I haven't watched Murdoch Mysteries for some years, but checked this one out when I heard it involved a Mennonite theme.
The CBC did its usual poor job of representing Mennonites, apparently doing minimal research. They got the name Berlin (now Kitchener) right, and noted two types of Mennonites--Old Order and a group somewhat more progressive.
However the characterization of their culture was pitiful. Mennonites do not use matchmakers, they do not isolate from their neighbors. They do not live in "colonies." Men do not avoid talking to another man's wife. Their meetinghouses do not include musical instruments. They do not shun each other if there is disagreement, though there can be divisions. They did not deal with unwanted pregnancies by locking daughters in the attic; they would have sent the daughter to a relative in another community.
I note another reviewer commending the introduction to an unknown lifestyle. Unfortunately, this was not it.
I wish the CBC would take minority cultures more seriously in their dramas.
