A quite surprising performance by Susana Werner

"Opressão" covers basic areas of doomed relationships where both parts from a very same couple go different directions and things turn into dramatic and tense situations, so there isn't much of a great appeal to it. Yet it got me interested for quite some time, specially the plot twist that got me jaw dropped (honestly, I could not see that coming but I guess some viewers will find it predictable). I don't know, but I was hooked by the story and by the acting of Susana Werner who plays the poor beautiful woman whose care for her husband goes to waste and she can't get any satisfaction from such relationship.

Werner was a familiar name for most people in the late 1990's due to her relationship with soccer player Ronaldinho (O Fenômeno), it was a talk all over the town and the news, but she had an acting career (quite brief) before and after their relationship, which includes one small and uncredited role in the soap opera "A Próxima Vítima" (I watched the whole a couple of years ago and could not find her at all, but IMDb has her listed and this was before dating Ronaldinho), and a couple after of other roles in other productions here and there. Seeing her act for the first time I find it a very natural talent, convincing and could have been bigger if given the right parts elsewhere. She was the best thing in this short and it left me quite surprised despite being a very limited project with an average script. But she carries the movie and delivers something worth seeing while playing this tragic character who suffers on the hand of her partner and quietly dreams about her caring neighbor.

If it is our purpose to find a meaning to this, then the movie is a warning sign for women out there to notice the signs when the relationship isn't going all too well, and if possible move away, end it all. To keep the flame of love burning and strong both sides must allign themselves into a unique project, a common goal, and although the timing may be wrong for one or another, those matters must be politely discussed, thought through and see a common ground both can reach. The minute the man recurred to ignoring her and then spoke a little louder was enough to raise red flags and end the whole relation. And to think people forgive things like that and the worst happens. So, if you're not learning on the news with similar events, then the movies should a point of reference. Sure, there's better movies out there on the topics brought on here but this one is simple and safe and it won't take much of your time. 6/10.
