick The Lobster).
In alphabetical order then, here are the 36 UK (or UK-ish) movies we’re excited about seeing this year…...

Versatility and adaptability are key qualities if want to keep working in the ever-changing film industry, and composer Ilan Eshkeri has shown those skills across a variety of movies. From period drama "The Young Victoria," to comic book mayhem in "Kick-Ass," rom-coms like "I Give It A Year" and "Austenland," and fantasies such as "Stardust," Eshkeri has shown a remarkable ability to roll with the demands of different films and deliver at a high level. That's the case for "Still Alice," and today we have an exclusive look behind-the-scenes at his work on the film. Led by Julianne Moore, the film tells the story of a university professor who slowly succumbs to early onset Alzheimer's disease, as she deals everything she's accomplished in her life and career vanishing from her memory. It's tough material that requires an nuanced hand, and as Esherki sees it, his job is to find the "emotional soul" of the film.

Lionsgate just added two high-profile projects to its upcoming schedule – magician caper sequel Now You See Me 2 and raunchy roadtrip comedy Dirty Grandpa.
The former has been set for June 10th, 2016. It’s a follow-up to last year’s surprise smash hit Now You See Me, which opened to an unexpectedly mighty $29.4 million domestic debut and went on to gross a stellar $351.7 million worldwide.
The sequel is expected to continue the story of The Four Horsemen (Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco), skilled magicians who perform heists, now that the enigmatic Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) has inducted them into a secret society of magicians known as the Eye. Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) is sitting in the director’s chair, taking over from Louis Leterrier.
Now You See Me 2, as it’s currently known, is only currently facing down video game adaptation Uncharted on that date.

Following news that Robert De Niro and Zac Efron would team on the comedy Dirty Grandpa, Lionsgate has just revealed that they'll release the comedy (which may end up being called Driving Dick Kelly) on December 25th, 2015 for some counter-programming alongside Mission: Impossible 5. In news that must surprise fans of either actor, two-time Academy Award winner Robert De Niro is hitting the road with “High School Musical” heartthrob Zac Efron in “Driving Dick Kelly.” Formerly “Dirty Grandpa,” “Driving Dick Kelly” is a buddy movie depicting a prurient senior citizen and his grandson, who he dupes into taking him to Florida for Spring Break. Jeff Bridges and Michael Douglas had both earlier been rumored to be circling the lusty grandfather role. De Niro, whose “Last Vegas” opened last year, also flexed his comedy muscles in the “Fockers” series, among others, while Efron just successfully reinvented himself in the comedy world with "Neighbors." Dan Mazer ("I Give It A Year") is slated to direct; John Phillips wrote the screenplay. [The Wrap] Guy Pearce has been incredibly busy of late, and he’s not showing any signs of slowing down. Johnny Knoxville already became a Bad Grandpa in the Jackass spin-off film from last year, but now Robert De Niro may become a Dirty Grandpa. THR has word that the legendary actor is in early talks to play a perverted former Army general who thinks his grandson is about to marry the wrong woman, and so he tricks him into driving down to Florida for spring break where, as we all know, there's plenty of sexy action. Zac Efron is also in early talks to take the role of the grandson with I Give It a Year director Dan Mazer getting behind the camera. The project was at Universal, but is now being shopped at Tiff by Qed. A couple of years ago, Michael Douglas and Jeff Bridges were said to be circling the project written by Bad Santa writer John Phillips, but that was when the project had a studio home.

Charlie St. Cloud star Zac Efron already proved he could do a mean Robert De Niro impression in this summer’s comedy smash hit Neighbors, and now we’ve learned that the actor will be joining forces with the acting legend himself for an upcoming comedy titled Dirty Grandpa.
Described as a road trip comedy, Dirty Grandpa will find Efron playing a young man tricked into driving his dirty-minded grandfather (De Niro), a former Army general, to Florida for spring break. Their trip is complicated by the grandfather’s belief that his grandson is on the cusp of marrying the wrong woman.
Dan Mazer, known for collaborating with Sacha Baron Cohen and helming the Britcom I Give It A Year, is set to direct the comedy, which was once housed at Universal but is now being packaged by Qed.

