Exclusive: Us and India-based service will allow users to receive their money back if they don’t like the first ten minutes of a film.
Us and India-based online platform MovieSaints has developed a novel concept for drawing users to the TVoD (transactional VoD) model.
The site, which charges around $4.99 per movie, enables viewers to claim a full refund if they don’t like the film they’re watching in the first ten minutes.
If they watch beyond ten minutes, they pay a non-refundable platform fee of $1.99, but can decide over the next 24 hours if they want a partial refund, pay full price or pay above the requested fee. Whatever viewers pay above the platform fee goes back to the filmmakers or distributors and sales agents.
“We understand that buying an independent film online is a risk in terms of both time and money for the viewer,” said MovieSaints CEO Priyadarshi Rishiraj. “So we wanted...

Expanding on his producing role on 2012’s Nairobi Half Life, director Tom Tykwer assists Kenyan filmmaker Mbithi Masya on his debut feature, an offbeat drama set somewhere in the afterlife. Winner of the Fipresci international film critics’ award this year at the Toronto International Film Festival, Kati Kati is well-suited to festival play and could eventually garner further attention on VOD.
The film begins literally in the middle of nowhere, as Kaleche (Nyokabi Gethaiga) wanders lost and disoriented through the Kenyan grasslands, trying to remember how she got there, but her mind is a blank. Dressed only in a hospital...

I'm a sucker for solid political thrillers, and this one definitely has my attention, if only because it's set in an African country (Kenya), with a black African cast and crew, and is a 4th collaboration between German filmmaker Tom Tykwer's One Fine Day Films, and Nairobi (Kenya)-based Ginger Ink - a project we first alerted you to a year ago, when it was beginning principal photography. S&A has covered every film that's been developed under the One Fine Day Films/Ginger Ink collab: "Soul Boy," from director Hawa Essuman, "Nairobi Half Life," from director David Tosh Gitonga, and most recently, "Something Necessary,"...

Bristol’s Watershed is teaming up with Afrika Eye to present two new Kenyan films in UK cinemas through March 2014.
Watershed hosted the popular Afrika Eye Festival last weekend. Two of those titles, Tosh Gitonga’s Nairobi Half Life and Judy Kibinge’s Something Necessary, will now travel to other UK cinemas including the Showroom in Sheffield and Cornerhouse in Manchester, and festivals including Africa In Motion, the Cambridge African Film Festival and Film Africa.
Both projects came out of workshops run by Marie Steinmann & Tom Tykwer’s One Fine Day Films, in partnership with Nairobi based Ginger Ink.
“Currently only 0.01% of films shown in cinemas in the UK are from Africa. This touring initiative is about developing the availability and range of African films for increasingly diverse UK audiences. It builds on the excellent collaborative work of the UK African film festivals and the partnership with The Africa Channel,” said Mark Cosgrove...

Editor's Note: David "Tosh" Gitonga's Nairobi Half Life is screening as part of the Africa in Motion Film Festival (AiM), which kicked off last week. I didn't really know what to expect when I sat down in the theater to watch Nairobi Half Life at this year's Pan African Film Festival. I heard about the film in passing, but not much beyond that. The storyline is familiar, a young man from a small town ventures to the big city in hopes of pursuing his dreams. Only in this film, the young man is Kenyan, comes from a small village, and ventures to Nairobi in hopes of becoming an actor. As soon as he arrives, he is blitzed by the commotion and danger of urban life. But...

Carpe Dealer: Gitonga’s Debut Lands Distinction of Kenya’s First Oscar Submission
Director David ‘Tosh’ Gitonga, mentee of Tom Tykwer, (whose One Fine Day Film workshop financed this project), will forever have the distinction of directing Kenya’s first official submission to the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language film with his debut, Nairobi Half Life. While the film is far from perfect, despite the lofty honor already bestowed upon its reputation, the production value of the film is definitely superb and Gitonga lucked out with his casting of largely unprofessional actors, gleaning some notable performances from his crew. While the film doesn’t manage to stray very far from predictability, Gitonga still manages to build a compelling empathy for his protagonist, a young man doing his best to live his dreams in a city that seems designed only to kill them.

I'm late on posting this press release, which has several titles we've covered, making their USA debuts, which is key, like David Tosh Gitonga's Nairobi Half Life (Kenya's submission for this year's Best Foreign Language Film Oscar; others of note (although not necessarily making their USA debuts) include Ulrich Seidl's Paradise: Love and Paradise: Faith, Alain Gomis' Tey, and Student Academy Award winner Narcocorrido which stars Nicki Michaeux, among others. Nijla will be covering the festival in La for S&A, so we should get reviews of some of these films, as well as interviews with talent. Here's everything and the...

Today, AFI 2012 announced its complete lineup, after previously debuting its New Auteurs, Young Americans, Galas and Special Screenings we finally get a look at the Midnight, Breakthrough, Shorts, and deliriously good World Cinema Selections.
The Shorts section, with almost too many to count, features new work from Nacho Vigalando, Nicolas Provost, and even Shia Labeouf (Cannes selected), among many others. The four Midnight titles all played in Tiff 2012’s Midnight Madness selection, and here we see John Dies at the End making a stop here after originally premiering at Sundance. They’ve nabbed three North American premieres in their Breakthrough section, including Kid from Fien Troch, Nairobi Half Life from David Tosh Gitonga, and Oh Boy from Jan Ole Gerster. But AFI has managed to really impress with it’s World Cinema selections. Just as they nabbed Cannes premiere Holy Motors for their Special Screenings, they’ve nabbed several high...

Kenyan crime drama titled Nairobi Half Life, from director David Tosh Gitonga, is Kenya's selection for the Best Foreign Language Oscar category, making it just the second film from Kenya to be entered into the race (the first was 2008's Heart of Fire, a Kenyan/German co-production about civil war in Eritrea. However, despite the entry, the film didn't make the short list of final nominations by the Academy for the 2009 Awards. Gitonga's Nairobi Half Life centers on an aspiring actor from upcountry Kenya, who dreams of becoming a success. In pursuit of this, he makes his way to Nairobi, supposedly the city of opportunity, and faces a different...