Johnny Knoxville was a Bad Grandpa for Jackass last year, but Robert De Niro is about to go one worse. He's signed on to be the Dirty Grandpa in a "raunchy" new Universal comedy. Zac Efron will be his straight man.The story finds Efron as a straight-laced guy about to get married, but strong-armed, just before his wedding, into driving his foul-mouthed ex-army grandpa to Florida for spring break. On the night of June 9th 2007, a new television reality show called ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ went on air in the UK. On its first ever broadcast, a shy, unassuming man opened his mouth to sing the famous operatic aria ‘Nessun Dorma’, delivering a beautiful, stirring rendition that would change his life from that moment forward.
Swept up in the contagious emotion of Giacomo Puccini’s stunning aria, and the unlikely figure with crooked teeth and diluted confidence who had crooned it for them, the show’s three judges – Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan – stared in awe at what they had just witnessed, while the audience of 2,000 at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff erupted in a standing ovation.
Britain was instantly won over by Paul Potts, who was then working as a manager at the Port Talbot branch of The Carphone Warehouse, and followed him on his...

VFX house behind Kick-Ass 2 working on upcoming sci fi project Robot Overlords.
London visual effects firm Nvizible is to expand with the launch of Nvizible Belfast. As part of this expansion, former head of production Kris Wright has been promoted to managing director with Nic Hatch taking on the role of chairman.
Hatch has been credited as the driving force behind the Belfast move and “recognised it as an area of growth in the film industry with a shortage of VFX”.
Wright said: “In tandem with this growth of VFX in Belfast we are going to nurture a talent pool of local artists to work on these shows. This is something young, aspiring VFX artists in Northern Ireland have never had the chance to do before.”
Victoria Farley will head up the studio in Belfast, which is already working on Robot Overlords, an Embankment Films production that is also being handled by the London office. The facilities...

Jude Law is one of those rare actors with both incredible dramatic depth and a brilliant knack for comedy. Over the years, he’s delivered powerhouse performances in dark fare like Cold Mountain and Contagion but also shown off his funny bone in films like Sherlock Holmes and, more recently, Dom Hemingway. Law’s ability to balance both acts makes him a huge asset to every project he signs on for, which is why he’s one of Hollywood’s most consistently acclaimed stars. Now, we’re hearing that Fox has snagged him for a supporting role in their upcoming spy comedy Susan Cooper.
Law will join Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne and Jason Statham in the film, which is set to hit theaters next summer. Paul Feig, who previously worked with McCarthy and Byrne on their breakout comedy Bridesmaids, is set to both write and direct Susan Cooper. For now,...

The cast is game, and hit the right notes balancing cartoonishness and charm. As sitcom rom-coms go, it’s far from the worst one ever offered to us. I’m “biast” (pro): I am amused by Nick Frost
I’m “biast” (con): the premise didn’t thrill me
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
The best thing about the halfhearted, old-hat Cuban Fury is its tagline: “Real men dance.” Of course they do, and I like the implication that we’re going to see some tired stereotypes get smacked. And we get a bit of that, for the second best thing in Cuban Fury is the dance fight between Nick Frost’s schlubby engineer and his appalling jerk of a coworker, played by Chris O’Dowd — it’s funny not for any suggestion that they, as men, shouldn’t be dancing, but because each character...

Martin Scorsese's tale of financial excess holds firm at the box office, pulling ahead of American Hustle and 12 Years a Slave
Wolf pulls ahead
A week ago, contenders for the best picture Oscar American Hustle, 12 Years a Slave and The Wolf of Wall Streetstood more or less neck and neck with around £11m apiece. Now the Scorsese comedy has pulled ahead with just shy of £15m, compared with £13.69m for Slave and £12.2m for Hustle. The Wolf of Wall Street is already the ninth-biggest 18-certificate movie at the UK box-office, behind Hannibal (£21.6m), American Beauty (£21.3m), Seven (£19.5m), Silence of the Lambs (£17.1m), Bruno (£15.8m), Django Unchained (£15.7m), Basic Instinct (£15.5m) and Fatal Attraction (£15.4m). Wolf will very soon overtake the last four films on that list, and has a good shot at £20m lifetime. The Bruno figure includes some box-office for the 15-certificate version. Including Monday takings, Wolf is now at £15.17m.
